Browns’ offense appears to be moving on from Manziel

AP

Josh McCown is firmly entrenched as the starting quarterback in Cleveland, to the extent that Johnny Manziel, a first-round pick of the Browns last year, appears to be largely an afterthought at Organized Team Activities.

After reporting on the first week of OTAs, Tony Grossi of ESPN Cleveland describes Manziel as “a fish out of water” in the offense the Browns are installing. Grossi writes that the Browns don’t seem to be developing Manziel so much as they’re moving on from him.

At the practice the media were allowed to watch, Manziel seemed to eager to run and not confident enough in his passing. And Grossi reports that one source who witnessed another practice says Manziel was actually even worse in a session that the media didn’t see.

The bottom line is that 13 months after he was drafted, Manziel still hasn’t done anything to make the Browns think he’s ever going to be their franchise quarterback. McCown is the starter for now, and someone else will probably need to be found to be the long-term answer in the future.

  1. I know people love to hate manziel but the guy only played 1 full game in the nfl… they gotta give him 1 more shot and if he fails again move on.

  2. These idiots had a once in a lifetime chance to steal a young, successful, AFC-North prototype named Nick Foles from the Eagles, but instead they deliberately opt to spin their tires with McCown, knowing full-well Manziel isn’t the answer.

These crackheads are too busy putting on new uniform fashion shows, modifying the hue of the helmet 1%, and figuring out a way screw fans over harder by moving team activities to Columbus to actually focus on installing a legit NFL offense with legit NFL players.

Is it bad when your fans know your plans aren’t going to work out before you do?

  3. Good for Johnny on getting clean and sober. Hope he stays clean but in regards to football; even the average Joe knew he was not an NFL QB. He probably made Cleveland a bunch of money in merchandise sales but other than that, I just don’t see him as having a long career in the NFL, especially as a QB.

  4. Browns have had 3 drafts with 2 first rounds picks in recent memory and they’ve picked 3 QBS with the extra picks. All 3 are a complete joke.

  5. Just think, they could’ve had Beckham Jr and Carr, but instead they have Manziel and Gilbert. Typical Cleveland.

  6. Maybe now he can move on to his REAL calling in life; being Johnny SpoiledSonOfTexasOilBaron. Then Johnny LobbyistForHisTexasOilBaronFathersCompany. Then Johnny GovernorOfTexas.

  7. Exhibit 1, 2, 3 and 4 why if you are the least bit promising 1st rd QB, you emphatically state before the draft that, “I will not go to Cleveland, Washington, Jets or Bucs.” Too many hundreds of millions on the line for your career to die after 2 quarters like the Browns gave him.

Granted….it appears Manziel blows but did Cleve even give him a snowball’s chance?

Too much money on the line….these 1st rd QBs need to start pulling an Eli.

  8. As we all suspected (except the Browns), he’s the “b” word.

Hint: it’s 4 letters and describes almost all of Clevlands previous drafted QBs.

  9. Cleveland…….where quarterbacks go to die before they even have a chance in the NFL……..

Great job on getting sober…..Now Get The Hell Out Of Cleveland!!!

  10. I’m so happy the Vikings passed on this guy and got Teddy 10 picks later. Well done, Rick.

  11. Gimme a break – who exactly is this definitive source who knows what the Browns plans are? And who are the people posting in this thread who take this nonsense as gospel?

It’s May for cryin’ out loud. How about we wait and see what happens over the next year or so before we conclude that the Browns have moved on.

    “Told you so”

    -Everybody.
    ————————————————–

Except the media, who sold the Brownies on him.

  13. 2nd day of OTA and these guys have already come to this conclusion lol….either the writer is lying or the sources need to relax…..lets not forget he is in his 2nd yr learning a brand new offense and spent the off season in rehab give the kid a chance and if it is true the Browns are fools for giving up on a first round draft pick so quickly, even RG3 will get 4 yrs before he is dumped…..

  14. Teddy Brigewater ~

“[He’s] becoming more of a leader, and you can tell that this is more of his team as we continue to go,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said. “He’s a lot more vocal with the guys, as far as telling them where to go and what routes they should be running. He obviously has a better command of the offense, as well.”

