Shannon Sharpe: Antonio Gates “cheated the game”

AP

When Chargers tight end Antonio Gates was suspended four games for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs, he said he “never knowingly ingested” a banned substance and suggested that a supplement with incomplete ingredients triggered the violation.

His longtime teammate Philip Rivers said this week that he believes Gates is being honest and that it was “tough knowing” that Gates’s reputation might take a hit in the wake of the news. Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe thought that Gates was a “slam dunk” to join him in Canton before last Thursday’s suspension, but he thinks Gates’s whole career is up for reconsideration now.

During an appearance on Sirius XM NFL Radio with Bob Papa and Vic Carucci, Sharpe said that he isn’t buying the latest explanation from a player that they accidentally took a banned substance and that he thinks Gates “cheated the game.”

“It calls into question everything that he’s ever accomplished,” Sharpe said. “If he does it at the beginning of his career because he was an undrafted free agent, people are gonna say he did it to get in the league. Now he did it Year 13, Year 14 — People are going to say he did it to remain in the league. It does, it makes you question everything someone has ever accomplished.”

If Gates were a baseball player, this suspension would likely leave him outside of the Hall alongside Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mark McGwire and others who were tarred by admitted or suspected PED use. The NFL hasn’t seen Hall of Fame candidates at Gates’s level in the same boat unless you’re making room for Ray Lewis and his deer antler spray.

Voters will weigh the positive test along with the rest of Gates’s career when his name does come up for consideration in the future. The rest of that career hasn’t seen Gates suspended for violating league policies, but that might not matter if Sharpe’s view is shared by a wide audience.

  1. Since when is Shannon Sharpe’s opinion the end all be all of everything? Funny how he and Chris Carter love throwing stones from the porch of their glass houses on the mountain top.

  2. If we’re going to take PEDs into account for Hall of Fame eligibility, the ranks of ’70s Steelers are going to get very thin.

  3. If the St. Louis Cardinals can do a Watergate on the Houston Astros and that’s not bigger than Deflategate, this doesn’t stand a chance.

  4. Shut up Mr. Ed! Never liked that dude. Sterling was the man in that family.

  5. As a proud ex-Bronco he should go back to supporting all of his DUI buddies in Denver and stop worrying about Gates.

I have no doubt Sharpe was well aware of many of his former teammates using PEDs. His silence cheated the game just as much as Gates’ PED use has.

  6. Shannon sharp talks crap on everyone. He was a great player, but his mouth is killing his legacy for me.

  7. Ahh, more sage wisdom from one of the loudest mouths in NFL media. Shannon Sharpe is nothing but an instigating presence in any football conversation.

  8. Wasn’t Sharpe a member of the Broncos team that cheated the salary cap resulting in their only 2** SB “victories”?

  9. Expected

anyone who is in Sharpe’s ballpark in the HOF and stat book will get put down if dude doesn’t respect them.

He wants to diminish their value or ethics.
    Smart move.

    Love me some Sharpe

  10. If Antonio Gates played a position other than tight end, Sharpe would never have said anything. He’s thinking about his own legacy and place in the game’s history, not Gates’s. Fortunately, I don’t get the idea that too many fans care what Sharpe has to say about anything.

  11. Was gates PED’s test determined by 2 gages which were not calibrated or did the test takers not document baseline readings or did they fail to take into account the to line the sample was drawn versus the time inspected.

    Free Brady

  12. What is the problem with the NFL community these days? Current players and coaches, former players and coaches, fans and the media …

The Patriots use cameras and ball pressure to cheat … the Broncos, Cowboys and Redskins use salary cap violations to cheat … the Falcons and Colts pump in crowd noise to cheat … the Browns use text messages to cheat … the Seahawks (and players from nearly EVERY OTHER TEAM) have been busted for PED use and therefore, cheat.

Check that “yourteamcheats” website. You’re all turning my/our favorite pastime into a cesspool of sissy name calling and “cheater” accusing and frankly, I’ve grown pretty damn tired of it all.

NFL football is a MAN’S GAME!

There is no room for your cry baby BS. Win like men on the field and take your beatings when you lose. Save your excuses for your shrink.

I don’t know what’s wrong with everybody these days. Spineless cry babies.

  13. As a Chiefs fan, I respect Sharpe’s game. But he just needs to shut his mouth. Why don’t you flap your YAP as to why CBS let u go? Replaced by the BEST TE ever Tony G. And some BUM from the Jets, Bart Scott I think it is.

