Pats: Jim McNally called himself “Deflator” because he’s fat

Getty Images

Oh, here we go, this makes perfect sense.

Jim McNally didn’t call himself The Deflator because he took air out of footballs, more probably than not at the behest of Tom Brady.

He called himself that because he’s fat.

That’s another of the arguments forwarded by the Patriots in their really long (nearly 20,000 words) refutation of the Ted Wells Report.

The Patriots explain that John Jastremski is a “slender guy,” and usually tried to work out and bulk up. McNally is described as “a big fellow,” and was trying to lose weight.

The Patriots contend investigators had possession of the “espn/deflator” text initially, but didn’t ask McNally about it in their first interview.

“Had they done so, they would have learned from either gentleman one of the ways they used the deflation/deflator term,” they wrote. “‘Deflate’ was a term they used to refer to losing weight.”

They cite specific texts including one which read “deflate and give somebody that jacket.”

“There was nothing complicated or sinister about it,” they wrote, before going through a blow-by-blow of previous texts between McNally and Jastremski which references beer pong and women whose names were “omitted out of respect to Mrs. Jastremski.”

The Patriots suggest that the “jocular texts” undermine Wells’ suggestion that deflator was a reference to anything wrong.

And frankly, that’s as thin as Jastremski apparently is.

  1. It feels like when you catch a buddy in a lie, everyone knows it’s a lie, but they keep coming up with more and more elaborate excuses and lies. They’re reeeeeeeeeeeeeeaching now.

  2. So only took Jim McNally and the Pats five days to come up with that excuse? If he was being called the deflator for that reason why he didn’t strike back immediatly?

  3. Oh my God! This is getting embarrassing.

Sad thing is, the brainless Patriot fans will actually believe this.

WAKE UP! Your team is insulting your intelligence BIG time!

  4. It’s a whole lot of brown stuff flying around out of Foxborough, lol. Fat guy calling himself deflator. Makes perfect sense. Thanks for helping us understand correctly , Patriots.

  5. Where are they coming up with this stuff?

    This is hilarious.

The first rule when you find yourself in a hole is not to dig deeper.

  6. If he was truly the deflator, why don’t others use that name.

People are given nicknames. They don’t create them for themselves. Did wells go to high school or college or is he such a genius that he went straight into law from preschool?

  7. If this is the best excuse that they could come up with then the Pats should have just continued to avoid the topic. This makes them look even more guilty.

  8. This is just getting ridiculous. Do the Patriots NOT have a PR Director to save themselves from digging the hole even bigger?

What an embarrassment for a team that has won some championships but has been busted for cheating half that many times. I thought Kraft was smarter than this.

  9. They have now sunk to the comedically pathetic level. Let’s hope they plateau here for a while so we can all get a few more laughs.

  10. Its an odd argument for thenPats to make in that it makes me think, “they might have asked him during the second interview…”

  11. This is what I wanted. I want them to deny, deflect, cry and whine for the rest of the summer.

Exposing the shadiness is the goal my friends.

  12. So what’s the excuse for saying they will give “Tom” a ball that is like a watermelon, and why are they saying ‘Brady was complaining that the balls in the Jets game were too hard’.

The New England Patriots are an absolute joke of a franchise if they think the majority of the public is going to buy these lies. I guess they’ll say that ‘watermelon’ simply meant that Brady wanted a snack on the sidelines. What’s next in their string of excuses/lies?

  13. The delusion from the front office down to the fans of this organization is incredible. You got caught, own up to it and move on.

  14. The funny part is that the Pats could have just debunked the Wells report with scientific evidence, but now they are coming with all these new and dumb excuses that is making them look like big liars.

  15. I would have found it more believable if they said it was in reference to his penile pump

  16. Did the Patriots just bring back Johnny Cochran and the OJ defense team?
I’m 195lbs and want to deflate to about 175lbs myself. Cardio day!

  17. Very Clinton-esque….”it depends on what your definition of the work ‘deflate’ is…”

  18. I’m not a pats fan. But I do call guys fat at work by using work related puns. It actually does happen in real life. If you already have a closed mind then you will only see what you want to see.

  19. This is awesome…now the patriots are comedic cheaters…I don’t assume you guys are making this stuff up. My jaw just dropped when I read the headline and then began to laugh uncontrollably after reading the article. Please don’t stop…keep em coming!

  20. I am trying to eat better and deflate. If anybody needs a good diet plan to deflate, let me know and I will give it to you. I will have you deflating in no time.

