NFLPA reportedly exploring release of Evan Mathis

Former Eagles guard Evan Mathis wanted a new contract, and he’ll be getting one. But that may not be good enough for the NFL Players Association.

Via Tim McManus of PhillyMag.com, the NFLPA is reviewing the decision to cut Mathis, a two-time Pro Bowl guard. Per McManus, the union is simply gathering information at this point.

It’s possible that the NFLPA suspects that the decision to cut Mathis constitutes retaliation for his decision to skip offseason workouts. The more likely explanation is that the Eagles reacted to multiple reports emerging on Tuesday that Mathis believes the team removed from the table an offer to enhance his contract because Howie Roseman, who made the offer in 2014, no longer serves as the team’s General Manager.

While Mathis may have gotten what he wanted in the short term, he may not get the deal he covets on the open market. With the news emerging Thursday that Mathis would be cut but the Eagles not officially announcing the move until Friday, it seems that the team may have tapped the brakes on formalizing the separation in the hopes that someone would call up with a trade offer — like the Falcons did a year ago once word emerged that the Texans would be cutting backup quarterback T.J. Yates.

The fact that no one made a 13th-hour effort to trade for Mathis could mean no one wants to pay him the $5.5 million he was due to make this year, along with the extra $1 million or so that would have been available under the offer the Eagles ultimately opted to rescind. The fact that a land rush has not quickly emerged for the player’s services tends to bolster that proposition.

  1. Nobody is rushing to sign any 34 year old. NFL rosters will start to become younger and younger. The nflpa figured by keeping rookies to a lower contract the veterans will scoop up more money. Except for the few super stars, it doesn’t appear to be happening.

  2. Most people won’t make 5 million in their lifetime!!!
    I liked Mathis but really???
C’mon man you were being paid top 10 dollars for a guard!!!

  3. Full Investigation concluded.

    his agent is:
    Drew Rosenhaus – Sports agent

    End of Story !

  4. I liked him as a player but either he miscalculated big time, or worse, his agent put one over on him. He will probably end up on a worse team for which he is not a good scheme fit for less money.

  5. Anybody know why he turned down the contract offer last year and now he wants the same offer?
    ——————-

Because he is greedy and lacks intelligence.

  6. I suspect the NFLPA will be reviewing one thing… money.

If Mathis gets a bigger/better contract, they’ll find no “issues.” If Mathis is forced to sign a lesser deal, they’ll find a way to file a complaint.

  7. The player/agent overvalued his worth. They called him on it by not increasing the offer. He played last year and now wants the deal he turned down a year ago and is mad he won’t get it. They cut him because they don’t feel he is with the money especially when you factor in his antics and screeching. How is there a grievance here?

  8. Wish we still had him, but not when he put 1 mil over his team. If he didnt take it when they offered it, hes just plain dumb. Mathis wqs nothing but a journeyman before the eagles signed him. I wish him best of luck trying to get that $ somewhere else, but dont miss him 1 bit.

  9. Anybody know why he turned down the contract offer last year and now he wants the same offer?
    ———————
Probably thought he could get more guaranteed if he had a good year. Gambled on himself and lost.

  10. If Mathis wants to win a championship, then he should be on the phone with Andy Reid and beg for a spot with the Chiefs.
I am sure Mathis will accept a 2 year deal for roughly 3 million per year to be a part of the dynasty team, even for a couple of seasons.

  11. The player is ultimately to blame but the agent puts this bloated value and worth into a players head that the ego just snowballs. This is the result when it comes to a head. Poor advice given by Drew to keep him away unless their goal was to be released all along and test the market.

Maybe there is a team that would up his current offer but wasn’t willing to part with a draft pick for a 34 year old guard. They might have a wink-wink deal w/ Drew that if Matthis got himself released that he would get the contract from the new team. I guess we will have to wait and see.

  12. well he can always play the race card, and call Chip Kelly a racist………oh he’s a white guy? well maybe not

  13. He complained about his contract, the Eagles were gonna give him a 1 million per year incentive based raise, which is more than enough considering he was already being paid great. He turned it down thinking he could make more from another team. He was wrong, then he tried to get that deal back, but the Eagles rescinded that offer, which any team should have, and then he cried about that to the point that got him released.

He made all the wrong moves and it backfired on him horribly. Now he wants the NFLPA to fight for him to try to recoup the money he won’t be able to make up when he signs with his new team.

