NFL suspends Marcell Dareus for Week 1

AP

Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus will miss the season opener against the Colts.

The NFL announced today that Dareus has been suspended without pay for the first game of the regular season for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. Dareus can participate in the offseason and preseason, but he won’t be able to practice or play during Week One.

Dareus, who was arrested last year on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, acknowledged that the suspension was warranted.

“Last year, I made a mistake involving possession of a banned substance,” Dareus said in a statement. “The NFL’s discipline for this conduct is part of the drug policy, and I apologize to my family, my teammates, the entire Bills organization and Bills fans that I will miss one game as a result of my mistake. I will work intensely that week and will be extremely happy to contribute to a win in week two for the Bills.”

Dareus has been to the Pro Bowl the last two years. He’ll be missed by the Bills in the first game of the season.

  1. God forbid that he may have been generally aware of something that may or may not have been going on, that’s a 4 game suspension. Drugs are totally fine, though.

  2. Let’s see:
Use of PEDS = 1 game
Balls in legal range based on ideal gas law = 4 games, 1 mill, and loss of draft pics

    Yeah…thats fair.

  3. If this were a Pats player, I’m sure their fans would be crying to see Goodell’s phone, the drug tester’s phone, a camera of Dareus peeing into a cup, a camera of that cup being carried to the testing facility, and a background check on the person reading the results. Otherwise, it’s all just “circumstantial evidence” that he violated the substance abuse policy, right?

  4. This one stings for sure. His contract extension is looming and his legal problems are my biggest concern giving him a long term deal. He needs to grow up.

  5. arrested having drugs on him, drug equipment and failing the drug test: 1 game suspension

punching your fiancée in the face, evidence on camera: 2 game suspension

probably deflated ball, generally aware, no concrete proof: 4 game suspension

  6. 1 game for PED’s, it’s a good thing he didn’t tell someone to do any adjustment to anything, he’d probably be suspended for a year! We must protect the integrity of the game!

  7. Refreshing to have a player admit he was wrong, apologizes, and accepts his punishment. Far better role model than a lying cheater, who cries when he gets caught.

  8. He had a relative die last year. Must have needed some self-medication. I hope he’s over it now.

  9. UPDATE: Bob Kraft has announced that he will not be appealing this suspension for he feels it’s whats best for the long-term benefit of the team.

  10. As a close friend of the organization I would like to feel for my peers within the Bills FO. This has implications on the Week 1 game, yes. But does it have implications on Dareus’ performance moving forward? Perhaps it may light a fire within, perhaps it may make him bitter. These are questions my peers must face.

  11. He’ll be back to play against the NE Cheater’s in week 2!
Big diff with him and Brady – he admitted his wrong doing and he didn’t cheat in a game….

  12. Knew this would be full of pathetic Pats fans. For people who don’t think your titles are tainted, you sure spend a lot of time whining about it.

  13. I wish he would have thought twice before doing what he did, but there is nothing that can be done now. At least he owned up to his faults unlike some other players throughout the league…

Though it is only 1 game, he will be missed… especially since we play Luck and the Colts high-powered passing offense. I hope whoever spells him is ready to go get to that quarterback… Stephon Charles, Alex Carrington or Corbin Bryant? I am hoping for Charles… he made waves last time I watched him play.

  14. It wasn’t PED’s or cheating. He got caught with a small amount of synthetic weed. Don’t compare this to the serial cheaters in New England.

  15. people keep saying “ideal gas law” ok thats 1 point thats really not anything to do with the suspension thats 1 game situation the suspensions and fines are for several reasons …… this has been going on for quite sometime and the fact the balls were regardless if deflated to legal levels actually TAMPERED with after the officials approved them. 2nd the TEXT messages dotn suggest weight loss when combined with everything. and 3 when TOM failed to cooperate he violated the NFL bylaws. the fact we got here because teams reported that the balls were being tampered with in the first place is HUGE as well because when combined with EVERYTHING an intelligent human being would find that its atleast a 51% chance the balls were purposely being tampered with after the officials approved them and for 3 i left out a ton of other “circumstantial” evidence that when combined can only conclude that it certainly is more likely than not the balls were tampered with and likely have been tampered with for longer than 1 game. the text messages, the gifts, the lying of brady saying he had no idea who this guy was,the failure to cooperate, and a long list of other things id say 4 games is a slap on the wrist !

Without comment on the fairness of the 1 game suspension, my understanding is that Dareus is being suspended for possession of PEDs; his use hasn’t been confirmed via a test.

  17. Ok, these Patriots fans have to get over it. Its not about how many PSI’s are in the ball. Its about knowing and screaming to circumvent the rules to gain a competitive advantage.

So ya an organization knowingly circumventing rules is more serious that a player smoking a joint.

  18. Marcell Dareus, Nigel Bradham, dare I say they’ve got a culture of cheating in Buffalo. Oh, wait, Buffalo stinks. Never mind.

