Drew Brees thinks opposing defenses will have “too many things to think about”

AP

Saints quarterback Drew Brees said recently that the team has “all the pieces in place” to be the best team that he’s been on in New Orleans and he explained a bit more about why he feels that way on the offensive side of the ball during an appearance on ESPN Baton Rouge this week.

Brees acknowledged that the team is a bit shorter on familiar names than it has been in the last few years, but says that he thinks a few of them will become “household names” before too much longer. His reason for believing that is coach Sean Payton’s ability to build the offense around the players on hand and the more diverse group that the team has put together for the 2015 campaign.

“We look at our personnel and we say ‘How can we put our guys in the best positions to succeed according to their strengths?'” Brees said. “We’ve been a top-five rushing offense before. We’ve been able to hurt you down the field with our wideouts, we’ve been able to hurt you underneath with running backs and tight ends, so I feel like we have all those components. And when you have all those, you’re dangerous. You’re hard to defend. There’s just too many things to worry about.”

The Saints will need their young players to continue to thrive once they’re faced with actual opposition if they’re going to be dangerous, something that can’t be gauged until that opposition is on the other side of the field. There’s a way to go before we hit that point, but it seems Brees and company will be whiling away the hours in an optimistic mood about what’s to come.

  1. For the haters: Drew Brees is easily a Top 5 QB but not even among the Top 5 earners… He’s a future 1st ballot HOFer and well worth every single penny the Saints have given him… Brees even said he would restructure if asked to do so but the Saints declined…. Now I think I covered all the typical hater categories for Drew lol

  2. All teams have “all the pieces in place” to be an outstanding team in the offseason. Let’s see how those pieces look in October.

  3. He’s right. When the Saints are at their best, they spread the ball around. They’ve gotten away from that the last couple of years and went way too much to Graham and Sproles. They need to get back to making the defense defend every player and every blade of grass.

  4. Ummm, no they won’t Drew.

This is not the same team from the Superbowl run.

You lost your best target in Jimmy Graham.

    The O-line is still questionable.

Ryan and the defense still has plenty holes to fill..

The owners-family are in a court battle, which makes the players question the franchise stability.

You don’t have the same arm you did a couple years back.

Panthers win that division this year.

  5. I’m REALLY surprised he used that phrase after what his cheating Saints did to my Vikes the season when Favre used that phrase.

  6. Brett Favre said the pieces were in place for 2010.

Vikings went 6-10 and Favre’s career was ended.

Looking for the same out of Brees and the Saints.

  7. DB needs a bounce back year. I don’t see it with that roster or with that D.

Often times there is a symbiotic relationship between the defense/special teams and the rushing game. When Drew throws the ball 50 times a game that’s not good.

Look for him to chuck it around the field 45+ times a game…….

    7-9 Saints

  8. Saints fans are so predictable- “We will have the top offense, We don’t need Jimmy Graham, blah blah blah”. Let me break it down for you- A TRUE fan doesn’t gloat, they are optimistic but not arrogant. A TRUE fan doesn’t cheer on one of their top players and brag he is the best in the league at his position then claim he isn’t that good when he is traded. A TRUE fan should be humble about their team especially when it just came off a losing season.

  9. One less to think about with JG gone.

    Cooks could be very good.

    Colston gets the dropsies sometimes.

Not sold on Spiller as a Saint yet. PT was slow but with good hands. Ingram needs clean health.

Could go either way for the Saints. Defensive performance will probably shape their fortunes.

It’s just off season ego maintenance. Nothing wrong with that. Gotta believe you can at least win your division, or why play.

  10. “We’ve been able to hurt you down the field with our wideouts, we’ve been able to hurt you underneath with running backs and tight ends”

And we’ve been able to hurt you by putting a bounty on your knees.

  11. To those talking about the lack of Jimmy Graham, have you even bothered to look at who Brees has to chuck the pigskin to?

Colston: Not spectacular, but a damn good WR

Cooks: Had a poor rookie season that ended with a broken thumb, but he looked really good early on.

Watson: He’s not JG, but he’s a good TE. Never reached the elite level I thought he would, given his sub 4.5 speed and 48 on the wonderlic. I’m sure we all remember when he came from the furthest point on the field to tackle Champ Bailey at the one before the Broncos fell to the Steelers in the AFC championship game.

Spiller: They brought him in to be a change of pace back and a Sproles type receiver. If this works as planned, this should cause matchup problems.