I liked Mathis, but he was making too much as it is being a 33 year old at a position that’s not that valued. Especially considering he was a nobody before he came here. The Eagles made him. Hopefully all the stuff I have been reading basically devaluing his reputation for being this great guard are true.

  15. I’m not anti-union, but I can’t help but thinking that this is a made-up controversy, or hair-splitting at best.

Pulling back and looking at the big picture reveals a journeyman who played well for a team that he finally stuck with in mid-career, became paid handsomely at his position, and then soured on that deal at ages 33 – 34. His team tried to trade him and found no takers.

Any team would drop him at this point.

Funny how union bashers feel a worker shouldn’t have the right to pay dues for union representation to bargain for better pay and/or benefits.
Yet it’s perfectly OK for people like the Koch brothers or Sheldon Richardson to spend Billions in “union dues” to the “Republican party union”, in effect buying Republican politicians for representation to bargain to wipe out the middle class.

  17. lets be honest the Eagles are 3-7 vs playoff teams and last yr they were supposed to be even better and they regressed actually collapsed down the stretch and anyone whos been around football for longer than a decade realizes what the eagles have done this off season although it may work out it has NEVER worked out before ,,,, NEW QB,WR,RB,CB, every skill position has been replaced with outside guys… success rate has been ZERO .. Chip has not won anything of importance .. Mathis is at the end of his career maybe he doesnt wanna go through a rebuild and wants more security and its best if he leaves .. lot of factors at play here .. speculating is silly

  18. Everybody with a pulse knows that teams are retaliating against players for skipping VOLUNTARY sessions. What else do they have to do, SAY IT?

  19. NFLPA’s statement:

After further review, teams can cut players.

Thank you, that”l be a million dollars, payable to D.Smith. Call anytime.

    ***************************
Spoken like someone who doesn’t know that they basically have been eradicated, thus the demise of the middle class. I’m sure even you can recognize the correlation.

    Then again, probably not.

  21. Fact: it was 2 days AFTER someone (Not the Eagles) leaked the story about the previous offer) .. the name Drew Rosenhaus comes to mind as a likely culprit who is most likely the one that advised Mathis on his strategy of holding out.. it was the breach of confidentiality that cost Mathis his job and the added diss of Howie Roseman in that Breaking story.

The quote from Mathis was that Chip told him they were letting him go so he can fond his value on the open market. I would not be surprised of he comes back to Philly and asks for his job back and even willing to take a little less money. Mathis has to be really pissed at his agent right about now.

  22. Being a Cowboys fan, I have to say the Eagles made a very good move in retaining Mathis. What a moron! Good luck buddy making anywhere near that money next year.

  23. Mathis can always grovel to Chip Kelly and maybe get resigned to his old contract terms of $5.5M this year and $6.5 next year. That’s IF Kelly wants him and thinks he’s worth that much money. My guess is that Kelly doesn’t think he’s worth that much, which is why he cut Mathis.

  24. Drew Rosenhaus talked with the Dolphins and they said One year deal at around the same money $5Mish. The deadline rolled around and they asked for 2-3 year and Dolphins said No. Now Mathis wants his old deal back and wisely the Eagles said No. How is this a Union violation? The Agent and Player gambled and lost. If the Union tries a ploy for “Age Discrimination” I will jump for joy as the the new 55 is 34. Unions are not the problem here… Greed is.

I think the businessmen you mention are smart enough to realize that they need the middle-class to be around to buy their products. Even Henry Ford knew he had to support the farmers so they would have enough money to buy Ford cars and tractors. So he told his engineers to find out how to incorporate farm products into the cars. The result was that each model T used 16 bushels of corn and soybeans for things like cushion stuffing and plastic like coatings.

  26. It’s a business and he clearly isn’t the first 1) star player, or 2) older player to be released. Plus I’m sure there’s way more behind the scenes information that we don’t know about that affected this. Philly’s offence will still be ok and everyone in their brother will just start doing mock drafts with the Eagles grabbing that ‘obvious need of a guard’ for the next 11 months.

  27. Another stain on The Eagles for not retaining their best players.

Multiple reasons are always given from locker room issues to money to playing styles.

Rest assured the players that remain must be taking note. Not good.

  28. Many of us have been following this game for decades. One thing is clear. Drew Rosenhaus is not good for his clients, for teams, or for the league. He’s only good at lining his own pockets. Many teams are just tired of his crap and aren’t going to put up with it anymore.

yeah with the Big Reds only 900k under the cap that’ll work

  31. 34 y/o, missed 7 games last year, getting top 5 guard money. He was to make 6.5 mil next year. I do not blame Drew Rosenhaus for this. Evan is not a 21 yo rookie. Way overplayed the hand. BTW, I was quite surprised by the lack of empathy from his teammates prior to his release.

