Lions make a spot for former Patriots QB Garrett Gilbert

Garrett Gilbert was released by the Patriots to make room for Matt Flynn, but he’s found a new home.

According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Lions claimed Gilbert off waivers, releasing fourth quarterback Anthony Boone to make room for him.

The Patriots were clearly looking for a more experienced backup for Tom Brady and/or Jimmy Garoppolo (for four weeks anyway), so Gilbert became expendable.

Gilbert bounced between the Rams’ and Patriots’ practice squads last year. The former SMU quarterback was a sixth-round pick by the Rams last year. Boone was an undrafted rookie from Duke.

The Lions are fairly set with Matt Stafford and Dan Orlovsky at the top of the depth chart, but perhaps Gilbert could push Kellen Moore for the third spot.
