Adrian Peterson moving past anger at Vikings, focused on football

Getty Images

For months, Adrian Peterson and people close to him have indicated that he was angry at the Vikings and wanted to move on from Minnesota. But that’s not what Peterson is saying now.

Although Peterson’s father has said that Adrian thinks Vikings COO Kevin Warren worked with the NFL to keep Peterson off the field last year, Peterson now says he’s not thinking about that.

“I really haven’t had the opportunity to talk to Kevin Warren, but I will,’’ Peterson told the Pioneer Press. “But right now I’m focused on football. I’m focused on controlling the things that I can control and moving forward.’’

The reality is, if anyone has a right to be angry, it’s the Vikings who have a reason to be angry at Peterson: It was Peterson’s abuse of his son that gave the Vikings no choice but to send him home last season, and the Vikings kept paying Peterson to do nothing even after he was placed on the commissioner’s exempt list. The Vikings showed a lot of loyalty to Peterson, and that loyalty was rewarded with Peterson complaining that the Vikings wouldn’t guarantee future years on his contract.

Now Peterson is focusing on football again. That’s all the Vikings wanted him to do.

  1. With green Bay being in total shock from the most epic choke job in the history of sports this team will take over the division with ease!

  2. The Vikings and Peterson must show the ability to move on, and it looks like they’re doing a fine job of doing so. Unlike all Packer fans who don’t have the ability to move on past an all-you-can-eat buffet.

  3. Hmm….moving on from unjustified anger over circumstances arising out of conduct solely within his control and focusing on earning income in his chosen profession? It really shouldn’t be a news story but maybe counts as maturation and character development.

  4. One of two things will happen-
    1) Peterson will dominate.
    2) peterson will not be playing for some reason, injury, legal, whatever may come up.

Those are the ONLY two things that could happen this year with him. If he is ON the field, watch out.

  5. I couldnt believe the “slavery” comment. Yes, racism is alive and well. Even after e1 was saying elect this guy for pres. and it will all but go away. Remember that? Voting for a guy based on skin color was a very, very, bad idea. I don’t care what race you are.

  6. The Vikings continually improved with every game as the season went on last year without AP. Outstanding coaching staff with a young Bridgewater set to become a star, and the addition of AP and a very good draft class will only make them better. Meanwhile, the Packers have an aging team with a ton of money tied up in Rogers and an aging Mathews. Detroit just let their best defensive player walk and the QB hasn’t been able to win a big game for them since he got there. Chicago, well, Chicago has Cutler. Really don’t need to say any more than that about Chicago. Like it or not, NFC North fans, the Vikings are building the dominant team of the future for the NFC.

  7. He beats his kid … get suspended by the league … but who is he mad at … the guys who paid him $14 million to do nothing. Yeah, makes complete sense.

  8. You have no right to be angry Adrian! You are not the victim! Stop assaulting your children. Go to work. Shut up. Earn $12 million!

  9. Has anybody ever played sting pong? It’s a variation of ping pong where the player who allows the point lifts up their shirt, and the player who scores the point hits the ball at them as hard as they can.

I was playing that game with some cousins over Christmas. Then, they took it up a notch and the player who scored the point hit the bare stomach of the player who allowed the point with the paddle.

We proceeded to name that game “Peterson pong”.

  10. Aging team?

    last year ave. age
    Vikings 25.58
    Packers 25.62

Meanwhile Minnesota has an unproven QB surrounded by skill positions players that have a history of being malcontent.

Vikings as usual are building a dormant team of the future.

  11. After 54 years and still counting the Vikes have still yet to move past the embarrassment and haplessness of not winning a Championship. Even after 27 playoff appearances, the Vikings have failed to bring home a championship. There comes a time were you should really just cut your losses and throw in the towel.

    ZERO.

  12. Thank for rehashing old news and continuing to be judgmental David. You never disappoint. Maybe some therapy will help others here also move forward. I’ve been past it for a couple months now.

  13. Nice to see the vikings working so hard and moving on! Meanwhile our inbred little sisters to the east are shaving the backs of their wives and burrowing out from a long winter!