  14. Shannon Sharpe has an opinion on something? Well that’s rare. Oh, BTW, Deflatedfootballs and all other whiny Pats fans, stop it already, just stop.

  15. Here we go…

Get ready for the “Internet finds….” article regarding Shannon Sharpe. They found it on Rice, they’ll find it on him.

  16. “If Antonio Gates played a position other than tight end, Sharpe would never have said anything. He’s thinking about his own legacy and place in the game’s history, not Gates’s.”

Same way Don “No Class” Shula busts on Belichick any chance he gets. Shula is TERRIFIED of BB and how the record books are being re written.

  17. I have heard several players claim it was due to tainted supplements. I only remember one supplement ever being tested to verify the story. (starcaps) Testing wouldn’t alter the outcome but it could help their credibility. They won’t offer it up because when it comes back negative they would be proven both a cheater and a liar.

I don’t buy Gates’ story. Players have every opportunity to ensure they stay legal. If they come up positive it is almost certain taking the drug was intentional for an edge or to mask something they took previously to gain an unfair advantage. Gates was slipping and knew it. He took PEDs and had a better year then got caught. The excuse was a pitiful attempt to salvage his reputation.

  18. Yeah! You go Shannon! Crucify him! Tear it down!
    Thinking out of the box.
These guys should all be able to take these drugs as to be dispersed by a NFL-sanctioned doctor/systematic monitoring plan. You could test the for the levels, because the levels would already be expected.
Doctors know what kind of medications like these can be beneficial to the body at times after a football game. Use the medicine instead of prohibiting it. They run the risk of doing these things to their bodies, their lifespans would be adversely affected if they participate, and some sort of legal agreement to make it all happen. All sports, these performance enhancing substances all cry out to make the end product better. The penalties for cheating would be extreme because of the give and take of the situation (already being able to play under performance enhancing drugs).
Or have two leagues. A drug free one and one like the one I described here. I tell you that baseball would benefit most from two leagues.

  19. deflatedfootballs says:
Why is this not a bigger deal then Deflategate..

Apples and oranges. Brady bribed equipment guys to alter the balls AFTER the officials approved them for play, heck the actual order probably came from BB so that all his eligible O-linemen could catch the ball as easily as Brady could grip them, hence the draft picks and fines along with Brady’s 4 games.

  20. A horse is a horse of course of course..

And no one can talk to a horse of course…

Unless of course, that horse of course, is the famous Mr. Sharp…

  21. The Broncos weren’t just caught once cheating the salary cap, they were caught TWICE.

And if Pat Bowlen was brazenly paying Elway and Terell Davis deferred payments and under the table payments you have to wonder what else he was up to during Denver’s Super Bowl* run of the late 90’s.

  22. He got caught and got punished. Not saying PEDS aren’t bad but there have been guys in the Hall Of Fame that have done similar things or even worse. Yea he got caught using PEDS but that doesn’t mean everything he has done is because of PEDS. There are many backups in the league that have been caught using PEDS and they by no means are on Gates level. I can take PEDs right now and that doesn’t mean I am all of a sudden an all pro football player. With PEDS or without PEDs the guy worked extremely hard to get to were he is and that goes for any athlete who has done it.

Except PEDs were banned in ’87, and literally everyone in the NFL took them before then. Its a shame how facts get in the way of being hater.

  27. Ray Lewis never tested positive for any banned substance. Mentioning him here is unfair. Apples and oranges.

  28. So did you. Your team best players took lower salaries and got paid illegally to cheat the salary cap. Something that was imposed to keep you know balance. Why is that never a footnote at every article about Elway, Davis or Sharpe? It’s cheating if you want to call Brady, Rice, and people caught using PEDs that, then be fair: Denver cheated too.

And for the record Gates is better than Sharpe.

    Sharpe: 815 rec , 10060 yards, 62 TDs
    Gates: 788 rec, 10014 yards, 99 TDs

    So shut up Shannon

  29. If there is anyone who has the resume to speak on cheating, it’s a ex-Bronco. That franchise is as dirty as it gets.

  30. Everyone is quick to judge last year Robert Mathis got suspended for taking a drug to help him and his wife pregnant. That is completely not fair in my opinion and we shouldn’t be so quick to put labels on people if you don’t have the real facts available.

  31. I bet he had friends and teammates who used ‘special training’ methods and he said nothing. You know I don’t really care because football is such a physically demanding sport that if a guy needs a little boost fine.

