NFL gives Tom Brady four hours to make his appeal case

Today’s #DeflateGate appeal hearing was apparently so big they had to move it to the basement, and so important they had Tom Brady take an oath that he was telling to truth to Judge Roger Goodell.

But what it apparently won’t be is long.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Brady’s defense team was given four hours “to present its entire case.”

That means the hearing could and should wrap up today. They had originally scheduled Thursday as an option if the proceedings needed to spill over. They started around 9:30 a.m., so plus or minus lunch and bathroom breaks, they should be close to finished.

But with Brady’s side anticipated to nitpick as many details as they possible can in the Ted Wells Report, Goodell apparently wanted to make sure they used their time for that “new information” he’s been asking about for some time.

The commissioner hasn’t put a time frame on himself however, so there’s no telling when any ruling might come.

UPDATE 1:30 p.m. ET: Or, maybe not. League spokesman Greg Aiello tweets to us that there is no strict four-hour time limit, and that Brady’s presentation is expected to go beyond that mark. Perhaps 11 of the 12 clocks at ESPN were mistaken.

  1. What will Bradys punishment be if he gets caught lying under oath? Additional suspension?

  2. 4 games is petty…
If I’m not mistaken shouldn’t repeat offenders (cheaters in this case) punishment be more severe?
Not to mention the Patriots (cheaters) won the Championship!

  3. Won’t take you or your lawyers four hours to produce your text messages to Goodell Brady to prove that your innocent, right!!………and unless you produce those messages, then you’re guilty as charged and suspended for four games…YOU LIAR AND CHEATER!

  4. It’s crap like this that will seriously jeopardize the arbitration rights granted to you in the CBA, Roger.

  5. So in other words don’t tie up Roger with facts. His time is precious. Pointing out the lies just delays his tee time.

  6. Wells took 4 months and Brady is given 4 hours.
    What a crock!!
No wonder Kraft is out of the country. More embarrassing behavior by his illegit son Roger.
In fact Brady spent more time testifying directly to Wells than he’s been given to appeal his suspension.

  7. At the end of the day, the biggest loser in all this has to be Ted Wells.

The publicity brought to his investigation has made him a national joke (on par with Roger Goodell), and no sensible, well heeled individual or business will want anything to do with him.

His ambulance chaser ads will be airing during soap operas soon, in a city near you.

  8. Not fair. Should be allowed to present their entire case. Not Brady’s fault there are so many issues with what the NFL did

  9. In order that you not be allowed to pick apart our biased and non factual report we are putting a time limit on your opportunity to prove we are a bunch of incompetent fools. Signed Roger Goodell

  10. That’s it Roger the Dodger, handcuff Kessler and Company any way you can. After six months you can’t allow more than four hours for the appeal? What a joke. Make sure they don’t have time to expose the truth.

  11. How great it is being a Patriots fan 🙂

Not being a fan of them is like being on the outside of an inside joke hahaha.

    Haters are hella depressed 🙂

  12. in the other thread, the haters were saying it was ridiculous that Brady was testifying under oath, because the presumption was that Brady did it to benefit his own case.

It will be interesting to see what they say in this thread, since you say it was “so important they had Tom Brady take an oath that he was telling to truth to Judge Roger Goodell.”

  13. So they give Brady four hours to refute a report that took months to create.

They haven’t given Brady a single fair shake through any of this, why would they start now????

This is headed for court, where the wheels will fall right off of the NFL’s case.

  14. None of this matters anyway. This whole sham and its outcome was predetermined months ago.

  15. Greg Levy, the CBA expert is at the side of Goddell, so new information can only be tied to the CBA?

i can’t wait for the defamation of character lawsuit

  16. It really doesn’t matter what Brady says to Goodell.

He made up his mind yesterday and already leaked his decision to Chris Mortensen at ESPN (you know, the same duo that let fans spend 4 months thinking “11 out of 12 footballs were deflated”

Turns out they knew at half time that wasn’t true but let the truth languish for FOUR MONTHS and instead Roger did his best to work a jealous fanbase of 31 teams into an angry froth

Brady’s punishment is of course for failing to cooperate in the NFL’s sting operation (the one the NFL’s Dean Blandino is on record lying about) by failing to have footballs deflated below legal levels.

