Damarious Randall locked in at cornerback, not safety, in Green Bay

Damarious Randall was viewed as the best coverage safety in this year’s NFL draft. The Packers, who took Randall in the first round, think he’s good enough in coverage to play cornerback.

Rob Demovsky of ESPN reports that the Packers are set on playing their first-round pick at cornerback. That’s where he’s been working at minicamp and Organized Team Activities, that’s where he’ll work in training camp and that’s where they want to see him on the field in the regular season.

The Packers like the safeties they have, with Morgan Burnett and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix starting and Micah Hyde and Sean Richardson both capable of playing well at safety as well. Randall has a better chance of getting on the field and making an impact at cornerback.

The Packers also spent their second-round pick on a cornerback, Quinten Rollins. That’s a lot of draft resources to put into one position, a strong sign that they’re seeking improvement at cornerback in Green Bay.

  1. It’s no surprise that a quality safety can play corner. The question is why take a kid who could be a stand out safety and turn him in to a so so corner?

I guess times are tough at corner in GB.

  2. Titled: how to ruin a promising young NFL player. He needs practice at the Safety position like all new players. When the season starts, he will be totally over-matched and confused at a new position. CB is extremely hard to learn with years playing it in college. Plus the other 4 Safety’s are getting valuable reps in Training Camp. Strange that the Packers are doing this.

  3. Green Bay will be in the super bowl. When you’re already a great team, and you draft two impact DBs, you improve. The slightest bit of improvement should be enough to bring another super bowl birth to Green Bay. Now whether or not they can beat the Colts is another story. They might need a couple more good DBs to do that. But it should be a great game.

  4. The coach at Arizona liked his best players in the defensive backfield to play Safety. When he transferred from JUCO he was actually a Corner, so the Packers are just moving him back to where he originally started.

  5. Dear Florio — why not make these football geniuses provide their real names in their posts. All this bull would go away from the site.

  6. The Packers lost two CBs in free agency, Tramon Williams and Davon House. They were both experienced and capable. In a passing league you have to have CBs, hence the investment of two early picks on corners. That was the one position where the depth they had made them vulnerable and could potentially cost them a Super Bowl. They have some other holes, but none so bad they cant patch things together for a Super Bowl run. They had to shore up the corner position. Lets see if it works out and if they regret passing on Texas DT Malcolm Brown who went to New England a couple picks later in a few years.

  7. See Sam Shields if you are worried about conversion. Whitt knows what he is doing. Yes, he doesn’t have Shield’s speed, but it will be fine. Look at Tramon, undrafted, unwanted to top tier. Trust in Whitt.

  8. Learn on the fly at one of the toughest positions in football? This should be good. Bridgewater, cutler and Stafford thank you.

  9. Packers win Super Bowl 1, 2, 45 and 50. Heck, 51 and 52 as well. Packers are due for another 3-peat, its happened twice before in our franchise history. Cheers to the haters! Go Pack Go!!!

  10. Trolls are out in force and the kid hasn’t played a down yet. Jimmysee, I like your idea. Every packers comment section is ruined by these fools.

  11. hey brewertown

what happened to SB 31 in New Orleans – did you forget that one?

further, the Packers have now enjoyed the greatest run of QB’s for 24 years – how many rings to show for it? 2 what a waste of talent!

  12. Me thinks it has to do with lack of speed. Apparently they found out he can’t cover faster receivers, thus was available to Ted in the first while 27 other teams passed him by.

  13. pkrlvr, you obviously are on the wrong site. This site is for real NFL fans that care about all games and all teams. You need to go to a Packer fool site where you can all hold hands and sing Packer songs. Where the front office and players can do no wrong. This is for the real world. if a any team screws up, its our responsibility to point it out.

  14. The question is: When will he get in trouble like the rest of the team this year?

  15. Ted Thompson relied on lessons he learned from Steve Martin’s bestseller — How I Turned a Million Dollars in Real Estate into Ten Thousand Dollars in Cash when he selected Randall in the 1st round of the 2015 draft.

  16. Anyone who has been paying any attention whatsoever already knew both their 1st and 2nd round picks were selected to be CBs.

  17. Another Packers corner to get roasted all over the field? Mark week 2 down as the Packers annual choke job against the Seahawks.

  18. Nobody knows the future. Who knows, maybe this guy is the next Dion Sanders.

However odds are that converting a college safety to NFL cornerback is not going to work. Especially with the steep learning curve at cornerback. Maybe that type of risk is best not used on a 1st round pick.

  19. The Packers already have the starting cb position covered with Heyward. These guys will get some duty playing in the dime. The Packers have the luxury of bringing them along slow unlike that sieve viking pass defense. By the way the Packer cb have the most int’s in the NFL since 2010.

  20. Most teams where scouting him as a corner. Just trying to fill the dead space for the season.

Most of the Packer fans here have been punted from the Main Scout site..

Bear in mind..Rodgers spots the rag tag Packer defense 2 touchdowns, so they will get more looks at ints…
The Vikings were 7th against the pass in 2014…Hardly a sieve…

Packers have won 18 Super Bowls?
    ///////////////////////////////////

No, of course not. It only seems like that many when comparing to zero.

  24. Didn’t Ronnie Lott play safety in college? And Eric Wright too. Wow. The 49ers drafted two college safeties and moved them to cornerback. How’d that end up. That was the year they won the first of four super bowls. Just a couple facts in case you were worried about moving safeties to CB. If they can play, they can play. These two guys can play.

  25. “a strong sign that they’re seeking improvement at cornerback in Green Bay.”

No, they lost 2 of their top 4 corners (one a starter) in free agency. They will be fine at CB, and have time to train these top 2 picks.

  26. It is not like he is going from Punter to CB. He played CB in junior college. College coach wanted the best DB on the team to play safety in his system.

Green bay doesn’t throw young players to the sharks. He will be fine.

  27. Randall play “safety” at ASU meaning he was the guy in the backfield who knew the defense and made the calls and played centerfield sometimes.

However, in their defense he was mostly used like an NFL slot corner against all these spread offenses in the college ranks. He’s a cover guy and also a guy who can play near the line of scrimmage tackle and blitz.

Trae Waynes can run fast in a straight line.

  28. The coach at Arizona liked his best players in the defensive backfield to play Safety. When he transferred from JUCO he was actually a Corner, so the Packers are just moving him back to where he originally started.

Facts just get in the way for some people.

  29. I’m pretty sure this was the plan when they drafted him. Why is this news?

  30. Hey big time “new Viking stadium tax payer” chiming in.
I hate to say this but i dont know how the my vikings will be able to stop this Packer team. The talent on this roster is unmatched