  21. Ehh hehehehe…

If you wrote a script and tried to sell this as a sitcom nobody would buy it because who would believe it

  22. When we made up such a story, the teachers in our school would triple our detention.

  23. With that explanation the Patriots should lose another first round draft choice in 2017 for insulting our intelligence. Rather than supporting their innocence such a ridiculous, lame explanation actually supports their guilt.

  24. They should fine the Pats another million bucks just for this stupid explanation.

  25. Makes no sense whatsoever…Deflat-or still means you are deflating something else. Deflat-ing could be weight loss, if you’re a balloon.

  26. Lol lolol😂😂😂😂😂damn these guys really want to save their careers , can’t blame them . They won’t be able to get another job in the NFL or NCAA or maybe even pop warner after this

  27. LOL the Patriots have the worst legal and PR staffs that money can buy. Blaming it on autocorrect would be more believable.

  28. Wow, does this “explanation” ever make the Pats look even lamer and more guilty than they did before! Somebody in the front office really didn’t think this through. You’re digging that hole even deeper, Pats. Keep regurgitating this kind of idiocy and maybe the NFL will double your fine.

  29. That 20,000 word CY paper will keep the pats fan busy for awhile.
    This response is really embarrassing.

  30. It’s not a question of guilt or innocence, at this point. The intelligent (non-Sox Nation) person accepts that Brady had a part in doctoring the balls (short of a global conspiracy). The question, now, is will the suspension stand. Brady has lawyer’d up, as most guilty people with money will do. Unlike someone facing jail time, the worst he can get is 4 weeks. So, it makes perfect sense for him to throw millions and the kitchen sink at this thing. It’s just a question of the NFL flinching with an all out legal and media assault that is being waged by the Patriots. People rolled their eyes at ‘if the glove doesn’t fit’ argument…but it worked in the end for OJ.

  31. I wish the league could increase the suspension/fine/loss of picks for the Patriots’ continued blatant lying during the appeal process.

This explanation is insulting to anyone with half a brain.

  32. If he’s fat shouldn’t he be called the inflator? I think I can get a nobel-prize winning scientist to back be up on that

  33. If they use Deflate for losing weight, it’s more probable than not that they started the term because they had been deflating footballs for a long time. They picked up the slang from that..

  34. The Pats just won the Internet today for quite possibly the DUMBEST and, at the same time, FUNNIEST excuse I have ever heard!!!!

    Congrats Pats!

  35. You have got to be kidding me. Screw the Pats man. I have ZERO respect for anyone associated with these compulsive liars.

  36. Has anyone, in the history of exercise, referred to losing weight as deflating? I doubt it.

I want to see Mr. Brady’s text even with names were “omitted out of respect to Mrs. Brady.”

  37. McNally: They call me that because of my favorite opera – Deflator Mouse…yeah…that’s the ticket…

  38. The Patriots are obviously spinning this around but its making it look worse for them. Shut up, take your punishment, and move on.

  39. Any Pats fans still want to defend them and claim their innocence after this hail Mary desperation? What a joke. After reading that, Goodell should add more to the punishment and force Kraft to sell the team.

  40. Makes complete sense to me. I’ve seen nothing but excellent counters from the Pats and silences from all else. Face facts: we’re just better than you and always will be.

  41. Pat’s keep looking worse and worse in this whole mess…sometimes the best rebuttal is silence. Have your day in court Pat’s and stop this buffoonery, the more you try to punch holes in the report, the sleazier this organization appears!!!!!!

  42. Cheating, conspiring to cover it up, whining over a fair punishment, and now veering into bald-face lie territory? Oh, how how the mighty have fallen.

  43. Of course he calls himself that. If the investigator had dug even a little bit he would’ve known that’s how he refers to himself.

Has has been referring to himself like that for…oh, I don’t know…a while. At least ever since the investigation began.

  44. An odd term no doubt, yet the term “deflate” is used in context of weight loss…..the earlier text is very clear. That is a fact that Wells ignored to report. Funny how Wells left that out in order retain the context he desired

  45. This immeasurable idiocy may have finally shut up the Pats fans (at least here). Even THEY see how transparent and loony this is. The past few days, you could see their anger and counter-arguments surging, and now… crickets.

  46. They must be getting desperate in New England to say STUPID stuff like this! Free advice…..just “Shut Up.” You are not helping your case.

  47. If you called yourself the deflator because you were trying to lose weight you, and I, would have been in front of the cameras a month ago with others who know what the term meant and explained it.

