Vikings planning “more balanced” workload for Adrian Peterson

AP

The Vikings don’t plan on playing running back Adrian Peterson in their preseason games and that won’t be the only way they try to limit the wear and tear on his body in his return to the lineup this season.

Running backs coach Kirby Wilson agrees with what we’ve heard from others in the organization about Peterson looking the same physically as he did in the past, but cited the other players that the Vikings have added to the offense as the reason why the team is planning a “more balanced” workload than Peterson’s been used to during his career. Wilson also raved about what he’s seen from second-year back Jerick McKinnon before adding that more balance doesn’t necessarily mean fewer carries for Peterson.

“I think it’s more about snaps per game, because that’s what you have to watch in regard to the wear and tear,” Wilson said, via NFL Media. “How he’ll last for the season is the snaps per game, not the carries or attempts per game, because that comes with the territory. He’s going to get his amount of touches that he gets, it’s the other snaps and plays that will determine how successful he is at lasting during the season and being powerful, strong, aggressive and explosive.”

If Teddy Bridgewater and the receiving corps takes a step forward, it should make for more running room for Peterson when he does get the ball as defenses have to guard against both the run and the pass more vigilantly than in some past seasons. That would be a good thing for the offense as a whole as well as any plans to limit how much of the load Peterson has to carry on his shoulders in 2015.

  1. He’s never been a 3 down back in his entire career and considering how many third downs this Viking offense sees in a season, you would think that alone would limit his snaps.

He can’t pass block, recognize a blitz, or catch out of the backfield so I don’t see anything changing anytime soon.

But what he does, it seems like he does in abundance, father out of wedlock children, make stupid statements in the press and fumble in championship games.

  2. I just can’t wait for the 8 or 9 in the box to stop Adrian and having Wallace burn em on the back side! Or when they load up on the receivers and tight end and Adrian takes it to the house. I just love football!

  3. Couldn’t get to the SB when they had Favre loosening up defenses for him and he was in his prime. Don’t think Teddy’s going to scare people more, and Adrian’s older now.

  4. The important thing is that Teddy gets a lot of opportunities to throw the ball. Peterson and McKinnon should get enough carries that the defense needs to worry about them, but the success of the passing game is going to determine if this offense will take a big step forward. Adrian is a great player, but don’t take the ball out of Teddy’s hands too often.

  5. Wrong side of 29. RB’s don’t put up big career numbers in their 30’s. Especially with a fledgling QB and WR core. I still have no clue why we traded for Wallace. He is horrible.

Bridgewater was slightly worse than Jay Cutler as a rookie.
Most 2nd year QB’s struggle even worse when D-coordinators have film and an offseason to pick apart their strengths and weaknesses.

I just hope AP can get us 1100 yards. That would be a huge accomplishment.

  6. Shouldn’t even be allowed to play. Should have gotten a lifetime ban. I don’t believe in 2nd chances because I have been perfect my entire life.

  7. I’ll never forgive AP for fumbling away the only chance of getting to a SB that I will ever see in my lifetime. I would have beaten him with a switch if I could at the time.

  8. I see what you did there, with “switch”. Good thing you used the double-quotes around the word “switch”, or I wouldn’t have got it. AP. Switch. lol. Pretty clever.

You know, that was a good post right up until the first part of the last paragraph. It would be nice for the Packer trolls that come in to once in their lives keep it on topic and just about the article instead of making their livelihoods trolling.

  10. As a Packers fan I have to say its the Vikings division and we are chasing 8-8 or 9-7 and maybe a shot at a Wild Card spot, and that is if Rodgers stays healthy which he might not.

  11. This sounds like a good idea in theory, but if you don’t reduce his carries, and still reduce his total plays it sounds like you are basically indicating we will likely run the ball majority of the time he is in the game making it easier for defenses to key in on what you are doing.