Roger needed this one to change the headlines about how impotent he was on Rice and Peterson. Thanks to millions of jealous fans who would actually believe that the officials and the Laws of Physics are wrong, Roger got what he wanted – though it could all easily backfire on him if Brady continues his fight

  17. Real smooth operation the NFL is running over there.

Pay no attention to the woman beaters, child beaters, drugs & guns. Long term CTE/concussion either.

Let’s just have Goodell drag the best Quarterback of all time name through the mud to take the attention off the real issues.

$5.3 million investigation on air pressure per square inch in a pigskin but Goodell and the NFL will fight to the death over an extra nickel going to a former player just looking to pay his medical bills.

What an absolute disgrace. Nice going @NFLcommish

  18. Are the New England Patriots this biggest cheaters in American sports history?
They seriously might be. They are certainly the biggest biggest black eye in NFL history, that isn’t debatable. Even though Belicheat is pure scum you have to give him credit, the man is a genius…obviously its in a diabolic way but it is undeniable. Can you imagine the dozens of other cheating schemes he has cooked up over the years that were never exposed? Sometimes I talk about this with my buddies and we laugh for hours.

  19. Getting credible sports reporting from ESPN is like getting it from your mailman (who heard it from his Uncle, who knows a guy, that knows a guy, that once was a groundskeeper).

  20. In a bygone era western town somewhere Mayor Goodell, Sherriff Wells & Judge Goodell gave Lonestar Brady a shovel and said ‘DIG’.

Lonestar Brady not only refused to pick up the shovel but he told Goodell & Well$ to ‘SHOVE IT’.

A six month stand-off ensued with ESPN & Unethical News Media handing out torches & pitchforks and they stirred the crowd to hysteria crying ‘DIG’ – ‘DIG’

We eagerly await Clint Eastwood to show up and PAINT The Town RED.

  21. McNally referred to himself as the “Deflator.” and the reason he called himself that is because he wanted to lose weight…YEA OK , see ya Oct 18th Tommy Boy

  22. I can just imagine Goodell and Wells slouched in their chairs…fidgeting….yawning….checking their watches…looking at the clock. They can’t wait for the four hours to be over so they can continue their Spanish inqusition.

  23. UPDATE 1:30 p.m. ET: Or, maybe not.

League spokesman Greg Aiello tweets to us that there is no strict four-hour time limit, and that Brady’s presentation is expected to go beyond that mark.

    ————

so the NFL is monitoring their own leaks to the media while the hearing is going on?

  24. We eagerly await Clint Eastwood to show up and PAINT The Town RED.

But now Judge Goodell said “Time is up – Get outa town.”

As we head for the Mexican Border we come across the US Infantry Commander & Judge who said to us – “Hold on there Partners” , “Let’s have a look at that NFL Town – It’s under MY Jurisdiction.”

  25. 4 months to cook up a sham report, 4 hours to defend himself. Seems legit.

Tell me again, how does suspending the reigning Super Bowl MVP based on nothing but rumors and shoddy science, leading to lawsuits against the NFL, protect the integrity of the game? I mean, it’s clearly working right?

  26. Look, he deliberately attempted to alter the balls, regardless if they were or were not outside of the rules based on the measurements collected, he attempted to cheat and should be punished for that.

Also, I still feel that the story line of Brady returning from suspension looking for vengeance against the team that caught him is far too lucrative from an advertising and PR standpoint for Rodger to lessen the suspension. They did it deliberately knowing it was going to be 4 games. They tweaked the schedules so that he would return against the Colts, they purposely placed some harder games in the front of their schedule to have the pats try and fight back in it. Everything about this is just a larger scale soap opera, and the NFL isn’t going to give it up after the amount of planning that went into it. Brady could show unequivocal proof he personally wasn’t involved in cheating and the NFL would uphold the suspension because of this spectacle they have created out of it.

