Ryan Tannehill gets $21.5 million fully guaranteed at signing

Getty Images

More details are emerging in connection with the next contract signed by Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill. And the most important detail relates to the amount that is fully guaranteed at signing.

Per a league source, Tannehill receives $21.5 million fully guaranteed at signing.

Another $3.5 million becomes fully guaranteed March 2016.  In March 2017, another $14.475 million converts to being fully guaranteed. The remaining $5.525 million in payments guaranteed for injury only becomes fully guaranteed in March 2018.

As a practical matter, then, Tannehill will get $25 million fully guaranteed over the next two seasons — unless the Dolphins cut him before next March and let him walk away with $21.5 million over one year.

In all, it’s a four-year extension worth $77 million, which equates to $19.25 million per year in new money average. Which is a very good deal for a guy who has not yet emerged as a clear-cut, short-list franchise quarterback.

  1. as a Fins fan, i can only say .. “ouch”…

but then Ross seems to reward mediocrity, so maybe its not a surprise

  2. He gets 96m over a 6 year contract and 45m is guaranteed. PFT does not have all the facts as usual. As for good money for Tannehill, it sure is but its also a good deal for Miami. He is becoming a top 10 QB and moving up each year. He is simply the best QB we have had since Marino and these days its not easy finding a franchise QB. Brady will retire in the next couple of years and Miami has a chance to do some damage with their young talented team.

  3. Love to see a QB that can succeed in the NFL without cheating or lying about cheating. Thanks Ryan.

  4. Homie all set….the best thing financially that could happen to him would be to get cut after this year. Another team would take an 8 figure flier at him.

  5. Wow……a quarterback that should be improving much faster than he is gets a big contract that will help keep the “Fins” in salary cap hell once Suh gets hurt…..oh well maybe they can celebrate the win over New England if Brady is still suspended…..or suffer the defeat at the hands of a benchwarmer…….

  6. QBs are literally being priced out of the league, lol.

But for the Dolphins, who’s out there that’s available and definitely better than Tannehill? No one that I can think of, which means they need to pay more to keep him otherwise some QB hungry bottom-feeder will be pricing him out of their team.

For QBs, non-premium talent is getting premium pay because of the shortage of premium talent around the league. The only thing that will help is the speed at which the cap is increasing.

  7. This is how fools run their teams… half the salary cap tied up in Tannehil and Suh… yea, that will get you a balanced roster…

And people wonder why the Pats win every year ? This is why ! Pay top 10 money to a quarterback who is still trying to make the leap to better than average. You can’t win building a team like this…

  8. They have added quite a bit to that team. If Tannehill is the guy it’s a great deal. I think they need to push for the playoffs or else, coaching staff wise. Will 8 wins inspire management to keep Philbin around?

  9. Reminds me a bit of when the Bills went overboard on Fitzpatrick. Tannehill’s better, but not by a whole lot.

  10. Can you say franchise killer, back to back years Dolphins had a chance to make the playoffs and they lost season finale to the Jets both times and Tannehill paid terrible both times

  11. Reasonable contract for both sides. Got about the same as ADalton and I would rate them about the same. Maybe even give a slight edge to Tannehill. Both are outside the top 10-12 QBs, but in the next group.

  12. So surprising that many vociferous Patriots haters are in here cooing over the Dolphins. I did not see that coming. Now I am off to the Jets and Bills articles, if I can even find any.

  13. I do not get the hate for Tannehill.

    2014 Season
    R. Wilson: 3475/20/7/63%

    Tannehill: 4045/27/12/66%

  14. Tannehill has the gun & now it’s time for Philbin to let him fire it down the field for a change if not FIRE PHILBIN, a good coordinator BAD coach!!!

  15. Has fatal flaws. Can’t throw deep, has awful pocket awareness and hasn’t shown the ability to take over a game. Dolphins fans harp on the OL in front of him, but Luck has had worse.

When you had him under control for two more years at less money per year than you just paid him, why do this now?

He is a decent QB making very good money.

  16. Silly money!

I know that there’s a salary cap, but one day they will have to bring in a contract cap. No player is worth this much money – let alone a player who hasn’t achieved anything of note so far in his career.

  17. There are only a handful of teams that have a bright outlook at the most important position, Miami being one of them. Tannehill is arguably top ten and has shown steady improvement over his 3 years. May never be elite but he is a guy that they can win with.