The fact that the Pats are just not explaining it in some rebuttal is pure BS.

Its time they fess up to it and take the punishment. Brady was in on it and the ball guys, equipment guys were in on it so just give it up.

I supported the team and this fiasco until now. Its obvious what they did and time to just mosey up to the bar and take your medicine.

  48. Ok…for anyone on the fence or siding with da Pats…now is the time to give it up. Nothing screams guilt like the lamest of idiotic excuses.

  49. It makes perfect sense.

He’s fat, so he works where it’s cold.
The cold naturally lowers his internal PSI, so he gets skinnier.

    See, it’s all science.

  50. People immediately accepted the wells report as the truth, but will immediately dismiss the rebuttal that the Patriots provide. It’s pretty ridiculous to be honest.

  51. Hmm, is posting a ridiculous line by line argument filled with absurdity to a league report conduct detrimental to the league? There goes the 2017 first rounder.

  52. The suspension should be revised on appeal…. From 4 to 8 games for the stupidity of the explanation above…

  53. If they’re innocent, why did the pats suspend them indefinitely?

  54. Well, Patriot Fans….if you needed your proof before that your team is lying; now you have it. Even you have to laugh about this…because this explanation is absolutely ridiculous.

  55. I concede this is open to interpretation, but the “deflate and lose you jacket” is a bit hard to explain according to Well’s interpretation. The “deflate” metaphor for dieting might seem odd, but is less odd if your job was preparing footballs. At the very least it opens up some doubt.

And does anyone wonder why Wells didn’t include this quote? Shouldn’t all references to “deflating” have been included. Again, all evidence that didn’t fit the predetermined outcome was suppressed. That much is completely obvious.

  56. When I texted about my ‘whizzinator’, it had nothing to do with doctoring my urine…i just drank a lot of coffee that day…Barry Bonds.

  57. Maybe those guys gotta study the rule book and figure it out.

  58. So what this means is the patriots admitted to “bullying” their employees and now there needs to be another investigation opened.

  59. The sad thing is, there will be loads of Pats Kool Aid drinkers who will actually tell us how much this is actually what DID happen. As soon as they’re done donating to Kraft.

    Paging Mr. ampats…

  60. Whatever….fat guys are nicknamed Tiny and Slim. How many guys have you ever known called deflator? Nicknames are usually the opposite of the meaning, like the P.R. dept. for the Patriots being called Einsteins……

  61. Doesn’t sound that far fetched to me. Because here’s another text that shines light on it: “deflate and give somebody that jacket”

Doesn’t look to me like “deflate” is talking about footballs.

  62. I went into this respecting Tom Brady and the Patriots and looked forward to their response. After reading this, I can honestly say Ive lost respect for the entire organization and everyone in it. No personal responsibility or morals. These people are not men, they are cowards acting like children. Nice role models we have here.

  63. If the phrase “deflate”, as interpreted by Well’s, is so crucial, why didn’t he include all instances of its appearance in his report?

  64. Surely they’re trying to deflect with a little comedy at this point. Otherwise they wouldn’t have come up with such a ridiculous excuse.

  65. Ah yes, he was using a “needle” to “deflate” his fat self. Liposuction maybe? Oh and I’m sure Gisele had some tips, and THAT’s why they referenced Brady in the same breath…

  66. IF HE’S FAT HE WOULD BE CALLED THE INFLATOR,NOT THE DEFLATOR.
NOW I HAVE HEARD EVERYTHING, GIVE ME A BREAK!

  67. And they also explained that the first thing they do with new footballs is deflate them.
This is their world. How about all of the other texts? As bad as the Wells report here.
Read it in it’s entirety, will you?

  68. Who even uses the word deflate ? If you are dribbling a basketball and know it is over inflated, you say I need to let some air out of it. If the tire on your car is low you put air in it at the gas station. If you add too much air in it, you say I need to let air out. Economists se the only people I hear the word deflation from.

  69. To all of those not believing this story though, one thing I can’t figure out…. what does he actually mean then when saying the “deflate and give somebody that jacket.” line?

The context actually adds up with all of the texts, if nothing else I think it also is telling how hand picked all of the Wells Report texts were.

  70. There were no deflated footballs. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

    Here, look at this light.

