Bears release Ray McDonald

Holiday, schmoliday.

With the NFL taking a rare day off to celebrate Memorial Day, the Chicago Bears opted to transact some swift business in the immediate aftermath of the latest arrest of defensive lineman Ray McDonald.

The team has announced that McDonald has been released.

“We believe in second chances, but when we signed Ray we were very clear what our expectations were if he was to remain a Bear,” General Manager Ryan Pace said in team-issued release. “He was not able to meet the standard and the decision was made to release him.”

On one hand, McDonald is innocent until proven guilty, and it’s possible he didn’t do anything wrong. On the other hand, how many time can a guy be falsely accused before the question becomes why does he keep putting himself in the position to be accused falsely? With McDonald fully aware of the consequences of any misstep, he needed to do everything in his power to avoid any type of claim. He failed.

McDonald once again becomes a free agent, but it’s unlikely that anyone will take a chance on him unless and until he’s exonerated from the latest accusation of domestic violence and child endangerment. Even then, it’s possible that McDonald won’t get another second chance.

  1. What a moron.
    STUPID!!!!!

Oh come on, its his first time as a GM, I’d say that’s a little harsh – give him a chance…

  2. I enjoy PFT except when I am being lectured. I went to law school – decided not to practice because I thought I could do greater good. You chose not to practice so you could – and you do. Please stop with the legalese. We all know people are innocent until proven guilty.

Cowboys will happily give him a third chance.
    //////////////////////////////////////////////
    I was just thinking that..
The LONGEST YARD Team might become a reality! In Dallas…..

  4. Very happy to see quick, decisive action from Halas Hall on this. Whether McDonald is guilty or not is, in this case, immaterial. He was told in no uncertain terms at signing that he was essentially on double secret probation and that ANY more incidents of this nature would result in his dismissal. Conditions and consequences were clearly conveyed at the front end. The condition was violated, and now comes the consequence.

Not to mention, it is simply butt stupid to put your DC (Fangio), the club’s new GM and the CEO of the team in a position like this. At some point guys like this quit being victims of circumstance because they create the circumstances.

  5. Cowboys definately will take him. Hey maybe Mcdonald and Hardy can beat the crap out of each other? If not the women in dallas should take cover.

  6. He needs to stay away from that woman and have a third party as back and forth with that child. Give her child support and don’t even go near her.

  7. What an idiot. Should have never been around females given his history. Biggie size my fries from here on out

  8. Spending memorial day in the pokey is now officially off Ray’s bucket list.

  9. Everyone is saying how he would be a perfect fit for the Cowboys because they have a proven record of not caring even a little bit about character. And that was my first thought as well.

And while I think they would love to have them, I think the near-universal condemnation they took for bringing in Hardy will make them decide to not go through all that again.

Then, of course, their minds could be changed if Adrian Peterson becomes available for the right price. . . .

  10. As for the ex-fiancee / baby mama / whatever… if in fact she did fabricate all of this, she’s got even less going on upstairs than he does. His NFL career is OVAH and that means a radical adjustment to her child support payments – downward, and soon.

  11. Posting a comment saying the cowboys will sign him is just being a lazy internet troll. Use your brain and come up with something original.

  12. He’s an idiot BUT I’m pretty sure this time he really did get railroaded. There was probably no abuse at all.

But he’s still an idiot. I’m glad I never got some psycho dame preggie.

  13. So, there’s no sufficient evidence yet again, yet all you sheep are saying he’s guilty, and he was guilty the first time too? (When there was also no evidence). I mean, god forbid his ex is crazy! I know none of you guys ever had a crazy chick before huh!? Wow man.. all I can say, is that I hope that one day we can go back to being innocent until PROVEN guilty! You know, the way it’s supposed to be!? Accusations in this country, are AUTOMATIC guilt! So sad man..

Really? The Raiders? While the rest of the NFL’s teams deal with domestic abusers, murderers, drunk drivers, child abusers, rapist, sexual abusers, manslaughters, cheaters and every other type of criminal… the one team who has NOT been in the headlines for years?….. The Oakland Raiders.

They passed on players this free agency that they could have really used due to character concerns because they are trying to build something better in Oakland and here you come with this tired joke truly exposing how little attention you pay. If you haters demand we stop living in the past with regard to our trophies… than you need to stop living in the past regarding our old reputation. As much as people don’t want to admit… the Raiders have been probably thee classiest team in the NFL for years.

  15. No credit to the Bears for today’s decision to cut McDonald. They had no choice here. When they did have a choice (whether to sign or not sign) this loser, they blew it.

  16. STUPID MOVE.

What’s this talk about SECOND chances? Dude didn’t do anything wrong the first time.

From all early indications, he didn’t do anything wrong THIS time either. He’s got a crazy ex-girl running around trying to get him.