  18. Eat that Seattle….and you don’t want to pay Wilson. If you think for a second he shouldn’t get $120 mill deal you are a fool. Teams are paying Ryan T. $77 mill.
You are going to have to pay up!
It is such bad PR to not pay Wilson…he’s done EVERYTHING right.

  19. Dolphins fans keep pointing out his stats and that he got better every year so that makes him a franchise QB in their eyes. You can do a lot worse than Tannehill but franchise QB’s don’t shrink when the playoffs are on the line 2 years in a row and get outplayed by Geno Smith. The dolphins were caught in a bad spot though cuz they have to pay him but he hasn’t really proven that he can put the team on his shoulders and take them into the playoffs. Franchise QB’s don’t need excuses of having a bad O line or team around them for their failures, they rise above it and succeed in spite of whats around them.

  20. Just some of the QBs Tannehill has outgunned at one point or another…..

    Sam Bradford
    Russell Wilson
    Andrew Luck
    Matt Ryan
    Tom Brady
    Phillip Rivers
    Ben Roethlisberger
    Alex Smith

    Good snag!
    Go Phins!

  21. The winner in this Russel Wilson.

If you are going to compare Wilson to Tannehill you have to add running yards cause Russ can run Tannehill not so much.

Can’t believe I said something positive about Wilson. Yuck!

  22. He’s one of only a few young up and coming QB’s in the NFL.

Luck and Carr come to mind too.

  23. Lions fan here. The Mammals not only took Suh, but it looks as though they don’t appreciate the upcoming sting of cap hell. We’ve lived through it and are in the process of changing it, thankfully. Go Lions!

  24. Some faux fin fans think he is the second coming. Even after laying eggs after facing Geno and EJ along with their backups, getting wins for their respective teams. While he has shown some progression. He has also showed his ceiling on certain throws. His inability to hit a deep pass or put his team on his shoulders in Nov or Dec is quite worrisome.

Tannenbaum also signed his prior QB to a hefty extension, who had a better resume, only to lose his job and the QB is now playing in Philly.

  25. There are only 5 qb’s clearly better than RT in the AFC and 2 of them (Brady & Manning) are aging and 2 others (Rivers & Rothles) are getting just as close. So only Luck is young & better. Its not a bad deal at all. Especially if he continues upward.

  26. As a Bills fan, I can say that I’m not scared to face him. He is a good QB but up to this point I don’t see greatness in his game.
Obviously, he can get better, as he did this year after the rumors of him being benched after a shaky start of the year.

I’m not suprised by the numbers of the contract, he’s being paid like a good starting NFL QB that could get better, if he does, he’ll become underpaid.

  27. I know they had no choice but this will turn out to be a terrible signing. Somehow he still is the greatsst Big 12 b to ever play in NFL. That really says a lot.

  28. MrWonderful. Shrinks vs Jets ? Really? Last I checked Tannehill doesn’t play on defense. Geno career day had zip to do with Ryan and all to do with Miami D shating the bed.

  29. 139 Sacks for a loss of 970 yards in 3 years. Only delusional Phin fans think this is a positive. Throw it away man.

    _____________
I do not get the hate for Tannehill.

  30. This is why I thought people made too big of a deal about Matt stafford contract, when he signed his extension. $20mill a year is the going rate for a young starting QB hitting free agency. That’s the starting point now. If he’s good enough to keep, someone will pay him $20mill.

The winner in this Russel Wilson.

If you are going to compare Wilson to Tannehill you have to add running yards cause Russ can run Tannehill not so much.

    _________________

Tannehill, a former WR, can run. … In fact, the argument could be made the Dolphins would be better if he ran more.

  32. Wow, Seahawks, you screwed up big time by not signing Wilson yet. This mediocre qb just priced Wilson way out of what the Seahawks were hoping to pay Wilson.

  33. Tannehill is a damn good QB and he doesn’t cheat like Brady. Ryan worked his can off for that contract and deserves every penny.

    LOL the Patriots are finished!!!
    this is awesome.

  34. I have no affinity to Tannehill or the Dolphins, but he seems to be an improving QB. Only played one year in college and has improved every year.

When I looked up his numbers from last year, he had about 50 yards less than Brady on 8 more attempts. There were a group of about 10 QB’s in the 6.9-7.1 range for yards per attempt. I think people have heard he can’t throw deep and just made it gospel without actually seeing proof.

