Orlando Franklin: Philip Rivers is “more approachable” than Peyton Manning

A very strong will to win coupled with a wide range of facial expressions have earned Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers a certain reputation for being a bit of a jerk. He isn’t, and former Broncos tackle Orlando Franklin can attest to that.

Franklin, who joined the Chargers as a free agent after four with the Broncos, compared Rivers to Peyton Manning in a Wednesday interview with Paul Burmeister of NBCSN’s Pro Football Talk.

“[O]ne thing I noticed immediately when I got here is that Phillip Rivers is definitely more approachable than Peyton,” Franklin said. “I don’t know if it was because I was a lot younger being that I met Peyton in my second season and now meeting Phillip going into my fifth season but definitely I will say Phillip is more approachable than Peyton.”

It doesn’t make one guy a better leader than the other; they’re just different. Last year, receiver Emmanuel Sanders said Manning is a “far better leader” than Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.Franklin’s assessment lends credence to the idea that Manning, at this stage of his career, is more coach than player. And it therefore becomes a little harder for the players — especially younger ones — to connect right away with a guy who may at times seem to be more aligned with management than labor.

  1. maybe Rivers hasn’t had the privilege of seeing you whiff on a few blocks yet. Let’s see how approachable he will be when your man threatens to shorten his career after one of your hmmmm blocks

  2. A lot of people know Peyton is an a-hole. Not many have the guts to say it in public though.

  3. Say what you want about Brady – he has 4 titles. Manning has 1. Rivers has 0. Eli has 2 fluke titles.

Not a Giants fan but Eli has 2 titles because he took Brady down twice. Must have cheated better than Tom on those days

  5. Brady is a one of the best quarterback of all time. But Eli manning Super Bowl rings are not a fluke. Both teams had 60 minutes to see who was the best and the gains came out on top. They both had the chance to prove who is best on the field. Both times Brady and their offense chocked. The defense did ok, I blame their offense for not scoring enough points.

  6. Peyton manning every knew you were gonna choke this past playoff game like you do every playoff game ( losing record in the playoffs). It’s easy to bump up your stats in the regular season. But in the playoffs when it really counts Peyton is guaranteed to choke. I’m calling it now, he might get his stats but come playoff time Peyton will play like the bum he is.

  7. Orlando would get starstruck. Rivers isn’t the superstar Manning is. He was distracted, because he would embarrassingly not want to have to ask for Peyton’s autograph.

  8. I am Pats fan. Fake titles? C’mon, the Giants defense ate up NE’s offense. Eli may not have outplayed Brady by much, but he sure did make the throws when he had to.

Getting back to this article, I think Rivers isn’t as big of a jerk as people make him out to be. Denver fans mostly hate him because he was jerk to Cutler, and Denver fans hate Cutler now too anyways. Manning strikes me as one of those guys who is so good at his football skill because of the time he spends practicing, that he’s kind of awkward. Probably makes it hard for people to approach him.

  9. Rivers gets a bad rap.

Plays with passion, expresses his displeasure sometimes. So what, we all do that.

If players ran around like robots, we would all complain.

That’s nice Orlando…Now you and Philis can both approach 2nd place in the AFC west…if your lucky

This from a fan of a team which is currently redefining what choking in the playoffs is all about. Right. That noise you hear is your window slamming shut.

    And it’s ‘you’re’, not ‘your’.

  11. P Rivers is the biggest D bag in the HISTORY of the NFL!!
Never trust anybody who doesn’t like Philip Rivers.

  12. The new goal of the d-bag and whining Pats fans is to spam every single PFT article complaining about how the big bad NFL is out to get them or that Goodell “hates” Brady. Seriously, let it go. You are the most classless whiners in all of sports.

  13. There is some really dumb fans out there .
To say rivers is anything but a good guy is to be completely stupid !
If you knew him (which you dont) you would know he cares about his teamates his opponents and anybody he comes across .
He mentors young men takes great pride in his children
He and tiffany help with children that dont have parents .
He doesnt cuss at all And he doesnt bad mouth anyone .
He cheers when people boo him and all he said to cutler (who was the one calling him inapropriate names was “look at the scoreboard”
So dog him all you want just shows how ignorant you choose to be .

  14. Manning seems like he’d be one of those people that’s too busy to approach.

but Orlando Franklin could be a bit more low key about cohesion matters.

  15. I love how when Manning’s name come up, haters get a hard on. Just can’t wait to post your choking comments, get your orgasm. That’s OK, continue giving us all the attention, y’all are the reason we’re the most popular team on the net.

  16. Can’t believe there is actually a ‘story’ about this. Desperate.
Mugsy Bogues was more approachable than Michael Jordan. Whoopdi-damn-do. What’s the point?

  17. Not a surprise. While Peyton Manning has cultivated a fantastic image in the media as the NFL’s golden boy, it is pretty well known that he can be a very selfish and obsessive prick to the guys who have played with him over the years.
Rich Gannon tells the story of when he and Manning made the AFC Pro Bowl team in Hawaii, Peyton insisted on taking every snap at practice. Both made the team but Peyton saw it as an opportunity to piss off a high ranking competitor (Gannon). The nice guy we see on the TV ads is just an image.

  18. Philip Rivers, one of the greatest competitor in the NFL, one of the best QBs in the NFL, and one who gets a bad rap with no reason. Unlike Jay Cutler, Philip Rivers is a true leader. I bet 25 teams in the NLF would love to have him under center. Never trust anybody who doesn’t like Philip Rivers!

  19. LOL at “why we’re the most popular team on the net.” What?
    I mean, huh?
    Priceless stuff there.

“Ya’ll are the reason we’re the most popular team on the net”. Well if that’s what you’ll are aiming for…. lol

  21. Gotta love those Raider fans posting about Peyton… Didn’t he hang 88 points on your team last year? Oh yeah but he’s a bum, right?

  22. Coming from a Ravens fan, I think Phillip Rivers is a top five QB. With that being said, I think the Broncos fall off and the division is there for the taking. Good luck in the playoffs. I think the Chargers will be a team to reckon with. My Ravens will be there. Ozzie nailed another draft and FA. I wouldn’t trade Joe Flacco for anybody. Even though I think Rodgers is the best QB in the league. Ravens – Packers SB. Mark my words.
