Obama Administration: Team should change name before returning to D.C.

Getty Images

If Dan Snyder wants to move his team back from Maryland and into the District of Columbia, the Obama Administration says it should change its name first.

The Washington Post reports that Interior Secretary Sally Jewell told D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser that the National Park Service won’t accommodate construction of a new stadium on the site of the team’s old venue, RFK Stadium, unless the team changes its name.

Mayor Bowser wants to bring the team back to D.C., and Snyder has indicated that he’d like such a move as well. But Jewell, who as Secretary of the Interior oversees the federal land, has said that calling a team the “Redskins” is no more appropriate than calling a team the “Blackskins,” “Brownskins” or “Whiteskins,” and as a result the federal government couldn’t support such a move.

This is not the first time the federal government has pressured the team. In 1961, when Washington was the NFL’s last all-white team, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy told owner George Preston Marshall that the federal government would revoke his lease on D.C. Stadium unless he signed a black player. Marshall acquiesced and was allowed to keep his team at the site that now bears Kennedy’s name.

  1. Redskins are NEVER coming back to DC as anything other than the Washington Redskins. And that’s the bottom line. The Obama Administration should go back to doing what it does best – capitulating to rogue nations.

  2. How about the “Rebels”? That would seem appropriate at this time in being politically incorrect.

  3. So funny. I love seeing them having to fight this over and over. It’s like a Twilight Zone episode.

  4. I supported the name change until I realized how uncontrollable the PC garbage is. Trumps clothing was pulled from Macys because of comments about immigration? Are you kidding me?

    Hey – its sunny outside today – Blaming Obama for that too???? Bet your knuckles scrape the ground when you walk….

  6. God as a taxpayer I’d hoped the govt had more important things to do with their time than to get involved with this nonsense…but I guess I was wrong.

  7. My answer would be that it’s DC’s loss of revenue and jobs. Maryland will be just happy to keep collecting all the taxes and fees for the Redskins playing in their state.
    Sometimes you just have to point out the whole ‘cutting off your nose to spite your face’ thing.
    BTW: I can’t stand this new era of political correctness police.

  8. As a skins fan, if “redskins” is overtly offensive to Native Americans then it should be changed. Other than the Oneida group complaining I rarely see much offense. At what point do we actually speak to native americans and find out what they think, through a real process. If the overwhelming majority says change it, then it should be gone. If they don’t want it to change, end this. How do we get to that point?

  9. Good president, great man. Always tries to do the right thing-here included.

  10. Please do us a favor Barry and just golf horribly for the rest of your failed time in office.

    3.
    a light, fast warship, aircraft, etc., used in such a raid.

    ^glad none of them are sensitive to our team name and logo.

  12. I like the name Redskins. Like anything else, if it offends people then it’s their choice to ignore it. Most of the people it offends do not even like the game of football. I honestly do not see what the big deal is in the name of a football team.

  13. How about Washington Wigglers? And their mascots could be those blow-up things you see flapping (wiggling!) around at used car lots.

    It would make everyone happy to cheer for the Washington Wigglers!

  14. What is funnier?

    -FedEx Field is only 18 years old and replacement is being openly discussed?

    -The Government, not the free market, cares a hoot about this but not Braves, Blackhawks, Indians, Seminoles or others?

    -The Redskins are so bad will it matter what they are called?

    I wonder if Danny will just pull a Cleveland/Paul Brown and name it after himself. The Washington Snyders

  15. As a skins fan, if “redskins” is overtly offensive to Native Americans then it should be changed. However, other than the Oneida group complaining I rarely see much offense. 16. Can this guy focus on anything that is actually related to his job? So sick of him weighing in on things that have nothing to do with his job description. I don’t know, maybe we should be focusing on the Middle East a little more since what we’re doing ain’t working!

  17. Just what we need….more government.

    The greatest threat to this nation is the name of the football team

  18. If the team wants to change the name, fine, but I am 100% against this power hungry administration trying to bully them into it. The PC Police has gotten out of control in this country and needs to be stopped.