  71. I’m a die hard Patriots fan an I must say myself this is kinda dumb lol. Could it be true, yes. Is it likely, no. I still believe that Brady might have told him to deflate the balls but I don’t think he told him to deflate them that low. 12.5 psi is a legal size where Brady wants them. People seem to forget that they still scored 30pts in 2nd half with the correct ball compared to 14 with deflated. The Colts game might have been closer of we kept them

  72. I don’t think Kraft understands this, but the worst thing that can happen for his franchise in terms of respect and likability by the world outside of Boston is if he has these sanctions overturned. Win the battle, lose the war. But now, there is no one in his inner circle to tell him the truth; just sycophants who say: right on, way to go, etc. I’ll admit that I’m most interested in watching this play out; Kraft brings out the petty in me so I’m kind of hoping he kicks Goodell’s butt.

  73. I hope Robert Kraft and Tom Brady read this and cringe. When do either of you decide to be a man and own it. You thought it was a meaningless rule so you broke it. You lied because there was a super bowl in two weeks and that was the most important thing at the time. Sorry. How hard is that? Dang. “He was trying to lose weight.” Bostonians are supposed to have more courage than this.

  74. Two questions:

First, how do you explain the text: “deflate and give someone else that jacket”?

Second, how does Ted Wells explain it. If the term “deflate”, as he interprets it, is so essential to his case, shouldn’t every instance of it in the texts be included in the report?

Laugh all you want folks, the Wells report is a farce.

  75. Is it that much of a reach to think that a person who actually called another human being a “Dorito dink” just isn’t the brightest tool in the shed and really would have the “deflator” nickname for himself?

    Nah not really.

  76. “Makes complete sense to me. I’ve seen nothing but excellent counters from the Pats and silences from all else.”

Really? You see all the comments on these posts? And tweets by national writers making fun of the Patriots? And you know SNL will join in, and probably the Onion.

Your team is the laughing stock of the country now.

  77. If it’s because he’s fat….wouldn’t he be nicknamed “INflator”? Or maybe…”NON-deflator”. UN-deflator? If he’s fat…then he isn’t doing much deflating.

This ridiculous excuse screams of guilt.

  78. Someone PLEASE take the shovel out of the Pats hands. They’ve dug themselves deep enough. WOW.

  79. All of NE better hope that the texts/photos on her hubby’s phone don’t upset Mrs Jas too much. Could get fairly expensive, and not just for Mr. Jas. Oh, the webs we weave.

  80. If they’re innocent, why did the pats suspend them indefinitely?

    —–
Probably the same reason police, teachers or politicians are suspended or take time off when they are being investigated for something.

  81. People immediately accepted the wells report as the truth, but will immediately dismiss the rebuttal that the Patriots provide. It’s pretty ridiculous to be honest
    ——————
No what is ridiculous is this rebuttal the patriots provided.

  82. When the author of this post begins his story with a blatant lie like this: “Jim McNally didn’t call himself “The Deflator because he took air out of footballs, more probably than not at the behest of Tom Brady.”

In fact, he calls himself that because he has to deflate each football twice when it comes from the factory. That is clearly stated in the Patriot’s response. So, the above statement is an outright lie from the word GO. The use of Deflator, as also explained in the document, referring to his weight, was only a secondary use of the name as the guys joked around about his size.

Just more of an example how Patriot haters take things out of context to further their jealousy. The Patriot’s response knocks every single thing people think they know about this case right out of the water.

  83. This is going to be so embarrassing for the NFL when this gets dropped. Don’t ever take on Tom Brady and the patriots.

  84. If ‘deflator’ means losing weight, then why would the fat guy call himself the Deflator. He would be the opposite of ‘the deflator’ right?

  85. Pats fans, you can’t seriously defend this? None of you are dumb enough to fall for lies that are this pathetically obvious.

  86. The problem with the Patriot’s defense, is that the suspension won’t be overturned due to questioning each bullet point in the document. Brady was cooked when he refused to turn over electronic records of specific conversations. It would be similar to an athlete refusing to take a random drug test. Then, two months later, when his body is clean, attack the corresponding circumstantial evidence that was used for his suspension. Everything becomes secondary to the refusal to consent to accepted NFL policy of transparency.

  87. Actually, the Patriots were mutually supporting each other to lose weight. Kraft is Deflator #1, McNally is Deflator #2, and Brady is Deflator #3. Brady was just trying to motivate a friend. See, now don’t all of you feel bad for these groundless accusations? If you would like to join in the weight loss program, please contact the Patriots so that you can be assigned your own special Deflator #. If you would like to gain weight, you will be assigned an Inflator #. It’s called “Teamwork” ladies and gentlemen!