  14. For all of those who rush to judgement-
    Here are some FACTS:
    1. The Vikings did not care about what he did – they were going to play him, until public outcry swayed them to bench him.
    2. As the outcry mounted, they then took the “moral high ground”, and started talking about “character “.
    3. Instead of cutting or waiving him (in wich case another team would SURELY snap him up), they played the trump card of the commissioner’s list to keep him, CHOOSING to pay him for not playing, rather than lose him without getting anything in return
    4. The then used his unhappiness and the inevitable media circus to drive up his value, in case they could trade him.
    5. They then refused to consider compensating him at the inflated value that THEY created.
    Just sayin.

    .

  15. Maybe he realized that playing the whiney beotch victim act wasn’t going to make him money. He’ll still be broke and incarcerated within 5 years after retirement. He never got it.

  16. The Packers would like to see Eddie Lacey move past the buffet table once in a while.
    ————————–

The same Offensive Rookie of the Year Eddie Lacy who has totally embarrassed Xavier Rhodes twice and Blanton by flat out steamrolling them? Also the same pro bowler Eddie Lacy who has averaged 1,500 yds per season his first 2 years. The same Eddie Lacy who is a great and willing blocker and excellent pass receiver? If you are talking about him let him eat all he wants because its worth the price of admission to see him put to shame to those hapless viking defenders.

  19. “Honey, out of the kindness of my heart, I’ve decided to not be angry with you for catching me fooling around.”

    Yeah! That’ll work!

  20. The Vikings look like a much better team than in the last few years. Much better coaching staff & front office, new stadium coming next year, & a young, talented team.

  21. Adrian’s got a right to be angry. He’s a ball player, Minnesota sat him down. They didn’t have to, at the time Goodell was still hiding from women under his desk. It’s like his old man said, it was just a good ol’boy network keeping him down.

Peterson will play – it’s what he does, he owes it to the game, and he’s who we come to see – but he’ll take his resentment of the team management to his grave.

  22. “Eddie Lacy doesn’t beat children. He can also read, write and speak like an intelligent human being.”

I read the article again and still can’t find Eddie Lacy’s name. Focus people. The article is about AP coming read to play. Good, because I am ready to watch!

  23. Cutler and Stafford are miles and miles better then Bridgewater will ever be.

Teddy is just another Geno Smith, RG3 and Mike Vick…0ver hyped bust!

That sounds like something I might have said!

  25. Lesson learned by the Vikings. Put in his contract that he is to sleep at the facilities, including during the off season, and he is to have only strongly supervised visits with his many, many children. Then, the next time he screws up like this, he’ll have a legitimate reason to be mad at the Vikings.

It’s because the Vikings have given their fans absolutely no bragging rights whatsoever, not on any level. Insults and putdowns is the only ammunition they have. If they had something else, they’d use it. They don’t.

The Packers own the Vikings, and their fans can only respond like second-graders. No wonder they still like Peterson.

  35. “The experts that say Teddy has a very nice career ahead of him.”

These experts are about as opinionated as anyone who posts on PFT. I will listen to the rlpftt guy, his view sounds correct.

  36. U call it bold predictions, but it’s more about being optimistic & supportive of the Vikes. Here at the local sports pub, the Packers are pretty much the loudest and most obnoxious of all. The fans of the other teams notice the same thing.

You may have been good the last few years, but I remember for many years, not so much.

  37. AP will be just fine despite all the haters. He learned the hard way that life isn’t fair. I’m rooting for him to stay focused and put last years experience behind him and prove that he is as great a running back that ever played. He made a mistake, and will be better for it in time. That is my wish for the young man.

  38. “……..the Packers are pretty much the loudest and most obnoxious of all.”

Fans of all teams in all sports say the same thing about all the fans of all the teams they don’t like. Like Viking fans sip apple juice at the games.

    My goodness…….grow up.