    🙂

  15. With the kind of money involved here you’d think the Browns/nfl/manziel’s would’ve come up with a football related recovery program.

  16. If this is actually true… Wow. What a terrible waste of a 1st round draft pick. They should have just stayed put and drafted Sammy Watkins (but as a Bills fan, I’m sure glad they didn’t!).

I guess that’s what you get when your owner buys into a whole bunch of hype from the press instead of listening to your scouts and the $100,000 QB study they had done…

  17. So…stating the obvious. “Josh McCown & Firmly Entrenched” are not words that go together in the NFL

    Tom Brady, Russell Wilson…yes.

Josh is 2 bad pre-season games and/or one bad regular season away from the bench. An NFL coach is not going to stake his job on handing JM anything!

  18. Franchises that waste first rounders like this make me feel better about the Pats nkt having a 1st round pick next year.

  19. They are willingly going with Josh McCowan as the starter. That also highlights just how stupid the Browns are as an organization. As if that disaster on the Bucs wasn’t enough concrete evidence that this now 36 year old guy was only a half season fluke. The Browns are such trash. Johnny Football may not be an NFL Quarterback, but the Browns may not be an NFL team.

  20. Hate to say I told ya so, (not really), but I told u so. Browns are clueless. They have no clue how to draft, then these geniuses wonder why they blow every year.

But in typical Browns fan fashion every off season they are going to the Super Bowl and all their draft picks are going to be perennial Pro Bowlers.

    ——————-
You can find that same blather from nearly every coach in the league at this time of year.

  22. It’s so weird that Kevin Costner movie made them look like such geniuses…… what happened?

  23. I don’t know why people were so excited about this guy in the first place. It was pretty obvious that he didn’t have the skill set to succeed against NFL quality defenses. (I said the same thing about him before he was drafted)

I doubt he’ll get calls from the CFL. He can’t throw! That’s a pass-first league with wider sidelines and deeper end zones.

If Sanchez went to the CFL, he’d be the next Doug Flutie!

  24. Yawn. Been saying this since day one. He played a half-length college career in a system that was basically sandlot football with real helmets, uniforms, and a stadium. He’s like a kid off the street who is athletic and competitive, but he’s clueless about the mental aspects and mechanics of NFL football.

Told ya, told ya, told ya. Considering how thick the people are who seem to blindly support this guy on past accomplishments that mean zero in the NFL, it feels especially good to be right 🙂

  26. Manziel – H just may be a bigger bust than Ryan Leaf.

How could Johnny have known that his trademark “dollar bill” hand gesture he did WAY too many times in college (and also at the draft) would be more of a symbol of his vegas bathroom trips versus getting paid as an NFL QB,

Well done, Johnny Bench. And well done, Cleveland.

RG3 was Rookie of the Year and was a fantasy God for that one year. Please do not put Manziel in his class. Now they are both rehabbing, but from totally different things.
nny’s chances died when he was run down by the Panthers Star Lotulelei, DT. His fate was sealed when Luke Kuechly ran him down and nailed the coffin shut.

Stop all the nonsense that he didn’t have a fair chance. Maybe he can audition for a part in the next Ocean’s 12 or Entourage. I suggested the CFL, but apparently, he’s too good for that.

  28. Somebody needs to dust off that old Taco Bill Pic Of The Day with all the FA QB’s in a dumpster and just add in the Browns last 3 QB draft picks.

  29. There’s a team or two and a coach or two who would know how to get the most out of Manziel. None are in Cleveland. He would be a good backup in Philly or Seattle.

Worst organization in all of sports

    ***************

The Sacramento Kings take exception to that remark.

  31. Tony Grossi is an angry bitter burned-out hack. He’s also about as plugged in to the Browns franchise as my 5 y/o son. If Grossi is ” reporting” it take it w/a HUGE grain of salt.

  32. As Adrian Peterson would say, ” it’s not right that a player can make millions for sucking with the possibility of being cut. He should have guaranteed money forever.”

