Michael Sam: I’m just here to play football, not do anything historic

AP

Michael Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL, is now poised to become the first openly gay player in the CFL, as he has signed with the Montreal Alouettes. But Sam doesn’t want to be known as Canada’s gay football player.

Sam said today that he only wants to be known as a football player, and he’s eager to get on the field with his team.

“I’m just here to play football,” Sam said. “I’m not trying to do anything historic, I’m just trying to win some games.”

Sam acknowledged that his preferred choice would have been to make it in the NFL, but when he realized that wasn’t in the cards he started talking to Alouettes General Manager Jim Popp, and got excited about the possibility of playing in Canada.

“I decided to come to Canada when I figured I wasn’t going to be in an NFL camp. Montreal had my rights, we’ve been negotiating with Jim Popp, and now here I am,” Sam said.

Sam should be on the field in his first regular-season game in less than a month, as the Alouettes open the season at Ottawa on June 25.

  1. Brady should have hired him as his new ball boy, ESPN would be required by law to fawn all over it while Goodell had a death struggle with his own marketing team in the background.

  2. Can we now hear from the rest of the guys who couldn’t cut it in the NFL and have given the CFL a shot? No, really. What makes this dude special?

  3. It really irritates me when guys like Sam claim they’re just trying to compete on merit and nothing more (and don’t want to make waves) — AFTER having already publicly insisted that their inability to secure a roster spot was based on gender bias.

    You can’t play on Sundays. The eye in the sky doesn’t lie.

    And if you could for a really needy team, you basically blew it — when you launched into some kind of posture about how you claimed you were a victim of discrimination.

  4. He already is historic…..

    At no point in history has a football player ever received so much attention for doing so little.

  5. “I’m just here to play football.” Too bad Sam didn’t take that approach heading into the NFL draft last year. In reality, it was all about the “first openly gay player” last year, and everybody knows it.

    Whether intentional or not, Sam became to the NFL what Shannon Faulkner was to The Citadel; someone more interested in breaking “societal barriers” than in accomplishing the stated goal of his/her compatriots.

    I wish Sam well in the CFL, and I hope he plays enough football to improve and get another NFL shot, not in an effort to break some media constructed social barrier, but to contribute as an NFL player.

    Am I on Pro Canada Football Talk right now???
    _________________________________

    No – and this site isn’t “Pro American Football Talk.

    It’s ProFootballTalk. The CFL is pro football, last time I checked.

  7. Michael – let your play be your talk. Look at someone like Cam Wake who at first no one thought he could play in the NFL. He went up to Canada and proved he belonged. Do the same.

  8. He said all the right things. He tried to focus on football and the Alouettes and the quest for the Grey Cup. The Als have handled this very well. And look at what he’s going to, the team that may well be the favourites for the Grey Cup.

  9. “I’m just here to play football, I’m not trying to do anything historic.”

    Ladies and gentlemen, the mantra of the Minnesota Vikings.

  10. Michael Sam = darling of left-wing political correctness fanatics who want to force their social engineering down everyone else’s throat

    Tim Tebow = saint of right-wing religious zombies who want to force their antiquated religious beliefs down everyone else’s throat

    Basically 2 sides of the same coin and neither are legitimate NFL-caliber players. As such they should run against each other for elective office and stay out of NFL (or other sporting) news.

  11. “I’m just here to play football,” Sam said. “I’m not trying to do anything historic, I’m just trying to win some games.”

    If only that was your mentality when you were drafted by the Rams

  12. Michael Sam acts as if he should play professional football as a reward for being gay. I’m just glad that some folk don’t care if you are gay…but can you play?

  13. Well, that’s good. Because the chance to do “something historic” in the CFL is pretty much nil.

  14. It’s a perfect example of how everything is turned into a brand, marketing. I am sure he is sincere, but he is obviously way more about his idea of something that can make him money and fame, rather than being a first for openly gay players.

  15. He lacks a bit of the game speed needed for the NFL, but he has more courage than any of us will ever know.

    I hope he has a successful CFL career and brings his game to level needed to be a starter in the NFL.