  27. This defense of Brady is the last hurrah for the current fan base. Once the Patriots start losing playoff games, most of their flock will go silent – and, when they stop showing up in the playoffs altogether, they’ll forget about them and take out their anger on the Celtics, Bruins, and Red Sox.

It’s largely a fair-weather fandom when it comes to the locals.

    Sincerely,
    Born and Raised in Massachusetts

  28. Really – GOD-dell is going to put a clock on Tom Brady?
This is total “TYRANNY” & “REPRESSION”

    Just curios GOD-dell:
Where was the time limit on Teddy Well$ sloppy, incompetent, and amateurish investigation?

Oh, and by the way, what is the time limit for the all mighty GOD-dell’s decision?

  29. .
League toady, Chris Mortenson, is reporting that 11 out of 12 Patriots game balls were more than 2 lbs under game weight. This report was confirmed by Indianapolis Star pseudo journalist and Jim Irsay idol worshiper , Bob Kravitz.

Kravitz commented about his previous columns which called for the Colts to be annointed as AFC Champs and for Bill Belichick to be banned from the NFL for life.

Kravitz stuck to his position that like God, he is infallible. And even though the Wells witch-hunt found absolutely no involvement by Belichick, Kravitz, acting as America’s top arbitrator, continues to demand that Belichick be dismissed.
    .

  30. The guy who had a motion filed against him for contempt of court is the judge hearing the appeal??

    Goodells integrity is unequaled.

    WHAHAHA

Another stupid mistake by Roger Dodger.

  31. I’m confused. There is a text message where Tom Brady demands the footballs to be legally inflated.

Can someone explain to me why he needs to provide a second text to prove his innocence?

  32. billswillnevermove says:

Guilty……….since 2001 of being the biggest fraud to ever wear an NFL uniform.

    _—————————

The Bills are guilty since the dawn of time of pretending to be an NFL franchise.

Even a blind squirrel can find an nut if given 4 chances.

What they hold on to in Buffalo is that they are the best team never to win it.

Congrats on that …really…I’m happy for you.

  33. Consider this practice actually. Here’s how it will go.

    Appeal denied.
    Brady goes to court.
    Suspension vacated.
The court tells the league to appoint an indie arbitrator.
The appeal is heard by the arbitrator.
    Brady is exonerated fully.
Brady plays every game this year.
    The Patriots win the Superbowl.

That about sums it all up.

  34. This is silly. The Patriots already made a deal. The team doesn’t appeal their punishment, and the league reverse or greatly reduces Tom’s suspension. Nothing to see here, let’s move along and get ready for football.

  35. Does it really matter how much time Brady has to give his appeal? He could give videotaped evidence of Andrew Luck sticking a pin in the Patriots footballs and it wouldn’t matter. This thing is fixed and a total sham. Goodell and his minions conducted a ‘sting’ on the Patriots when they damn well knew well in advance of the Colts game that there were questions about the Patriots’ footballs. Instead, the gutless Goodell decides to make a federal case out of at most is a minor transgression. And he and Ted Wells haven’t even proven YET that the Patriots deliberately deflated footballs or that Brady directed anyone to do so. The Wells Report is full of holes and shoddy science yet apparently Goodell is going down with the ship. As a Patriots fan, I really hope Brady takes this as far as he can go if the suspension isn’t vacated. Patriots fans should have spent the off-season celebrating one of the greatest wins in franchise history. Instead they have to hear all the yahoos out there calling them a bunch of cheaters. Just disgraceful. Goodell must go.

  36. Someone explain to me why the NFL should be entitled to the private communications/cell phone contents of Tom Brady.
Was the phone provided by the league to be used for work related communications?
The fact that the league set out to ambush Brady and then conjured up a Swiss cheese of a case to smear his accomplishments as a professional athlete hardly entitle them to his private property.
But whatever, I’m just a clueless jerk. Clearly the PEDhawks are the better team who, coincidentally, were never caught cheating.

…Oh, wait. They were. On multiple occasions.

  37. Brady probably asked for the four hour limit. Beyond four hours in Goodell’s, Wells’ and the other NFL exec’s company would be considered cruel and unusual punishment. I know Brady is superhuman, but even he has his limits.