  33. There’s no denying they have made horrible mistakes in the draft. But let’s give them some credit for this year. Moving on from the mistake of Manziel is a good choice. I was sure in the draft this year that they would give up both of their draft picks to choose yet another QB, but they didn’t. They made some solid choices for a change. It will take time to overcome their mistakes but they are on the right track.

  34. Yeah Damn Cleveland IF you just would have taken Sammy at four or Beckham and then Carr or Garropolo or Teddy .. done thats it for maybe 10 years possibly. Right? or am I missing something here?

Still not sure how you move on from someone you never were into anyway.

    108 5

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

What? I’m not a Browns fan or a Johnny fan but how can you say they were never into him?

NFL teams do NOT choose someone freely in the first round and give them the guaranteed money that comes with that if they are not into them.

Now, many teams do select guys in say the 6th and 7th round or as a free agent that they are not into…

But they don’t select guys in the FIRST round who they are NOT into…

Now, I’m not defending the selection of him but NFL organizations don’t take flyers on guys in the first round…

FIRST round picks are guys they WANT… They are into their first round picks… or they wouldn’t select them with their first round pick…

According to you, they were NEVER into him yet they decided to select him anyway with their first round pick and not choose someone they wanted… they decided to just waste the pick and the many millions that come guaranteed to first round picks.

Not even the Browns select someone in the first round they don’t want and were never into…

Yeah, they were wrong big time… but they were still into him to select him.

    How could you say otherwise?

  36. It’s the coaching, and team, more than him. Dallas should make a trade for a 5th or 6th round pick and let him learn behind Romo.

  37. Shelton is gonna be the next Browns 1st round bust. Saw a highlight of him on ESPN yesterday and wow is he slow.

Vince Wilfork is a DL too and i dont ever recall him looking slow. His moves are quick. This guy Shelton is big but looks like hes a polar bear walking.

  38. Skip bayless:

“Merrill hoge, you have never been more wrong with your comments. Johnny will be a star in this league. I spoke to his qb coach and he laughed on the phone saying skip, he’s going to be a star”

    Hahahaha

  39. Not going to bash him, he’s a young guy that’s been having fun the past few years. Not everyone has what it takes but he made memories for himself and others in college that he will never forget.

He’s not going to be a pro for long or hall of famer but most of us knew that and no reason to pile on. He’s a kid. We all were too at one point, just not as outspoken.

  40. “Entitled brat. MONEY!!!”

Why, he is who he is?

The Brown’s perhaps should have known better if they weren’t willing to change to a system that fits him. The signs were there.

  41. If I’m Chip Kelly, I get rid of The Sanchize and “The $50M ‘Guaranteed’ Man” (Sam Bradford, before ever putting on an NFL Jersey — well, excluding the one given to him at Draft Day lol) and I take Johnny Manziel, Timmy Tebow and for some “flavah” bring in VY10 (still 3-0 versus Eli[te] Manning/G-Men) and start putting together the pieces for a Super Bowl win that Donovan McNabb/Andy Reid/Marty Mornhinweg fell just an FG short of.

  42. What an embarrassment. Nice job Jimmy and Ray. When will we here your admission of utterly absurd team control?

  43. Cleveland once again proving if you want to have a NFL career you DO NOT go to the Browns. Manziel may never be a good QB, but to move on from a player after 1 game of football is such a Cleveland move. It’s like dumping Hoyer for McCown. The Browns will end up fishing for a QB every year and then dumping him if he ever shows signs of struggling and then wondering why they suckl

  44. JJ in addition to that new title you just gave McClay… give him a car and a nice house!

@wallabear- Oh I DO hope Chippy listens to you… and so does every fan of any OTHER NFC East team!

For any Cowboys fan who’s SUGGESTING a trade for him… he’s too fragile too be a RB and Tebow still hasn’t figured out that he SHOULD BE!

  45. The best QB in that draft was Derek Carr…..Oakland has a franchise QB and Cleveland has a joke
The guy was a gimmick in college and his 15 mins are over

  46. McClown isn’t durable though, he’ll last about 3-4 games and then he’ll be out for the rest of the season. Then again, little johnny isn’t that great either.

