Report: Sheldon Richardson suspended for marijuana use

AP

The NFL announced Thursday that the Jets will open the season without defensive end Sheldon Richardson because Richardson has been suspended for four games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

The league does not disclose the specific violation, but Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that it is for marijuana use. Richardson issued a statement through the team when the suspension was announced and went on Twitter Thursday to offer further apologies for the suspension.

“I apologize for my mistake and for disappointing the people who mean everything to me,” Richardson wrote. “I vow to you, this will not happen again. My team will continue to push forward without me to start the season. I promise I will be there for them in every way that I can until I am able to return.”

It will be interesting to see if Richardson’s suspension impacts the Jets’ decision-making on the defensive line moving forward. Muhammad Wilkerson is in the final year of his rookie deal and stayed away from voluntary work this spring while trying to get a new one. Richardson has two year and a team option left on his deal and the Jets may warm to the idea of extending Wilkerson if the suspension gives them doubts about Richardson over the long term.

Richardson said last month that he thought Wilkerson was worth “Suh money.” His suspension may wind up pushing him closer to it.

  1. Brady gets four games for cheating the game,
Sheldon Richardson gets four games for smoking weed?

As a fan, I don’t care about Sheldon Richardson smokes week. I care a LOT about Tom Shady conspiring with ball boys to cheat.

  2. If Aaron Hernandez could chain smoke a massive quantity of marijuana through the season and know when to stop so his system was clean when he knew would be urine tests, how come some other players can’t? As a former medical personnel said during his trial, it’s not really a drug test, but “an intelligence test, because it’s once a year, and you know it’s coming”.

Michael David Smith, on this site on April 5, 2015, wrote “So if you’re an NFL player using recreational drugs, beating tests is easy, as long as you’re able to stop long enough to get the drugs out of your system. The policy is designed to catch those who have a drug problem so serious that they can’t or won’t stop even when they know the test is coming. Everyone else is free to use for most of the year.”

Clearly Sheldon Richardson miscalculated and wasn’t clean when he gave a sample.

It’s still against the law in most states. Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good rant.

  4. One source says it was marijuana. Big deal. If one source said it was PEDs I wouldn’t view that as 100% certain either. I have no idea why the players want the substance discovered hidden from the public. That just leads to unnecessary speculation from every fan…no matter what the player says.

Yes, it could be weed; yes it still could be PED’s. We’ll never know for certain unless the NFLPA’s desire for secrecy changes. Good bad because it leads many fans to wonder if it’s the worst (PED’s)

You know it’s been proven 100% beyond a reasonable doubt that the balls were never even deflated right???

OK just checking. I really wish people would actually read the report and follow up reports. Anyone who has knows for a fact that the Patriots footballs were never even deflated.

  6. This is silly. Marijuana is the best/healthiest pain reliever in the world. I guess the NFL would rather have players be abusing alcohol, since one of their biggest sponsors peddles that poison. Or maybe become a Vicodin addict. Because, hey, it’s legal. Nevermind that it’s extremely toxic, and weed is completely safe.

  7. A mistake is misspelling a word, like this oen.

Violating an agreed-upon rule is not a mistake; it’s a moronic move that jeopardizes your career. Stop making stupid apologies for something that’s not a mistake.

Also a mistake is forging an agreed-upon rule that makes it punishable to smoke pot.

  8. It’s just a bummer that weed can take up to two months to get out of your system while much more destructive substances like opioids and meth are out within a week. Substance testing for players not already in the program takes place from May thru July. If you stop smoking pot in early March and don’t get tested until late July, that’s almost half a year that you have to stay clean, so it’s not quite as easy as some people here are making it out to be.

  9. Funny, Woody pays up on Tampering, SRich immediately owns up on weed and Tom Brady deflates footballs during the AFC Championship game, goes underground, remains silent, doesn’t cooperate with investigators, and lawyers up. Nah, he’s gotta be innocent.

    Free Brady!! Barf

  10. No, well, I do not have a problem with pot being legalized, or players doing it in their off time. The only problem I have is the advantage or disadvantage a player has while on the field.

If it were totally legal and the player(s) got high before a game, it would affect the outcome of the game. It is the primary reason, although legal now in some states, it is not legal for players in that state to partake.

Simple rules, simple laws and for the money players make, you kind of expect players to walk the line. If someone were to say here take 14 million and do what you love but all you have to do is follow these rules. Well, I do not care how silly or how stupid the rules are, for 14 million I would wear panties over my head while out to dinner with my wife and kids.

When you roll the dice with a career you worked your entire life for; it says a lot about the type of person you really are.

  11. PATS fan who said deflateed balls were proven not to be deflated … you know what you are saying is proven 100% TO BE INACCURATE.
I actually have the wells report. It so silly to claim the balls werent tampered with. Like … fail a drug test kinda silly.

  12. “I apologize for my mistake and for disappointing the people who mean everything to me,” Richardson wrote. “I vow to you, this will not happen again. My team will continue to push forward without me to start the season. I promise I will be there for them in every way that I can until I am able to return.”

    and from Rolando McClain:

“I apologize to my family, the Cowboys organization, my teammates and Cowboys fans for my mistake,” McClain said. “I will not break the rules of my profession in the future, and I regret my error. I look forward to returning to the field on week 5, when I hope to help my team beat the Patriots.”

Pretty similar “apologies”. Do their lawyers share the same office or something? They must have a form letter for the “apology” template. No way either player wrote it himself. If they were truly sorry, they’d get up in front of the cameras and apologize without reading a pre-written statement.

  13. I’m only doing this because the moronic Jets Fans came to the Dolphins’ Dion Jordan PED Suspension stories…

HaHaHa! Double whammy for you guys… Suspended and now you have to pay Suh money to a guy that ain’t even close to Suh performance. Sucks doesn’t? What goes around -comes around. LOL!

You actually have the Wells report.. Really? How do you get that, you must be special. You do know there were other, unbiased, reports calling the Wells report garbage. You are aware that if you don’t record anything and can’t remember which gauge you used then there is no science to this at all. Any 2nd grade science teacher can tell you that.
