Sean Payton: I think there’s a fit here for Jermaine Gresham

AP

Tight end Jermaine Gresham visited with the Saints on Wednesday and it sounds like he could be in line for a longer stay in New Orleans.

Gresham’s been out of the spotlight for the last couple of months while recovering from surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back, but Saints coach Sean Payton said Thursday that the team has had him on the radar for a while.

“He’s a player we were obviously well aware of coming out of Oklahoma five years ago,” Payton said, via the New Orleans Advocate. “He’s recovering from an offseason surgery, and I thought the visit went pretty good. It would be about the fit. I think there’s a fit for us if it works out, and he’s a guy that we’ve studied quite a bit now in the last couple of months.”

If Gresham agrees about the fit, it may wind up eating into Benjamin Watson’s role in the offense. The team has talked up Josh Hill quite a bit this offseason as a receiving option at tight end since trading Jimmy Graham, which would leave an in-line role for Gresham that Watson is currently slated to fill in New Orleans.

  1. This reminded me of Ben Watson’s response to Ferguson. Google it – it still has impact today.

  2. Jermaine Gresham is going to cause a lot of heartburn for NFC South linebackers who try to cover him. I bet he’ll miss playing in a Flintstones football uniform, though.

  3. You trade Graham to end up with Gresham…
    ===========================
Yep trade an overpriced, 1 dimensional, product of Drew Brees TE for a more well rounded one that cost 1/3 the price and we don’t have to take him out on run downs…..Sounds like a winner !!!

  4. The Saints didn’t trade Jimmy Graham to replace him with Jermaine Gresham. It’s because they are overpaying Drew Brees! Had he agreed to restructure his contract, Graham and others, including Darren Sproles could still be there.

Unfortunately, HUGE QB contracts will create across-the-board parity because as soon as a team wins and gets better, they’ll have to lose people on defense and offense to keep one player happy: The QB!

Carolina’s gonna fall back to earth after overpaying Cam Newton and the Seattle Seahawks should prepare for a crash landing and lose some key players on defense in order to keep Russell Wilson.

This business of overpaying the QB while the other 54 or so players scrap for the crumbs is for the birds! Even the clipboard holder makes more than a lot of starters which is crazy!

  5. Had he agreed to restructure his contract, Graham and others, including Darren Sproles could still be there.

Mickey Loomis is already on record saying they didn’t ask Drew to restructure and the reason we got rid of Sproles is the same reason he disappeared for the Eagles toward the end of last year….too small and old to last 16 games without a slip in production……….. As for Jimmy, he couldn’t block and we didn’t want to continue to pay a TE $10,000,000.00 a year to take him out on run downs…………TRUTH

  6. ….also, Drew is on record saying that he would gladly restructure if asked to do so……FACTS

  7. Good guy who tries hard and got unfairly trashed by a fan base oh so eager to excuse Andy Dalton time after time again. Wish him luck. At least he has a real QB throwing to him now

Sure, go ahead and talk smack about Graham now that he’s gone when you loved him to pieces before. Gresham is coming off back surgery and commits the dumbest penalties at the most inopportune times. But hey, he would be 1/3 the cost right? Sounds like a winner!!!

  9. Um, no…too many drops, too many injuries. All you thin skinned Aints fans trying to make this sound like the answer to all the offensive issues are gonna be disappointed.

    Sorry.

  10. I don’t think anyone can question his effort or his desire to block, but sometimes his mental focus is way off. He drops the ball in key situations and alligator arms it in others.

  11. I hope you like 1st and 15. Also, at more than one point you’ll say “ohh, nice catch Jermaine! get down, just go down, just … nooooooooo!”