On the other hand, I hope he has his life together after his rehab stint. All the money in the world doesn’t help if you can’t keep the demons at bay.

  49. If you draft a spread offense QB like Johnny, you should commit to modifying your offense to his strengths. It makes no sense that they drafted him to use him in a pro offense. Poor decision by the GM/owner/homeless guy…whoever is in charge.

The good teams modify their offense to what they have. New England has drastically changed its style like 5 times based on personel.

Bad teams try to take players out of their comfort zone in poor fitting roles…like Manziel in a pro style, Dion Jordan in a 4-3, RGIII in grudens offense, mike Wallace with a QB who can’t throw deep, Geno smith in a pro set, etc…

  51. Manziel is a prime example of why the rookie wage scale needed to be in place !

Imagine if they’d paid the guy 40 or 50 mil guaranteed ?

  52. John McCown turns 36 on July 4th and had a 1-10 record as a starter in Tampa last year.

If Josh McCown beats you out of a job, perhaps you should seek a different career.

  53. Can you say BUST in the Mistake By The Lake? Manziel implosion and being cut or a trade is just over the horizon. This could be the biggest QB bust since Ryan Leaf and JaMarcus Russell.

  54. McCown is a huge regression over Hoyer. They should have kept Hoyer and drafted Kelvin Benjamin. It is what it is from an owner he belongs in jail, but paid his way out.

  55. Just another ESPN hyped crappy SEC player. If they’d watch another conference, they might actually know talent when they see it. Russel Wilson was far superior to Manziel, but they don’t cover the ACC.

  56. He’ll be an excellent “Guy Everyone Hates” on ESPN in the near future.

  57. “This could be the biggest QB bust since Ryan Leaf and JaMarcus Russell.”

Jags traded a first and second round pick to draft Gabbert.

  58. Anyone who writes of Manziel is not very smart. He is young, talented, and motivated. When he gets his chance, ie McCown sucking, he will move the chains and make big plays. He is a roll out deep ball qb and you pair that with a run up the middle and play action. He can be a good qb and he will get his chance this year. Stay strong Johnny. I am only 29 But I am 9 months sober and my life is so much better I cant state it. Its hard every day, but as long as you have someone who you can lean on, and I mean seriously lean on, you can do it too man. You can prove all these jerks wrong and be the man you know you are before things went bad. You can get it back. I know you can, and I believe in you. – Keith

  59. ” now he can move on to his REAL calling in life; being Johnny SpoiledSonOfTexasOilBaron. Then Johnny LobbyistForHisTexasOilBaronFathersCompany. Then Johnny GovernorOfTexas.”

At similar points in their lives he’s accomplished a heck of a lot more than Dubya, wouldn’t rule out a run at the presidency. Why not the drunken drug addict QB for prez we already had the drunken drug addict cheer leader.

  60. I personally don’t think Manziel will ever be a successful NFL QB, due to his size and style of play, but he may surprise us, and I see no reason to be in a huge hurry to write him off. In the first place, it’s May. The Browns are installing a new offense, and Manziel is getting his first taste of it; isn’t it a little early to render final judgment on his ability to perform in that offense? And the same goes for his career. He’s entering his second season. He’s 22 years old. He’s played in, what, 2-3 games? Do we really need to rush to judgment this quickly on the kid? Calm down, people. Let’s see how he looks after another year or two in the league. How many quarterbacks are lighting up the league at age 22 anyway?

  61. His career consisted of exposing those overrated SEC defenses.

Now that there’s a playoff in college football, that SEC nonsense will fade into history.

  62. Guessing most people know nothing about Grossi. The guy is a waste. More worried about creating drama than reporting facts. That’s why he was fired from the Plain Dealer.

Literally, no one else who covers the team has this view and it is opposite of all comments from players, including Joe Thomas who has never been shy to criticize Manziel but now is taking about his improvements.