  88. Doesn’t sound that far fetched to me. Because here’s another text that shines light on it: “deflate and give somebody that jacket”

Doesn’t look to me like “deflate” is talking about footballs.

    ________________________________

Then what would you say it is talking about, because it sure isn’t a nickname in this context. If it were about a nickname the word “and” immediately following it makes absolutely no sense. Think of it like they said Jim and give somebody that jacket, it makes no sense in that context.

The only thing that would fit their narrative and make sense is if they were saying “deflate (as in lose weight) and give somebody that jacket”. But that would be a stretch IMO, as nobody is that casual about telling someone they need to lose weight, even if that person is openly trying to lose weight. If that is the case then we would be looking at the borderline of another Bullygate situation.

  89. wo questions:

First, how do you explain the text: “deflate and give someone else that jacket”?

Second, how does Ted Wells explain it. If the term “deflate”, as he interprets it, is so essential to his case, shouldn’t every instance of it in the texts be included in the report?

Laugh all you want folks, the Wells report is a farce.
    ————————————————-
    Two questions:

First, if the two employees have done nothing wrong, why are they on unpaid indefinite suspensions?

Second, why did the employee threaten to go to ESPN?

Make excuses all you want sir, the Patriots and yourself with this post, are an embarrassment to the NFL…

  90. “The only thing that would fit their narrative and make sense is if they were saying “deflate (as in lose weight) and give somebody that jacket”
    —————————————————————
This is certainly plausible. As is the Patriot’s “fat” explanation. Pure speculation, but the Deflator could also be the nickname of a male prostitute who wears a ‘jacket’ for protection. Who he “deflates” is another issue entirely.

  91. Again…Bob Kraft has the mental capacity of Donald Sterling….This is ridiculous… We arent stupid and stop tying to treat us like we are…you cheated suck it up and move the eff on. YOU ARE EMBARRASSING YOURSELF!

  92. Patriots are like that guy who won’t admit it when he gets caught cheating. “So my text to her said I wanted to bang her in the shower. I meant I wanted to play with toy guns in the rain.” Come on now Patriots.

  93. the iceberg is melting. Pats legal counsil, Kraft, Brady, Yee……keep peeing on it, it’s melting fast.
Let’s see what or who comes out of the wood work to sing like a ‘Bird’

So if you suspended McNally last week, you suspended him because he’s fat? Sounds like he can sue Kraft for defamation of character and discrimination

  94. This is proof that Brady and Bellichek should have been suspended for the year. They won’t even own up to their cheating.

  95. I thought loosing the draft picks was kind of harsh but after reading that statement take away the first round picks in 2017 18 & 19!! What a joke!

  96. They do realize none of this is helping them. I guess he was blaming Tom Brady of his weight since in those same texts he called himself the deflator he was complaining how Brady pisses him off as well as specifically discussed inflating the balls like a balloon just to piss Brady off. It all makes sense now Pats, really it does. This is becoming a joke and further makes me believe Deflategate happened. They’d be better off shutting their mouths and taking their punishment.

  97. Please note…these Patriot releases are not meant for the average fan. They are meant for the Patriot fans. They have way more arrogance than common sense. This plays to just them.

  98. Thus the refusal for the second interview so they could create a plausible excuse. Seems they missed their mark.

  99. It’s about time for ole Kraft to dress up in his Patriot swag and wander around with his 25 year old “girl” friend…..boy that will show the haters……

  100. This is too freakin hilarious !! Kraft agrees for Wells to start from scratch meaning the 3 interviews by the NFL security of McNally didn’t count,Wells wants a second interview to explain this very statement, and now they hold this against him and make up some lame arse excuse.I hope the Pat’s keep talking, they are burying themselves – Too funny !!

  101. Bill Clinton: “Man…the Patriots are a bunch of delusional liars!”

  102. bonesawisready says: May 14, 2015 1:17 PM

    ———-

And the latter makes most sense IMO. True that most people wouldn’t be that casual… but you’re talking about a guy who called another human being “Dorito dink”. Clearly we’re not talking about a couple of mensa candidates.

