Pouncey brothers say they’re trying to bolster their reputations

Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey and Dolphins center Mike Pouncey are identical twin brothers who have a reputation as good players on the field, but not quite as great a reputation off the field.

There was their support for Aaron Hernandez, their college teammate-turned-murderer. There was the time they were accused of beating someone up at their birthday party, although no charges were filed. There was Mike’s involvement in the Dolphins bullying scandal.

But the Pounceys say they’ve learned from past mistakes and are working on improving their public images.

“The world has changed so much that the public eye is everything,” Mike Pouncey told the Ledger. “It’s perception over reality. We know that you’ve got to do the things right on and off the football field, and we learned over the course of our careers to do that now. We’re just glad to be positive role models in our community.”

Added Maurkice Pouncey, “We made some mistakes in the past and we learned from them,. I’m glad they happened because you always got to learn in life. We were young … then, but we’re grown up and trying to be the positive role models — something for these kids back in Lakeland to look up to — and it means a lot to us. Anytime we did get in trouble in the past, it hit us in the heart. We learned the hard way.”

The criticism the Pounceys have received is legitimate: They have, at times, acted like jerks. But they seem sincere in wanting to change not just their images but their actions. Good for them.

  1. Perception over reality? But the reality is that you’re both a couple of punks. What we perceive is actually the truth. When you can accept that, then maybe you can really change.

  2. Mike Pouncey has excelled in his Miami Dolphin community commitment over the past year. He is now a bona fide leader on the team on and off the field. Great to see. Expect a big year from the big guy who now goes back to playing center.

  3. Actions speak louder than words, so …..we shall see. I still have reservations about them but willing to give them that second chance.

  4. I’ll believe the Pouncey brothers are trying to bolster their reputations when Belichick comes out and says he’s going to stop cheating.

  5. That’s what scared ne about extending Mike. Hope he really is serious about this. Would be nice to not have to worry about him being a ticking time bomb.

  6. Maurkice is another athlete who shouldn’t be on Twitter.

He didn’t play the day we were Tebow’d out of the playoffs, so instead he spent the evening tweeting about how rich he is and how much us Steeler fans wish we had his life:

“Why would I be mad [about the loss]? I’m rich..play for the Steelers and have an awesome life!! Are you mad loser?”

“Season is over, time to move on and get better! What do you do for a living besides bother me?”

“Dude, you have six followers! No one cares what you have to say!! Can you see that!”

  7. The so called Miami bullying scandal was one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen. The attention seeking opportunists who got their butts kicked at the Pouncey’s birthday couldn’t file charges because it’s all on video, showing it wasn’t the Pouncey’s. So they supported Hernandez, their good friend from college, early on in the legal process. Well whoopty do. They can be dumb for letting themselves get involved in these situations but, there are far dumber players in this league than the Pouncey brothers.

  8. The reason they want to change is they have realized that by being horses asses they are losing millions in endorsement money.

  9. Changing your image is quite the same as changing yourself. They seem to be starting off on a wrong path from the beginning. Their images will improve with their behavior, not with managing their oversized mouths.

  10. They should just hope they get traded to the Patriots so the Media will treat him like an international playboy Gronkowski instead of a punk.

    Different Rules,
    T-Sizzle

PS Lets hope they also don’t get traded to Cleveland as that would be worse.

Fans with even less integrity supporting their actions is an equal part of the problem.

  12. Best of luck with that, Pounceys…

You’ve got a lot of work in front of you.

  13. These guy aren’t serious about being role models.

They are serious about being seen and paid like role models.

So far, they are the only ones who really think they are.

  14. These guys are 2 of the top 5 Centers in the NFL… Stop with all the hating on these guys. They made some mistakes in their EARLY 20s!!!
Oh let me guess none of you haters ever made mistakes at that age??
Try being a multi millionaire at that age and then tell me you wouldn’t make a few bonehead decisions.
Bottom line is they haven’t committed some of these heinous crimes and acts so stop treating them like they have.

  15. The Pouncey’s are pond scum to the core. That’s the perception and the reality. One or both of them will be in prison before their lives are over.

Lol. Supporting comments from a Steelers fan and a Phins fan.

    Color me unsurprised.

Can’t separate football value from personal behaviour.

OK Biff, aside from wearing stupid hats somebody gave them, and being falsely accused of a crime they didn’t commit, exactly what have they done that even comes close to bad behavior?

That goes for all you haters, tell me what they’ve done to upset your sensitivity. They are obviously very good players or you would even be paying attention.

  17. Those here hate Mike because they seem him game day taking out their teams DB’s downfield.

  18. good ole jwoodchipper,

Two despicable humans playing for two despicable franchises on the decline.
    ——————–
Coming from a fan of a team that is the very definition of “decline”. Ironic isn’t it.

  20. Steelers’ fans have no qualms lying about Ray Lewis but when one or more of their own is a violent criminal, CRICKETS. LOL.

Ok well, lets just start with one shall we?

What you try to diminish as “wearing a stupid hat” (nice effort to make it seem like a harmless prank BTW. I guess the KKK just wear stupid hats huh) was actually public, ignorant, and insensitive support of a serial killer.

He may have yet been to trial and they may have thought they were exercising free speech, but they stated Hernandez was innocent when by then he had at the very least destroyed evidence, obstructed justice and been strongly linked to the crime scene. It was just a dumb stunt on every level.

I also shouldn’t have to point out to you that even the Pounceys, in their misguided and roundabout way, are admitting to bad behaviour, and Maurkice eventually apologised for the hat wearing, which makes your request to have the behaviour identified for you seem rather illogical.

I’m not going to even mention whatever crimes they may have committed themselves, because, as you know, if no charges are ever laid, there hasn’t been a crime. That never happens.

The Tebow troll is up to his usual distorting tricks again. The Steelers Pouncey is not a convicted felon like Ray Lewis…..no matter how the troll tries to spin it Lewis is a felon …Pouncey is not…..yet?

  23. “The world has changed so much that the public eye is everything”

As if blaming social media for your problems is going to help your cause. Eyeroll.

  24. With Big Ben and Pouncy, Steelers prove they have no standards. None.

  25. I know that most NFL lineman have a position fine or something like that. I wonder how much these two knuckleheads (twins ) are on the hook for? Tropical island anyone?

  28. So what specifically are they going to do to rehabilitate their reputation? Charities? Youth programs? Community work? donations? What?

Or I guess it just means they’ll try not to say or do something stupid.
