Report: Patriots park Malcolm Butler for three weeks for missing a flight

Getty Images

Malcolm Butler’s learning in a hurry that last year’s results don’t matter to Bill Belichick this year.

According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, the Patriots suspended the Super Bowl savior for three weeks of practice because he missed his flight and was late to the first OTA on May 18. Butler apparently reached out to the team to let them know about his canceled flight, but he didn’t find a sympathetic ear.

That seems harsh, but Belichick has sent players home because they were late during blizzards before, so it’s not like Butler didn’t know who he was working for.

The cornerback has been around the facility working out and going to meetings, but he hasn’t been allowed on the practice field. That’s expected to change later this week and for next week’s mandatory minicamp.

The Patriots were in flux at cornerback anyway after Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner left, so it’s not like they couldn’t use the help. He’ll be competing for a spot with Logan Ryan and Bradley Fletcher for the starting jobs, assuming he’s there on time.

  1. I’ve never understood Bill Belichick’s ways …, but they seem to be getting him the results he wants.

  2. I knew something was up with this guy if thats the truth. He made the play of the season last year , but last year is last year and BB will be the first to tell you…he dont care who you are…….

Really? How is that? Because he benched a guy who missed his flight? Don’t you get that this is how he gets so much out of guys: he expects so much

  5. Bill is insane. Sometimes I think, and I know it’s crazy, that he diminishes his own roster to increase the challenge.

  6. No other coach could get away with this. Belichick is a legend and because of his stature his players don’t question him. They won’t change the name of the Lombardi Trophy, but Belichick will end up with more Super Bowls wins then any coach in NFL history. By far.

  7. Belichick would bench Batman after saving Gotham if he was one second late.

  8. Unfortunately for the Seahawks and their fans this suspension came about 4 months too late.

  9. It’s all about bringing him back down to earth after a off season that brought him from no body to the hero in one play.

  10. So did the weather cause a cancelled/delayed flight?

Or did he miss a flight because the weather caused traffic(excuse)?

  11. Everyone in Foxboro lives in fear of Bill Belichick. When anyone screws up re missing a flight or late to practice or a car accident, etc – Bill seems to relish the opportunity to impose his over the top discipline. Part of the Patriot Way is the culture of consequence for errors.

  16. Belichick breaking the rules again. This time punishing a kid for missing an OPTIONAL practice (that he actually tried to make!). This team will never learn.

  17. This could be a blessing in disguise for Butler. I know the kid said all the right things during the offseason, about not letting fame get to his head, but this benching is pretty much a lock that it won’t happen. He’ll have to scrap and earn everything all over again, which is how he got there in the first place.

  18. I’m all for discipline, but if these are the facts, it’s both unfair and over the top. I know, I know…”life isn’t fair.” Agreed. But treat people harshly like that when the outcome isn’t in their control, and they won’t be loyal for long. I’m thinking there is more to the story.

  19. Did he miss it or was it cancelled? Two different things, how about a little clarity

    Kinda like deflategate

  21. Bill uses things like this as a teachable moment for average and slightly above average players. It’s how he gets the most of out of those willing to give him everything. Otherwise they are gone.

Case in point: Jonas Gray runs for 200+ yards/4TD performance on MNF, then misses a practice. Benched. Pretty much for the remainder of the season.

Bill’s point: If you are about you, then you’re gone. It’s all about team here.

  22. This story needs some editing. Either Butler missed his flight, or his flight was cancelled.

If his flight was cancelled and Belichick his ‘benching’ him because of that, then Belichick is, well, the south end of a defecating north bound moose.

If Butler missed his flight, then Belichick’s move makes sense.

    So PFT, which is it?

So where are all the disloyal Patriots? You are hard pressed to find a current or ex Patriots who isn’t intensely loyal. And part of why they remain loyal is BB has no sacred cows. Everyone has to earn their time on the field every season, every game, every practice and every OTA

    aren’t these OPTIONAL?

Yes. Just as the Head Coach has the OPTION of deciding who does or does not get to practice with the team during OTAs, mini-camp, training camp and the regular season.

The greatest NFL Head Coach of all-time, Bill Belichick, is not the only Head Coach who decides who practices with the team on any given practice day.

  28. And people wonder why the pats never fumble. It’s because belichick puts the fear of God into his players. The colts and thier fans think it’s from the .2 less psi pressure in the footballs, lol.

  29. This is turning into one of the worst offseasons we’ve had in many years. We’ve lost too many starters already with little in the way of replacements. 2 of our best suspended for at least the 1st few weeks and a D that will struggle to find itself with a thin secondary and little pass rush. Very few stars on the roster, allot of work to do between now and September.

