Cam Newton says the kind of thing Cam Newton says sometimes

By all accounts, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton works hard, has played hurt and played well, helping his team to the first back-to-back playoff seasons in franchise history.

But sometimes when he talks, he makes it easy to misconstrue him.

During an interview with Morgan Fogarty of WCCB in Charlotte, Newton said another one of those things — like “entertainer and icon” — which will be latched onto by his critics as evidence of something he may not actually be.

When asked if he was still one of the league’s “greatest unknowns,” Newton started talking and the words just fell together in the following perhaps-unfortunate order.

“Absolutely not,” he said. “I say this with the most humility, but I don’t think nobody has ever been who I’m trying to be. Nobody has the size, nobody has the speed, nobody has the arm strength, nobody had the intangibles that I’ve had.

“I’m not saying I’m the one-on-one type of person that this league will never see again. No, I’m not saying that, hear me out. I’m just saying that so much of my talents have not been seen in one person.”

To be honest, he’s probably right. He has the mobility of a Russell Wilson, with the size and arm of a Ben Roethlisberger. But for all Newton’s grace — not everybody can wear white pants in the mud and save damsels in distress — sometimes he stumbles over his own words and ends up sounding more arrogant than he could possibly be.

And when he does, it makes him an easy target.

On the other hand, Newton can also sound incredibly gracious and self-aware.

For example, he said he still wears the hospital bracelet from last year’s car wreck, as a reminder of the temporal nature of his existence and the need to appreciate each moment.

And he was open about learning not to demand “instant gratification,” from his career, as he learns from his elders on the Panthers roster.

“So much of leadership is being a good follower as well,” Newton said. “And I look forward to hearing Thomas Davis speak. Watching how Ryan Kalil approaches the game. As well as Greg Olsen, [who] gets after it every day at practice.

“When I see those type of things each and every day, it makes me a better person [and say to myself] ‘Man, let me stop feeling sorry for myself and my nagging injuries and say you know what, I gotta do better. I gotta become that leader that I’m supposed to be.'”

Of course, that’s not as dramatic a sound bite, or as easy to use to pigeonhole him. Which is probably why you won’t hear it as often.

  1. Once again proving that he is dumber than a box of rocks and absolutely does NOT have what it takes to lead his team to a playoff win, much less a superbowl.

  2. I fail to see how anyone can discredit a guy for trying to be the best he can be.. Sometimes confidence comes across as arrogance, so be it.. I’m no Panther fan, but a man has to walk his own path. If he screws up, the world will let him know, in the end he only has to answer to himself..

  3. mymanmccoy: Do you even watch football or are you just a Cam Newton troll?

He was on the team last year and if I remember correctly, they won a playoff game. Just letting you know. I’m sure you could have figured that out.

  4. He mumbles so much, I can’t understand half of what he says anyway. In his yogurt commercial, he mangles the name of the yogurt so badly you almost need subtitles.

  5. Cam loves him some Cam, the person and the camera.
He is the exact opposite of humble, and a horrid example for the youth demographic that idolizes him.

  6. One playoff win against the Cardinals and their 5th string QB at home, something to be proud of Cam, he is his biggest fan. All the physical talent in the world but just doesn’t have it up stairs.

  7. Looks like grasping at straws. However, he’s wrong about the package never coming along before. I can think of both Dante Culpepper and Donnavon McNabb right off the top of my head, not to mention Andrew Luck who’s actually faster than him and a better passer.

  8. Goalposts just keep moving, huh? First he can’t get to the playoffs, then he can’t win playoff games, then, it was just the Cardinals with injuries, blah blah blah.

  9. Hes an idiot and a diva and I remember when he was practically in tears cause the Raiders hit him so many times he was about to cry.

  10. “sometimes he stumbles over his own words and ends up sounding more arrogant than he could possibly be.”

Grant it, it was a set up question referring to him as “unknown” which he certainly is not. Cam must learn to not take the bait from media. Whether he actually is that arrogant or not.

  11. “He has the mobility of a Russell Wilson, with the size and arm of a Ben Roethlisberger.”
    ===================================
    But not the stats.

  12. It’s like the thing a few years ago when Eli Manning was asked if he was elite. You guys in the media seem to want these QBs to say, “Nah, man, I’m basically a little bit below average. Some day I hope to work my way up to mediocre.”