Seems like a smart move the Miami.

  35. 19 mil a year for a guy with….

    a 23-25 record,

    a 6/4 TD/INT ratio

that has never won a playoff game?

    Incompetence.

  36. Very few QB can over come a bad defense, we need to judge what he can do along with the talent he has. The owner of the Dolphins says what he will pay, and if he thinks he has a franchise QB, and of course he cares less about my opinion, and sure as hell he cares less about the trolls opinion. Bill

  37. Lot of money for a QB to help you finish in 3rd place in your division.

And that’s assuming they’ll beat out the Jets, which isn’t a given.

  38. I am not going to throw around Stats, but Tannehill is a top 12 QB and these are what the QBs paydays are going to be going forward. I think the Dolphins got a good deal on this one because they can control his payout and Cap hits over the next 3 years. Which brings me to…

The Dolphins are going to be in Cap Hell says all the Haters.. Guess what? They are actually under by $8.8M for next year and the Cap is going up! LOL at all you sheep just repeating what you heard months ago. We have Suh and made $ room for him. Dolphins are in great Cap shape through 2017. You all are full of you nonsense. You simply do not understand the economics of the NFL. If Tannehill walked he would certainly $15m from any team. Suh would have got the same offer from Raiders and Lions. Also, everyone said we would choke on Wallace’s Contract years ago… Well, that didn’t happen either. Tannehills performance was just behind Luck and ahead of Brees and Wilson last year. Starting QBs get this much… even mediocre starters, so at least we finally have a franchise QB who is better than mediocre and on the cusp of Elite.

  39. Kind of funny to see Jets and Bills fans chiming in with an opinion about a QB. Jim Kelly is the only good quarterback either team has ever had lol

  40. Tannyhill is better than Brady. Dosen’t have to cheat to win and will prove it as his team gets better these next two seasons. After that Brady will be finished. Cheater looking at 40. Not exactly a bright future.

  41. Hard work, high character and an even higher ceiling. Those of you knocking this deal saying “Tannehill hasn’t even made the playoffs,” remember the following: In three years, his best receiver has been Mike Wallace. The offensive line has played like swiss cheese and been riddled with injury, the kid had just 19 starts in college and has already switched systems once in his pro career…

Yet in 2014 managed to put up some pretty solid numbers:
    4,045 yds, 27 tds to 12 ints, 66.4 comp. % and a 92.8 passer rating.

He’s only going to get better in year two of Lazor’s system with REAL weapons at his disposal.

    A+ move by the Fins.

  42. He has done pretty well. Probably be talking about HOF for Tannehill by now if he knew other teams defensive play calls and cheated like Brady.
    #patriotfansactliketheydontcheat

  43. mister305miami

No, he shrunk against the worst defensive backs in the NFL last year and the year before. I’m talking about players who aren’t even supposed to be in the NFL like Darren Walls, Marcus Williams, Dawan Landry and a bad rookie in Calvin Pryor. I didn’t mean he played against Geno obviously. Dee Milliner picked him off twice in 2013 with the playoffs on the line. So ya, he did shat the bed

  44. That sound you just head was the Seahawks front office smacking their collective foreheads for not giving Wilson a better offer a week ago

  45. Ryan Tannehill is worth $19.25 million per? Can we expect your staff to shred him based on his pay as they’ve done with Matt Stafford?

Also, it takes a totally delusional fan to defend this move.

  46. lots of tannehill’s haters here… if your qb spends time on his back every play, his number will be worse than tannehill’s for sure.

  47. Nobody ever said he isn’t better than the Bills or Jet QBs. That’s not saying much. What we are saying is that an awful lot of money for a mediocre QB. A team that keeps putting itself in salary cap hell just to cut and trade players 2 years later. Tannehill is somewhat competent and on occasion looks pretty darn good against middle of the road defenses. But when it’s on the line like 2 seasons ago, when all he had to do was beat the Bills or Jets to get in the playoffs, what happened? Folded like a house of cards! Common denominator? Very good defenses. On the Bills with that D and WRs, he’s playoff bound. On the Fins, not so much.