    I wish casual football fans would stop pretending they know him because they’ve read a couple articles. All you need to know is that he is incredibly brave (though most will think being open about who he is was a money/fame decision… and I doubt those people will ever change).

    Welcome to Montreal, stepping stone for Jackie Robinson to the MLB.

  16. I hope Sam doesn’t have the impression that he’s going to be great in the CFL. His 5.1 second 40 time at the veteran combine means he isn’t fast enough to play in Canada either. Montreal signed a broken down Chad Johnson last year and he ended up with 150 yards receiving for the whole season.

  17. If the CFL doesn’t work out, then there is always the last resort: The Vikings.

  18. He is lying. Step one would be to stop giving interviews and avoid the media that just wants to talk about his sexual preference. He may want to play football but his highest priority seems to be either becoming famous or making a buck off the novelty of being an openly gay football aspiring media magnet.

  19. If Sam put as much effort into training and workouts as he does marketing he might have made the NFL. As a previous comment pointed out he’s slow and from what I’ve seen not that strong. Two things required in the NFL and cfl is strength and speed.

  20. Another SEC Defensive player of the yr selected in the first rd in this yrs draft. Yet, Michael Sam cannot get drafted nor is he able to latch on with one NFL team. Interesting.

  21. “I’m not trying to do anything historic…”

    Don’t worry, you won’t.

  22. At least he will get a chance to live in one of the most vibrant and culturally diverse cities in North America with incredible food and the best night life outside of Vegas rather than …. Cleveland? Detroit? Jacksonville? Buffalo? Oakland?

  23. I love how the good folks on here are so disgusted with this guys mouth for just being true to who he is. No he doesn’t need to announce anything anymore than any other self aggrandizing football player. But if he wants to live his life with a tiny bit of dignity and even privacy, he had to address the issue of him being gay. Its the reality of society, no matter how much you swear it isn’t a big deal, and that he sucks and should just shut his mouth. The day he and his partner or whatever are seen together would cause an immense scandal, even if he was just a practice squad player in the NFL, if he didn’t let the world know about it before hand.

  24. I’ve never seen this much attention for him and Timmy Teabag. The two biggest losers who have yet to make it in the NFL.
    At least Sam is the better man. Going into the CFL and letting go of the NFL while Teabag will again be cut from the NFL and show us again what a loser he really is.

  25. Johnny Football is still in the NFL and Michael Sam sacked him twice in the same preseason game. When Sam did the “money fingers” after the first sack, I cracked up.

    The knock on Sam was his size and that he wouldn’t be able to play the run – he’d be strictly a pass rush specialist. In Canada’s wide open game, his style of play should be a great fit.

    Some of you guys seem very upset about a story that you didn’t have to read. No one made you click the link. Me thinks thou protests too much. It’s as if you’re afraid of this guy.

    Tebow won games for Denver. Even won a playoff game in OT against the Steelers. He had success in the NFL until he got involved in the circus known as Rex Ryan & the Jets.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I was right there with you, up until the last paragraph. Sam may very well be an NFL caliber player. If so, he’s just going to have to go the Canadian route to prove it. He may be or he may not be; only time will tell.
    Tebow’s biggest problem is his ego. He may (or may not) be a great NFL tight end, or maybe a fullback, but his ego won’t allow him to even try. He wants to be “the man” or nothing.
  28. He should’ve kept his mouth shut until he proved himself in the NFL and then come out as gay. He tried the “first post” stunt and it came back to bite him.
  29. Michael is confused. He thought he could play football in the NFL; but his “handlers” didn’t care about him actually playing football, they had other plans for him and the NFL.
  30. I don’t think Canada needs anymore sweetness.
    They have maple syrup.
    I wish Sam all the luck in the world – I hope he is pounded into the frozen tundra and left there.
    Ohhhhhhh now it’s just about football. Kid did himself a serious disservice. He received bad advice.
    He think he may have now realized that after how quiet he’s been lately but you know, people with agendas love to find and use people like Michael Sam to spread them.
