Broncos wanted to keep Manning, but not before offering $10 million cut

With every snippet of information that comes out, we get another glimpse of how weird this offseason was for the Broncos and quarterback Peyton Manning.

According to longtime beat writer Mike Klis of 9 News in Denver, the Broncos “were never letting Peyton Manning go.”

They did, however, ask him to take a $10 million pay cut, a huge gap from the $4 million they eventually arm-twisted out of him.

Frankly, the fact Manning didn’t tell John Elway to stick his horseshoe somewhere is probably a sign that Manning valued inertia more than the Broncos did. While he may not be the quarterback he once was, he’s still Peyton Manning, and lopping off more than half his salary is something you don’t do unless you’re prepared for him to walk.

Obviously it was a starting point in a negotiation, but the fact they went so hard after his money is still amazing.

96 responses to “Broncos wanted to keep Manning, but not before offering $10 million cut

  1. They gave him what he wanted to get him signed, buyer remorse on an aging QB no matter who he is/was.

  2. Manning makes the Broncos relevant. I don’t understand trying to squeeze Manning who already has a short term contract. He took the Broncos to a Superbowl and AFC title game if anyone forgot.

  3. Especially since the guy earns it more than anyone else. He’s a product of hard work and dedication. Manning has never “wowed” anyone with his athletic ability or his arm strength, but he’ll go down as arguably the best QB ever, and that’s all because of the time and effort he put into it. I understand asking for a pay cut, but that’s just kind of disrespectful, especially when you look at he eventually took one, and they still don’t have D.Thomas at the facility, working with Manning in the new offense. Way to go John…

  4. Broncos fans were clearing space in the trophy case when they signed , who they call PFManning. It must be difficult to see the window closing shut on the greatest regular season QB of all time.

  5. This would have happened to Brady last year as well if it weren’t for delfating balls. Deflating balls has helped Brady avoid this problem. Lets see what happens next year when Brady isn’t playing with deflated balls.

  6. Not a Donks fan but I actually believe Manning could have an improved season this year.

Yes his arm is noodling somewhat but a lot of the fall off towards the end of last season was due to the quad injury which sapped his leg strength.

He’s also going to give it everything he’s got in his final year.

There’s still about 28 other QBs I’d rather face than Manning. Unless its a cold post season Sunday.

  7. Well even if Manning took a $10MM pay cut, he would still only be in the Tom Brady pay range, and if he wants to win, that is not unreasonable to ask, it allows the Broncos to make a run in what is certainly Manning’s last go.

  8. Once you lose a great quarterback you take for granted there’s no telling how long it will take to find the next franchise qb…

look at Green Bay from Bart Starr to Brett Favre
Miami from Marino to MAYBE Tannehill
    Buffalo from Kelly to ???

just saying once Peyton’s gone it could be a long long time before the next guy comes along in Denver so maybe not try to piss him off and start rumors and ask for money back isn’t the right thing to do right now

  9. Manning viewed the paycut he took before as a charitable donation from one equine-looking brother to another. But the man has to put oats on the table at the end of the day. I mean, this is Peyton here… you do not go after Peyton’s money without consequences and repercussions unless he says so.

  10. If this is true, Peyton will be incensed that leaks of this nature are now coming out. Asking Him to take a $10M haircut is blasphemous. Broncos are playing with fire and it is a big distraction to the preparation for the season ahead. On top of the loss of key O-linemen, you can expect Denver to take a step backwards.

  11. Quarterbacks take pay cuts all the time. What’s so special about a guy who is terrible in the post-season?

If John Elwat sticks that horse shoe anywhere he should nail it to pey peys forehead.

  12. I am unsure why Peyton Manning is considered an “elite” quarterback.
His brother Eli has won two Super Bowls and so has Big Ben, but neither of those two are considered elite.
Peyton Manning, Brees and Rodgers are all considered elite, but only have one title each.

  13. It’s always interesting to see how the twilight of a future Hall of Famer plays out. Manning can still play, it’s almost disrespectful to ask him to take such a huge cut if you don’t plan on doing anything with the money you’re saving. It’s like saying “We don’t plan on doing anything with the money we’re taking from you, but you just didn’t play well enough to earn this.” … Let’s see if they’d still feel so ungrateful if they had someone like Brian Hoyer slinging the rock.

  14. Elway dived into that Manning deal as bad as Chicago did with Cutler’s new deal. Hey, that gives me an idea! Trade Cutler for Manning. Manning reunites with Fox, Cutler reunites with Denver! ….not. Just suck it up and bite the bullet.

  15. It just shows that Elway is about to mess it up even worse.

Peyton isn’t the QB he was, but he is alot better than Osweiler, and Denver doesn’t have any other options.