  19. Never a wrong time to do the right thing. Do the right thing or let the SCOTUS decide.

  26. People should get down on their knees and thank Tom Brady and Roger Goodell for the fact PFT and the country at large no longer care about what the Washington football team calls itself

  27. Seriously this PC nonsense is getting out of control. Why is the Obama administration even speaking about this?

  28. Everyone complaining about Obama talking about this rather than something more important – newsflash, the president is able to worry about more than one issue at a time and in fact probably has a thousand tiny issues like this on his plate every once in a while. All presidents do that.

    And you’d think, with how much you conservatives hate him, that you’d want him to NOT do anything major since you think he’s incompetent. So shouldn’t someone who isn’t a good president instead on the big things instead focus on small issues like the Redskins team name that don’t affect anything? This way he’s not doing major damage to the country.

    Yeah, that’s right, I just turned your argument around on you. Isn’t partisanship fun? /s

  29. In a move that will surprise absolutely no one, Donald Trump will publicly oppose the name change as part of his platform in his bid for the presidency.

  31. A little history lesson that seems somewhat apropos:

    “Redskins founder and owner George Preston Marshall was an open and unashamed racist, and kept the Redskins white long after the other teams had integrated. He openly admitted that his unwillingness to sign a black player was an effort to appeal to his mostly Southern fan base (they had long been the southernmost team in the league). The signing only came when Interior Secretary Stewart Udall issued an ultimatum to Marshall: sign a black player by the start of the 1962 season, or he would revoke the Redskins’ 30-year lease on D.C. Stadium (now Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium).”

    Source: Wikipedia

  32. “Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy told owner George Preston Marshall that the federal government would revoke his lease on D.C. Stadium unless he signed a black player. Marshall acquiesced and was allowed to keep his team at the site that now bears Kennedy’s name.”

    And that first black player? Hall of Famer Bobby Mitchell, by far one of the greatest Skins to ever wear the uniform. Makes you wonder how many HoFers they missed out on before that. George Preston Marshall was a fool.

  33. As a white dude, I’d wholeheartedly support a team called the “Whiteskins.” Let’s make this happen.

  34. Yes, because making this statement took so much time and is keeping the president from his other duties. I love all the people suffering from Obama Derangement Syndrome. It’s an endless supply of entertainment.

  35. I don’t believe that the current name is any more “offensive” than the “Celtics” or “Fighting Irish” are to my ancestors. I hope the latter two never change! I personally love the Irish affiliation.

    That said, Washington could be the “Warriors” (and keep their colors and history). My HS was the Warriors, owing to the Iroquois tribes of Upstate NY. American Indian imagery and likeness abound on various institutions and landmarks and are not disparaging insofar as I can tell. At least they don’t have that connotation.

    These team names are not necessarily derogatory. Let’s not strike all allusions to the past just to satisfy the PC crowd who will NEVER be appeased.

  36. How about the Washington LGBT&C-PC and they can be like the Harlem Globetrotters are for basketball. They can have people from all those groups, women etc to satisfy everything/everyone in those groups and that can be the dumping ground for the NFL

  37. “Stand tall, Snyder.”

    He’s been wanting to do that since he was a kid. If only it were physically possible.

  38. We certainly cannot ask Obama’s hometown Chicago Blackhawks to change their name!
    And think about it our federal government, which has “Tomahawk” cruise missiles, “Apache,” “Blackhawk,” “Kiowa,” and “Lakota” helicopters, and used the name “Geronimo” in the Obama ordered attack that killed Osama bin Laden, objects to the name of the Washington Redskins. Maybe if the ‘skins were winning.

  39. The height of hypocrisy occurred last year in Minneapolis where Minnesotans protested the name “Redskins” when they played the “Vikings”

  40. …ahh..the small window of time between V. OTA’s & mini-camp….we gotta to have something to fill the internet, TV & newspapers…..by the end of July we can focus on FOOTBALL ! ( and just to offend the folks that are offended by the name). Hail to the Redskins !!!!!!!!!

