Plaxico Burress avoids jail on tax evasion charges

Steve Martin’s “I forgot” defense apparently works.

Former NFL receiver Plaxico Burress won’t be going to prison for failing to pay income taxes. Via TMZ, Burress avoided incarceration by simply paying the money he allegedly didn’t pay to the State of New Jersey in 2013.

Burress claimed he made a “simple mistake,” not by forgetting to pay (so the Steve Martin thing was a bit of a stretch) but by trying to pay via bad electronic check. He owed nearly $48,000.

Indicted last month, Burress faced up to a decade in prison. Seven years ago, Burress served almost two years after shooting himself in the leg with a gun in New York City. Which is far different from, and yet eerily similar to, performing with an arrow through the head while performing live from New York on Saturday night.

  1. Plaxico may have avoided jail, but the league will not be able to avoid the Kansas City Chiefs.
Andy Reid has assembled a dynasty team that will dominate the league over the next decade.

    Top 8 defense
The road to multiple Super Bowl titles in the near future must go through Arrowhead “loudest in the world” Stadium and the intimidating force of the Chiefs Nation.

  2. Darn it Florio!! I think politically you and i are polar opposites. People like you make me SMH all day long in everyday life. I really don’t understand how you come up with some of your over regulatory, “i want big government to have a law for everything” junk.

but then you make a old Steve Martin reference and reel me back in. you do make these otherwise useless stories kinda fun.

You are more accommodating of blatant one sided rhetoric than I could be. If the writer brought the macho man back his blatant style has forever lost me.

Kansas City beat the super bowl champs last year. Congratulations. Too bad there is no trophy for that.

Kansas City humiliated them, and abused them.
That was the one game the Patriots couldn’t cheat in, and you saw what happened.

  6. I kind of wish he did get jail time for this and got the full ten years so he’d have got longer for not paying some taxes than Sharper did for raping multiple women. Great justice system!

  7. How is Plaxico Burress getting in trouble for 2013 tax evasion when Al Sharpton has been evading taxes much longer and for MUCH more money?

  8. @Iknowitall: Kansas City humiliated them, and abused them. That was the one game the Patriots couldn’t cheat in, and you saw what happened.

Blatantly untrue. There is absolutely no evidence that the Pats did not cheat in that game.

Anyone writing either of these sentences (especially when they’re both totally out of context) could be called a tool and a loser.

And “teams” is plural; the possessive form is “team’s.”

  10. Richard Pryor tried that defense when he had his own tax problems. He told the judge; “But your honor, I forgot.”

The judge told him; “You’ll remember next year, won’t you.”

  11. I love how you just delete certain people’s comments for absolutely no reason. It would be nice if you had some sort of stated policy on what is and isn’t acceptable so it wouldn’t just be left to the judgement of biased d bags

Congrats Chiefs, you won October. Too bad this isn’t baseball. Well-coached teams who learn from their mistakes get better as the season wears on, not worse. That’s why, once again, the legendary Patriots were crowned champions.

Only losers and also-rans bring up games they won in October. Join the club. Too bad we won’t see you in the playoffs just like last year–you would have gotten smoked when it counted.