  48. Most of you are saying who got the better deal, Tanny or the Dolphins. The only answer is no one knows. He played 1 yr at QB in college, which is why his numbers are climbing as fast as they are. When does he peak? Did he already? Wilson and Luck are the only 2 young QB’s with more potential though. My guess is with the first decent Oline he’s had yet, and this being his 4th yr, that he is a top 8 QB this season. Key word is “guess”. We will know in 2 years if this was smart for the Fins or not.

  49. Not saying Tannehill is a bad QB, but he is nowhere near Rivers, so please stop the comparisons. Just for some FYI, Rivers was 33-15 his first three years as a starter, Tannehill has yet to have a winning season.

But then who knows, maybe you Dolphin fans have the right team at the right time to go very far this year.

    ………………………………………………………………..

I’m not sure who your team, but it’s obvious you don’t know much about the Dolphins. I love when people chime in about other teams that they might watch play a couple times a season. EVERY player the Fins traded or cut, was because of lack of talent. Nothing to do with the salary cap. Now if you want to bash them for having a former inept GM(Ireland), that would be accurate. So annoying people speaking without knowing facts.

  51. This is a good move by the Dolphins. My question for those criticizing this signing is this: Name a free agent QB that’s better than him. There is no one. Great QBs that DON’T cheat are hard to find.

  52. No denying Tannehill is pretty tough, but there are many QBs out there who are just as tough. People knock him because he doesn’t use his mobility/speed enough, but I actually see that as one of his assets. Mobile QBs who tend to use their legs to get out of situations rather than becoming better at their craft end up getting injured sooner or later. IMO.

  53. Name a free agent QB that’s better than him.
    ===========================
How about we just name free agent QBs, who are under 30 years old, who weighs more than 240 pounds, took chemistry in college, was born under the sign of Gemini, and drive Volvos?

I mean if you are going to have restrictions . . . .

  54. For those who compare Russell Wilson and Ryan Tannehill. Here is passing and running combined 2014. Full disclosure, I’m a Hawks fan and expected this to be different.

    Russell Wilson Ryan Tannehill
    YDS 4324 4356
    TD 26 28
    INT 7 12
    FUM 5 4
    PR 95.0 92.8

These are comparable numbers, basically a wash.
The difference is the team they play for. Russell should get paid this type of money, but he’ll get more because of the Super Bowls, either here or elsewhere. And I’m a fan of his. Pay him.

  55. Love how the market is now set for mediocre to average QBs. Sure Tannehill is solid and improving, but how does a guy who hasn’t even made it to the playoffs deserve a big contract like this?

Come to think of it, how does a moron like Joe Philbin still have a job?

  56. Hasn’t won a playoff game.

Has a losing record vs the division

    Through 48 games 23-25 .479

    Good job Dolphins

    signged
    All of NE

  57. He came in the league young. I knew it be two years before he became viable. Now he’s more than that, he went from viable to ascending.

  58. I’m not sure who your team, but it’s obvious you don’t know much about the Dolphins. I love when people chime in about other teams that they might watch play a couple times a season. ———————————-
That’s funny! Players like Wallace, Ellerbe, Gibson, Bush all had talent before they got to Miami. I also see how you declined to comment on the scenario I mentioned how Tannehill folded like a house of cards. We’re my facts concerning Miami inaccurate there as well, lol!
    BTW: Bills fan since 1981

  59. This has Tannenbaum written all over it. Pay big bucks to a mediocre young QB. Mark Sanchez part 2.

  60. Dolphins pay a quarterback who can’t even get them to the playoffs. It must drive dolphin fans crazy knowing the patriots have the best two QB’s in the division

  61. Hey pats trolls, take a look at brady’s* stats his first 4 yrs. He never got over 90 passer rating, Tannehill did it year 3. Brady’s* highest sack total was 41, Tannehill, had 58 and 46 because of line issues. Brady* never threw for more than 4000 yards until his 5th yr in the league, Tannehill did it in his 3rd. So brady* wasn’t all that in his early years, and Tannehill is just getting started. It’s time to right things in the AFCE, to when the Fins dominated.

  62. Hate to bore you with details, but in Brady’s 1rst 4 yrs he was undefeated in the playoffs, got 4 rings and played in 2 Pro Bowls. Tannehill hasn’t played in a playoff gm or had a winning season. Cite all the stats you want and it is a team game, but leadership, clutch play, come from behind wins, etc count too. Compare Tannehill to Brady? Don’t make me laugh. Troll that.