I don’t think that they are ready for a rebuild yet.

  16. Take Peyton out to Chicago, he can take another knee for John Fox in a Championship (playoff) game with 31 seconds left.

Imagine the glare you’d get if Fox told Elway to take s knee…Peyton probably said, “Okay”.

    Meglo-maniacal freak. Nice playoff record.

  17. That’s because the Broncos see what everybody else can…for the first half of the regular season he’s the best of all time, the greatest, the GOAT, blah blah blah, but the second half of the season and the playoffs is a different story. They know he’s probably done after this season and wanted to unload him to some QB desperate sucker so they could at least get something of value for him, but the other 31 teams have seen what we’ve all seen. I see the Broncos struggling this season.

  18. Lets see what happens next year when Brady isn’t playing with deflated balls.
    =================================
Didn’t Brady beat Colts in that game and had to come from behind in the 2nd half using properly inflated footballs?

Didn’t Brady play every game after that using properly inflated footballs? And didn’t he win most of those?

Didn’t Tom Brady beat the Seahawks using properly inflated footballs?

  19. As old as he is, there are still about 25 teams that would have signed him if he had walked.

  20. I’m hoping this ordeal motivates rather than demoralizes Manning.

Go out there, get your 4 Million in bonuses, and sip that iced tea next year.

  21. I find it funny that people are saying the Manning is the best quarterback to ever play yet he only has one Super Bowl ring… He is the biggest choke artist out there. Now if you were to say he is one of the greatest then you have a legitimate argument.

  22. They asked him to take one for the team except the only team Peyton cares about is Team Manning. He’ll put his name to anything you give him money for so of course he balked at a pay cut. And he didn’t even take a guaranteed pay cut, if the Broncos win AFCC he gets $2m back and if they win SB Peyton keeps all his money. …oh yeah, lol, he is taking a pay cut! I’m looking forward to watching him have a great September and October only to choke when it gets cold outside. He wouldn’t even have a Super Bowl if it weren’t for Rex Grossman. He’s a top 5 all time QB but will never be in the discussion for top 3. Choker!

  23. See Elway is torpedoing the season before it starts smh… He should be bowing down to Peyton each and everyday for bringing the Broncos back to relevance..

  24. manning is way overpaid based on his playoff wins.
Joe Flacco is way underpaid based on his playoff wins.

Flacco is the future and bronco’s fan will soon realize that after week one beat down!

  25. Wow lots of Cheatriot fans trolling on here today. Shouldn’t you be starting a GoFundMe page for Robert Kraft?

  26. Manning was DUMB to take the paycut. Even if he is older and not as good, he is still a top teir QB.

Other teams that are “Just a QB away” would be willing to pay that his original price. Also, the Broncos are further away from a SB, than when they signed Manning a couple years ago.

They just got rid of the entire coaching staff, not a sign of “win now”

  27. 1) Denver is paying way to much for a QB that is way past his prime and is standing on the edge of a huge drop off, and to top it off no one there to step in and take his place when he does call it quits. 2) As much as Payton says he is a team player and wants to win he sure wouldn’t take a paycut so the team could afford to put some solid weapons around him on both sides of the ball. Lets see if Payton can win the big one all by himself.

  28. They should have released him. He can’t play anymore and it was apparent the last 8 games of the year. The best thing for the Broncos would be to move on.

  29. All I want to know is if that is Raiders owner Mark Davis who is getting his hair cut in that picture.

  30. start up the “manning can’t throw, they only won because of their defense and kicker” reasoning because Elway is going send another playoff winner packing.

So you’re saying, take a little air out and you’re the greatest qb of all-time? Also ignoring the fact he dissected the LoB with regulation footballs in the Super Bowl, unlike Pey Pey who peed down his leg against the same team on the same stage.

  33. Tied with Jimmy Garoppolo for super bowl wins. Needed Reche Caldwell to drop a pass in the title game to even get to the SB.

    Yeah.. right.
    1) Jimmy Garoppolo did not PLAY in a superbowl
    2) Jimmy Garoppolo did not play in or win any regular season and playoff games resulting in his team GETTING to (multiple) superbowls.

I can’t believe the stupid, meaningless “stats” people try to use to make an idiotic point.

    You know the old saying..
    Three kinds of lies…
    Lies, Damn Lies, and Statistics…

  34. Tied with Jimmy Garoppolo for super bowl wins. Needed Reche Caldwell to drop a pass in the title game to even get to the SB.

Oh… and BTW… TB didn’t “need” a defensive player to make a PICK on the 1 yard line to preserve a victory for the PATS in the last go-round?

