Recent reports out of San Diego have indicated that the Chargers and defensive end Corey Liuget were closing in on an extension and they were proven right on Tuesday afternoon.

The Chargers announced that Liuget has signed a multi-year extension with the team. There’s no word about how many years the deal runs or how much money Liuget stands to make, although the five-year extension worth up to $60 million signed by fellow 2011 first-rounder Cameron Jordan in New Orleans could provide a hint about the neighborhood.

“I want to thank the Spanos family, [General Manager] Tom Telesco and all my coaches for helping to make this extension possible,” Liuget said in a statement released by the team. “This is a dream come true. The Chargers are the only team I’ve ever wanted to play for since they drafted me and my number-one goal now as it has always been is just to continue to prepare and play at a high level to show them how much I appreciate their confidence in me.”

Liuget, the 18th overall pick of the 2011 draft, has started every game for the Chargers over the last three seasons and has compiled 169 tackles, 18 sacks and five forced fumbles for the Chargers.

UPDATE 4:48 p.m. ET: Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego reports that it is a five-year deal worth that can be worth “a little more than $50 million” if Liuget plays it out in its entirety.