  19. This wasn’t PED’s or cheating. He got caught with a small amount of synthetic weed. A far cry from the serial cheaters in New England.

  20. if Dareus were on New England we’d have Kraft complaining, NFLPA asking for Goodell to recuse himself from the case and fans shouting set up

  21. Brady and Cheatriot Nation could learn from the class Darius displayed. Owned his violation, apologized and accepted penalty. When he returns, it will all be behind him.

Brady and Belichick need to be banned and stripped from all the record books.

  22. Everybody comparing Dareus’ 1 game suspension to Deflategate/Tom Brady’s4 game suspension and calling it unfair because its drugs vs. air in a football is not taking everything into consideration:

    1) Dareus violated the leagues substance abuse policy. The drug in question is not performance enhancing. It was a personal choice affecting nobody else or the outcome of the game.
    2) This is Dareus’ first violation in the league
    3) The Patriots organization has been caught cheating before. In my eyes, this makes New England and Tom Brady repeat offenders
    4) Dareus was forthcoming during the entire process and upfront with the league. He cooperated with the league process.
    5) New England and Tom Brady were deemed to be highly likely to have committed the violation. This is the NFL’s standard as good enough to institute punishment. New England and Tom Brady were also deemed to not fully cooperate with the investigation.
6)The deflation of the footballs is deemed to violate the integrity of the game. It is this and the lack of cooperation that differentiates the 4 game and 1 game suspensions.

Hope this clears things up. GO BILLS!!!

  23. PEDs, ok. But if it was weed, this is ridiculous.

Stop suspending NFL players for smoking weed! It’s beyond stupid. It’s downright archaic.

  24. Brady was suspended for stonewalling the investigation. He wouldn’t give up his cell phone because he knows Belicheat would face a lifetime ban. Patriots cheat and I will never stop saying so. Neither will anyone else except the whiny Pats fans. Without cheating you accomplished NOTHING!!!!!

  25. If you don’t cooperate with an investigation 100%, all you’re doing is leaving probable cause on the table.

It was Brady’s mistake, Pats fans. Don’t be mad at the NFL, be mad at your hero.

  26. The “All Suspension” team is starting to come together for 2015 season.

  27. One thing’s for sure, they can’t take away any championships.

    Just lose baby.

  28. I love to new washed out obsessed NE fans trolling for negative attention. No, the way the Pats tried to explain the ideal gas law wasn’t correct and the way you try to use it as proof of innocence here is like watching a toddler attempt to figure out how to open a door with a child lock on it. It’s funny at first but then becomes sad after a while.

Your loss of integrity only increases when you deny any wrongdoing happened- best course of action is to admit it and take the punishment like a man. Kind of like the subject of this article.

  29. My understanding is Rex Ryan is furious at Dareus. Not for getting caught with drugs and being suspended, but for apologizing and taking responsibility for his actions.

Ryan realizes he’ll have to work on Dareus to get him up to par in “the Jets way” (now Bills way) of doing things.
Namely, to always be arrogant, belligerent, sarcastic, and above all — ignorant.

  30. I love all the Pats haters are saying how he’s more “man then Brady because he confessed.” Yeah…a whole season AFTER taking the drugs. He’s only confessing because they caught him and have actual evidence supporting it. Unlike the deflated footballs, of which they had no REAL EVIDENCE.

  31. I love to watch the washed out obsessed NE fans trolling for negative attention. 32. This is just beautiful. oh wait a Bill got caught cheating and he’s a big name player. Looks like the *ills are CHEATERS and their wins are all tainted. Kinda sad though because they were already trash!

    Patsnation haters gonna hate

  33. Dear Patriots Fans,

Nowhere does it say PEDs. It was synthetic weed. Synthetic weed does not = cheating.

  34. Kraft is outraged but he will do what is best for the Pats ( which in reality is make more money for himself)

Hey, if no one else needs facts for cheater comments, we don’t either. Get used to it.

  36. You know if they (NFL) keep suspending opposing players, the Dolts can just waltz their way back to the AFCCG…where it is more probable than not, they will choke…again…I would venture to guess that Irsay is at least generally aware of this scheme.

Sorry but there is no proof a ball at 12.5 psi or 12 psi is a “competitive advantage”

If that’s the case is A Rogers stupid? He likes his footballs at the high end. Does he not know if he has them at 12.5 they are softer and easier to grip?

What about all the other QBs that like them at the high end? They must all be dumb too. Someone should let them in on the secret.

Anyone with any common sense (and who can put there sports hatred aside) knows this was blown way out of proportion.

  40. Amazing how many PFT readers want their professional athletes to get on bended knee for authority figures who themselves lack integrity.

    Did Christ confess?

    Socrates?

    Mandela?

Confession is for losers, especially when it is dishonest to cop a plea.

  41. The lesson that Pats fans and Tom Brady could learn from this is that it is better to admit your mistake rather than trying to fight WWIII.