Right, cause AP is the only person that fumbled in that game. They had 6 fumbles and 2 were from AP. There were several reasons why the Vikings didn’t win that game. Yes, AP was one of them. But to say he fumbled the game away is quite an embellishment.

  13. Yeah. AP really wasn’t very good the 2 years Favre played for MN. He only caught 82 passes for 803 yds, and rushed for another 2950 yds. Oh, and scored 32 TDs. Pretty much 3000 total yds from scrimmage, and 32 TDs. In 32 games. Pretty bad. If AP could’ve picked up a few more blitzes, the Vikes defense would played way better pass defense.

  14. They can afford to have a balanced attack because they finally a quarterback who can find and hit open receivers.

Big things are expected from the Vikings this coming year. Anything less than the playoffs will be a disappointment.

  15. Lions fan here. This team has the chance to be very, very scary this year. I know Rodgers is Rodgers, and that offense will be going, but I fear the Vikings more if they get going because there isn’t a lot of tape on what thy want to do and that defense is also a bruiser.

Should be one tough division this year.

  16. sorry, meant “almost 4000 total yds from scrimmage, and 32 TDs, in 2 years” in my previous post. I don’t watch much football, so maybe someone smart from GB can help answer. is 2000 yds and 16 TDs per season any good? like, 125 yds and 1 TD, every game, for 32 consecutive games, good or no?

  17. Every team in the league should fear the Vikings this coming season, they have an abundance of talent and a coaching staff that would make Vince Lombardi jealous! People need to get use to hearing “He’s Loose” by the great Paul Allen!

  18. More balance is also known as… “We now have a QB that when he throws the ball it goes where he wants it to.”
I feel good about the progress of this team.

  19. The Vikings should make the playoffs now because the Bears are mediocre … The Lions D sure as hell isn’t what it was last year and GB is slightly weathered …. However I don’t expect much outside of a one & done with inexperience @ QB // overrated Mike Wallace & and a boatload of miles on AP

As a Viking fan I have to disagree. I think the Vikings are better than they have been but until they prove it on the field the Packers are still the class of the NFCN. Could it be taken over this year? Maybe. But until it happens, no discounting the Packers. I appreciate you coming into a Viking thread and not trolling.

That’s actually a fair statement and until Bridgewater proves himself and it happens, there’s no argument. The only thing I’ll say is the Vikings defense is better than it was in 2009 and the OLine may be better too. That will help if true.

  22. “Right, cause AP is the only person that fumbled in that game. They had 6 fumbles and 2 were from AP. There were several reasons why the Vikings didn’t win that game. Yes, AP was one of them.”

It is when you are supposed to be the best RB on the planet with the strongest handshake/grip known to man. It would be like Rodgers throwing 4 INT’s in a game that they turned the ball over 8 times. Yes, other people may have turned the ball over as well, but you wouldn’t expect that from their best player in a key game.

  23. The team will be fine, even if Bridgewater doesn’t take a huge stride forward. The x-factor is that O-Line. Was injured and ugly last year. Who’s going to plat RG, and will Kalil act like a 4th overall pick ever again?

  24. I’m getting goose bumps just reading these posts. Last year was a very difficult, frustrating year to be a Viking fan. I have a lot of optimism for the first time in 3+ years. If this team starts clicking, we have a real shot. Zim was the best hire in a long time.

It is my favorite thing in the world to watch a disciplined, hard hitting Vikes defense impose their will on one side, and conversely bear witness to the best RB in my generation as he rips holes through opposing defenses. All the while my boy PA preaches poetry in the press box.

Football, you can’t arrive soon enough.

  28. Not a huge surprise as the Vikings finally have a QB that doesn’t completely suck (other than the Favre year).

  29. Ha Ha! Vikings fans are incredible. When Packer fans say the same thing about their run game over the years…. Vikings fans talk about how their run game sucks.

Rodgers is >>>>>> Bridgewater yet his running game is better. And the running game got WORSE in 2014 with the supposed better QB.