All these morons with their “He’s guilty of putting himself in bad situations.” What bad situations? You mean LIFE? Is he supposed to stay inside his house all day, ordering food deliveries?

  17. Michael Irvin wants to be his mentor when (not if) the Cowboys sign him. Can I get an Amen?!

  21. Ray can manage a McDonalds if football don’t work out. He’d be a lean mean grilling machine.

  22. Bears told him stay away from those types of situations.
With his history he should not have been at that apartment at 3AM

  23. That’s right, keep hating on Dallas. Guess what losers? Lombardi’s don’t expire. Love the fact that the Eagles have never and will never win anything relevant. EVER.

  24. It is more probable than not that Ray had some general knowledge that some domestic violence had occurred.

Please remit payment for my invoice total of $3,000,000.

    Signed,
    Ted Wells.

  25. The Bears have to feel like fools. This Ray McDonald is a punk. Happy trails to irrelevant former NFL player say hello to Ray Rice.

Let’s go over that again, for those of you who missed it the first time: “Should have never been around females given his history”.

So, this poster, seatownballers, wants this guy to never be around females again, given his history of being falsely accused and railroaded by the reactionary masses. And yet he has the nerve to go around calling others idiots.

No, cause if he did deflate balls + impede an investigation into cheating, he would only have been suspended 4 games instead of being cut outright.

  33. Great move by the Bears. My respect for the Bears organization has gone way up.

The Vikings could learn from this.

  34. WHAT !!! – No 3 month investigation ???

Well$ is NOT happy about this – NOT AT ALL.

  35. This Mr. Goodell is what you should be spending millions on. Finding a way to keep your players from beating up women and children and not footballs that are a little light. That was an easy fine without the Spanish inquisition needed. Instead you turned it into a expensive dog and pony show.

You again! Sitting there trolling for anything Patriot related. How sad and pathetic. Now in your spare time away from Mamma there in her basement take a moment to actually show proof that balls were indeed deflated because as I see in the famous Wells report their own company used to investigate was unable to prove any deflating had occurred. In fact if Wells had done what he did in every other instance and taken Andersons best recollection as to the gauge used there is no doubt that science easily proved it was the Ideal Gas Law that deflated any air pressure lost. Keep sipping the haters Kool-Aid. And for your own sake find a better hobby.

  39. Ray macdonald the PED hawks are on line 1. They feel you fit their team perfect and will get along with their top pick in this years draft another women beater. You will have to find a way to take roids that the league can’t test for though since that’s how pump em up Pete likes his teams and only way they win Super Bowl.

  40. Can someone please reveal the name of his agent? Then other potential clients in the NFL will know who wasn’t wise enough to sit Ray Mac down and explain to him how to deal with his ex without further jeopardizing his career. Or, he can defend himself and say he did explain it and Ray was just too dumb to follow his suggestions.

  41. Totally not his fault. Dude was set up. He thought the baby was a ventriloquist doll that looked at him funny and “said somthin’ bad”. Coulda happened to anyone.

  42. What’s interesting is that the national and Chicago media are absolutely crucifying the Bears front office over this, whereas the majority of Bears fans seem to see it for how it really is: a chance to get a decent player that’s familiar with the new scheme being put in place, but also being willing to walk away if conditions weren’t met. The Bears literally do not owe McDonald a penny, nor did they invest a draft pick in him. It was all upside if it worked out, and no risk if it didn’t.

Sure you can say this makes the Bears look bad… but so does putting the leagues’ worst defense on the field for the last two years. Pace & Co are exploring all avenues to fix a team that last year was bottom 5 in talent, coaching, and morale. Some of the things they try are going to work out, and some won’t. But at least they tried.

  43. Teams love these wife-beaters if there’s no tape and if they avoid jail. Apparently, the stuff that makes them good wife-beaters is the same thing that makes them good ball players. The teams can get them for a song, although they do miss a few games.

  44. I will absolutely throw away all my Dallas Cowboys t-shirts and caps if they sign this fool. I was not very happy about Greg Hardy but I can only take so much. You have been warned Jerry Jones!

  45. “stellarperformance says: Great move by the Bears. My respect for the Bears organization has gone way up. The Vikings could learn from this.”

Why don’t you take a break from your obsession over the Vikings. We all know you’d love to have AP replace that bust Lacy.

  46. Here comes the morons to claim the bears are stupid and “nothing ever happened” unless he’s concicted in a court room.

  47. Don’t we need to wait for Wells to write 243 pages of Goodell’s opinion of the matter?

Maybe it’s because you think it’s OK to have an abuser on your team – as long as it’s on the cheap. And you think getting out scored in a game is more embarrassing than having an abuser on your team – on the cheap.

    Priorities

  49. Just glad this happened in May and not August or September. McCaskey warned him he didn’t listen and he is gone before sunset.

