Report: Dez Bryant considering boycotting opener without a new deal

AP

The Cowboys have said that at a certain point, they’ll “make a push” to sign Dez Bryant to a long-term deal.

This is the point where Bryant reminds them how valuable he is, in hopes of nudging that process along.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Bryant is “contemplating not reporting” for the regular season opener without a long-term contract before the July 15 deadline. Mortensen cites “sources familiar with the negotiation strategy,” which narrows the list of people for Jerry Jones to call considerably.

“I’m just not going to comment about that,” Bryant’s agent Tom Condon told Mortensen. “Our goal is still to get something done on a long-term basis by the deadline.”

The source suggested the option of “pulling an Emmitt Smith,” referring to the 1993 holdout of the Hall of Fame running back. An 0-2 start helped spark negotiations toward his long-term deal in the middle of their run of three Super Bowls.

Boycotting the opener would be a fairly bold play for a guy who has played nice, even showing up and doing some individual drills during OTAs despite the fact he doesn’t have a contract. Signing his franchise tender would guarantee him $12.823 million for the year, but a long-term deal will obviously dwarf that.

The Cowboys have reportedly not made a new proposal since Bryant changed agents, from Eugene Parker to Condon.

  1. Isn’t there a rule in the CBA that if a player doesn’t participate in the first game after the franchise tag being applied, they still aren’t allowed to enter free agency?

  2. Go for it Dez. You are the MVP of that team and your idiot QB thinks Witten is the greatest Cowboy of all time.

He deserves to get paid. He’s worth at least two games all by himself.

  3. Mortensen is a horrible source. I hate ESPN. They don’t give me notifications for LEGIT news, but will send me a notification for a stupid rumor. SMH.

  4. I agree, Los Angeles is a much better place to live than Dallas. They’ll be the L.A. Cowboys in 2018.

  5. One other thought… Do you guys realize how stupid this Dez rumor is? Really? The deadline for the deal is 7/15. The game is 8/13. He CANNOT sign a deal after 7/15 until the season is OVER… so he’s sitting out the whole season and losing $12M? Nah.

  6. Just pay him whatever he wants. Without Bryant, that Dallas offense goes from potent to pedestrian.

  7. Cowboys fan here.

Trade him or let him walk if he isn’t going to play.

He’s a great player, but not worth having a player that throws fits that’s expecting a team hindering payday.

serious, you made the same comment about the Boston and the Patriots

you had your team in LA and they left, you don’t deserve the cowboys or the pats, you may wish you had them, nah you should get the chargers, 4 games in LA and four in SD

    just shut up and play

    but it was a catch

  10. I don’t think Dez would miss the first game of the season, however Jerry does need to get this deal done. We lost Murray because Jerry didn’t want to pay him. ( yes I know the Eagles overpaid) I think Murray would have signed for less to stay in Dallas if Jerry had shown ANY real interest in keeping him there. Yet he paid Romo an incredible amount of money and he has yet to win a superbowl. Dez deserves to get paid like a Fitzgerald or a Johnson, and yes I am sorry he signed with Roc-nation , unfortunately Jerry you don’t get to pick his agent.

  11. Des Bryant has never “contemplated” anything in his life. I doubt he could even pronounce the word. I do admire how he runs off crying before games are even over, though.

  12. Talent wise this guy is worth a lot of money. But the entire package of on field play and off field antics makes me think he should get as much as Green or Thomas.

  13. A fair deal would be in the 6 year $65 million with $35-40 mil gteed area for the best player on that team.

Dez isn’t quite irreplaceable but he is pretty close to it for where they will likely be drafting for the shelf life of Romo’s career.

Didn’t they get rid of Murray so they could sign Dez?

What is going on over there?
    ________________________
They got rid of Murray because he is slow, injury prone, and has 1-2 years left after they ran him into the ground.

He also can’t dodge tacklers and is only a downhill runner.

  15. Any article wherein Mortenson cites a “source” is automatically suspect. Let me rephrase: automatically made up.

  16. Quick question, when was the last time a top 5 paid WR team won a Super Bowl (not TE, WR)? While you try to figure that out a hint is WR’s as a whole are overrated.

  17. Who really cares? The CBA and existing contract gives the advantage in this scenario to the team. And, Dallas doesn’t have the cap room to fulfill his wants. So, it doesnt matter…he can sit all winter and then be in a worse position next offseason.

  18. Then he shouldn’t go to camp at a all. Camp is all about developing chemistry and timing. Smith never reported to camp and the Cowboys knew what they were getting into.