  30. You haters are really grabbing at straws now. Yeah, they’re OTA’s, but Belichick didn’t fine him, he sat his butt on the bench. Which is well within a coaches’ right. Belichick has no problem reminding undrafted FAs like MButler and JGray that he gave them their chance in the NFL. They need to know their place, whether they get on the cover of SI for one huge gm or not. They could be on the street tomorrow. Good for him. MButler isn’t gonna be handed a starting role, even with that ridiculous CB depth chart.

  31. Did he miss the flight or was it cancelled? Article seems to say both. Kinda over the top but he might be sending a message that this kid has some potential and he better not get used to being the hero

  32. message:

Rules are rules, whatever your contract is, whenever you were drafted, whatever you have or have not done for me lately.

    ______________________________
Of course they are optional, but the player was not there when the program started. Optional means a player can chose to attend or chose not to attend, but it doesn’t mean a player gets to start participating whenever it’s best for his schedule.

Who cares if the flight was cancelled or he missed it. That’s not the teams problem. When I absolutely have to be at a meeting in another city, I don’t book the latest possible flight, because flights get cancelled all the time. Anybody who takes their job seriously or has actual responsibility in their career gets that. If you spend 12 hours a day trolling on PFT this is probably news to you, but it’s reality. You’re welcome.

  42. Can’t any of you “did he miss it or was it cancelled” posters (and reporters) read! The linked Herald’s report is clear as day: the team warns players that in bad weather they must allow extra time and travel early, but Butler scheduled a flight for just the day before and it (somewhat predictably) got delayed. He therefore did not follow team warnings to allow extra time and got penalized for it. End of. BB has done this before to far more senior players than Butler.

And the O in OTA stands for ORGANIZED, not OPTIONAL! If the team instructs its employees to turn up to a specific Organized Team Activity, they are expected to attend.

  52. Waaaa waaaaaa mean ol’ Bill Belichick is at it again.

And you wonder why players on other teams don’t give their utmost every play of every game.

You don’t book the last possible flight to get you there on time. I travel a lot doing the lighting on concert tours and we don’t wait till the last possible flight and then miss a show if its delayed or cancelled.

Butler is a big boy and is expected to act like ones. The only people who would think Belichick’s action here is wrong are the self entitled, whiny children of the nanny state that the US has turned into. You know, the same people that are more worried about “offending” the people out to exterminate the US and who never give even vague respect to anything but their own wishes.

  53. OTA’s are ORGANIZED TEAM ACTIVITIES…Malcolm Butler was supposed to be there, and be there on time!

Where do people get that it’s Optional?
    ____________

Ummm….. there’s the thing called the Collective Bargaining Agreement that very clearly specifies they are optional.

You don’t get paid for attending OTAs, so Belichick can suspend whomever he wants as long as he doesn’t dock their paychecks.

I still don’t think the NFLPA will take kindly to this.

  54. This is how you run a team. This is why the Pats are successful year in and year out. Demanding excellence. Tough guy coaches are a-ok in my book. Tommy Coughlin runs the same tight ship in New York. Accountability is huge. No excuses, do your job. I hear Coughlin fines guys for being less than 15 minutes early to meetings. If you’re ten minutes early, you’re five minutes late. DISCIPLINE. Love it.

  55. Just to be very, very clear about this, to anyone who doesn’t understand how the CBA works:

    These are OPTIONAL workouts
Players are NOT REQUIRED to attend
Players CANNOT be financially impacted by a lack of attendance

Since he’s not getting paid for being there, outside his per diem, I don’t think the NFLPA can actually do anything about it – benching a player isn’t the same thing as taking salary or bonus away.

But you can bet that they’ll be lodging a complaint anyway since this is very clearly against the spirit of their negotiating for VOLUNTARY offseason OTAs. Remember that reduced offseason practice time was a big deal to the NFLPA in 2011 negotiations, so don’t think they’re just going to roll over on this.

  56. oh yes, Bill is the only coach on earth who’ll bench a player- thats why their fumble ratio dropped drastically in ’07. No other coach has ever disciplined players before. And bill just didnt discipline from ’00-’06, he only started in ’07. This solidifies that they didnt deflate balls.

  57. Bill will mold this kid into a professional. OK I know I’m biased because I’m a Pats fan, but still. After the practices for the Super Bowl, Belichick was one of the coaches walking off the field saying that Butler would probably make some plays if he got some snaps against Seattle. After watching my SB DVD over and over, watching Butler compete with Kearse was special – the difference between putting Arrington on him and Butler on him was like night and day…and hats off to Kearse as well – he played with extrordinary effort and skill and he damn near killed me with that miracle catch.