  103. LMAO……maybe Kraft should have interviewed McNally a second time before he suspended him. McNally should sue Pats for suspension!
Insulting: Note to Pats: Give your fans a break, could get worse for you guys if Tommy Boy has to give up cell phone……..lots of pants on fire around NE clubhouse…..Kraft should be ashamed

  104. Conversation Wed in NE

Kraft: we gotta tell our fans something

Belichik: this McNally guy is a fat slob like most fans here in Boston. Let’s say he was talking about his fat belly and was talking about “deflating” it

Kraft: that’s kinda good. But do you think out fans will buy it?

belichick: our fans are the biggest dumbasses. They will buy anything we say. Let’s run with it. After we get the story out – our fans will then do the work of defending the story. Just release the story and then sit back.

  105. what horrendous damage control. should never have had the pre-SB press conferences, and now this. should have said nothing and let the appeals process work itself out, and hoped for a public opinion change, because the whole thing is stupid and the wells report is flawed…but that lame ‘deflator’ excuse takes the cake.

  106. Bob Kraft should be suspended for allowing these foolish excuses to be attached to the Patriots shield. Maybe he should go the Jim Irsay rehab route.

  107. what horrendous damage control. should never have had the pre-SB press conferences, and now this. should have said nothing and let the appeals process work itself out, and hoped for a public opinion change, because the whole thing is stupid and the wells report is obviously flawed…but that lame ‘deflator’ excuse takes the cake. even pissing patriots fans off.

  108. I will say this. The Wells Report was very thin on facts and so is this. It would be so much easier to say. “Yes, Tom asked them to deflate the balls, but only down to 12.5 psi. It appears that a little bit extra was taken out on some. Sorry.” Combine that with the sciencey stuff you get the reported psi. A much better explanation and a whole lot less embarrassment. Just in case the Pats are looking for a new PR guy I am available for hire.

  109. You gotta wonder about McNally and Jastremski. Are they holding NE over the barrel for hush money…while at the same time seeing how much ESPN will pay them? I think only 20% of the “truth” has been heard. This is going to be fun!

  110. Damn.. just stop… There has got to be somebody in that organization that can talk sense into them.. It’s over, you were lucky to get off this easy.. this is just embarrassing… do it for your fans.. they’re the ones that have to defend these idiotic rebuttals…

  111. “deflate and give somebody that jacket.”

PATs Defenders: You’re assuming the two fragments of this sentence are connected when it’s far more likely a run-on sentence since it’s a text. Most people don’t worry about proper grammar/spelling while texting and neither of these guys is bright so its likely they fall into that category.

Here’s a viable possibility (probably the phrasing is different, but you get the idea):

    “McNally: We hanging out tonight?”

“JJ: only if you don’t wear that ugly jacket. Meet me up in an hour.”

“McNally: I love this jacket! I’m not done with what Tom asked me to do yet.”

“JJ: Hurry up and …”deflate and give somebody that jacket.””

  112. Wow!! You know it’s bad when even Patriot fans are calling “BS” on this!!

  113. It would have been more believable if they claimed he was a world renowned Plastic Surgeon specializing in breast reduction.

  114. All these comments are based on a lie. Read the Patriot’s report. Read it. The premise in this post, and all others spreading it on the Net, is purposely a lie. The weight issue was a SECONDARY use of the word. The main nickname derived from the fact it WAS HIS JOB to deflate balls when they came from the factory. The willful ignorance on display is astonishing.

  115. The Patriots are making this worse than it has to be, lol. It’s also making Roger Goodell’s NFL look like a clown show, which means I’m for that. Like George Costanza said, it’s not a lie if you believe it.

  116. These two guys are Beavis and Butthead. Anything they had to say in texts to each other is believable. The point was you need to see the entire context of their texting to judge whether they arer serious when they say certain things or not.

  117. “deflate and give someone that jacket” probably references the favor Brady was giving him. It was known from the texts that Brady was giving the guy memorabilia in exchange for his dirty deeds. Maybe Brady was going to give him a Pats jacket for deflating the footballs illegally. 118. “Deflate and give somebody that jacket” = deflate the balls, win the Super Bowl, and give Brady that gold HOF jacket.

  119. ‘Deflate’ was a term they used to refer to losing weight. One can specifically see this use of the term in a Nov. 30, 2014 text from Mr. McNally to Mr. Jastremski: ‘deflate and give somebody that jacket.’ (p. 87).

I realize this looks bad with no context, but that text above gives it context proving they did use in in that context before.

  120. Is there any other way to read “deflate and give somebody that jacket” ?
Is there any other way to read “deflate and give somebody that jacket” ?
Is there any other way to read “deflate and give somebody that jacket” ?

