After incident at golf tournament, agent says fan harassed Manziel

Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was involved in some type of incident at a golf tournament on Saturday, although reports conflict about the details.

Manziel’s agent, Erik Burkhardt, told Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com that Manziel was harassed by a fan at the Byron Nelson Classic on Saturday. According to Burkhardt, Manziel handled it appropriately by going to security, and that’s why photos have surfaced showing Manziel talking to police officers.

But Colin Cowherd of ESPN wrote on Twitter, “Expect a Johnny Manziel story from Byron Nelson tourney over next day or two.” Cowherd provided no details, but his tweet seems to be suggesting that there may be more to it than what Manziel’s agent offered.

TMZ reports that there was indeed more to it: According to TMZ, Manziel “got into a fight with a buddy” and threw a water bottle at his friend. Manziel missed, prompting the friend to sarcastically scream, “Nice throw, Johnny.” A source told TMZ that Manziel responded to that by charging at his friend, although someone else in the group held him back.

There’s quite a difference between the agent’s account and the TMZ account. Manziel hasn’t had anything to say about it yet.

  1. Bridgewater may be a disappointment on the field but Manziel is a disappointment in life.

  2. Are you kidding me? Ive never been spoken to by police in other than for a speeding ticket in my life and I’m over 30. Its amazing how for some people its a common occurrence. He should be literally sitting in a house doing nothing but studying a playbook, working out, and watching film for the entire summer. What doesn’t he get about that?

  3. Please tell me the TMZ version isn’t true. If it is, Manziel has a LOT of growing up to do, which would explain why the Browns aren’t counting on him at all this year.

  4. Ask yourself what has a better probability of happening?

    1) Manziel becoming a real NFL QB

    or

    2) Manziel completely imploding at some night club, bar or other social setting resulting in Manziel’s arrest?

Someone inside the Cleveland organization needs to be held accountable for wasting a first round pick on this guy.

  5. I find it amusing. You shamelessly promote yourself, offer no substance and lame style, and fail to deliver, you deserve ridicule. Period.
I thought life’s rules were clear on this. Maybe the getting mad about it is bonus content.

  6. (Patches OHoulihan voice) If you can throw a bottle, you can throw a ball…. Damnit Johnny.

  7. Frendship over? Strength in friends will help Johnny in the long run. An entourage friend or a real lifetime buddy. He made millions just because. He doesn’t need daddy’s money yet. I think he becomes a solid backup and special play QB. Who knows he may become a starter. He size still is an issue and Hurd his speed isn’t what it was.

  8. He will be out of the NFL after the 2015 season- for good. Off to the CFL and rehab again in 2016. What a spoiled flame out he became.

Are Packer fans so threatened by Teddy B. that they have to stalk every story with an insult?

  10. Jesus people. Lay off this guy already. I feel ashamed to be a human when so many wish for the demise others for little to no reason. #youshouldfeelproud

Teddy B. will be a star. Did great last season with a team missing AD and many linemen. You are a genius….

  12. I never liked JM. But reading how he stayed so long in rehab (a good thing), and that he’s committed in practice now, I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I’m going to wait for more info to come out on this incident before passing judgment, but damn, you just can’t keep screwing up and expect to succeed.

  13. If it wasn’t for the rookie wage scale this guy would rate above Ryan Leaf as the greatest bust in NFL history.

He’s also a prime example of why the rookie wage scale was needed. Imagine if the Browns or some other team had paid him 30 mil+ guaranteed and had no recourse to get any of it back ?

  14. This basically sounds like a complete non-story. Almost feel sorry that he is under such an incredible microscope by the media. Every move is talked about about and scrutinized. smh

Move along now. Nothing to see about this so-called “incident” at the Byron Nelson.

  15. Best off-season EVER.

    Good times.

  16. I’m gonna guess he was never disciplined as a child, thereby resulting in a twenty-something-year-old who doesn’t know how to discipline himself.

  17. The guy better be ready to be cut by the Browns when they get down to 53.

    Writing is on the wall.

  18. Typical for Manziel to be doing something other than doing whatever possible to secure a roster spot. If you can’t secure a roster spot as a back-up or 3rd sting QB in Cleveland, you won’t be able to do that anywhere. What do you expect when you show up at a venue that puts you in contact with the public? You should know better by now, but it is unequivocally obvious you are not a fast learner.

Manziel was a bust from day one. He is not anywhere close to being mentally strong, which is what it requires to be in the pros. Manziel had a desirable skill set in college, but he isn’t on the same level as Tebow, and Tebow very likely won’t even be a second string QB.

You reap what you sow, Johnny Bench.

  19. Until some facts come out this is a non-story only useful for tabloids, gossipers, and people with nothing better to do.

  20. By the way,

Manziel has harassed Cleveland fans (and NFL fans in general) to the tune of $6.7 million guaranteed for 4 years.

  21. “Someone inside the Cleveland organization needs to be held accountable for wasting a first round pick on this guy.”

Oh, they are. That first round pick is going to set them back years.