  41. Vikesrule

    Drugs are a heck of a drug aren’t they. Btw I’m glad your happy the government is going to try to force a team to change its name. Yoy realize Vikings would be high on the list as its rumored they were the true first whites to come to America and rape and pillage the native americans. And they have a history of raping and pillaging villages. So keep rooting for a name change

  44. How about the free market determines if people support the name? If they don’t they will stop spending money on the merchandise etc etc. See I just solved the issue

  45. I have a suggestion for a new name for the team:

    The London Redcoats

    Washington doesn’t deserve a team.

  46. redskin:
    noun, Older Slang: Disparaging and Offensive.

    1.

    a contemptuous term used to refer to a North American Indian.

    Origin of redskin Expand

    70
    ?1760-70; red1+ skin; probably loan translation of French peau rouge, itself translated from an American Indian term

    Usage note Expand

    The date and origin of this term is in dispute. Evidence seems to show that in the 1760s, French colonists in the Mississippi Valley translated a Native American spoken term into the French language as peau rouge, which was then translated into English as redskin. Through the early part of the 19th century, American Indians continued to use their native word self-referentially, and it was translated into spoken and written English as redskin with no derogatory connotations, even as a term of respect. However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, within the historical context of white-Indian hostilities, use of the term redskin was associated with attitudes of contempt and condescension. By the 1960s, redskin had declined in use; because of heightened cultural sensitivities, it was perceived as offensive. Yet use of the term survives in the names of some sports teams
    ———————————————
    Times change, the meaning of words change too. Societies change. Bigots? They never change.

  47. I don’t believe federal land – OUR LAND – should be used for any sports team, regardless of name. I’m not even going to comment about the Redskins name being appropriate or inappropriate. Our land shouldn’t be handed over to billionaire sports owners. Let Snyder buy his own piece of land and build a stadium. I hate that so many localities give in to the NFL’s stadium money extortion racket and I’d hate it worse if it was my federal government doing it.

  48. Question: If there were an expansion team and one of the proposed names was “Redskins” how fast do you think the NFL and owners would laugh out of the room who proposed it?

    I’m fine with names like the “Chiefs,” “Seminoles” and “Blackhawks” as they seem to be honoring the people they are nicknamed after. “Redskins” is derogatory and there’s no way around it. Even the owner who chose the name did so because he knew it was a demeaning term.

    So I ask again: how quickly would the name “Redskins” be shot down if it was proposed for a franchise in 2015?

  49. Those that would prefer that Obama not get involved should consider that the statement by the administration is the best way to not get involved. Because the Federal government owns the land that the stadium is built upon, the National Park Service will be a part of negotiations and thus involved. The administration’s statement effectively delays the negotiations process until after Obama is out of office. You’re getting what you want.

  50. It is a private Business, Leave them alone.

  52. The logo is awesome. Looks like it’s a proud, wise old warrior who kicks butt. If that’s an offensive logo, then so is the Vikings logo.

  53. How about the Washington 1st Amendments
    Or Washington and just have a black censor bar on their helmets and uniforms.

  54. Agreed Coloradical-

    Would love if they used the opportunity of a new stadium to also include a giant Native American museum as a part of the structure where the fans can enjoy and learn about the history of the people their favorite team is named after.

    I love how FSU handled it…actually meeting with the Seminole tribe and getting input on everything from the colors, to the uniform designs, to the mascot

  55. I wouldn’t like a team called the blackskins or negros, so I’d be a hypocrite to support any team use of other ethnic identities or epithets.

    No surprise the the overwhelming majority of people that oppose the name change are white.

  56. Watching all these delusional Washington fans get their panties in a wad about the name of the team absolutely made my day. Guess what? The name is going to change eventually. Whether its under Snyders watch, or part of the NFLs conditions when the team is sold, IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN. I hope it ruins each one of your days when it does.

  57. It will be a far different political landscape when and if the Redskins return to D.C. The Obama administration is still dangerous, but hopefully by the time Snyder brings the Redskins back the stories will be about the truth. The Obama administration will just be considered a skid mark on the underwear of our country.