  71. kferguson2002, you say you are a real Colts fan. Please answer me this. What individual connected to the Colts leaked information about an NFL investigation into air pressure of the Patriots balls in the AFCCG?

Why haven’t the Colts come clean on:

    1.Who did it?

    2. Why they didn’t also tell Kravitz their balls were below 12.5 psi as well?

    3. Why haven’t the Colts and the NFL disciplined this individual for conduct detrimental to the league?

First of all what PEDS? Secondly 15 years isn’t that swift pal Keep hoping that all that works out for your sub standard team. Patsnation.

  73. The Patriots fall will be “swift” says another rocket scientist hater. A swift fall is winning the super bowl and not making the playoffs for several years. Since winning their first of four super bowls in the 2001 season the Patriots have won more games in the regular and post season than any other team in the league over a 14 year period, having won the AFC Championship six times and gone to it nine times.

I don’t think you know what the word “swift” means.

  74. Look guys, BB did the same to Jonas Gray in Nov 2014 just after the game of his life. Welker got benched for jokes about Rex Ryan. Coughlin and some other tough coaches do the similar. The rings come in part from discipline.

As to those quoting CBA, look, its long been an inside joke that OTAs are not really “voluntary”. The team can’t fine a guy in money terms, but if he doesn’t play along he can expect some form of “punishment” such as Butler got. Many coaches and team-mates will very publicly chew a player for missing them – as Edgerrin James found out in 2001 when Manning and Mora spoke out.

  76. A few things…

    1. Belichick will do things that other coaches won’t in terms of disciplining his players. he’s been in the NFL for 40 years of his life and has more in that head of his than other coaches. Call it what you want, but it works. The Patriots win a lot of close games by being that much more prepared and coached than other teams–not air pressure = no fumbles garbage, or whatever else the people who lost come up with.

    2. Nobody is above it–not even Brady. Heck, last year he did it to Darrelle Revis. No one here batted an eyelash when that happened.

    3. Sometimes the real story behind the tardiness is not what you read or see the players and coaches talking about. The Jonas Gray “my alarm clock didn’t go off” story had much more to it than what was reported. This incident may have a different background as well, but the Patriots keep that in house as they should. Belichick won’t publicly throw him under the bus. He’s gonna train the lad.

Seahawks draft women beater, but nice try with the murderer comment since he was already a patriot. Seahawks knew Frank Clark likes to smack women around and still drafted him. Its ok to admit your mad about the Super Bowl. You lost to the Greatest Franchise in the modern NFL. We have to GOAT at QB, Greatest head coach of all time and what do the seahawks have a coach who brought his culture of cheating with him from USC and a QB who cant complete a one yard pass. Now say your sorry
    ————————————————————-
I find it funny that your calling the Seahawks out as cheaters. You do realize the pats were penalized twice for cheating. Funny!
    ——————————————————
Taping from the wrong area is hardly cheating. It’s dumb and arrogant but not cheating as whatever was being filmed could have and should have been done legally from the proper position. Deflategate is a sham, a farce, a joke, an injustice. A set up. The slimiest thing ever pulled off by the league office. No evidence that air was intentionally removed, none. No cheating occurred. So no, the Pats have not been penalized for cheating. They have been penalized for stupidity and in the other case, simply unjustified and will be turn over on appeal.

  79. BB grew up the military way. Is it a wonder that he runs a tight ship? He knows discipline is vital in winning. It’s like Patton slapping soldiers for malingering. BB does not mollycoddle. That’s why he wins. Maybe he should run for President.

Bill Belichick is a disgusting human. A great football mind and coach but a disgusting human.

    —————-

When have you ever seen tardiness listed as an acceptable quality for a winner? Is it that hard to expect that a flight could get cancelled and maybe leave a few days earlier as a contingency.

Belichick doesn’t accept lateness. The simple answer for those that play for him is to leave earlier to plan for unexpected delays.

That’s not disgusting in any way.

People have predicted that for 13 years. I guess the theory is that if you keep saying the same thing every year it will be right sooner or later.

  82. Kudos to the Colts for being such sore losers that they felt the need to enact a sting operation in order wrongfully accuse a highly-decorated quarterback with an impeccable record, besmirching his name without proof. Oh, and the league was complicit as well–how honorable.

Win on the field like men for once. This is supposed to be football. If you came out once in a while and smacked the Patriots in the mouth, earning a victory, you wouldn’t have to sneak around like the cowards that you are. The Colts front office should be the ones wearing the scarlet letter on their chests for this entire travesty.