  35. Call tom a cheater if you will, do not act like Manning is worth $10M more. If you think he is, enjoy watching Tom beat people with normal inflated footballs. You already know it’s coming. And while he keeps winning, keep in mind he is half the price of that schmoe, only capable of beating the jelly arm possessed by the almighty Rex Grossman.

  36. “While he may not be the quarterback he once was, he’s still Peyton Manning.”

What does that even mean? If he’s not the qb he once was, then the name on the back of his jersey doesn’t matter once the ball is in play.

What does the boy and barbershop have to do with Manning?

    ——————————————————-
Um, because the article is about Manning being asked to take a (pay) cut.

    I don’t think it’s a huge leap.

  39. Peyton can’t win the big one all by himself, as he simply doesn’t have the physical skills anymore. You can see that in his wobbly passes that don’t quite reach the receiver on deep balls. He obviously wants to keep playing, no matter what, which answers the question of why he was willing to take any pay cut at all. But he’s clearly at the end of his career, trying to squeeze out one more championship season. The only way that can happen is if he has a superior team around him. Are the Broncos that team? We’ll see.

  40. He has SO much money already from past salary and endorsements. Why not take the larger pay cut and let the team use it to make his surrounding cast better?

  41. Lets see what happens next year when Brady isn’t playing with deflated balls.

Didn’t Brady beat Colts in that game and had to come from behind in the 2nd half using properly inflated footballs?

Yes, he beat the Colts. But no there was no comeback, that game was over in the first half pretty much.

Didn’t Brady play every game after that using properly inflated footballs? And didn’t he win most of those?
There was one more game. And yes he won it.

Didn’t Tom Brady beat the Seahawks using properly inflated footballs?
Yes that was the one game left that was referred to above.

    …………….

If you were a “true fan” you would know Garropolo played against the Bills in a week 17 Patriots loss. You call someone idiotic because they threw a stat out there you thought was meaningless (it is) but you yourself don’t know what you’re talking about. I bet the Pats backup QB also had value in practice simulating looks of that weeks opponent. Did he play in the games, no he did not. But all backup qb’s have value on every team. All I’m saying is know your stuff before you start slandering…

  43. How much money went to manning under the table? It’s the #broncosway
    ——————————————————–
Not as much money as Brady secretely receives on his Brazilian accounts I bet.

  44. The New England Patriots are the greatest dynasty in NFL history and everyone knows it, especially the haters. No has ever won for this long, and Belichick is still only 61 years old. He has another 20 years of coaching ahead of him. And now Brady will be a legend for taking down a fraud commissioner. This is too good to make up.

  45. Nine one-and-dones in the playoffs.

    Nine.

The next closest QB in the modern era has 4.

  46. Would not be surprised if he goes for 4,000 yds/35 TD’s/10 INTs this year and the Broncos win the division.

Also would not be surprised if he goes for 3,500 yds/25 TD’s/20 INTs and the Broncos go 8 – 8 or worse.

The question is – which is more likely at this stage for Peyton?

  47. The fact is that Elway took a huge chance and ended up crapping his pants.

So many people called him great for making the move to get Manning, but now they are completely screwed for many years to come.

    What’s so great about that?

  48. Probably mistook him for Eli. Or Jay Cutler. That kind of thing happens in states where weed is legalized.

  49. It was nice of Peyton to take a cut of $4 million. He certainly could have told the Broncos to shove it, its not like they were going to cut him and it doesn’t sound like anyone was interested in trading for him at his current salary.

Well, it took a fair amount of time from Elway to Manning (unless you want to count Jake Plummer into the equation) one thing IS FOR CERTAIN we will have one before the Browns do!

  51. PLEASE tell me Peyton got a bowl cut too. I want to see John Denver play QB for the Broncos. With that 5-head he’d look like Frankenstein.

  52. “This would have happened to Brady last year as well if it weren’t for delfating balls. Deflating balls has helped Brady avoid this problem. Lets see what happens next year when Brady isn’t playing with deflated balls.”

    28-24
Biggest deficit ever in a 4th qtr.
    Against this generations best defense
And here’s the kicker….with the most perfectly inflated balls in NFL history.

He did what Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, and Drew Bree’s failed to do and that was beat the best defense of this generation. That was Bradys greatest performance on the biggest stage of them all against the defending super bowl champs. Check Mate friend.

  53. Odd the comments about how he wasn’t the QB he once was when it was in 2014 where he set those records and even last year before he got injured he was having a huge year and still just missed out on 40 TD passes.

  54. I have a feeling all these Pats fans are going to moan for Revis in their sleep.

Would have been better off letting McCourty walk and paying Revis.