  58. In honor of big government, no individual liberties Obama, change the name to the Washington Parasites.

  59. How about just naming the team The Washington Whiteskins and have a picture of some white dude on it

    I wouldn’t be offended at all.

    19 trillion huh? How about 1.224 trillion? Total foreign debt is around 6 trillion. Not play money by any standard but hardly the pure fiction used here. Why is it Obama haters can never get their facts straight? Is it because facts prove that Obama has been one of the best presidents and history will someday show it. Had he not been a man of color, well, that goes without saying. Coincidence that those wanting to keep the Washington football team name are also Obama bashers? Hardly.

There is the tomahawk (sp) motion the fans use, the chant, the tomahawk stickers that are on the players helmets. There are so many other instances that I could mention…The Redskins do not do any of this but yet they are the only ones being talked about. Florida State was the national champions in football not too long back. No one brought this up!! Please, someone who wants the name changed, provide some kind of proof to corroborate your claims. There is no proof the the term “redskin” came from scalping native americans or whatever is being claimed. Journalists these day just engage in what is essentially a contest to see who can be the most “progressive” or “tolerant” and don’t even do any research on their own. Just jumping on the bandwagon to sound holier than thou leaving any objectivity they had long behind.

  89. Anyone read more than the headline? Obama, as much I don’t like his politics, isn’t even involved.

    It is someone in the Department of Interior whose job it is to authorize use of park service land. And she’s got responsibility over Native American relations too. She’s doing her job!!!

    Snyder wants to take a enterprise mired in an offensive name controversy and build a monument to in on Federal land. The next administration won’t be any different.

    Gees, you write an article with Obama AND the Redskins and everyone comes out to play.

  90. Move to Virginia…stay out of DC! And IMODAN, yes words do change their meaning…today the word Redskins means : A football team. I’ve never in my life heard someone speak negatively about native American’s and refer to them as “redskins”.

    Call a Kansas Citian a “chief” and you’ll get a funny look.

    Call one a “redskin”. Go ahead, do it.

    The PFF Fundie brigade already knows this, yet every Washington Football thread they are goaded into their same, tired, “BUT MUH FRIST MENDMENTS” and “PC RUNS AMOK LIKE HITLER” comments with tedious regularity. Its like a dog whistle for conservative denialism.

  98. So lets see …Indians, Braves, Chiefs, Blackhawks, Seminoles, are all Okay ?

    But Redskins is not okay?

    Not to mention 62 high schools in 22 states with that name including Red Mesa High in Arizona, located on a NAVAJO reservation, and where 99.3 percent of its students are Native American!

    And of course the tomahawk chop is okay as well ?

    Anyone read more than the headline? Obama, as much I don’t like his politics, isn’t even involved.

    It is someone in the Department of Interior whose job it is to authorize use of park service land. And she’s got responsibility over Native American relations too. She’s doing her job!!!

    Snyder wants to take a enterprise mired in an offensive name controversy and build a monument to in on Federal land. The next administration won’t be any different.

    Gees, you write an article with Obama AND the Redskins and everyone comes out to play.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    This all day.

    Someone from the Department of the Interior does their job and suddenly the president doesn’t care about terrorism.

    Sounds like the “popular” sentiment is: dislike Obama, support the nickname, and be outraged that the Confederate battle flag can’t be flown on government property. Yeah, that doesn’t sound racist at all.

  100. The Obama Administration should work on cutting spending, and less government corruption…..
    leave the mascot of sports teams to their owners.

  101. I’d think Obama would address such issues that he can actually do something about. As President, he is referred to a Commander-in-CHIEF! I’d think he’d want to get rid of that racist term.