  22. Yawn, really? If you are knowledgeable about the game you knew he couldn’t play.

  23. t will be an afterthought in a week. Johnny will an afterthought before the season begins. A “fish out of water” rarely survives.

  24. I love how the few of Johnny’s Jockriders who are left want to pretend like this is a non-story.this is very much a story. It is yet more proof, in what seems to be a never ending stream of it, that this guy is not mature, not ready to be an NFL player, and never will be.

As much as people will call TMZ a tabloid, the bottom line is that there are almost always write with their stories. On the other hand, it’s usually the athletes agent that’s putting some kind of BS spin on a situation to make the player look better. So I know who I believe in this case.

and for those who think Johnny’s destination is the CFL? Sorry… the CFL is still a professional sports league. Manziel is not going to succeed anywhere that calls for discipline and professionalism.however, it has been proven time and time again that even the most brain dead athlete can provide color commentary for sportscasts. Look for Johnny’s college football color analyst debut within the next couple years.

  25. The tmz report sounds awfully specific and if not alcohol fueled it’s at least the actions of a dry drunk.

Looks like the therapy didn’t take.

  26. Apparently, the Busto Kid can’t stay out of trouble. The Browns should cut him and chalk it up to a huge mistake — one they should have never made in the first place.
It isn’t bad enough that he’s been nothing but trouble since day one, he has no chance to ever be a good QB in the NFL.
The Browns are an inept organization and they’ll just never learn.

The difference is that if you go out drinking with your buddies on your day off, no one cares. If you get into a heated augment with your friend no one cares. If you get a speeding ticket no one cares except your insurance company.

But for someone like Manziel how was drafted high and expected to be the face of an NFL franchise.. people care.

  28. Like we are really going to believe the agent’s version.
Like Cowherd says, people tell you who they are ALL THE TIME.
Manziel’s a coddled frat boy out of his league in the NFL.
Browns are always in desperation mode when it comes to QBS, so they rolled the dice on this goofball.
The results have been pretty predictable, on and off the field.
The offseason will always be too long for this yahoo to stay out of trouble.

Well, pervyspankspackfans, you’re not a genius but you sure are delusional. What has Teddy Bridgewater done in the NFL yet that would lead you to say that “Teddy B. will be a star”??
Your comment about Bridgewater smacks of desperation from a fan of a franchise that has yet to win a Super Bowl championship.

  30. He looks drunk in the TMZ picture. There’s a chair set up in a flower patch? The cops got him a chair, because he was too drunk to stand up and talk to them.

  31. Gotta love that white-knuckled “sobriety”.

Johnny…Johnny… it’s the bottle, Johnny. Remember me? You know I’m the only one who loves you, Johnny. Come back to me Johnny, and everything will be alright again. Remember the good times we had together? No? Trust me, it was awesome! Come back home to me Johnny, and you can be the best again…

  32. That’s hilarious!! Can’t wait till he’s out of the NFL.. Was he ever actually in it? Lol

  33. Johnny…Johnny…Johnny can you hear me? It’s me Johnny. It’s your football career. I’m here Johnny, I’m here in Cleveland…come to me Johnny, come to me. I’m not at a golf course in Dallas Johnny, I’m not at the bottom of a Cuervo bottle Johnny, I’m not in a club…I’m in Cleveland Johnny…Let’s go Johnny, I’m ready to play Johnny. Oh Johnny, we could have had fun Johnny, we could have been somebody. Don’t go with her Johnny, come to me, I am the life you want Johnny…

  34. I didn’t believe the TMZ version until they mentioned a missed throw. That validated it.

  35. Well, could stay home and study plays, etc. But life could get really boring. He needs to surround himself with good people and alternated when he goes out to help him out in cases like this. Seems trouble follows wherever he goes and whatever he does. Don’t know what the answer is but he needs to get it together or he will be out of the NFL. It’s not like 31 teams would be chasing for his services.

  36. Come on, PFT. you missed your chance to run the photo where the cop has Johnny in a chair with his six pack of Bud Light in the foreground. You can tell they tried to set it out of the way, but at least one photographer was on the ball. LOL, dude was probably getting smashed at noon.

  37. Raise your hand if you can remember the last time you were enjoying watching a golf tournament and you got so mad at your friend that you threw a full water bottle at him….while sober.

Yes, I do believe there’s more to this story.

Would be best QB in vikings camp………………………………………………….thats hilarious bridgewater is far and above ol Johnny rehab sincerely a die hard steeler fan

  39. That story aside, I think he needs to be traded to some place he could get some sort of chance. Or cut. I dont know why the Browns hang on to him at this point.

Jerry Jones wanted to draft him but they rightfully went with Zack Martin. Now Manziel could be had for next to nothing and work himself up while Romo plays his last years.

  40. “As much as people will call TMZ a tabloid, the bottom line is that there are almost always write with their stories.”

I can’t stand the Browns or Manziel. However, you are the exact demographic that keeps money in the pockets of lowlifes who foist the “journalism” of tmz onto the Public. Common decent and common sense are dead in this country.

  41. Browns coaches and management are shaking their heads in disappointment today, while Josh McCown is smiling into his gatorade.