  39. The “experts” they keep touting must be regional Minnesota homers (or Peter King). Everything I’ve seen and read says there’s reason for cautious optimism regarding Bridgewater; that he had a “nice” rookie season and looks poised to take a step forward but that there’s no guaranteeing any step forward.

  40. At Lambeau, when Bears fans and Lions fans are in attendance, we party and have a good time………because we share mutual respect.

When Vikings fans are in town, there’s fights. Because they show no respect. The alcohol cut-off late in the game at Lambeau is because Viking fans can’t handle themselves. That’s a fact, by the way.

Let me add this: “All the other fans think they’re jerks too.”

    Too easy. Wow

As a huge Bear’s fan, I endorse this Packer’s fan statement. I just don’t understand why Viking’s fans have to argue and bicker so much. Just wait until you win and respect the teams in your division that are better than you. It’s ok to talk a little trash and mess around, but Vike fans take everything so personal.

  42. Peterson was angry at the Vikings???? That’s like saying Charles Manson was angry at the police for arresting him.

Peterson is even dumber than I thought he was. The Vikings are not the bad guys in this. He is.

Any Vikings fan who goes to their first home game and cheers for that idiot ought to have their heads examined. If you have any class at all, boo the heck out of him to show him what you think of child abusers.

  45. Living on west coast I go to sports bars at 10 AM to watch the Viking game that are not on TV. Almost always fans that are already drinking and getting into it with other fans are the Packer fans.

So…what’s your rationale for the numerous viking fans polluting Packers threads with their filth?

    Answer: Jealousy

  49. “………the last time I got into it with Stellar, he ran and hide after getting caught lying.”

But that’s the only ammunition you have! Don’t you get it? Packer fans retaliate with history, tradition, and past accomplishments.

All you have is insults and putdowns. That’s it! That’s all.

    Sad, actually.

  52. I’m not a fan of either team but I thought the fat buffet eater joke was pretty funny. I just tune in to these articles to read the Vikes and Pack fans giving the business to each other.

  53. “All you have is insults and putdowns. That’s it! That’s all.

You wait just a cotton picking minute here, mister. That just isn’t true and you know it. Why can’t you give credit where credit is due? They don’t only have insults and putdowns. They also have delusions, and plenty of them.

  55. Could have been mentioned with the likes of Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith, etc…. Now mentioned with Ray Rice, OJ Simpson and Lawrence Phillips. Congrads on making a criminal the face of your franchise.

  56. I have a couple of NFL players, one current, one former, that I see on a regular basis for my business, & they are regular people just like anyone, only with more money. They make mistakes like everyone & pay the price. Adrian went too far in his punishing, no doubt, the kid was only 4 for pete’s sake! But like Charles Barkley wisely said, athletes are NOT role models. Sure, some are, but many are not. Hopefully Adrian has learned from it –time will tell.

  57. Viking fans have to be the most disturbed fans in sports, I guess not winning the Super Bowl and losing the most playoff games will do that to you.

  58. You know the saddest part, the best player on the Vikings, the face of the franchise is a child abusing, certified idiot.

Anyone with an ounce of class would renounce the Viking’s decision to bring him back but instead, the Viking fans are already planning the Superbowl parade.

  59. The five stages of loss and grief:

    1. Denial and Isolation

    2. Anger

    3. Bargaining

I respect that the Packers have those SB trophies. Apparently winning doesn’t breed class. Also apparent is that you were born somewhere in the early 80’s, as the Packers didn’t own anything but a horrible record from about 1968-1984. But that’s ok, because as you are seeing now, the NFL is cyclical. Perhaps when the Vikings once again “own” the division, we will just simply ignore the down years, like you do now.

The down years is exactly why we are so resilient. And I won’t deny your pride. The Vikings will deliver someday, you can count on it.

I attended the Ice Bowl as a child. I’ve had season tickets in the family since 1957. I attended every home game during the down years. I never leave early, and the colder the better. I prefer the bench seating and I have Bears and Lions and Viking “regulars” all-around me…..for years. It’s a party and we get along great. I was born and raised in Duluth, MN. I probably have more siblings, family, and friends in the Twin Cities than you.