Talking out of both sides of the mouth is nothing new for Vikes fans.

It’s amazing that a QB is considered good when he puts up numbers worse than Tebow did his first year as a starter.

  30. Teddy Bridgewater
    2014 GP: 13 TD’s Pass: 14 INT: 12 TD Rush: 1 Playoff wins: 0
    Tim Tebow
    2011 GP: 14 TD’s Pass: 12 INT: 6 TD Rush: 6 Playoff Wins: 1

    ————————————————————
Hey, it happens, it’s not supposed to but it does. I mean, Brady* is one of the best QB’s and Welker was his go to guy but in the SB loss Brady somehow misfired and Welker didn’t manage to catch that pass that would have prevented them from losing. And Wilson isn’t supposed to throw a pick from inside the 5 with time running out in the SB, but it happened. I actually hated Nafahu Tahi more for inexplicably being the 12th man in the huddle that set up that fateful int instead of a GW FG attempt in ’09. That being said, I like this years team with all the young talent on both sides of the ball and hopefully TB can build off of last year, especially the last few games, and the team can get back to the playoffs and see how it goes from there. A lot of optimism, not delusion. I liked what I saw from McKinnon last year and hopefully he can get 10-15 touches a game and give TB another weapon to throw to on 3rd downs.

  32. People like to talk about all the mileage Peterson has on him and that running backs fall off the face of the earth when they turn 30. He only has 2,054 carries in his career. Look at how many carries these other running backs of Adrian’s caliber had when they turned 30:

    Emmitt Smith: 2,914
    Walter Payton: 2,666
    Curtis Martin: 2,604
    Ladainian Tomlinson: 2,657
    Jerome Bettis: 2,686
    Eric Dickerson: 2,450

Those guys averaged 1,500 carries after their 2,054th. Given today’s medical advances, the way Adrian stays in shape, and having a year off to rest his body, is it ridiculous to think he could have five more 300-carry seasons left? If his yards per carry drops off the way those guys’ did, he would average around 1,400 yards a year.

  33. It’s time for us Packer fans to live in the present the Vikings are on the rise meanwhile we will continue to get worst, Rodgers is on the decline as he proved in the NFCCG.

  34. Super Bowl XI :::: the last time you even showed up in the big game January 1977
32-14…..Viking fans today would sell their souls to get that close ….

  35. He can’t pass block, recognize a blitz, or catch out of the backfield so I don’t see anything changing anytime soon.
    ——
Except, none of that is true. Compare AP’s receiving numbers to Lynch. Or maybe neither of them can catch?

  36. Couldn’t get to the SB when they had Favre loosening up defenses for him and he was in his prime. Don’t think Teddy’s going to scare people more, and Adrian’s older now.
    —-
So your example is, the one year during APs career when he had a healthy good QB, the team only got within minutes of a SB, therefore; AP sucks as a RB?!

Yes, you’re right. Defenses should completely ignore Teddy and continue to put 8-9 men in the box to stop only the rush. Man do I hope defenses do that this year. They will be very surprised to learn Teddy doesn’t panic like Ponder did.

  37. LT is most recent on your list the rest are 9 out or way before…. Goes to show mileage says a lot & not many RB’s are horses like they used to be…. Plus it won’t matter Minnesota will be playing in the Super Bowl the day Madden ’16 gets released….

  38. “is it ridiculous to think he could have five more 300-carry seasons left? If his yards per carry drops off the way those guys’ did, he would average around 1,400 yards a year.”

    —————

HaHa! Thanks for the laughs!!! Averaging 1400 yards/year after 30. He hasn’t broken 1400 yards in all but 2 seasons in Minnesota when he was UNDER 30.

    SKOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  39. Yeah, sorry that most of the NFL’s all-time leading rushers haven’t played that recently. I think my point stands that (a) Peterson doesn’t have much mileage, and (b) all-time greats can put up a lot of mileage.

