The Rams interviewed a pair of former NFL quarterbacks for their vacant quarterbacks coach job this offseason, before choosing Chris Weinke over Jeff Garcia.

But they found a spot for Garcia anyway.

According to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Rams hired Garcia as an offensive assistant.

That’s a rung down the ladder from Weinke’s job, but it’s clear the Rams were looking to add some playing experience to the coaching staff.

Garcia was the more accomplished quarterback of the pair during his stints with the 49ers and Eagles and others, but Weinke has more experience in coaching, after being thrown into the deep end as a rookie on the 1-15 2001 Panthers.

Those two will get to go to work on Nick Foles and third-rounder Sean Mannion for the moment, along with Case Keenum and Austin Davis.

The future of the position was thrown up in the air when the Rams traded Sam Bradford to the Eagles, so having plenty of experience working with that spot can only help.