No they don’t have a Dez, Julio, Demaryius, or Calvin and that’s ok. Payton’s offense doesn’t need super stars to tick. They’ll be just fine.

Nah, a true fan defends his team 100%… Saints fans are just simply responding to typical Saints hater comments…nothing to see here…that’s what success brings out…haters lol

I honestly cant name one starter on the Saints offense besides Brees

    —–

You must not watch much football.

    QB- Brees (probowler, HOFer)
RB- Ingram, Spiller, Robinson ( arguably the best RB tandem in the league)
WR- Colston (always underrated). Cooks (this guy will turn heads this year).
TE- Ben Watson & Josh Hill.. Very solid TE options
OL- Jahri Evans and Unger, both probowlers. Armstead and Strief are no slouches.

You can’t name a single player, but yet the Saints are still a top 5 offense EVERY SINGLE YEAR SINCE 2006.

We spread the ball around, always have. That’s why we don’t need Graham. This offensive machine won’t skip a beat without him.

  14. Also, a true (Seattle) fan doesn’t claim Jimmy is soft as Charmin tissue and then claim days later, after acquiring said player, that all of a sudden he’s the best TE and tough as nails because he’s with Seattle now lol……….

  15. LOL @ Seattle fans calling anyone arrogant… They’re the most arrogant fan base on the planet

  16. You people fail to acknowledge that Saints were a Top 5 offense every year since Brees and Payton came on board, well before anybody even knew Graham’s name. Only one year out of 9 we weren’t Top 5 and that year we were #6.

Brees is not in decline, don’t believe me, just look at his 2014 stats in comparison to his SB year.

Graham only accounted for 900 of Brees’ 4,952 yards last year, who do you think the other 4,052 yards went to? Players still on the team.

There were little to no big names before Jimmy came in too, and we still won the SB.

And how do you think Jimmy got to be a big name? Because the Saints made him one.

Saints will be just fine, remember I said that. We were #1 offense in 2014, even with losing season. We will be #1 in 2015 also, book it!!

  17. Cooks had a bad rookie season? Apparently you are just making stuff up.

He was leading all rookie WRs until he broke his thumb. Including Beckham.

Try looking up actual facts before posting.

  18. There was a time when Jimmy Graham could barely run a post route, now he’s a household name. How can anybody argue that Brees and the Saints offense made him out of nothing. We’ve gone from Deuce to PT to Ingram, from Bush to Sproles to Spiller, from Horn to Colston to Moore to Henderson to Meachem to Cooks, from Shockey to Graham to Hill, from Brown to Bushrod to Armstead, from Nicks and Evans to Evans and Unger, from Stinchcomb to Strief to Peat … and people still don’t understand that it’s Brees and Payton that make the offense work, not the other way around. You all must be a special kind of stupid.

  19. I dont know if anyone is a Brees ‘hater’ (I dont actually know anyone beyond grade school that still uses that term.)

I do think his arm strength has lost a lot of zip in recent years, and losing Graham doesn’t help in any way.

LOL @ Seattle fans calling anyone arrogant… They’re the most arrogant fan base on the planet

I’m not even a Hawks fan you schmuck. Oh and by the way sb44champs that SB was 6 years ago. Need to quit living in the past.

  21. I think what he’s trying to say is that the Saints lack starpower so they will be able to spread it around to whatever the defense is giving up. I mean what are you going to prepare to stop as a defensive coordinator playing against this team? There’s nothing that really scares you. You just line up and attack.

Sean Payton is great at putting players in positions to be successful and Drew Bree’s is great at getting the most out of what he has to work with. I’m sure they will be fine on offense, but when you lack that go to guy in tight games a lot of times you aren’t able to convert the big 3rd downs and a lot of times you end up kicking field goals. Makes it tough to put teams away.

  22. It seems that the majority of you are around the age of 5. If not then you too would realize that Brees and the Saints have had a Top 5 offensive ranking before JG even thought about putting on the pads while at the U. The addition of Spiller gives us that Sproles/Bush type of back that we were missing last year. I think Browner shored up the 2nd CB spot which was perhaps the hugest question mark going into the offseason but the majority of the questions about the team lie on the defensive side of the ball not on offense. Plus as I’ve said before JG was more of a hindrance than a solution. Drew tried to force it to him too many times instead taking the open underneath route or just spreading the ball around in general. I wouldn’t say that all the pieces are there due to the questions on defense of: Has our run defense improved? or, Where is the pass rush going to come from other than Galette? or, Can we actually tackle someone this year?