  71. Hahahaha I punked Adrian Peterson when he was in college at Oklahoma. I was visiting by brother there, we were at a party, and this clown showed up, started acting like he owned the place, and said he should “whoop on everyone” for not giving him respect. Him being 6’1″ 217 lbs. and me 6’6″ 250 lbs. I confronted him and changed his attitude very quickly. I’m just glad another guy there deleted the video before he posted it online or sent it to anyone, etc.

  72. “He didn’t say “win the SB” in the same paragraph, he said contenders. I’m not sure what you were reading.”

I have been reading pipe dream predictions since PFT was established from delusional Vikings fans. We can argue all day about the context of one paragraph all you want, but there is no denying that the Viking fan base acts and boasts like their team is going to be the champs every off season and fails to win anything since they have been in the league.

Maybe now you understand what I’m reading…

  73. I think the Vikes will improve their record from last year, barring a lot of injuries as their will be a few, & improve even more the following year in the new stadium.
The coaching staff is better now with young, talented (& older experienced) players. I’m being supportive & optimistic, I say playoffs both years. I’m not delusional, (for the haters out there), that’s my opinion & really not far out of reach.

We can argue all day about the context of one paragraph all you want, but there is no denying that the Viking fan base acts and boasts like their team is going to be the champs every off season and fails to win anything since they have been in the league.

Maybe now you understand what I’m readin

Can’t we all just get along? Don’t let a few wingnuts ruin it for the rest of us. Maybe someday, rlpftt, when we’re old & gray, we’ll be sitting beside each other at a game & enjoy the sportmanship. There is so much bashing each other on these posts because it’s so easy to do. Tell me i’m wrong.

…………………………………………….. Just a question, why are you glad another guy there deleted the video. Seems like a made up story.

The Vikings will be in the Super Bowl this year. I GUARANTEE IT!!”

Ha ha ha. That made me lol. Good one.

  77. There’s a good story on Zimmer linked in the One Liners, above. The good thing about TB is while he’s getting hyped (the NFL does give black QBs extra press) he’s not joining in it. Neither is the coach. These two people scare the crap out of GB trolls.

Even if Teddy becomes Jay Cutler….even though Cutler had a better Rookie season….he will never come close to being the best QB in the NFL like Rodgers, so who really cares?

    Unless you like 9-7 teams.

  79. “The reality is, if anyone has a right to be angry, it’s the Vikings who have a reason to be angry at Peterson: It was Peterson’s abuse of his son that gave the Vikings no choice but to send him home last season, and the Vikings kept paying Peterson to do nothing even after he was placed on the commissioner’s exempt list. The Vikings showed a lot of loyalty to Peterson, and that loyalty was rewarded with Peterson complaining that the Vikings wouldn’t guarantee future years on his contract.

Now Peterson is focusing on football again. That’s all the Vikings wanted him to do.”

Very well stated. This pretty much sums up the whole situation.

  80. It’s good that he can forgive them looking askance at him for beating his child. Truly, there’s hope for the world yet.

  81. Adrian as a fan of the vikings first and foremost and certainly you don’t let a mistake mar your career, part of acceptance is to realize you made a mistake , its not a life sentence, I believe you are truly remorseful and want to move on don’t get in your own way. I think that a man of your many accomplishments is unable to accept any error in judgement for you are your worst critic. This is displayed through out your career, its part of being human ,and as great as you are ,you are still human, amazingly so, wishing you the best in the upcoming season personally and professionally, I know some day your son will look back and be nothing but proud.

  82. Despite you Cheeseheads hoping and dreaming that Adrian wouldn’t return to your arch rival, and once you realized he would return, then came the insults one after the other. My response is “talk all you want. Who cares?” Adrian served his punishment and now he’s back ready to be AD against your old, mediocre defense (who was never able to stop him when they were younger). Close your flippin mouths and Live With It. Worry about your own one-trick pony team and HOPE that pony doesn’t have his yearly injury. That’s where your energy should focus.