    Robert Kraft realizes this.

    Will Tom Brady?

  42. For you literary giants, jean valjean, was the hero of les miserables, not inspector javert.

  50. So much venom being spewed from the mouths of Men (and maybe Women) Dareus had ADMITTED his wrong doing to the league last season. He followed all the requirements the league asked of him, drug education and awareness classes, face to face with Goodell, etc. Point is, he cooperated with the NFL. I don’t hate Brady, or the Pats, nor their fans. I just want the Bills to beat the Patriots. GO BILLS!!!!!

If you think Rex Ryan is a great defensive mind, you are clueless. Check out how many big plays and failure to stop the other guys his defenses with the Jets had.

And — after you watch your Bills with Ryan as coach, you’ll learn to pray a lot.

  61. Please, he’s at it now. Rex is not the greatest mind in football dream on Buffalo fan. You may meet your match this season, because Rex did a terrible job at the Jets. All talk and no “do”.

  65. Synthetic Weed? What… An NFL Pro player can’t even afford the real herb? The synthetic stuff is meant for 14 year kids in the suburbs. Nonetheless, fun to see Bills and Patriots Fans fighting over their dysfunctional Teams. What goes around… Comes around!

    ———————-
Well, being the Son of God and without sin, he had nothing to confess. (and no, brady* is not in the same category)

    Socrates?
    ———————-
Well yes, although rightfully defending his educating of the next generation. He then maned up and drank the hemlock, while mocking his accusers by telling them, they may likely have sentenced him to a far greater state of being. ( again, not relative to brady*).

oh, by the way, bills 0-1.

  68. The problem for Darius is not the one game suspension, it’s that now he is “in the program” and will be tested for substance abuse up to ten times a month instead of once a year.

  69. And then there’s this:

“New England’s been doing stuff in the past and getting in trouble,” Revis said. “When stuff repeatedly happens, then that’s it. I don’t know what else to tell you. Stuff repeatedly happened through the years. You got SpyGate, you got this and that and everything else. Obviously in those situations in the past, they had the evidence. So they did what they needed to do.”

  70. It’s a minor transgression, and 1 game sounds right, but not so sure he should be allowed to play preseason friendlies??

And Pats fans this isn’t about your team, but will all you Pat-haters please stop saying “at least he owned up to it”! He didn’t – he got caught! “Owning up” to something is when you haven’t been caught but step forward and freely confess. You can’t “own up” after being caught, it’s too late. He did apologise, after being sanctioned, which is fine, but then what else woud you realistically expect him to say?

Hope he stays out of trouble and plays well the rest of the season.

  71. a) LOL at all the Pats whiners.

    b) You’re confusing the policy for Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs, HGH, etc.) with the policy for Substance Abuse (Drugs, Alcohol, etc.).

    CHEATER

  73. Link to where he used PEDs?

He smoked weed, shouldn’t that actually HURT your game?

The same people who defend Brady are probably the same “Bonds is innocent” people.

  74. For all you talking about PED’s , do a little research before you allow the stupid to come pouring out. Dareus got in trouble for synthetic marijuana, which is not cheating which is why Brady got more games. Also stop using the Ray rice defense, he didn’t get two games he’s suspended indefinitely

  75. Cheaters!!!! Should have been first and 4th draft picks, cash and four game suspension!! Where is the JUSTICE????

  76. only reason any Pat fan would talk down about the bills is because you are all Butt hurt over the realization that youre QB and entire organization is a bunch of phony’s. What other reason is there? you’ve beaten the bills over and over and over again…and now these types of comments over synthetic pot? lol awesome. #Week2

  77. Dareus dabbling in synthetic pot does not compare to hitting your wife in the face on camera…it is NOT a PED either lol …I think NFL players should be allowed to smoke pot…if it brings their performance down then cut him. if he relaxes w/ it in the offseason after a hard long season who cares. pot will be legal in 5-10 years anyways…taking PEDS and abusing your wife will not.

  78. “Guess what? Pats are still champs and no one can compare!!!!”

Steelers six Superbowl both compares and surpasses.

  79. still champs sure…but everyone but you sees the little * sitting up there by those trophy’s, your team has been on the cheat wagon for a decade now. if that’s what makes you proud then more power to you. Bradshaw and Roethlisberger aren’t anywhere near as sketchy as brady and the pats organization is.

  80. Lots of speculative comments here especially with the PEDs talk. But I know Marcelle personally. He grew up not far from where I live and he and my son are friends. They played sports against each other while in high school. For the most part Marcelle was a good kid and is a great person. He lost his mother unexpectedly his junior year at BAMA, got caught up with an unknown agent promoted event his senior year but was key in two National Championship under Nick Saban.

Last year he was stopped for speeding and then arrested for carrying a container that had residue of “Spice” in it. Does he need to wake up and get with the program in order to not futher damage his NFL career, most definitely. However he’s not the trouble maker some posters are trying to make him out to be.
