Jason Pierre-Paul has burns, but his fingers remain intact

When the initial reports of Jason Pierre-Paul’s fireworks injury came out, there were few details beyond the term “severely injured.”

But while he has plenty of doctors visits in his future, it appears he may have escaped the worst of the damage.

According to  Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, some of the flesh on the Giants defensive ends’ hand was burned off his palm and fingers, but his fingers are intact. (Sorry if you were eating breakfast while reading this.)

While there was some speculation on the internet that he might have lost fingers or part of his hand, a Giants source told the Post those were “overblown.” We can only imagine what that same source said when Plaxico Burress shot himself in the leg.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported last night that the injury wasn’t career-threatening, and colleague Chris Mortensen followed that up by saying it “may not be game or season threatening either.”

Of course, massive burns, the kind that would result from an explosive device going off in one’s hand, are obviously still a serious issue. And that will likely have the Giants reviewing all their options with Pierre-Paul, who had yet to sign his $14.8 million franchise tender.

  1. Looks like he should have signed that tender a little earlier before acting like an idiot. Greed mixed with extreme stupidity is a bad combination.

  2. i guess he won’t be cold-tubbing anyone any time soon.

you can throw him in there with other giant bozos like lawrence taylor and plaxico.

  3. Even with very few details available can JPP be awarded the dumbest off season player award ? Not signing the tender & having this happen ? Wow.

  4. What???
    The press overblowing a story??!!
    Get outta town!!!
I would never have believed that even possible…. Oh the shock of it all to find out they got it wrong….I still just can’t comprehend how that happened… They’ve never done that before have they??

  5. By way of comparison, another guy in Fort Lauderdale lost his left hand at the wrist, from a firework malfunction (or brain malfunction).

Then, there was the guy who strapped a mortar to his head and lit it. He’s gone to the big fireworks show in the sky.

So, JPP was indeed “lucky”…not to be confused with smart.

  6. Wonder if he will get any suspensions for partaking in illegal activities if he was in NJ, and fireworks of ANY kind are illegal? Be interested to see how the league handles this latest incident of player stupidity.

  7. The blame lies entirely on JPP.
The Giants should NOT release him, instead they should double down and demand that he honor his contract.

Goodell, the NFL, and the Giants are NOT responsible for helping JPP recover. This is his own damn fault. He was off-the-clock when he did this, in fact he should be fined by the Giants for this.

  8. If Mort is reporting he might not even miss any games, my first reaction is he probably lost an arm. Cuz Mort is an idiot, and rarely correct! Is it all 10 fingers Mort, or just 9 of 10…?

  9. These celebrations of declaring our independence are offensive to the British. We should ban this mean-spirited tradition, beg their forgiveness, and label anyone who disagrees as racist.

  10. This reminds me of a 4th 31 years ago when a relatives kid decided to gut some fireworks and put the pile of black powder in a heavy glass ashtray the adults were using without anybody knowing,I butted my cigarette and the ashtray exploded underneath my right hand severely burning and removing some skin off my palm and four fingers,I recovered in about three weeks or so and was allowed to go back to work.

Yeah they all can’t be stand up guys like Aron Hernandez huh pats fan? Lol. Shut up

  12. The big question is, will he be arrested? Fireworks use in Florida isn’t a major crime – $1,000 or a year in prison, and I suspect he can plead out and pay what is pocket change to him. But wouldn’t the league have to suspend him for a game or two just send a message about how mind numbing dumb (as well as illegal) playing with fireworks is for its players?

  13. Is this a joke? His SEASON IS OVER!!
People that were at the hospital say he had no flesh!!! That does not grow back over night…
His career might even be over…
NY GIANTS OWNER MUST BE CELEBRATING ON HIS OWN THIS MORNING THEY DID NOT SIGN HIM FOR BIG BUCKS!!!!

How can you give him a fine? He has not signed a contract yet. They can pull the offer, but that’s it. Giants do that and he bolts to another team.

  16. People at the hospital aren’t allowed to say a damn thing, that whole HIPPA thing and all. Understand why what what people were saying isn’t possible to be said before playing chicken little.

  17. JPP – I love you, but as Redd Foxx would say, you are ‘One Big Dummy’.

Hope you learned your lesson, hope you are OK, and I hope you have since cancelled that day of Bungee Jumping and Sky-Diving.