    ~~~~~
    What if the mascot of that sports team offends a part of the population and that sports team wants to build a stadium to revere the sports team on GOVERNMENT land.
    What if a neighbor wanted to erect statue that you could care less about personally but you know would offend your family. Should you stay out his business?
  103. Hard to believe, but this commentary is worse than the deflategate swill. Holy cow.
  104. This argument is NEVER going away until the name is changed. Shut up, and change the freaking name. President Lindsey Graham or President Trump won’t make this thing go away brainiacs.
  105. Another reason why Obama is,by far, our worst president ever. His constant stupid decisions.
  106. It’s a free market issue right? Snyder’s decision? But everyone gets an opinion. Free speech.
    If the press ask the President of the United States his opinion about this, he’s doing the right thing by saying what he believes. If you don’t like the question, blame the press. Ask the press why they aren’t focusing on more important issues.
    Heck, Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld are all wanted war criminals and the press never talks about that. Why not?
    I’m not a big fan of the name Tennessee Titans. Tennessee Crackers has a much better ring to it.
  107. Time to get rid of Democrats…We have to pay double for health insurance and we are more concerned about football helmets than our borders.
  108. Name a mascot that was named to disparage its namesake. You cannot can you. The whole problem with this is intent. There was no intent to disparage. It is meant to exemplify the greatness of Native Americans. yet the small amount of Native Americans think other wise. Maybe it is that small amount of people that should change their thinking. Hey a fork is a means to making fat people, should we banish the fork?
  109. Anyone else believe that in a few decades down the road, America will look back at this era and say: we should have stopped it back then…?
  110. Snyder doesn’t really want to go to DC anyway. He wants Virginia to build a new stadium – VA is far more likely to spend serious money courting the team than DC would. DC’s budget is controlled by Congress, and Congress doesn’t care a whit for the Redskins.
    Maryland should offer to build a new facility based on the condition that Snyder sell the team to somebody competent. That might actually get votes.
  111. “Name a mascot that was named to disparage its namesake. ”
    The Redskins.
    “You cannot can you.”
    Just did.
    “The whole problem with this is intent. There was no intent to disparage.”
    It’s a racist term. You’re not going to get anywhere pretending that it isn’t.
  112. As a mixed bag of ethnicity which includes a majority of Cherokee and Irish I have heard numerous racial slurs that I feel are more insulting than the name of a sports team.
    Should I be a Native American or an Irish American? Why is it African-American or Asian-American is more acceptable than Irish-American or European-American? Why is it that we are all not just Americans? If it is indeed a descent thing then I would say my Irish lineage is more recent than say the African-Americans of today so I am equally deserving as say the other ethnicities.
    I think if I was fully Native-American I would be upset at the status of things in America before being upset with a sports’ team name. Well and possibly that the Redskins have sucked as a franchise for quite awhile.
  113. Check out the US Debt Clock!
    And we are worried about flags and team names?
    Hope this comment does not get deleted.
  114. “Redskin” the movie came out in 1929.
    Team name changed to 1932
    Redskin was used as a derogatory term in the movie.
    Redskin was used as derogatory term all thru the 18th-19th century.
    Dictionary still defines the word as a derogatory term.
    Please change the name. We are better than that name.
    Still……HTTR
  115. NO, we are not BETTER then the name, The NAME is who we are and what we choose to be. ANY word in the english language can be used as a derogatory term if there is INTENT behind it. This is not one of those times. REDSKINS are an NFL team. Period.
    “WE WILL NEVER CHANGE THE NAME. NEVER”
  116. Equating all words with hate words is a poor argument. Words have meanings. I guess I can just start saying whatever I want now though.
    Shoelace ran up the moon biscuit and blue astronaut.
  117. This asininity will stop when Obama is out of office. However, the economy may have an even greater impact upon the National Football League and the Washington Redskins as a whole. The Bush, Clinton and Obama administrations are likely going to blamed for all bad economic decisions going back MANY decades. Forget Obama’s comments he will be dust in the wind as well as his words.
  118. I’m all for something that fits the DC culture if they change the name. Washington Liars or Washington Vote Panderers would be good.