    No. ‘Deflate’ = weight loss

  121. The NFL should raise Brady’s suspension to 8 games, and increase the fine to $2M for this pathetic lie… They are lying to the League, and the fans. A pathetic, tainted, POS franchise

  122. The thing is all you sheeple will just read the headlines and focus on deflator==fatboy. Nobody, not even the media, will read the actual patriots response. For those of you that don’t have the attention span to read yet another report here’s some goodies:

    * McNally was allowed to bring the balls to the sideline AFTER halftime, UNATTENDED.
    * There were witnesses that had observed McNally bringing balls to field unattended and Wells didn’t think it pertinent to interview them.
    * Wells had all McNally’s texts prior to their initial intervew
    * Patriots offered Wells to interview McNally on the phone, Wells refused.
    * McNally interviewed with Wells for 8 hours.
    * McNally often provided referees with needles, a pump, and gauges for the pre-game inspection.

Wells is a sham. This is why a Nobel prize winning chemist sided with the Patriots and Wells has to get an engineering firm whose claim to fame is that they proved that asbestos and second hand smoke doesn’t cause cancer.

  123. The NFL needs to accept Tom Brady’s offer to take this to court. They should agree that if the court finds Brady and the Patriots not culpable, all penalties will be removed. If the court finds that they are culpable or if more information comes to light that indicates other members of the organization participated in this, the penalties can be significantly increased. In a civil court proceeding, all evidence will be presented. Brady can’t refuse to turn over his phone. Through depositions, interrogatories and other methods, all of the information will become available to the court. The standard for liability or culpability is a “preponderance of evidence”. It’s about the same standard that was used in the Wells report, which was “more probable than not”. This will be one way to get to the bottom of this. If Brady is found liable or culpable; the penalties should be increased or decreased depending on the court’s finding. There should be provisions to increase the penalties based upon what they find out. For example, Brady could be suspended for a whole year. The Pats should list 2 first round picks and be fined $2million, etc. If the Pats are going to take the NFL to court, the penalties should be significantly higher.

  124. Oh another good one:

McNally was in Officials Locker Room with officials. He is a very large man. He took a bag with both Patriots and Colts balls. 25 balls. This very large fat man, with a very large bag of balls was not noticed or stopped when he left the officials locker room.

Yet, I bet nobody in media will report this, because nobody in the media will bother to read the rebuttal (or the report).

  125. This is the kind of crap that ensues after a ridiculous spectacle that was overblown by the NFL. This excuse is insulting to anyone’s intelligence, but it’s the kind of crap I expected.

Vikings and Panthers weren’t even fined for tampering with footballs. It seems totally fair that a multimillion dollar investigation was launched against the Patriots concerning the same issue. Regardless of what anyone thinks and what the outcome is, Goddell needs to go.

  126. Were they watching Caddyshack when Bill Murray was describing the gopher to come up with this.

When I heard ‘hes a big fellow’ that’s what I thought of.

  127. Honestly… If I was writing this rebuttal i would have probably just said “the deflator nickname is an inside joke that refers to weight not to deflating footballs” and left it at that. Makes the same point and doesn’t look as silly.

Please tell me why Brady didnt give up his phone (even when Wells said he doesnt even need the phone- just wants Brady’s team to send him any pertinent info)? Tell me why patriots fired McNally is he did nothing wrong?

  129. Reminds me of the Animal House scene when they were in the Student Court coughing “Bullshi(r)t”!

  130. So if he goes by the “Deflator” and as the organization said, no one did anything wrong, why was he and the other equipment dude fired. What a bunch of horse crap!

  131. BreakingNews!!! Jim McNally is opening numerous “Deflators” franchises and fully expects to put a huge needle into “Weight Watchers” market share….

  132. There’s also a guy who they refer to as “videor”…because he likes to take clips on his smartphone and upload them to you tube. Then there’s the “plower”…because he has a big garden at home and he’s always plowing.

  133. Pathetic

    Absolutely no self pride.

Too bad the appeal can’t add games.

    Really embarrassing.

    ——

Patriots didn’t fire McNally, they suspended him. Another misleading headline. Why didn’t Brady turn over phone? Unlike McNally, Brady had personal representation. Can you see a lawyer agreeing to that?

Honestly I won’t buy the deflator == fatso explanation until the Patriots provide additional evidence.

  135. I’m pretty sure Brady could’ve been suspended JUST for failing to fully cooperate with the investigation. So challenging small details of the report are not likely to get you anywhere.

He and the Pats just need to say made a mistake, sorry. Then shut up and move on.

