Bill O’Brien may choose the Texans’ starting quarterback “very soon”

Texans coach Bill O’Brien doesn’t want to wait until training camp and the preseason to choose his starting quarterback.

O’Brien said that he may decide between Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett based on their performance at Organized Team Activities and minicamp, and that the starter might already be named before training camp opens.

That decision may be made before training camp,” O’Brien told NFL Media. “They’re out here competing every single day, and it’s pretty intense. So, we may pick a guy very soon. And if we don’t, and the decision does go into training camp, it’ll be made pretty early on. The team needs to know who the guy is, and we need to go forward.”

With the Texans on this year’s Hard Knocks, a quarterback competition would be among the biggest storylines for the NFL’s annual training camp reality series. But O’Brien might take that storyline away long before the reality-TV cameras get to Houston.