If Dez goes to camp takes reps and then holds out for the opener, he’s going to drive a wedge between himself and his team mates. It would be easier to survive a rift between Dez and management but having animosity in the locker room between players is a whole other story.

    Big difference.

  19. @ dirtydrynn27 says:

“Trouble in Dallas!!!! I Love it!”

Trouble? This is a usual tactic of any NFL player that hasn’t been signed to a long term contract.

Haters just can’t help themselves from overreacting to a yearly common occurrence in this league.

When Dallas works out a deal for him, what will the hater comment be at that point?

  20. Lol.. it was a catch? Just one week earlier it was clearly pass interference so Dallas shouldn’t have even been there to begin with.

  21. I like Dez, but he just isn’t worth the money he wants…he’s got 2 things going against him, the lingering potential of a serious off the field issue and more importantly, a tight back that has me concerned about his long range durability…plus, as good as he is, he’s not a game changer – he didn’t come up with the catch that was a catch against Green Bay in the playoffs and the pinky on the line catch against the Giants – truly great players make those plays

  22. And here is what Jerry does…. NOTHING . Bryant has zero recourse but to sit out. He doesn’t get paid, he doesn’t play and lowers his value to someone else. Still can’t become a free agent and only way out,is someone Signs him to an offer sheet and the Cowboys grab a couple of number 1’s . I’m the biggest cowboy fan in the world but he’s not worth 20 million. No wide receiver is. Call his bluff Jerry I’m all for it

  23. WR’s are not worth the money. Dime a dozen. Let him hold out, Fine him and then suspend him conduct detrimental to the team for the next 4 weeks without pay afterwards.

  25. If he’s not under contract because he hasn’t signed his tender, he has every right. It’s not like the scumbags who hold out a year after signing a five year deal.

–Eagles Fan (who would also LOVE to see Dez not play)

  26. All you Dez haters. Do you realize where and what he came from.
While none of us is perfect and neither is Dez, he has come a
long way. He has his teammates respect and has earned it. He also
has a great respect for his teammates. I’m betting he doesn’t miss
the opener. Why do fans love to jump on players like Dez? He supposedly had a bad rap in college and for some reason he can’t shake it.
If we were all judged by our acts in college or for behavior between
the ages 18- 22 ( or longer as in most cases ) we would all be indicted.
Give him a break he has done a commendable job.

  27. True or no, Chris Mortensen is a hack.I love when so many of his “breaking news” articles come up wrong.

  28. Would be a lot easier to pay the man without Romo’s monstrous contract. You’re lucky that 2/5ths of that Oline are on rookie deals too. Cowboys CAP situation is terrible, but you won’t hear that on PFT!

  29. Has Michelle Irvin chimed in yet to back him up or volunteer to council him or maybe take him to a Party Palace and buy him a Coke?

  30. Quick question, when was the last time a top 5 paid WR team won a Super Bowl (not TE, WR)? While you try to figure that out a hint is WR’s as a whole are overrated.

WR’s make QB’s especially in todays NFL. Look at the superbowl. All Brady did was throw 2 yard passes and the WR’s made plays after the catch. So really QB’s are overrated.

Pay the man or trade him because someone will pay him what he is worth.

  31. Dez is a $100M 50M guaranteed type of WR. top 2 in the league. He’d be an idiot not to hold out until jerry pays that lottery ticket. 1yr for 12M? Child please. We’re talking about money that could set up generations for life.

  32. Total bluff.

The guy loves to play football, and he loves being a Cowboy.

He couldn’t watch from afar. Not in his DNA.

  33. If I were the Cowboys, or any other team, my policy for renegotiating would be simple. If a player came to me and said that he had a bad contract, and that he should be making more money, I would ask him who helped him negotiate that “bad” contract in the first place. If it was his current agent, I would say no dice. After all, why would he come back to the table with the same incompetent agent who signed him to the first “bad” deal. I would simply tell him to come back for serious discussions after he found a better agent. That should be every team’s policy. Now how many agents would be telling their clients to renegotiate?

  34. @Dcapettini

LoL did u really just say that? Greatest football player ever? LOL I sure hope you are only like 12 years old because that was the dumbest post I have ever read on here.

NO , its not terrible at all ! its actually shaping up to be pretty awesome ! they actually have plenty of wiggle room over the next several years .. had enough money to TAG dez and cost double or triple vs the cap and PAY HARDY on a 1 yr deal thats pretty cap heavy and still have money to work with especially with a CARR cut or restructure.. they had plenty of $ t pay DeMarco too just chose not to ! their cap situation is not bad at all.. thats a popular myth though but in reality when ALL things r considered it looks very good especially being how many stars they have on their team

    ———————————————————————–
    Wrong.
There was over 8 mins in the game after that call, the TE face masked Hitchens on the play- offsetting penalties. And besides, it gave Stafford a chance to be Stafford and choke away the game with his sack fumble.
    Thanks for playing.