  119. I will support my beloved team win or lose no matter what it is named. I’m one-eighth Cherokee, and the name does not offend me in the least. I do understand how some people might be offended. For instance, no team could get away with being called “The Blackskins” in this day and time. I’d like to see Snyder sell the team rather than have him stick around with the traditional name. He’s ruined my team regardless of its nickname!
  120. Its funny how many conservative white guys there are on this board. Who sits there and argues FOR racist names like the Redskins? The same idiots who love the confederate rag.
  121. Redskins fans are funny. Keep making your excuses. Snyder is going to cut a deal with the GOVT to change the name so he can get a free stadium.
  122. Indian tribes are only opposed to any business that they don’t own and aren’t making money from, claiming they insult their heritage and their elders. But the Indian tribes don’t seen to consider it an insult to their heritage and their elders when they are building modern casinos and resorts that they own and make millions every year from.
    Maybe a spokesperson for the Indian tribes can explain how the modern casinos and resorts honor their heritage and their elders but any business they don’t own is so insulting.
    Keep the Redskins. If you must change the name change it to the “Washington MoneyPimps” and you can hire the high class Washington escorts as the cheerleading corp.
  123. Who cares if they come back to DC… stay in Maryland or go to Richmond. It’s working out just fine that way. Or, just be ok with keeping them The Redskins and coming back to old RFK. Dan’s not changing the name ever so stop pipe dreaming and get over it already. DC officals and the PC wackos need to give up on a name change if they want the team back in DC… period. They want the team back then they need to make concession. Otherwise, Dan won’t care about being in DC. He’s doing just fine without them. Stay in Maryland or Richmond or even DC if he can keep the name… anywhere works as long as it’s the Redskins. #HTTR
  124. Now that the Obama Administration has defeated the Confederacy, sided with the Indians against the Cowboys, and given dudes the “right” to be “married” maybe they maybe work on the economy or ISIS?
  125. If it is not broken DON”T TRY & FIX IT.
    OBlama is all about CHANGE. Hitler was all about change and he called it the Final Solution.
    OBlama believes the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Definition of Marriage is broken and it is up to the Radical Left to fix it.
    We, as a nation, have come full circle back to 1776 and the need to RE-Declare our Independence.
    Join the Sons of Liberty and Rise UP Against the Tyranny.
  126. Concerning Our current Politics and Nazi Germany we can see a definite pattern, furthermore;
    The BIGGEST mistake America is making is they have bought into the BELIEF of “IT CAN”T HAPPEN to US”.
  127. The Confederate flag has nothing to do with the Redskins so please can it already. Can’t even make that comparison, especially since there are so many “Yankees” who live north of the mason dixon line who are Redskin fans. These PC wackos try and find anything to push their silly agendas.
  128. Obama also loves the FEMA prison camps set up in every state in the nation.
    But you say, “It could never happen here.”
    If we fail to learn from history, then history will repeat itself until we do.
    Who are the enemies of the ideologies of the radical left?
    Anyone who BELIEVES in the 1st & 2nd Amendments as the Foundation to all of our Constitutional Rights to Freedom.
  129. all of you people who think theres a PC problem don’t understand that this racist backward thinking country s just getting wiser. Redskins is racist, idiots.
  130. So if the ‘INTENT’ of the Washington Redskins is to denigrate the American Indian or to be racist, then the Players, Coaches & Owner end up denigtrating themselves as they parade around proudly wearing the name & logo.
    REALITY is that the American Indian typically has a slight reddish hue to their skin, thus the name Redskin. No different to a dear friend of mine who has very pale to almost glowing white skin. Thus we call him WHITEY. My last name is often misaligned and my friends called me COKER. Nothing wrong with fitting nicknames that are not verbal assaults against a person.
    TRUTH is that the Washington Redskins Players, Coaches & Owner are celebrating with our American Indians and lifting UP in support and praise that worthy name – Redskins.
    But leave it to Whining Self Righteous Crybaby Left Wing politicians with their anti-God, anti-Constitution agenda.
  131. I lived 30 miles from a Reservation, Winnebago Ne.
    The Government (WE) gave every Family a new home,
    They complained about them because they looked the same.
    Most are now rotting on their foundations from no Maintenance, I installed Cable/Satellite Dishes in them. They had the nerve to complain to me, they didn’t get FREE Government repairs on them!
    Now the Redskins name. It is useless to fight against it.
    It will only get worse. The less you have invested the less you care.