  83. I’m skeptical of this report. Everyone is assuming it’s correct. While keeping a player off the field is standard Belichick operating procedure (he did it to Moss, and Revis, so superstars are not excluded), doing it for 2 weeks is not normal. I’d like to hear this confirmed by someone else before assuming that Butler is actually off the field for this long solely for missing a flight.

  84. It may be that Bill is very comfortable with what Butler does on the field and that he wants Malcolm concentrating on the weight room, the playbook, and film study that are weak areas based on where he played in college.

I can see film study as being a very critical are for a young corner.

We all know Butler has a quick learning curve based on how he responded to the inside slant in the super bowl that Bill had coached him up on that week in practice.

  85. “Patriot fans need to stop acting like Belichick would pull this stunt on anybody because they know damn well if Brady had done this he wouldn’t even think about doing anything about it”

Really? Because over the years he’s sent quite a few guys home including Revis last year for similar things. The list includes several other star players including I believe Wilfork one time.

Brady is not only never late, he’s always first in. Revis told a story last year about how when he started with the Pats he went in for conditioning workouts at 6:30 AM and Brady was already there. Next day he went in at 6:15 and Brady was already there. Next day he went in at 6:00 AM and Brady was already there. After which he gave up.

If only the sadly underachieving players on the franchise you follow had the commitment that Brady does they might be able to compete with the Pats.

  86. It is not often that Belichick has a blank canvas like Butler to mold into the player he wants him to be.

If he is going to be the #1 corner, and he looks to be it, Bill must be working day and night with him.

I think the Patriots defense is going to surprise people this year and that their offense is going to combine a smashmouth capability with two-tightend formations that will give opposing teams fits.

  87. I am guessing Malcolm won’t be making last minute travel plans again in his football future.
It’s called being organize and leaving room for less than perfect timing, sorta like Russell Wilson’s timing on that last throw.
    🙂
    Screw Petey Carroll

  88. Sundaybutter is a Seahawk troll probably the former @regishawk or @realitycheck. I say New England sends him a giant life sized Tom Brady doll that he didn’t receive at Christmas. Then he can finally get his wish and say I tried but couldn’t deflate Tom Brady

  89. Some day Pats fans may experience a real title; one without cheating. But my guess is it’ll happen only after Belicheat and Lady are gone and Krap sells.

Or do it the Pats way and simply cheat.

You know, like Kraft admitted to.

  91. If he was suspended he wouldn’t even be allowed to attend OTA. He was there and participated in all activities except he wasn’t allowed to practice on the field with the rest of the players. The coach has the say on who practices and for how much time.

  92. It’s hilarious that everyone celebrates what they think is discipline on Belichick’s part when, in fact, a lack of personal discipline has led to embarrassing decisions that tarnish his legacy.

  93. All teams cheat but we are not only superior than you we can cheat better than You ha ha ha ha A patsy fan

Just maybe Butler said something expletive in response and got it doubled, but I suspect the real difference here is simply because its the off-season – 3 weeks of exclusion from off-season practices is nothing compared to losing game time (e.g. Welker wasn’t even late to a meeting but sat out part of a game simply for cracking a public joke about Rex Ryan). Had some of those other Pat-players’ infractions been in off-season they’d likely get what Butler had.

  95. kferguson2002, congratulations on the 2014 Finalist banner. Given that you’re a “real” Colts fan, maybe you want to suggest to Irsay that they add the score to the banner, 45-7.

  96. Patriots are sad, sick people?😜😁😀😃😝😛😘😍 maybe sick but indubitably happy!

  97. Reminder to all Pats fans: Patriots caught cheating a 2nd time in 7 years.

    1) Docked 1st Round in 2016 Draft
    2) Docked 4th Round in 2017 Draft
    3) Fined $1 Million dollars
    4) Brady Suspended for 1st 4 games of Season (way too easy of punishment)

Tell us again what a great coach you have??? Oh yeah…they have won a lot of games. But that’s like saying Darren Sharper has “success with the ladies”.

  98. I like how 12colts12 picks out suspensions for a two year period that ended 2 years ago. In other words, the Seahawks have cleaned up their act while the Pats merrily cheat along.

  99. Apparently Mr Butler is raising hell about it and talked to the union about not getting time to practice. The word is, this training time is voluntary in nature and you cannot punish someone allegedly for missing voluntary assignments. So now the Pats are in trouble again.

They should dump Butler and send a no nonsense notice to everyone else, you get here and put your time in if you want to win superbowls.

What fries me is how long has this guy been off work? Feb, Mar, Apr, May and he is late for the first June practice. Ya I would be po’d as the coach too.