I wouldn’t want a guy on my team who didn’t think he was one of the best, as long as he realizes he still has work to do, and it sounds like Cam certainly understands that.

  13. Some tough comments – look at the positives that Cam brings. He has that superman thing he does. Deon loves to say “Caaam.” He has a nice smile…

  14. And no one cheated their way through college like you. You are but another lunkhead impersonating and NFL QB.

  15. Just the other day, my friends were laughing at me for having built an elaborate shrine to Cam Newton.

    Look who’s laughing now.

Now onward, to continue plans for building that temple…

  16. I’m a Bucs fan and have no particular like or dislike for Cam, however I totally support anyone that doesn’t give generic boring answers to questions.

  17. Why isn’t Matt Ryan being criticized for throwing those 4 picks in the season finale against the panthers? Why aren’t people saying he can’t read defenses and so on?

  18. “Very disingenuous—has a fake smile, comes off as very scripted and has a selfish, me-first makeup.”

    Nolan Nawrocki, 2011

  19. So many Cam haters. Hard not to think its mostly because of his race. No off field incidents since entering the NFL, Cam is one of the good guys…wake up people

    ________________________________

Not to nitpick, but Cam is faster than Luck and weighs almost 20 pounds more.

Luck is a great passer for sure, but Cam is steadily improving. Remember, Luck has been in the same (pro-style) system for 7 years (including College).

Cam was a 1-read qb, and managed to will a National Championship in only 1 year as a starter in a major College program. Oh, did I mention he also won at the smaller school he played at, after UF.

    Dude’s a winner.

  21. I dont think hes that good. Or ever will be. Mabye some could argue its the lack of protection he gets ( because he did get popped alot last year), or its his lack of targets or talent..or mabye even the coaching staff..but when i see guys like Brady, or Rodgers, or Brees play..they had shown early on flashes of greatness. I mean, look Luck..guy doesnt have great weapons, terrible line, zero run game, and crappy defense, and he still lead his team to AFC champ. Cam had a brilliant defense two years ago and still could not get anywhere. In my opinion, panthers wont win one with him

  22. “Has the arm of roethlisberger?”

Really? That’s who you are using as an example of someone with “an arm?”

    Boy, have analogies changed…

  23. 115 TDs in four seasons, a pair of Pro Bowls, many franchise and NFL records broken, two division titles … But people STILL want to hate on Cam. It means you fall into one of four categories:

    A. You’re a racist.
    B. You’re a disgruntled Alabama fan.
    C. You’re fair-weather Panthers fan.
    D. You’re a moron who knows zero about football.

NOTE: This post is authored by a white Carolina Panthers fan whose college team he roots for is Alabama, but he still respects what Cam has brought to the table despite a lack of superior offensive talent surrounding him. This year will be a true breakout year for Cam.

  24. Cam tries to0 hard to say the right thing in a well crafted statement and trips over his words. That doesn’t make him a bad person.

  25. A QB who speaks in the third person is not a good thing imo. One time I heard him speak in the fourth person. His QB rating doesn’t support his statements and they won the division with a losing record.

I consider myself option E, objective. Cam is all about Cam and that has borne itself out on numerous occasions at the pro level. He’s got everything you could ask for in a QB sans one quality. Real humility.

  26. Someone tell Cam that the word humility doesn’t mean what he thinks it means lol He’s physically gifted, but too emotionally immature to be an effective leader. Things don’t go his way and he shuts down. Might as well call him the pout-master general lol

  27. What High School did he drop out of? Seems 1/2 the players in the nfl cant speak proper English. But hey, most graduate from college. Go figure. What a joke.

  28. Notice how he missed out on saying he has brains … the most important part in being an elite QB.

  29. He really doesn’t have mobility of Russell Wilson. He may be faster in a straight line, but no one has the combination of speed, acceleration, AND lateral agility at the QB position that makes Wilson so tough to get. He routinely leaves guys grasping at air. Not a knock on Cam, not at all. Their mobility is like apples and oranges, as Newton is more likely to go through someone rather than make them whiff.

  30. akboots : You probably should avoid commenting on speaking proper English if you yourself cannot type proper English .

  31. I didn’t like Cam when he was drafted. Thought he was going to be a bust. But he’s proven a lot of people wrong. Tbh, I think he catches a lot of undeserved grief. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with him believing in himself. Lets be honest, if Andrew Luck said this, people wouldn’t have a problem with it. Fwiw, I think Cam is every bit as talented as Luck, who has been pretty average outside of last season and plain awful in the playoffs.