Don’t see why the Bears are getting any flak from the media.

Oh because that’s all the media does, that’s how they make their money.

The guy didn’t even get issued his jerseys yet, who cares….no one will remember this guy was part of the Bears for 2 months in the dead of off season.

  50. What’s with all the righteous indignation? You all know this guy is an ignorant scumbag, right? How on earth can this be a surprise to anyone?
This is easily the most foreseeable event this year.

Spare me the crazy baby mama, not convicted crap.

There’s way to much smoke not to be a fire somewhere. I’ve been around long enough to know a stupid, useless human when I see one.

    Like Long said, good riddance.

  51. I don’t understand why people are so quick to applaud mob justice. McDonald may turn out to be guilty and that’s when you cut him, not before.

So now we are just destroying people over allegations, is that what we are doing in this country now?

Wait for the facts people. There’s plenty of time to punish later.

  52. Can we please stop with the Jerrah and Jerruh non sense. It’s stupid and it’s way overplayed.

    From a saints fan

  53. A big difference between the Vikings and the Bears actions? Spare me. This guy was signed by the Bears after no fewer than two prior domestic violence incidents — the Vikings didn’t draft or re-sign AP to his present contract after any prior crap other than speeding (albeit over 100 MPH). Fawn over the Bears all you want, but not over this one.

  54. Well…I’d guess it’s more probable than not that he did it.

He does need to turn his private cell over to the league.

  55. I will wait for the criminal prosecution to play out before I state categorically he should not be in the NFL. I also, agree with the sentiment that he should not be putting himself in the position he keeps finding himself. That being said, I fully agree with the move by the Bears. They really did not ban him from the NFL, they just no longer want him on their team. I can respect that.

  56. This is a prime example when you have a hood rat for a woman who has the hand book on abuse. Is this the same woman who once she he raped her? Was the same female who once pulled a gun on him? Is the same female who press charges on his x-teammate for rape? I don’t in any shape or form agree with a man putting his hands on a woman, but if this person for some reason continue to cry wolf, you have to wait until all the facts come out before you CRUCIFY the guy.

  57. It’s pretty clear those who say innocent until proven guilty are missing the overall point. How many times is guy going to put himself in bad situations? This is 4, DUI and 2 accusations in SF now 1 in CHI when he was told zero tolerance. Enjoy the legalese..but Chicago doesn’t Rowe it to him, and SF gave him multiple chances.

  58. Another guy offered the kind of life few ever get a chance at- playing a game they love for a living and earning millions of dollars doing it… and throwing it all away because he can’t keep his temper under control enough to not HIT A WOMAN HOLDING A CHILD.

    Bye, Ray.

  59. Note for all you guys that are willing to convict this guy: Are you even sure he was at the apartment? The police found him at a friend’s house. Let me get this straight: It is 3 AM and he is supposed to be at the apartment and she is holding the baby (at 3AM!) when he assaults her. She has already accused him once and he was exonerated.

Maybe he is a guilty scumbag…. Maybe not.

  60. That’s right, keep hating on Dallas. Guess what losers? Lombardi’s don’t expire. Love the fact that the Eagles have never and will never win anything relevant. EVER.

Thank you Dallas fan for reinforcing the stereotype that Cowboys supporters are heavy on self entitlement and low on NFL knowledge. Then again, with only one playoff win in the past decade, it’s not surprising you don’t have anything better to do. #BLEEDGREEN

  61. Damit Ray, I ordered a super size. You got it wrong last time too. And at least one or two before that.

  62. Watch Goodell not suspend this guy but just give him a league memo to not assault women..because you know the NFL is just soooo consistent in their player conduct enforcement..

  63. There are two options:
    1. McDonald has some mental issues
    2. Her ex-fiance wants him to fail miserably

#2 makes more sense to me

    ================

Problem there is Frank is still employed by an NFL team…it appears he was telling the truth. At the very least, he’s doing better than Ray-Ray…must be why Seattle picked him instead of picking up Ray…

  65. Batterer. They get away with it once sometimes twice, but statistically batterers think this behavior is acceptable. Rice, Hardy, Smith and countless others will do it again and again. You bloggers who blame the women are clueless or batterers yourselves. I for one am glad the NFL finally gets it with these violent offenders who hide under the entitlement they are given which allow them to blame everybody but themselves. Byby Ray. Next up Greg!

  66. There are only three reasons why a man would stay with the woman who accused him of assault in the first place, one is she is threatening him to stay and take care of her(file false police report)two is she is so good in bed he lost his mind, three is that he really does care for her and doesnt want to lose her.men really can be vulnerable to a womans charm and suffer the consequences.

  67. Come to New England, where the whole team is now criminals. According to every non-Patriots fan in the world.

  68. Say what you mean, mean what you say. Good job Bears. The “team” is better because of this, rest of the league hope you paid attention.