Oh, that’s rich. The military is the closest thing we have to a socialist organization in this country. 100% government owned and operated. Complete with lifetime government healthcare. But you think it’s ok to deny private sector workers the right to bargain collectively with their employers.

  33. Kind of reminds me of Payton Hillis, who turned down a reasonable offer from the Browns and ended up making considerably less, bouncing from team to team.

Even though he sent some mixed messages that last season with the Browns (getting married mid-season), I still find myself cheering for him when I watch the Giants.

  34. You got to love the fools on this blog that know nothing about how a union works, seems like a few didn’t measure up for an union job. The union are like the lawyers, when was the last time you watch a lawyer look at the camera and say my client is not guilty? Some need to stick to football because they hate the unions, and I guess they hate the people who vote them in. Bill

  35. It is beyond comprehension how stupid players like Mathis are. His original contract was with a different agent signed 18 months ago and was a dam good one. Rosenhaus calls him before the ink dry and tells him he can do better and rework the deal to earn himself a commission. Now instead of earning 12M over the next two years Mathis is on the street. Rosenhaus is the one the Union should be investigating.

  36. abninf–do you realize that without unions and what they’ve done for the last hundred years or so that you wouldn’t have what you have at work? Even if you have a white collar job in an office, you’re still reaping the benefits of what unions fought for info the past…the forty hour work week, paid vacation, sick leave, good working conditions, etc. Not to mention that unions created the middle class, which is dwindling fast.

  37. All of this smoke from ex-players is really starting to smell like a fire..

    Evan, SPEAK UP!

Remember, most of the NFL Head-Shed has endorsed Chip’s moves as “He knows what he wants and what he’s doing.”

Let’s see, Philly. Let’s see if your team doesn’t start eating itself from within.

    Step One.

  38. Don’t know the inside story but I would put my money on Rosenhaus being the instigator (and loser) here.
I’m feeling sorry for anyone under this greedy agent’s belt.

  39. From the comments I’m reading I can say this much…

You guys do NOT know football. Watch the Eagles improve and be a contender this year. Gonna be fun mid season when you guys realize Chip knows what he is doing…

  40. Listen, I am not really Pro-Mathis, but they do really have a case. Its very odd to see a starter cut at this stage of the offseason. It’s not a cap move or an issue of roster space. It really does seem like the reason that they cut him is for skipping voluntary workouts. It doesn’t really matter that it is ridiculous he was asking for more money.

  41. Unions were useful long ago. We have drinking water now. OSHA has it covered. Honest day work for honest day pay. If player unhappy, move on when contract lets you. If team unhappy, move on from player. Injured players or old players are not able to produce same on field as younger healthy players. Union advocates should focus on Bill Clinton pushing NAFTA for his big company buddies so they could put manufacturing across Rio Grande. Now Obama doing same thing to American jobs by pushing illegal immigrants across our borders taking American jobs all over. But they keep you sheep busy little bees with sexual preference, race baiting, and hate the rich. Poor sheep are quickly falling down and your commie socialists are laughing. Unions need to look in the right direction

  42. steeelfann0155 must be a man. “Honest day work for honest day pay.” When women make what they’re worth – minimum equal to men – rather than 77% of it I’ll read the rest of your rant.

  43. Man, I wish I could stop going to work and demand a pay raise because I’m doing more than what’s asked of me. PRIMA DONNAS.

  44. I think Florio nailed this one, The Eagles didn’t care about him missing the workouts but when they started negotiating in the press it was game over.

Rosenhaus does like to get his name in the paper but in this case it may have been at the expense of his client.

Rest assured if they are good enough age isn’t an issue. He’ll be on a team before long.

  47. This is an incredibly stupid thing for them to pursue. What happens if they file and win a grievance? Mathis gets his job back . . . that won’t work . . . and their is no way he gets paid for not playing . . . plus he has requested a trade on various occasions . . . doesn’t it then make sense that since a trade wasn’t possible they gave him the next best thing . . . his release?

His release is better than a trade . . . now he can pick the team he wants to go to . . . a trade would have been to whatever team would bite! This is a non-starter . . . teams can cut players who get vocal . . . and the Eagles have an easy to document history of that!!!

  48. Smokescreen. Playing it all the way through to be sure. He wanted out of Philly & his agent has something going with a team near his home(agents). A legitimate contender this year.