  63. Just think. Little Danny could have had Tannehill and kept all his draft picks, but decided he would rather take Bob the Bust instead.

  64. Tannehill gets $21.5 million fully guaranteed at signing – Quickly sign before fins mgt sobers up !

I do not get the hate for Tannehill.
    2014 Season
    R. Wilson: 3475/20/7/63%
    Tannehill: 4045/27/12/66%
    ********************************************
You may not get it randy8123 but I DO !! Russell Wilson has taken his teams to the last two SB’s and won 1 (and another one pending, lol) By the way, RW has someone named “Marshawn Lynch” in the backfield that is a major asset in their offense !! However, with all that said, I could give a flying rat’s arse about Tannehill’s contract (good for him). It’s only fair that RW receive some sort of real compensation for his “ACTUAL” accomplishments not “POTENTIAL” accomplishments !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  67. Brady started putting up HOF numbers way later in his career. The first 3 SBs were won by Belichick’s defences. So it’s certainly too early to judge these young QB’s in the league. Give them some time.

  68. Good move for a hard working, durable, no drama, non diva improving player.
The organization was smart to get this deal done first, before Russel Wilson and Andrew Luck set the bar to measure up to. This probably saved us a few million.
Tannehill is good. Threw for 4000 yds last year.
He is not Brady, very few QBs are that elite, but he’s shown toughness and quiet leadership by work ethic. Think of all the drama, excuses, and attitude you see in Cutler, Smith, Manziel, RGIII, Manuel, Kaepernick, Palmer, McKown, Newton and more… We don’t have to deal with that.

He needs to work on the deep ball, but 4000yds in this dink & dunk offense is ideal for him. Our defense gave up 2-3 last minute leads against playoff teams. A QB shouldn’t be judged by a def failure but reality is an 8-8 Team not a 10-6 team. Team record not QB.

That said, tom Brady lost 4 out the last 5 SuperBowls he’s been in.
And one can argue that Tom didn’t win last year’s game – Pete Carroll gave it away and some credit goes to NE DEF for the INT.
all while Tom was on the bench.

  69. Great. Cam Newton’s price tag just went up to $25M per year. Thanks loads, Ryan…

  70. He is certainly as good as Matt Ryan, who also compiles great stats in garbage time and who also can’t play a lick in the post season.

Of course Kelly was from the U 1st!

  72. Seriously? I want some of what they’re smoking in Miami.

With his record, you people really think he’s worth this contract? He’s not even worth the amount of the signing bonus.

And if you think so, then you’re just as delusional as the management staff who gave it to him.

On, and BTW, my team’s QB is some guy by the name of Brees.

  73. Name a free agent QB that’s better than him.

    —————————————————
Why limit it to free agents? Why don’t we compare him against his peers, in other words, other starting QBs.

His contract puts him in line to be as great as Drew Brees. Really, seriously? Hold on…I’m choking, let me catch my breath.

All that heat must really be getting to the ole’ guys with the purse strings in Miami.

  74. Got some mixed feelings on this one. It was time to deal with his contract and the numbers seem mutually beneficial. I think he is aware it’s time to put up or he will exit the Dolphins. The same for Philbin. Ryan is talented but it does not convey on the field. Hopefully he is working with his cadre of receivers already.

  75. I am not going to throw around Stats, but Tannehill is a top 12 QB and these are what the QBs paydays are going to be going forward. I think the Dolphins got a good deal on this one because they can control his payout and Cap hits over the next 3 years. Which brings me to…

    ——————————————————
Top 12? HA HA HA HA…with a 23-25 record? HA HA HA HA…61.9% career completion rate? HA HA HA HA…63 TD versus 42 receptions? HA HA HA HA…no playoffs? HA HA HA HA…losing division record?

    I’m still laughing.

  76. Very few QB can over come a bad defense, we need to judge what he can do along with the talent he has. Brees has been doing it for years. In fact, he won a SB with a bad defense.

This kid is not a franchise QB and not talented enough for that kind of money. Ever.

He’s not even talented enough to shine the shoes of Brady, Brees, both Mannings, Ben, Luck, Stafford, hell – even Romo.

I’ve been laughing since I read this and just can’t stop!

I was with you till you said that. Brees led the league in passing last year.( tied with Rothlisberger). In NO way did Tannahill have a better year.