But hey… I’m sure 2 days in OTAs has shown the full offense to a reporter…

  63. The fact of the matter is that the Cleveland Browns don’t have and have never had an environment that is good for a qb. The only successful quarterback to play in Cleveland was Otto Graham. That was long ago. Especially since they have come back in the league they jump ship as soon as a qb has a bad game and that’s why any decent qb who has had any semblance of success elsewhere jumps ship as soon as possible. If they would put the time and effort into molding a qb they would have a decent starter by now. seriously when the best quarterback in your history was something around 56-13 and the second best was 55-53 the environment is the problem not the quarterbacks. I refuse to believe that the Browns have had “bad luck” since they’ve been in the league.

  64. I’ve got news for Cleveland: We know what to expect with McCown starting. It might as well be the Bears or the Bucs.

Manziel was a 1st round pick. Start him. Redefine your offense. If he fails at least the Browns tried.

Thinking about it more … in the real world scenario the GM did exactly what the owner ordered him do and drafted the kid who was a bust.

That movie is really awful, but I watch it over and over again on cable. It’s no where near as brilliant/awful as the original Red Dawn, but I think those two would make a good double feature.

  66. Developmental QB. Personal problems (which he has overcome) 2 offenses in 2 years.

The Browns have in McCown a serviceable vet that can buy them some time without having Manziel under the spot light.

Maybe he makes it, maybe he doesn’t but the key is that he doesn’t have to do it this year.

Instead of moving on, maybe they are helping him as he just leaves rehab.

  68. I’m not a fan of Manziel or any Aggie for that matter, but it is somewhat early to write him off. His guaranteed money means he should have a roster spot for at least another season or two unless he totally implodes off of the field. If he is truly preparing as his teammates report anything is possible when training camp starts. Not probable, but possible. I mean, we are talking about Josh McCown here.

  69. Maybe because he’s throwing to the worst position group in the NFL.. And Ooh gooood for the Browns for not tailoring their offence around their QB of the future. Enjoy your 4 to 6 wins Browns fans. Worst run team in league.

  87. the only thing the browns are good at are wastinng no. 1 picks. they also suck and round 2 round 3 . the three stooges are alive and well in cleveland haslam, farmer, pettine

  88. I’m grateful every day that my Vikings chose Teddy Bridgewater over Manziel in last year’s draft. Teddy’s on his way to becoming a star, and Manziel’s probably going to be out of the league sometime soon.

  89. 32 teams in the NFL and only Cleveland showed any real interest in him. His draft stock fell fast. Manziel is fast becoming a footnote in football history. I am glad he has sobered up. I hope he stays that way.

  90. All these comparions to the bust, Ryan Leaf, are totally unfair…….to Ryan Leaf.

At least Leaf came into his rookie season as a starter and proceeded to win about 5 games in a row. What has Johnny done but start one game, loss it by a wide margin and then enter rehab?

  91. Way too many people reading too much into two OTAs. Way too much.

mrboots, the reason the Browns traded up for him was they knew Philly was about to draft the kid. Historical fact.

And all these people touting Bridgewater, remember that Bridgewater played in a pro system in college. So he was able to adjust more easily. Add to that the competition sucked in Minnesota. The competition was not that great in Cleveland either, but Hoyer is far better than the QBs Bridgewater had to compete against.

I still say that Manziel has the tools needed to be an elite NFL quarterback. He just needs a little more time and a little patience from the Browns organization.

  92. Know Your Source.

Grossi’s like a jilted ex-girlfriend. He takes subjective observations and draws his own negative conclusions. This is pure speculation to get readers and you all are seeming to fall for it. It’s a mere days into OTA’s. McCown knows Flips offense where as Manziel is seeing it for the first time. Duh! I’m not a Manziel fan but I’d put money down that Manziel starts at some point in the year. The Browns’ front office is not planning a future around a 30 something never was no matter how nice of a guy he is.

  93. They have a far better Q than McCown sitting on a three year “peanuts” contract. Connor Shaw is the type of competitor that may not impress you on first blink but he manages to “getter done”.

  94. They should’ve never drafted him in the first place. As for everyone writing him off, I still think he can be a good nfl qb if he can learn some discipline (on and off the field)…Browns are just toxic for ANY QB they put on the field

  95. In Hindsight, it turns out Cleveland was a bad fit for Johnny.