  32. I don’t want to come across as the grammar and expect many thumbs down accordingly but when will some of these superstar athletes understand a double negative makes them sound like they are just a few pebbles smarter than a rock.

“I don’t think nobody has ever been who I’m trying to be” should not come out of the mouth of a high school senior let alone a college student.

  33. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with him believing in himself. Lets be honest, if Andrew Luck said this, people wouldn’t have a problem with it. ”
    ====================================
Luck doesn’t need to say stuff like that. He shows it on the field. That says it all.

  34. I like how everyone runs to comment on this article, but failed to comment on the article about Newton graduating from college and declining to walk so that he would not be a distraction to his fellow graduates…

    Ah, America…

  35. Notice how the writer gives Cam the benefit of the doubt. If RGIII said something like this fans and the media would go crazy.

  36. i dont mind the confidence he has, but you have to back it up on the field. The way he views himself is the biggest problem, he really believes he is great. I’ve seen so.e other qb’s names get mentioned on here as far as comparisons and I would lile to throw kaepernicks name put there too, he has all them tools also.

  37. Do any of you fine football fans have any idea who Cam was throwing to in the playoff game against the Seahawks in January. One receiver was from Wofford College and kept falling down when the ball was snapped. This kid is Randall Cunningham 2.0 and either with Panthers this year or with the Cowboys 2 years from now, he will be a Super Bowl Trophy.

  38. Every time the Panthers score Cam makes it to the football and gives it to a kid in the stands. There should be more of Cam Newtons in professional sports.

Time for people to look at what’s happening and think a little bit.

  39. I am so sick of the race card every time any black QB is questioned. Really, if you knock Cam, then instant racist? So people don’t knock Romo? Eli? Ben? Alex Smith? Dalton? Shoot, even Peyton is a “choker”, right? There are so many more it’s ridiculous. Come on people, this is sports, we are all passionate about our teams, and Cam hasn’t won enough to shut people up. Oh, and by the way, when it comes to skill-set, there once was a man called the “Ultimate Weapon”, look him up, youngsters. He was Cam long before Cam.

  40. Media when cam throws 2 intos vs the best defense in the nfl : ” he cant read a defense and basically throws cam under the bus and says he sucks.

Media when wilson throws 4 intos and andrew luck gets blown out by the patriots- media makes all excuses blaming the wide receivers and offensive line for their mistakes.

Wilson and luck can throw 10 interceptions and get no slack for it but when cam throws one they blame him and throw him under the bus.

Double standard. They want him to lose because they had that mindset before he ever played a down in the nfl

  41. harveyredman,

I wasn’t knocking him. Just pointing out that if he is talking about the league has never seen a QB with his skill set before, those 3 fit the bill since they all can/could run like the wind, are about the same size as him, and are/were good QBs.

Yeah, you HATERS are right, his STATS SUCK!!!

    (SARCASM FONT *ON*)

  43. My 65 year old mother could hit a 7 yard out with the same accuracy as “SUPERMAN.” Doubt she’d overthrow it as many times as cam.

  44. “Fwiw, I think Cam is every bit as talented as Luck, who has been pretty average outside of last season”
    ===================================
    QBR (out of 100):
    2012 – 54.7/14th
    2013 – 56.2/13th
    2014 – 56.9/16th
Now, that’s pretty average. And also stats for Cam Newton. During that time, Luck was 9th, 8th and 11th, respectively. Not great; but not average, either.

  45. Why is everybody so butt hurt? He clearly says “Nobody has ever been who I’m trying to be.” Key words, “trying to be”. He’s not proclaiming to be the best there ever was, but everyone should have the aspiration to be great at something. And he’s right about no previous or current QB’s having his combination of physical attributes as well. The number of haters tells me he’s doing something right, or there wouldn’t be all this bashing. LOL

  46. Media when wilson throws 4 intos and andrew luck gets blown out by the patriots- media makes all excuses blaming the wide receivers and offensive line for their mistakes.
    ==============================
That’s because when Luck/Wilson throw INTs, it usually IS some other position group’s (WRs/O-Line) fault… But when Can throws INTs, its usually HIS OWN fault….Jus saying