  37. Dumb naive fans thinking that ANY player has this noble desire to ‘play for the good of the team’ and ‘burning DNA not to miss games.’ You live in fantasy world. If Dez tore his patella tendon, think Jerry would be as noble?? Wake up.

Dez, and all true franchise players who’s teams’ success is directly tied to whether or not they play, should all hold out. Emmitt got it right. Watch how quick these teams fold if they start off 0-2 and see another year without a title slip further away.

  38. This report is so bogus. How about this nugget Mortensen… dallascowboys.com has written and screamed from the top of the mountain that Dez has been in and out of the building since OTAs started to meet with his coaches and teammates and even to take part in the conditioning program. Dez has also participated in several practices although not 100% just in one on one drills with Qbs and receivers. So tell me…. if he was so hell bent on missing the first game why would he be at the facility now?….. smh

  39. Let’s see . . . I signed a deal to perform for a specific period of time for a specific amount of money, but now if you don’t give me extra money I won’t perform. Dez signed, so be a man and honor your signature! If not, Dallas should bench him game by game once he does show up.

  40. Maybe if he did not drop the pass on 4th down vs. GB in last year’s playoffs, the Jones’ brothers would be interested in signing him.

For now, he’s overpaid….and the owners fear a long-term contract of $40M + for someone who could be a personal behavior debit in the future.

    Hello Raiders, Dez?

  43. OMG you people are so confused i have no idea where to start LOL …. anyhow it sure is LOVELY to be COWBOYS fan…… i tell ya no matter the time of year the day of the week there is always LIVE conversation and predictions (wishes) for the upcoming season or season… so many doom predictions we all heard before ….. life is GREAT,,, i dunno but holding out serves no purpose for DEZ … hes not allowed to sign a long term deal if he doesnt get it done by 7/15 Emmitt was allowed and did… in this case its DEZ’s people on 6/12 making threats (as they should) but this doesnt make any sense …. DEZ is gonna LOSE money in order to do what? he cant get a new LT deal til nxt year after 7/15 so hes basically threatening to punch himself in the face if they dont do a deal by the deadline? OH OK .. but ummm sounds silly to me … u want more money so u will cost urself even more money in an attempt to just show ur mad? cuz it cant result in a new long term deal til nxt season regrdless if he holds out or not … holding out is like pouting after the fact…. punishing urself to serve no purpose… hey COWBOYS ill take less $$ so u know im mad … ummm OK if u say so .. wink wink

thats like calling a lit candle a forest fire… turmoil?? LMAO umm its 6/12 this is nothing more than an empty threat by his team.. very normal and expected.. i would expect more threats too but its nothing more than words….. they r doing their JOB…. irrelevant .. and if he wants to take less $ to prove a point OK.. im sure cowboys wont argue that but for someone wanting more $ to take less money in an effort to result in nothing is silly but good threat i suppose but Jerry isnt going to budge based on dez threatening to punch himself in the face ..

    Hey Bears fan,
Just because your crappy QB was made by his WRs doesn’t mean all of them are.

  46. Dez Bryant is the face of this team. I know Jason G thinks that know one man defines this team, “But” Dez is the high octane fuel that makes this team go! He has proved it over and over again and again. He makes all the hard catches. And his YAC are off the chart. JJ can find ways to pay everybody else on the team except the face of your franchise. My support is with Dez. They need to find the $$$ and pay the man. He’s at the end of his rookie contract. And all he’s done is put up pro bowl ## since he through up his first X

  48. THUMBS UP IF YOUR TIRED OF THE YEARLY
I NEED A NEW AND BIGGER CONTRACT WHEN I STILL HAVE 1-2 YEARS LEFT ON MY 1st or 2nd CONTRACT
these me 1st greedy my bank account b4 winning or even getting close too a super bowl mentality is horrible
i miss the 70s-early 2000s brand of nfl football wining and super bowl chasing is what the players were all about
The 1st thing they need too teach rookies b4 they even get there official game jerseys or even contracts is the ole say PLAYING IN THE NFL IS A PRIVILEGE NOT A RIGHT