Other than that Vikings fans please keep sending us your tears we love them. All this crying 6 years later is almost better than the Lombardi Trophy you will never get.

This is not Detroit, man, this is the Super Bowl!

  23. Exactly what mdd913 said… just like Brady in NE, its all about Brees and Payton. As long as the O-line can protect them, they’ll make the rest of the skilled guys look like All Pros each and every year no matter who they are. I think they’ve more than proven that.

  24. I’m not even a Hawks fan you schmuck. Oh and by the way sb44champs that SB was 6 years ago. Need to quit living in the past.

Yes, we’ve tasted Drew’s tears twice now…first with BeastQuake, then again on our SB run. Glad you noticed.

  27. “We’ve been a top-five rushing offense before.”

Yea.. that one time they cracked the top five in TDs (never in yards) SIX seasons ago… might not want to count on that.

Sounds like Brees is trying to lay down some early excuses why his #s are going to plummet.

Then you must not follow football too closely. Let me guess, your favorite team is always the team that just won the Super Bowl. Do your friends always believe you’ve been rooting for the most recent Super Bowl winner since you were born?

  30. by looking at his stats and the fact that they have been a top 5 offense since 2006 , id say that he’s probably right .

  31. When yall posters say been a top five in offense … by what metric ? Yards a game or points or … ?
Because im not seeing it under “offense” … not even top 12 last year.

  32. Like many others have said, let’s hope that’s the case in November. Although he was and is a weapon, folks seem to forget that we won our super bowl without Jimmy Graham. I want to be optimistic but that defense still has NUMEROUS question marks.

You’re kidding, right? They were #1 last year in yards

    2014: 1
    2013: 4
    2012: 2
    2011: 1
    2010: 6
    2009: 1
    2008: 1
    2007: 4
    2006: 1

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Points win games, not yards. Can have 500 yards of offense in a game to the other teams 225 yards and lose on the scoreboard.

Yes, the Saints rack up yards… but let’s look at points scored as that determines whether a team wins or loses.

2014 9th in points per game (not bad really)
2013 10th in points per game
2012 3rd in points per game
2011 2nd in points per game
2010 11th in points per game

They won’t be in the top 5 in points per game this season either. Top 10 will be difficult for them honestly as they were 9th and 10th the past two seasons.

They will slide closer to the middle of the pack in terms of points per game this season.

    Let’s say 12th to 14th…

  35. Too many things to think about like –

i hope I don’t get injured against a sub 500 team like this?

why do we even have to play a team that was number 1 in yards in 2014…yet was sub 500 for the season?

I hope we get out of here in time to catch Jimmy Kimmel?

I hope playing a sub 500 team like this doesn’t throw us off the way a knuckleball pitcher does a team in baseball?

wonder if I’ll get sweat on my game jersey or be able to wear it again next week?

will they let me bring shrimp PoBoys down to the sidelines to snack on when we hang a double nickel on these guys?

Do people in New Orleans really pay money to watch these guys?

Next week the Saints! finally the equivalent of an off week

  36. Points win games, not yards. Can have 500 yards of offense in a game to the other teams 225 yards and lose on the scoreboard.

2014 9th in points per game (not bad really)
2013 10th in points per game
2012 3rd in points per game
2011 2nd in points per game
2010 11th in points per game

They won’t be in the top 5 in points per game this season either. Top 10 will be difficult for them honestly as they were 9th and 10th the past two seasons.

They will slide closer to the middle of the pack in terms of points per game this season.

    Let’s say 12th to 14th…

    ——————————————————-
I’m glad you brought that up. Points win games, but its what you have to get there. Here’s some stats for you (2014).

    Saints
    Points – 9th
    Yards – 1st
    Passing – 3rd
    Rushing – 13th

    Packers
    Points – 1st
    Yards – 6th
    Passing – 8th
    Rushing – 11th

    Seahawks
    Points – 10th
    Yards – 9th
Passing – 27th (yeah, they are really going to use Graham a lot!!)
    Rushing – 1st

But yet the Packers DID NOT make it to the SB, and the Seahawks did (ranking #10th in points by the way), and missed it by an interception.

It takes THE WHOLE TEAM. And the Saints have the Offense, that’s in the books and has been proven. If the Defense is shored up and even just middle of the pack (like it was the year they won the SB), we’ll be just fine.

    Without Graham…GEAUX SAINTS!!

  37. Hawks fans should just worry about their own team since they dropped the ball with that massive trade for a one-dimensional TE making $10,000,000 per year to take out on run downs…..not even an every down TE…LOLOL