  40. So your example is, the one year during APs career when he had a healthy good QB, the team only got within minutes of a SB, therefore; AP sucks as a RB?!

Nope, didn’t say he sucked or sucks. Said that having a decent passing game and Adrian Peterson does not necessarily = Super Bowl. Thought it was pretty straightforward.

  41. All time RB’s don’t mean a trip to the SB like it used too…. That’s my point … Vikings are one dimensional squad… No way you can count on Teddy….

  42. AP has shown to be a great running back but is a running back worth that kind of salary.

Can his production be replaced by a cheaper alternative?

My guess is that this will be his last year and he will run for 1,000 yards.

Viking should be better this year. I will say they take 2nd place in the division and get a wild card birth.

Playing the Seahawks in the 1st round and losing.

The Vikings seem to be trending up will the Bears and Lions are trending down.

    Signed,

    A Packer fan.

    ———-

Yeah, you and your fellow purple trolls have been telling us that for the last decade.

    Yawn.

But buck up, the window for Vikings off-season championships will always remain open! The Vikings have never lost in the spring!

  44. AP is the best running back in the league until proven otherwise. The combination of speed and strength is second to none currently.

Basically the Vikings are getting more confident in throwing because they have a promising young talent. Teddy had one of the best seasons’s stats wise in a rookie season.

Can Packer Trolls please stop comparing him to Tim Tebow? Tim probably had a team, that had their best players healthy, wasn’t riddled with injuries in the O-line, the tight end, better receivers, and didn’t have a distraction factor of their star player getting arrested. Also learning a new offense, new coaching staff. The reason Tebow didn’t continue in the NFL has nothing to do with his rookie season. It’s because he was a clown show that couldn’t develop into a pocket passer.

Teddy broke many rookie records in the NFL, and had comparable rookie stats to Fran Tarkington, Manning and many good QB’s. He showed promise which is all you can really ask in a rookie season. So nobody knows what exactly Teddy can bring. But there is no reason MN fans can’t be optimistic in what he can bring.

Packer Trolls your team is the best in the division. Enjoy it! You have every right to enjoy and be proud of your team. But why troll other teams pages?

I will only say enjoy the Packers being good because nothing lasts forever. The Packer fanbase has been blessed by a rare occurrence of back to back QB’s that are hall of fame franchise QB’s. This is not normal and before this string of good luck the Packers were in the basement of the NFC North. Rodgers is great, but nothing lasts forever. Yes the Vikings have no championships, yes you are better. Can’t you not troll us and just let fans enjoy their teams?

There is many reasons to be more optimistic about this season. But lets not get ahead of ourselves and let our team show us they are ready to contend.

    _______

Thanks for the insight. Nobody is saying a Super Bowl is automatic. It’s hard to win the Super Bowl. Nobody knows that better than us. But if you have an elite young quarterback, a great defense, and a Hall of Fame running back, you have a chip, a chair, and a chance. They aren’t there yet, but they’re getting there…

  47. It all comes down to “we got to play the games”to see how this will shake out. Oh baby, it’s going to be a fun season! SKOL!!!!

  48. Even though Peterson and the Vikings turned-over the ball so many times in the 2009 NFCCG, the Vikings still would have won if the officials — Pete Morelli et al.; how does he still have a job? — weren’t so blatantly biased and/or incompetent. Literally, if the officials had correctly called even one of their last 5 or 6 horrendous calls/omissions, the Vikings would have gone to the Super Bowl that year. That’s the truth.

  49. Adrian Peterson “cost” the Vikings a championship….

dumbest comment from packers trolls ever.

Adrian Peterson fumbles lost in NFC Championship = 0

  50. AP has shown to be a great running back but is a running back worth that kind of salary.

Can his production be replaced by a cheaper alternative?
    ——
I really don’t think he can be replaced. And with a QB making $1.5 mil, he doesn’t need to be. AP averages 1,200 yards and 11 td’s in his career. Maybe more. Last year, without him, no RB on the team gained 600 yards. The top two RB’s didn’t gain together what AP will gain this year. Not to mention the respect AP gets which should result in open passing lanes. Teddy is much calmer in the pocket than Ponder ever was.