  55. Fired the entire coaching staff, hired a coach with a dominant run-first philosophy, asked Manning for a $10m paycut and (allegedly) tried to trade him.

It sure sounds as though they think Manning might actually be done and not just suffering from a quad injury.

  56. Asking him to take a $10 mil cut is not amazing – no matter how much a cut he took he’s not worth the money they pay him. His fast ball is gone and he’s a year older and that much more vulnerable to a good hit that will put him in a wheelchair.

He should hang it up but he can’t, and that means that he joins a sad club – once great players whose best days are further and further behind them but refuse to acknowledge it.

  57. If I’m Manning I say show me the money or screw you, he has records, SB, and basically everything a great career needs there is nothing that Broncos have for leverage.

  58. The New England Patriots are the greatest dynasty in NFL history and everyone knows it, especially the haters. No has ever won for this long, and Belichick is still only 61 years old. Except he will more than likely still be suspended for 4 games, with Goodell not going anywhere.

And I doubt BB is coaching at 81.

And this is a thread on Peyton Manning.

Let’s see what happened last year. He destroyed the Colts even more, after the refs added some air to the footballs at halftime of the AFCCG.

Oh yeah, he also won the Super Bowl, with presumably properly inflated footballs, though it’s hard to know if the refs screwed those up as well.

  62. About time Manning took less money, his whole career he has taken the max possible and put his team in a tough salary cap situation….he is a me me type of guy….look at Brady he has taken less money with every contract he’s signed…screw Payton, he will never have more than 1 SB because of it…..

  63. The Broncos made a good run at it, but this thing is over.

I remember all the mental lightweights hooting about stealing Welker, it was gonna be great blah blah blah best offense ever blah blah blah.

Then the Pats win the Super Bowl after Denver gets eviscerated in one.

    I love this.

  64. “Xavier179 I am unsure why Peyton Manning is considered an “elite” quarterback.
His brother Eli has won two Super Bowls and so has Big Ben, but neither of those two are considered elite.
Peyton Manning, Brees and Rodgers are all considered elite, but only have one title each.”
    ===================================================

Uh maybe because a QB can only do so much. He doesn’t block or catch or kick or cover it play defense. I’ve heard that football is considered a TEAM game!

  65. This is not a good look for John Elway…WoW
I know he can’t play forever, but this has put a ding on their relationship.

This has to be pretty insulting to Peyton, and rightfully so… Bad Move Elway

  66. The current Broncos team is nothing more than a self-assemble BBQ grill with 150 nuts & bolts in a plastic bag with instructions in Chinese. It was publicly reported when Manning took the pay-cut he agreed , but only with a no-trade clause.

Peyton is an all-time great but he should have retired.Win or lose I am a Broncos’ fan. I would be fine if they go 9-7. I cannot understand why Elway and Kubiak are giggling like school girls because they have the secret sauce to a zone running scheme-they don’t. 31 other DC’s have seen it before.

  67. While he may not be the quarterback he once was ??

Since when ?? He was elite last year.

Denver has screwed this up just like they did John Fox.

  68. Peyton Manning makes all his money on endorsements. If he were to win another super bowl, at his age, and with a second team, he’d make over $100 million a year in endorsements. QBs with clean images that win super bowls can make 10 times their salary on endorsements. Because of the salary cap, guys like Manning could actually end up with a lot more money if they take less from their team. A lot more.

  69. Manning sees himself like Johnny Unitas!! (trying to regain his job from Earl Morrall)

Elway sees the surgically repaired Peyton tap dancing while singing, “Puttin on the Ritz.”

  70. Teams over pay QB’s that are jokes (Newton, Kraperneck, RGme! Big Money!! Manning in a wheel chair is still better then those 3! They couldn’t even carry his jock strap! No one says anything about that! I wonder why?

  71. One thing is for sure from reading through these comments…..Pats fans are still obsessed with Manning.

The fact that Manning will be starting opening day and Brady won’t must be bothering them.

Welcome to the Garrapalo Era Pats fans.

  72. The person i feel bad for is Brock Osweiller. He’s been talked up by that organization as a starting caliber QB who would sit behind Manning a year or 2 to learn before taking over.

Three year’s later Manning is still hanging on by the skin of his teeth and pundits are lamenting the Broncos prospects after Manning and trashing Brock because he is an unknown.

When you are Manning’s understudy you do not get practice time with the ones, nor does he mentor you, nor does he come out of a game unless it’s 100-0.

You are assumed to be garbage by the media because he is Peyton Manning and you are not.

  73. John Elway knows Peyton Manning has passed his prime. The Broncos simply don’t want to pay him tons of money for his upcoming decline.

The Raiders will win the AFC West 2015.