  42. Johnny may have missed with his throw, but unlike another recent QB bust – it was within 10 yards of the intended target, so that’s something. . . .

  43. Manziel shouldn’t have time to play golf. He got drafted to a team and was a huge disappointment for them. He should have his head in the books or on a field throwing footballs.

  44. If someone was harassing me the whole time at the event, id throw more than a water bottle. It’s sad how the media always blows things out of proportion

  45. rubbing his fingers together was not a $ gesture he is trying to get a booger off from that big snozola of his

  46. With a bottle of water selling for 6$ at the golf matches he did that fan a favor.

Eagles are collecting QB’s they could maybe get a 2 for 1 deal trade.

  47. i dont put much stock in ANYTHING ESPN related (ColinC) but if true, this is friggin classic. That scrub McCowan has the job locked up for sure, bwahahahaha!!! Gonna regret not lockin up Hoyer. How sad is that??

  48. If it wasn’t for the rookie wage scale this guy would rate above Ryan Leaf as the greatest bust in NFL history.

He’s also a prime example of why the rookie wage scale was needed. Imagine if the Browns or some other team had paid him 30 mil+ guaranteed and had no recourse to get any of it back ?

for the love of God, seriously???? 22nd pick vs number 2… not even close in regards to bust and I do not think at that rate he would be getting 30 mill guaranteed… or are we assuming that in your dumping on him that he was drafted higher… perhaps you should stick to reality…is he a flame out and bust? yes… biggest bust in history? not likely

  49. Not everybody loves a showoff football player like Johnny Football who so far is more hype than a super star quarterback in the National Football League.

  50. Meh. News? Not really. Just more of the same about the guy, who the media built up.

The guy has no arm, footwork nor the ability to see and anticipate. All this was on display at College Station and against the ‘vaunted’ SEC defenses.

  51. Hey he got treated for booze issues doesn’t mean they treated his personality traits or rants. I heard a rumor Cleveland has moved on from Jonny boy.

  52. This guy is trying SO hard to change his public image. It ain’t working!! I’m not fooled, and you shouldn’t be either.

  53. Ha, You just know at every away game and most home games for the rest of his career someone will be holding up a “Nice Throw Johnny” sign.

  54. As a die hard raiders fan who dreaded the thought of drafting this idiot, thank the heavens for derek carr. Absolute leader and role model for the youngsters.

  55. This is what agents/lawyers do. They lie lie and lie some more for their clients. The TMZ story is actually more believable since they’ve proven to get the real truth out.

    *********************************
    Really dude? I mean, really?
    A) What in the He** does this story have to do with Bridgewater in the friggin SLIGHTEST?

    B) HOW Exactly was he a “disappointment” on the field?

He played decently for a rookie, and exceptionally well down the stretch.

Can you dimwits just GET OFF harping on the Vikings? It is SOOOO Damn OLD!

  57. Johnny threw a water bottle at the heckler. Good news is, as per his past achievements, Johnny missed his “receiver”

  58. This guy is a magnet for trouble and is an NFL bust. What else did you expect his agent (mouthpiece) to say??? I reckon he thinks he is ” Johnny Angel”

  59. Well, this oughta finish off Mr John Football for good. If it is true that Manziel threw a water bottle at a heckler at a golf tourney, stick a fork in him he is DONE.

In Aug of 1999 Ryan Leaf got into a shouting contest with a heckler and had to be restrained. In his rookie year, Leaf’s obscenity-laced locker room tirade against a reporter was captured on videotape. This was the end of Ryan Leaf. That and the fact that he was the biggest bust in NFL history.

When are these prima donnas going to learn?? You cannot be a superstar (potential in JF’s case) and do stuff like this. It is a career killer.

  60. Johnny is no good, but I wouldn’t rank him anywhere near the top of the all time bust list.

It’s not like he was a top five, or even top ten, pick.

He was picked 22nd overall, and he was the Browns’ second pick of the first round. They took a flier on him. It’s not going to pan out.

  61. What is he doing at the Byron Nelson? I used to live in Dallas and went to this “party” I mean golf tournament. Half of the people attending didn’t make it on the course they would hang out in these giant tents getting wasted all day. It’s reputation for very hot woman made this the premier event in Dallas every year. It was a great place to party and try to hook-up probably the real reason Johnny “no-time-for-football” showed up. This would be the last place a guy recovering from so many issues should be at.

  62. Entitled spoiled brat; will be a footnote in NFL history within 2 years just like another spoiled brat in Colt Brennan and somewhat like Matt Leinart. All forgotten about….nobodies.

You wanted the spotlight JF; guess what, you got it! Not everyone can be like Bradshaw and Theismann and actually pull it off.

  63. I usually subscribe to the theory that there are 3 sides to every story: Side A, Side B, and the truth. In this case there are 4 sides.

Side 1) Cowherd, who is terrible and can’t be believed on almost anything.

Side 2) Manziel’s agent, who makes his living as a spin doctor.

Side 3) TMZ, which sensationalizes everything to death and excels at making mountains out of molehills.

    Side 4) The actual truth.