  136. New Urban Dictionary Term;

Deflatio – The act of giving absurd answers in trying to explain yourself after being caught in a compromising situation.

    Example. New England Patriots

  137. I made the mistake of reading this while I was still at work and I was laughing so hard, I actually had to step away from my desk. A person would have to be 300 different kinds of stupid to believe this crapola. The Patriots are the laughingstock of the NFL! Couldn’t happen to a more deserving team.

  138. How do we explain the “deflate and give somebody that jacket.” (p. 87). What context is the word deflate being used here?? Could there be a chance it was referring to losing weight and giving a way a jacket? The excuse is comical and far fetched…but he did call him Dorito Dink.

  139. …but in all honesty, the objective would say that the case against the Patriots is extremely week,at best, and that is a pretty accurate statement. There is no smoking gun.

  140. I could’ve made a better excuse than that & sure if the lawyers wanted to come up with something better they could’ve but instead it’s the truth simple as that I’ve worked out and said let’s inflate the bulk up I’ve use that term of my own friends! Really!!!

    Defend the wall Pats Nation

    💪☝️☝️☝️☝️💪

    TB12 + BB + Kraft = GREATNESS
    😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  141. Really!!! Please don’t insult our intelligence. NFL should increase both the Brady’s 4-games suspension & Patriots’ $1M fine because of these stupid & laughable lies, which make the Pats look more guilty.

  142. It’s sad that this is the one and only thing that people get all holier than thou about. It is just as likely that this guy called himself this because he was always trying to lose weight as it is evidence of a vast conspiracy going back seven years. It’s certainly plausible given that these two guys works around footballs so much.

The only thing that matters is what the judge thinks based on the evidence once this gets to an actual courtroom with real professionals.

  143. Exactly. The only reason people don’t buy this is they’ve been convinced by the bogus information that’s been on the airwaves for months. You don’t hear people screaming about 2psi or “stealing the balls”. Don’t you find it bull how wells cut and pasted bits and pieces of texts to paint a story? I’m a lawyer and this was clearly advocacy not investigation. Advocacy is always effective until the other side lays out their case. Read the rebuttal and you’ll see this is the only weak point and it’s only weak because it seems weird. But Doritos dink and 40 year olds playing beer pong is weird too. Dude is weird. If this is the only evidence you’re convicting Brady on you’re not being honest with yourself.

  144. Here’s what I don’t get.

So, this thing has been dubbed “deflategate” in the media from day one. The guys calls himself “the deflator” in a text or two and everyone goes “Aha! There’s proof!”

But it’s just a knee-jerk reaction to the word. It’s not proof of anything. And everyone is ridiculing this excuse from NE that he’s referring to losing weight. But why is that somehow less credible – other than the word association makes everyone jump to conclusions based on assumptions?

    So our choices are:

    1) “the deflator” means “I tampered with footballs after they were inspected by the refs at the order of Tom Brady and deflate them below legal levels”.

    or…

    2) “deflate” is a term for losing weight.

Everyone is choosing number one because, again, they’re jumping to conclusions based on word association, but the train of thought involved is no more credible or believable than the Patriots’ explanation if you’re willing to step back and look at things objectively.

  145. Oh my goodness…put down the koolaid. Thats like saying “hey…they call my girlfriend mattress back because she loves to try new mattresses in the matterss stores” Surrrrrr…THATs why that is her nickname.

Anyone, with any objectivity at all, after reading all the text has to come to the conclusion that the deflater tag referred to footballs. There are over 300 million people in the US. Sooooo…the only person out of that 300 million who uses “deflate” as analogous to weight loss just happens to be the guy responsible for care of the footballs. Dammmmmmm….what a totally unlucky guy if that is the case. And I am sure all the text referring to the needles…you know, like the one that he said needed to have cash wrapped around it and a new pair of sneakers when they gave it to him was referring to his B-12 injection since he is on this ‘deflating” health kick. As Chris Carter would say…”Come On Man!!”

Hell…I like Brady and don’t know if he knew about this or not (although the text and all the phone calls from Brady sure point to him knowing), but I am 100% sure of what “deflator” meant.

  146. You have to look at this from the Patriot’s point of view. They don’t need to justify the nickname, they just need to provide some cover for the desperate Patriot fans who are willing to say or do anything to deny that they cheated.

And sure enough, read some of the posts above and what do you see, Patriot fans trying to tell the rest of us that there is justification in the use of the nick name. Unbelievable.