  18. When will these rich morons realize that alcohol and ANYTHING that goes bang is a bad combination. Though we will never hear how much alcohol was involved, there is no doubt that alcohol, some sort of green leafy substance, a bunch of people and things that go bang. Sure does sound like a common thread amongst NFL players whose career is there bodies, lets drink, get high and play with things that can kill us at worse, maim us or cause us to lose our jobs.

  19. you can throw him in there with other giant bozos like lawrence taylor and plaxico.

Didn’t the cheater qb who we own jump off a cliff in some third world country without a hospital this offseason?

  20. Something tells me he signed his tender and the agent has already faxed it in this morning.

  21. I saw this at 10. Wasn’t 4th of July, one of our friends fathers had left over fireworks from the holiday. My buddy stole a few packs of firecrackers from his dad & brought them to the lake/park were we all used to hang out.

One of the kids decided blowing them off one at a time wasn’t enough of a explosion. He took 5 & twisted all the fuses together & lit it. Blew up in his hand before he could throw them. Lost the tip of his index finger & got 10 stitches at the top of his palm along with breaking his middle finger. That demonstration of stupidity along with power of explosives of any kind certainly cured me of ever being around backyard fireworks no matter how benign it all seems.

Playing with fireworks when you have a least 14m dollar one year deal waiting for you is, at minimum, careless immature behavior but after seeing JPP handle himself the last few years it seems more that he’s perpetually stupid.

  22. “Mort says that he lost 11 of 12 fingers”

Quite possibly the funniest comment of all time!

  23. What is in the water at the New York (FOOTBALL!) Giants stadium?

Let’s review what we know at this point, with accidents, stupidty or both:

    * Troy Archer
    * Lawrence Taylor (where do we start?)
    * Plaxico Burris (stuffed a gun in sweat pants)
    * Tiki Barber (wildly inflated, perhaps infected ego)
    * JP-P “Let’s blow up some stuff!”

(Didja see the fellow who literally blew himself up setting off fireworks on his head? Luckily for the NY (FOOTBALL!) GIANTS, he didn’t play football.

But what the heck is going on here? Lot’s of stupido!

Actually the guy who died from lighting fireworks off his head was from Maine but thanks for playing. Smh

  25. Let this be a lesson to all of you kids out there. Do not play with explosives (I had a feeling we would hear news like this, just glad it’s not a Steeler)

  26. Fireworks are for morons….oh look, pretty lights. And they are loud too…..Oohhh Aaahhh. Ddduuuhhh

This is the kind of thing we need to stop. Have an agenda, make unsubstantiated assumptions, act as if they are true and finish the narrative casting aspersions. It’s a monkey see monkey do mentality people get from partisan websites. Thoughtless and devoid of common sense, these things don’t sway anyone, rather they polarize.

All the sudden this guy paints Paul as a pot smoking alcoholic who is into self destructive behavior. What’s more likely is he was a guy celebrating like many others, who was the victim of a quick firing fuse. Accidents actually happen to people who you may not root for.

  28. Fireworks are simple.

    1. Prep them by making sure the fuses are extended and easy to light.

    2. Make sure you are lighting them on an unobstructed surface in an unobstructed area.

    3. Make sure to have a pitcher or bottle of water, a small fire extinguisher and your hose handy if you have one available.

    4. Make sure you know which way the wind is blowing so you light the fuse from the correct side that you don’t burn yourself just lighting the things.

    5. Never hold any firework that isn’t specifically designed to be hand launched.

    6. You can even use a fireplace type lighter with the long tip on it so you’re not lighting them when you’re right up on them.

    7. Light fuse and immediately withdraw to safe distance.

How hard are any of those things to do ? Have been setting off fireworks for almost 50 years with these rules and never hurt myself or anyone else or caused any fires.

  29. I guess we will soon be seeing JPP on TruTV in the latest edition of “World’s Dumbest Partiers.”

  30. Let’s see. People who work at the hospital were tweeting last night he blew fingers off. “Sources” are saying he burned his hand. I’m gonna go with he is missing some digits.

  31. Strange… but so many are calling JPP an idiot for messing with fireworks, and yet millions on people worldwide do the same thing each and every year. Unless someone has proof that JPP was playing stupid games or acting foolishly with the firework, then perhaps this was just an unfortunate accident.

  32. Is JPP left handed? If not, then I guess it’s going to take quite some time before he is physically able to sign off on anything – be it a lawsuit or a new contract.
