Manti Te’o thinks he’s becoming a playmaker under Mike Nolan

AP

After entering the NFL following a high-profile college career (and an even higher-profile story surrounding his personal life), Manti Te’o has been relatively quiet in his two years with the Chargers. A part-time starter, Te’o hasn’t been a bust of a second-round pick, but he hasn’t been an impact player, either.

This year, Te’o thinks that’s going to change. With new linebackers coach Mike Nolan in San Diego, Te’o says he feels like he can be a playmaker more like he was at Notre Dame, where he was widely regarded as the best linebacker in college football.

“Coach Nolan brings an old-school feel to not only our position, but to the defense as a whole,” Te’o said, via ESPN. “He’s all about making plays. He’s all about doing whatever it takes to put each piece in a position to make a play. It’s definitely a good thing to have him here.”

The Chargers’ defense struggled through a rough 2014 season, but Te’o believes they’re ready for a course correction this year.

“We all can do a better job, especially up front,” Te’o said. “Just being more stout, knowing where everybody’s going to be and just having that mindset that we’re going to make a play. Definitely each one of us can do better at that.”

Te’o looked better in college than he has looked so far in his NFL career. Nolan might be the coach who can get the most out of Te’o’s talent.

  1. Who Manti Teo thinks is coach Mike Nolan is actually a department store mannequin.

  2. “Overhyped in college.. Bust in NFL …”

    SEE: notre dame’s Akili Quinn

  3. The reason no one has heard from him is that he is terrible at the point of attack. Blockers push him out of the way. He makes tackles 6 yards down the field.

  4. Why people think Nolan is a good DC is beyond me. His track record doesn’t support the reputation.

  5. My theory on the Chargers drafting Manti Te’o is that they were hoping to get a fan favorite that would put butts in the seats like Junior Seau did. Honestly, that’s the only reason I can come up with . The guy just sucks. To waste a 2nd Round pick on him is just mind boggling.

  6. Kinda funny the amount of smack talking on a player who isn’t a bust and has a lot of potential to be better.

Glad you guys are still recycling the only joke you’ve ever heard about him.

Hope Manti is right, that way you guys can keep being such amazing comedians

  7. How about making this proclamation after the pads come on and you do some hitting….what is Mike Nolan doing as a LB coach, wasn’t he a HC not to long ago?

  8. He’s invisible 90 % of the game and the other 10%, you see his back, because he either got steam rolled or he’s running backwards.

He’s a bust alright, a big time bust.

  9. Again PFT HAS all these wannabe football players/athletes talking crap. Half or maybe even 90% of the people who make comment here can’t even throw a football. The closest thing they have to actually playing football is their fantasy football league. Bust, fake girl friend or whatever, Manti is getting paid to play a kids game and also has a degree from ND. HATERS gonna hate and Manti gonna cont to get paid. Laugh and joke all u want. He is in the NFL!

  10. Te’o … was widely regarded as the best linebacker in college football.
Sure, until Alabama showed the world just how sub-par of an inside linebacker he actually was in the NC game.

  11. Probably hasn’t ever actually met a “playmaker”, but but he’s talked to, and become friends with some online.

A decade is a long time is real life. In the NFL it’s an eternity. Plus his tenure in SF was a bridge-burning, reputation-staining disaster.

He hasn’t exactly shined as DC in Atlanta the last couple of years, either.

  13. Second round picks aren’t qualified to be considered “busts” because every pick beyond the first round (and often times, including the first round) is a gamble. This dude may or may not become more than an average LB in this league, but what do you really expect from a 2nd round pick? Here’s a fun game for all you haters- Google your favorite team’s 2nd round picks since 2000 and tell me how many you struck out on versus how many are still with your team (not in the league, but with your team).

  14. Like most Domer players, he was way overhyped and the expectations were too high for an above average player. The media has an irrational love fest with Notre Dame and puts them on an undeserved pedestal.

I forgot about him….isn’t this the guy that had the fake girlfriend?
    =====================================

I think she was real but had a deep voice.

  16. Mike Nolan? LOL. Yeah such a great coach. That is why he has had 5 jobs in the last 10 years. Remember in San Fran where his biggest concern was wearing a suit on the sidelines?

  17. For laughs, can you imagine what any girl he might try to date (in real life) must be thinking in the back of her mind?

How seriously can any woman take this guy unless she is just a gold digger looking to take his money during his prime earning years?

  18. college just another product of the dame hype machine it wasn’t for his girlfriend nobody would even know who he was.

  19. “Like most Domer players, he was way overhyped and the expectations were too high for an above average player. The media has an irrational love fest with Notre Dame and puts them on an undeserved pedestal.”

Most Domer players were overhyped??? How were Zack Martin, Golden Tate, Kyle Rudolph, Justin Tuck, Robert Blanton, Harrison Smith, John Sullivan, Michael Floyd, Anthony Fasano, Troy Niklas, Theo Riddick and countless others overhyped? You probably haven’t heard of most of them, yet they’re all active NFL starters or contributors. For every Brady Quinn or Rick Mirer, there are the aforementioned players. I’m sure Montana, Theismann, Alan Page, Jerome Bettis, Rickey Watters, Dave Casper, Mark Bavaro, Tim Brown and hundreds other NFL vets were overhyped, too? It’s ok to hate ND, but try not to be so lazy in your comments….it proves you lack facts.

  20. Awww yes, another Manti Teo story!
    Love it! keep them coming.

Isn’t Tebow doing something news worthy too?
I heard he thinks he can throw a 30 yard pass.