  38. Brady camp leaks the time limit to the media.
League reacts by saying there is no hard time limit.
    Brady gets more time.

Well played Brady camp. Well played!!!

  39. Crystal ball says:
    1) Roger upholds suspension
    2) Brady appeals
    3) Courts overturn decision based on laclk of evidence
    4) Brady sues NFL for defamation

  40. Sounds like a lot of posters have seen the Washington Post article that totally debunks the Wells report, and shows that it was fraudulent and falsified, and that the NFL deliberately leaked things that made Brady and the team look bad, but were not even true. Nice going, Roger.

  41. The most absurd part of this whole thing is that millions of people have bought into the notion that a slight adjustment in the air pressure of a football is enough to make Brady and the Pats the most successful football team of the modern era.
Is it really that easy to win in the NFL? Suppose they have been doing this Brady’s entire career – what do these people assume Brady’s career would have looked like had they not let a little gas squeak out of those balls? Would a tiny alteration such as this make Cutler or Dalton appear to be an all-time great?
    People are crazy.

  42. GET OVER IT! Yes the NFL did not report the 11 out of 12 balls correctly. That was a mistake on their part, but thats not why Brady was suspended. There was a whole 3 month investigation that costed millions to obtain all NEW information and Wells disregarded anything the NFL had reported or looked into. Did the NFL screw up in its initial reports? yes. Should pats fans keep diverting the issue of brady cheating onto what the NFL did wrong? no. Who cares what the NFL reported initially.

  43. lemmetalkwouldya says:

    =====================================

Are people still going with this conspiracy theory?

The actual reason according to the Patriots is that his job was to inflate and deflate footballs repeatedly.

Now that’s not exactly the smoking gun you probably think it is.

There are “deflators” working on every team in the NFL, with the NY Times 11/23/13 story “Eli Manning’s Footballs Months in the Making” detailing the Giants Deflators, the Skiba Brothers efforts to make sure the footballs are exactly the way Eli likes them – making sure they keep the footballs with them at all times (yes, including the rest rooms).

Surely you know that already though (Seriously – I’ve never encountered fans so fearful and in denial of the facts before. It’s quite amazing.)

  45. NFLPA lawyer….

Mr. Goodell have you prejudged this appeal?

    Goodell…No I haven’t.

NFLPA ….. I have this letter from Vincent saying that you have authorized him to punish Tom Brady. In light of that,, you have an open mind about the this appeal considering the sham 4 million dollar report by Ted Wells?

Goodell…My mind is so open that sometimes my brains fall out. I believed the report didn’t I?

  46. Whatever happens Mr.Kraft can no longer be buddy buddy with owners and Goodell. Scumbags in league office and most of other owners.

  47. Yet Shady and BeliCHEAT only gave the ball boy 91 seconds to deflate the balls.

Wouldn’t see the court until AFTER the suspension is served. If you understood what defamation is, you would know that there is no defamation to sue for.

  50. Someone explain to me why the NFL should be entitled to the private communications/cell phone contents of Tom Brady.
    ——————-
They aren’t asking for all communications. Only the communications between him and the 2 deflator stooges. Printed copies vetted by Brady’s attorney. It isn’t a criminal court case. The CBA states that they can be suspended for cooperating with an investigation. Just like your company can fire you for something as simple as the fact that you smell.

  51. I hope Brady pleads the fifth. He is under oath right?
    —————

Wow. This is unbelievable. He’s not in a court of law. And he is the one who is appealing. How dumb would it be to appeal his suspension and then not say anything? He is the one presenting HIS argument, not the other way around.

  52. Greg Aiello totally lied to Adam Schefter of ESPN saying there was NO 4 hour limit…Meanwhile Schefter just came back with a MEMO from Dan Levy of the NFL that says it will be 4 hours!

This just keeps getting better and better…Popcorn anyone?!!!

  53. Brady doesn’t need four hours to state his case. He needs five minutes.

Having read the Wells report, I can’t understand how it ever got this far. The so called incriminating texts not only fail to provide evidence of cheating, they actually exonerate Brady.