  51. All time RB’s don’t mean a trip to the SB like it used too…. That’s my point … Vikings are one dimensional squad… No way you can count on Teddy….
    ——
Time will tell. But, Teddy was 6-6 as a starter, and had the best QB rating in the NFL over the last 4 weeks of the season. With AP and Rudolph back, the addition of Wallace, and a healthy o-line, tell me why Teddy should play worse.

  52. Nope, didn’t say he sucked or sucks. Said that having a decent passing game and Adrian Peterson does not necessarily = Super Bowl. Thought it was pretty straightforward.

Thanks Captain Obvious. But, those factors plus a solid defense means a team has a chance! Playoffs first, then bigger goals.

As a Packers fan, I appreciate your kind words about them and Rodgers.
I also understand and actually agree with you about the sarcasm from Packers fans toward your Vikings. It does get pretty childish.
That said, it’s a two way street.
I constantly see the Packers and especially Aaron Rodgers get toasted by Vikings fans, too.
I never used to get involved in it, and laughed it off. But now I can’t help myself. I will respond by throwing darts at the Vikings and their fans. It’s always done with tongue in cheek, and designed to tweak those Vikings fans who do it.
With Peterson though, I’m very serious. The guy is a child abuser in my mind and I have no tolerance for anyone who abuses a child. I have zero respect for him.
And as a reminder to those Vikings fans who are dart throwers:
    Packers: 13 NFL championships
    Vikings: No NFL championships
To you, ajzinnecker — good luck next season and may the best team win.

  54. Go Pack go77. Just go put a Vikings Jersey on and go burn all you have that is green and gold. Even believing that the Vikings will won the division is ludicrous at best in Alice in Wonderland. It will be the Packers or the Lions in the top spot. Also give the pack a little credit? 9-7 at best if Rodgers stays healthy? Some fan you are. Your name should be SkolVikings77.

  55. Vikings may be a team on the rise. But the place to prove it is on the field. Not with fans running off at the mouth.

A 10-win season would be a huge step forward for this team. But it won’t be easy.

Establishing a winning culture is critical. That has not been done yet up there. And there is only one way to do it. That is, to consistently win and expect to win football games.

Establishing a winning culture is what Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren and Reggie White brought to Green Bay. The jury is still out on that in Minnesota.,

  56. To the guy who said AP has “only” rushed for more than 1400 yards in a season, twice in his career: AP has only been in the league 8 seasons. 2014 he played 1 game, so technically, doesn’t factor in statistically to any meaningful stats. Of the remaining 7 seasons, AP has never averaged fewer than 86.5 yards per game, over the span of the entire season. Multiply 86.5 times 16 games, you get 1,384 yards per 16 game season. Not counting 2014 (his suspended season), AP has missed a total 6 games, over 7 full seasons. 102 games, played in 96. At every defensive coordinated knew he was getting the ball, on nearly every down, and all AP did is “average” 1384 yards per season, for 7 consecutive seasons. 16 more yards, FOR THE ENTIRE season, just ONE more yard per game, gets AP to 1400 yards, for 7 CONSECUTIVE SEASONS. With NO QB play to speak if. Seriously, hate the player all you want, but numbers never lie. AP’s numbers place him in very near the top of the list of Greatest RB in the History of the NFL. First Ballot HoF unanimous selection already, and STILL hasn’t even peaked.

  57. whatever just happened
He can’t pass block, recognize a blitz, or catch out of the backfield so I don’t see anything changing anytime soon.

    )))))))))))))))))))))

LT averaged 44 catches a year under Norv’s offense. When AD had Favre as a QB he had 43 catches. It isn’t true he can’t catch out of the backfield. Keep thinking that though.