  12. If he can stay healthy, which is a big if, he can be a decent player. Will probably look better catching accurate well placed passes from Drew Brees

  13. The herniated disk surgery is a concern but not a deal killer if he is healthy enough to ball. It sounds to me from reports he faired well on his visit., Gresham is a former #1 pick and 2 time pro bowler that actually has a higher catch percentage than Jimmy Graham over the last 5 years. Jimmy had future Hall of fame QB Drew Brees. Gresham will be a better TE just because Bress is his QB. Brees makes TE’s great. #Gates, #Shockey, #Graham soon to be Hill/Gresham

Um, we had the Number 1 ranked offense in the entire league last year LOL…look it up!

  15. Buyer beware with Jermaine. The guy can be a beast when
he wants too. Problem is, you never know when that’s
    going to be.

If I remember correctly, he was cleared to play in the
playoff game against the Colts. Even went out on the
field with the rest of the team during warm ups.
Then the game starts and he says he can’t go.

Quite a few stupid penalties at thee worst time as well.
You can expect false starts, holding, total lapses of
concentration when the pressure is on. Fumbles too.
I don’t think he fumbled his entire time at Oklahoma
but he’s had quite a few the last year or two.

With that said, if he’s healthy and has his head on
    straight, he’s a good TE.

  16. LOL at Offensive issues comment. The Saints have been at the top tier of the NFL on offense since Payton has coached them. Thats why they are addressing the defense more than offense this offseason. If Gresham is hired he will be a piece of the puzzle not the answer and the Saints won a Super Bowl before Jimmy Graham even started. Its about balance for them which is also why they traded Graham to get Uger at center and a #1 draft pick that landed us a great LB asset.

  17. bgrab1. Yeah I don’t get the comments about the Saints offense either. Unger is a good Center plus the extra first round pick. I think Stephone Anthony went just a touch
high but it was definitely a need for the Saints defense.

Of course, every year someone goes in the 1st round you wouldn’t think would go in the 1st and every year someone
you’d think would go in the 1st round drops to the 2nd round. It is what it is.

Kind of surprised me the Saints didn’t draft a TE though.
Ben Watson is no spring chicken at 34. Admittedly I
don’t know who else they have at TE.

  18. Josh Hill is a solid TE and explosive play maker, check him out. He isn’t the red zone target Jimmy was but he is far more of an all around consistent TE than Jimmy was. He will turn heads this year but they do need to get depth at that position since Graham is no longer with the team. hence the interest in Gresham with the newly freed up cap space from the contract extension of Cameron Jordon. They will get a TE but Gresham was just the first to visit. He could be the guy or they may more visits scheduled.

  19. I’m still trying to figure out how the offense was so good in the six years Brees was here prior to “soft jimmy”. We were and still are a top five offense since Brees and Payton have been here, with or without jimmy. All you so called experts forget about that? That’s what I thought.

  20. You fools are acting like Gresham will be the starter…or even 2nd string.

    Watch more football.

  21. I love Graham, and I will always pull for him until he plays the Saints. But if you’d have offered me Gresham, Unger and Anthony for him I’d have pulled a hammy running so fast to sign the deal.

  22. As a Bengals fan, this dude makes me nervous every time he touches the ball. Catches fine, but dude can’t hold onto the ball. Fumble prone. Let him walk.

  23. “I think there’s a fit here for Jermaine Gresham”

So, he has a spot for a head case with hands of stone and a propensity for committing penalties at the worse possible moment in a game?

  24. ( I know no one cares) The biggest loss will be for Jimmy Graham’s fantasy owners.
It’s not humanly possible for him to improve, or even maintain his numbers with a guy that throws the ball 10 times a game.

  25. sb44champs,I don’t know if you are male or female, young, old….but I swear,I’ll read a comment, think of a reply, and you have said like exactly, word for word what I would have. I do know one thing about you,you are a TRUDAT.You are a true football fan, with real knowledge of the game. Like me,you REALLY love the game, but our boys always come first. Well I guess that’s a couple things. Anyway, I just figured since you kept taking my words out of my mouth,Id leave a comment just saying, whatever sb44champs says #REALTRUDATS!