In the report there is a text from Patriots equipment assistant John Jastremski relating to the Patriots game against the Jets in which he states that Brady was right to be angry about the footballs from the Jets game, which, upon post game inspection, it turns out the officials had illegally over-inflated to 16 PSI (something the league has chosen not to investigate). According to Jastremski, they were supposed to be set at 13 PSI and were “hard as rocks”.

So, not only do the texts in the report show that Brady had specifically asked for the game balls to be set at a perfectly legal 13 PSI, it appears to show that any references to one of the equipment guys being the “deflator” is in relation to them correcting the illegal over-inflation by the NFL officials back to the legal setting that Brady asked for.

Is it a crime to deflate an illegally over-inflated football back to legal NFL limits? That I can’t answer. But the evidence exonerating Brady is right there in the report and the League office, the press and the fans of 31 NFL teams have chosen to ignore it.

  54. Report: NFL tells Brady he has 4 hours

    NFL: No we didn’t!

Schefter just moments ago: Here’s a letter from NFL given to ESPN saying Brady has 4 hours

    NFL: crickets

    Hilarity.

  55. Actually Nicofthenorthstar, this has nothing to do with whether or not the air in the balls affected the outcome of games. Nothing at all. This is an issue about integrity, following the rules, sportsmanship, and again INTEGRITY. Tom lied, he got caught, he wouldn’t cooperate, and therefore he must be punished.

If you honestly feel in your “heart of hearts” that Brady knew absolutely nothing about any of this then you really are one of the dumbest people in this country.

I don’t hate the Patriots. Never said a harsh word about the team before this debacle. I don’t hate Tom either, look, he’s top 3 all-time best QB’s to play the game. He needs to listen to Joe Montana and take his punishment and move on!

Brady is the greatest of all time. No doubt about that.

  58. I kind of hope that the suspension is changed to 2 games, Brady doesn’t sue, and everyone arguing one extreme or the other is wrong.

Clearly Kraft accepting the team punishment after all of the fire and brimstone was a result of either Goodell showing him the smoking gun evidence the NFL didn’t include in public reports or that there was a backroom deal made. If there was a smoking gun I feel like we’d have seen it, seeing as how the NFL is looking worse and worse in this.

  78. Goodell has taken the bald face lie to a new extreme. The word “independent” will never mean the same thing ever again.

Warm that crow up. I remember seeing all these before the suspension was handed down.

It’ll go from…”It’s great being a Pats fan” to

    “Conspiraccyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” really quick

    ———————————————

You’ve also seen that we already know that to justify 4 million for Ted Wells Goodell will not reduce the suspension.

It’s going to court and Brady will win.

  80. Have a relative who works for an NFL partner. He said that Brady is already done with his appeal and that he embarrassed himself worse than the Kraft website defense did. Apparently there was no doubt that the appeal was going to fail and 4 games would be the final outcome.

I bet you own the moon too.

  82. If Brady loses the appeal and loses in court because a judge refuses to overturn a CBA authorized arbitrator, despite Goodell’s callous disregard for facts and the capricious and arbitrary penalty imposed, can Brady still sue the NFL, certain media outlets, and individuals due to defamation of character and for damages? I suspect so.

The lies about the footballs that were leaked through the media.

The immediate targeting of Brady as a suspect.

    The charade of “independence”.

The refusal to follow scientific method and proper procedures.

The lack of proof that lead to the ambiguous “more probable than not” charge that Brady “was generally aware” of deflation of footballs in the AFCCG.

The virtual “rico case” violation of collusion in the defamation.

The real evidence of damage to Brady.

The question I would ask is can Brady bring the case in state court in Massachusetts where the AFCCG was played, whee he lives, where he works, and where the NFL has a franchise?

Goodell and the NFL have played with a stacked deck but Brady just may have an endgame they didn’t anticipate.

  83. …Perhaps 11 of the 12 clocks at ESPN were mistaken…

ESPN is only reporting the 11 of 12 clocks as incorrect from a “trusted source” inside the hearing.

An NFL official who was responsible for checking that the clocks were correct was found trying to sell one on E-Bay.

When asked about how accurate the clocks were Coach B started rambling about the Equation of Time.
