Panthers getting unexpected extra work out of Shaq Thompson

It might only be two days, but the Panthers will take an unexpected bit of good news.

According to Bill Voth of Black and Blue Review, Panthers first-rounder Shaq Thompson is scheduled to be back in Charlotte in time to catch the last two days of OTAs this week, after they previously thought he wouldn’t report until Friday. He’s flying in tonight, and barring travel difficulties, he’ll be on the field tomorrow.

He’s been unable to make it since he’s one of the unlucky quarter-system players who are annually inconvenienced by an archaic rule, but the Panthers have kept him up to speed as well as they can.

“I know [linebackers coach Al Holcolmb] has been sending him the stuff on the iPad and they conference call. Whatever they’re allowed to do. They’ll go through those things in installation,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “Shaq will call him at all hours of the day asking questions. The thing Shaq has to remember is when it’s 9 there; it’s midnight here.”

While it might only be two days, the Panthers will need the time, as Thompson’s converting from college hybrid safety-running back to full-time linebacker, so the installation is important.

  1. This was a very high risk pick. Some of my fellow Panthers fans disagree and that’s OK. It’s my point of view that a 1st round pick needs to play a major role his first year to make an impact.

Shaq was a very good college guy, who played the role of a Swiss Army knife for Washington. He has to learn a position now at the NFL level because he was not defined in college.

You might even see him as a defensive Johnny Manziel. He’s a guy who made big plays from multiple spots, almost from a disruptive, improvisational stand point. Now, he can’t just be a special teams guy, as some suggest. He has to be a starter to pay off.

Getting AJ Klein off the field won’t be hard, but playing up to the level set by Luke and Thomas Davis, wil be a tall order.

  2. Panthers fans could you please explain to me what your franchise is doing? You’re thin at DE now, have virtually no secondary or offensive tackles, and just gave Cam Newton a huge deal. What do you have planned to keep up the success?
You’re better pray these players workout because one you pay luke, you won’t have much to work with to address all of these holes.

  3. When I asked the Lb coach from another NFL team what he thought of Shaq Thompson, he said, “the one guy I wanted in the draft. The smartest guy on the field.”

    I’ll take that….

  4. Hhmm…. Seems like the same time last year, folks were saying the same things about Anthony Barr in Minnesota.

Well that seemed to work out pretty well now didn’t it?

  5. I don’t believe you have to have a major first year impact to be a first round pick. Thomas Davis didn’t, Aaron Rodgers didn’t, would you not want either of those players on your team?

wjmmoffat will you please explain what you’re smoking? All this franchise has done is won their division two years in a row, had a top 10 defense in 2014 …that got stronger as the season progressed. Thin at DE? I guess you only read headlines because we didn’t have Hardy last year either (-1 game) and somehow we persevered. We went into last year with Byron Bell and Nate Chandler as our OT’s fer chrissakes so Panther Fans know we improved. Our secondary gave young players PT and became the best secondary in the playoffs. We paid Cam what he deserved and have the cap space finally to take care of both Luke and TD for long term also. The moves we made in the offseason won’t make headlines but OL depth, Tillman, and yet another great draft means anything less than the Super Bowl is disappointing.

We don’t have as many holes as “repeat what the last writer said” writers claim. Oher was a top LT before playing on a bad big toe. The toe is fixed now. Kony Ealy progressed as DE, and Frank Alexander is back from suspension (so far). Josh Norman is a top 5 CB, despite lack of acknowledgement from these sports sites. Benwikere is a solid nickel back. As renocarolina said… once the youngsters got on the field, the secondary got REALLY good. Add Shaq Thompson to what was already the best LB duo in the league… Holes WHERE?