Sure,, but thats not how this works or any of this works…. its 6/12 deadline is not til 7/15 and they still must pay what the market says pay and other WR’s have not set the market the cowboys are not willing right now in June to set the market. obviously Clubs are not seeing Megatron/Fitz deals as “market value” those clubs and most people believe they were and are bad contracts. threatening to unch urself in the face does nothing though… and this is a good time for his agent to change the perception of DEZ being he showed up to OTA’s and he loves football more than anyone on the roster… great move by the agent bu i dont think it holds much water ya know? threatening ..” im gonna take less than the 12.8 million dollars to show you im MAD because if he doesnt have a long term deal by 7/15 hes not allowed per CB to sign one so holding out only hurts your team and cant bring you anymore $$ the THREAT might change perception though so y not throw it out there afterall its 6/12 ….. nothing out of place here

this is very true… but this is the terrible for negotiating a multi million dollar deal … this is the perception this news is meant to change by his AGENT ! in lieu of recent things including showing up without a contract to camp and the perception (truth) you mentioned , this is exactly what his agent should say on 6/12

  52. Well, Dez Bryant is no Emmitt Smith.
A lot of you guys are comparing apples to oranges. Everything was different back in the day. When Emmitt held out, there was no salary cap, no CBA, so he was right to say pay me or I won’t play. He knew the Cowboys couldn’t win without him, because of the way the team was structured. He was the linchpin of the team. When he did return, after getting paid, all he did was win football games. He played through injury and pain with fierce determination. Even with an 0-2 start, the Cowboys won the Super Bowl. That doesn’t happen very often.
I don’t see that in Dez. Was it a catch? It was in the sense that he had two hands on the ball. Did he maintain control and possession of the ball throughout the play? No. So it was a catch, but not a reception. Game over.
Real playmakers make that play. The original #88, Drew Pearson, would have made that play. He once caught a Hail Mary on his hip. Michael Irvin would have made that play. He once tipped an overthrown ball so that it spun in the air and caught it as he fell to the ground in the end zone.
Hell, Dwight Clarke would have made that play. Joe Montana didn’t see a play, so he decided to throw the ball out of bounds. But Dwight Clarke did see a play, and he leaped into the air and caught the ball for a touchdown. That’s why it’s called “The Catch.” It won the game, and ended the Cowboys’ dominance over the 49ers, who then went on to win Super Bowls.
Yes, Dez Bryant is a gifted athlete who can make plays, except when he doesn’t. But is he a game changer? That’s debatable. He is when he makes plays. He’s not when he doesn’t.
Does he deserve to get paid? No more than any other player. If he produces on the field, he’s worth a lot of money. If he doesn’t, then let him test the waters of free agency.
As a Cowboys fan, I’m sick of this. To me, it’s insulting that Dez Bryant is the face of the franchise. The question is not whether the Cowboys cannot win without Dez Bryant. The question is whether they can win with him. And the answer to that question, from what I’ve seen over the last years, is no.
It would be a mistake for Bryant to hold out. It would only lessen his value to the Cowboys and other teams. But it would also be a mistake for Jerry Jones, whom I hate, to submit to his demands and overpay him for a temper tantrum. But I wouldn’t put that past the Jerry. He hasn’t fielded a winning team since 1995.

  53. You people are so stupid he isn’t renegotiating he is as of right now unsigned. He’s not asking for more than what he is making because he isn’t making anything. As for the completely stupid comments of ” if dallas had the money they would sign him ” if you knew anything about football you would know that the franchise tag actually is a bigger cap hit than if they signed him long term. So keep the absolutely stupid unfounded nonsense rolling

  54. Jones should just pay him…. in what exact way was he not performing at the top level in the NFL?

  55. “Well, Dez Bryant is no Emmitt Smith.”

Agreed. Emmitt Smith had the of the top 3 offensive lines ever assembled in the history of professional football. He also had 2 HOF’s in Aikiman & Irvin, not counting the HOF-ers on that line he ran behind (his FB Johnson was also an all-pro). Novachek was very close to the equal of Witten so that’s a wash. Emmitt had LOADS more talent around him then Dez does. Looking at the talent base of both teams, Emmitt was much more fortunate to have that team around him, if Barry had played out his string, Emmitt would be 4K yards behind him. The 2015 Cowboys need Dez as much (or more) than the 93 ‘boys needed Emmitt. The ’93 boys had zero at back up running back. If they had even a competent 2nd string RB, they would not have started 0-2.

  56. $12.8 million dollars is not enough because I make 10.3 million per year and I have a part time job delivering pizzas and pulled my two kids from school to sell lemonade and popcorn and its not enough. Understand !!