  34. To all Patriot hating whiners, if you believe the Wells report, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I want to sell you.
As for all the whining about cheating, every team has done something to cheat so can we put an end non stop whining by all the self righteous people out there that think there team or players are as a pure as a newborn baby.

  35. At the end of the day there are too many factors that go into a football game to determine that one man skews the outcome because of some pills or vitamins. At the end of the day its the will of the man over the skill of the man.

  36. Are the Broncos Super Bowl wins called into question because Romonowski was a key contributor? He took more steroids than an Olympic track team.

  37. Oh and keep Brady out of your cheater comments please. it’s getting old and anyone who’s read the Wells report and all the other info knows nothing happened, unless you just have blind hate for him of course.

  38. Maybe I don’t know what I am talking about, but I thought that a 4 game suspension meant that it was a second offense. Am I wrong about that?

  39. Robert Mathis took a drug to disguise his PED use (not help get his wife pregnant). Ray Lewis took PEDs that were a lot stronger than deer antler spray, but the NFL did not have the guts to test him because they knew he would fail.

  40. SS played for the Broncos for 12 years. Perhaps he can tell us which if Bronco players were ever on PEDs or if he was aware of any other kind of cheating.

Did he knowingly play next to a cheater?

  41. Seriously…Shannon Sharpe…If Shannon sharpe never did PEDs I will eat my hat. Next you will tell me Takeo Spikes body is all natural.

  42. You know what equally cheapens the game? Trying to point fingers at players when you knowingly did the same thing and are trying to create a perception you didn’t.

It would be no different than if Ray Lewis called Gates out after all that Deer Antler spray stuff went down.

If people really think most NFL players arn’t abusing these drugs just as a form of survival in the league, you are absolutely kidding yourself.

Call Gates a cheater all you want. Drugs in the NFL is an expectation I have.

Wells cleared Belichick and Kraft as having anything to do with this NFL hatchet job.
So many haters here are just like Shannon Sharpe. You’ll grasp at anything to make you feel better about yourself.

  44. so says the teammate of Bill Romonowski, one of the NFL’s most widely acknowledged human chemistry sets in his time

  45. PED’s and cheating stopped bothering me a long time ago. When you look at the risk vs reward it just makes sense to do whatever it takes.

  46. even Underdog was a PED user.

Now Popeye is the MAN…..spinach is the way to go!!

  47. Gates is not even the best tight end in the history of the San Diego Chargers, Kellen Winslow Sr. is.

Now if you’re concerned about “cheating the game”, all I have to say is:

    Belicheat
    ****

which pretty much sums it all up.

  48. I don’t get why these guy just give whatever supplement they plan to take to a friend and have him tested before they take it themselves.

Probably because “It was in a supplement” is the easiest excuse you can give when you get busted taking steroids.

  49. Broncos busted and suspended for PED use

    •DL Daryl Gardener (2003)
    •LB Lee Flowers (2003)
    •WR Adrian Madise (2004)
    •P Todd Sauerbrun (2006)

    •G Quentin Saulsberry (2012)
•LB Von Miller (2013) – Substance abuse, but cheated urine collection system
    •WR Wes Welker (2014)

I don’t recall SS ever mentioning Von Miller or Welker as players who cheated the game. Hey SS, where’s the outrage?

  50. Someone with a twitter acct should contact Gates and ask him if Sharpe is a cheater because his teams cheated the salary cap twice to win Super Bowls… that would provide rich media content for us.

  51. deflatedfootballs says:

The reason why this isnt bigger than deflategate:
Yes both him and Tom cheated. Gates improved himself, he gets the ball around 5-10 times per game give or take so his PEDS affect up to 10 plays per game. Brady throws the ball 30-40 times per game, and deflated balls are easier to hold onto so every rushing play is affected, so chalk up another 25-30 plays. So Gates taking PEDs affects around 10 plays per game, Brady deflating balls affects about 55-70 plays per game. Id say one has a much different affect on the game than the other.

  52. It goes without saying that Sharpe has cheated the English language his entire life.

Except neither of those points are facts. They are both fantasy, wishful thinking, whatever label along those lines that you would like to call them 🙂

Now THESE are facts: The Steelers have 6 titles tainted by either PED cheating or a ref that apologized to the Seahawks for impacting the result of the Super Bowl.

Not one Steeler title is legit.

We saw how they did against Tebow in the playoffs once they stopped cheating.

haha u gotta be kidding right? Were 11 of 12 balls a full 2 PSI low like initial reports? no. Were the balls under the legal limit? YES. I dont care if some were 1.5 PSI low and some were .5 psi low. The weather didnt do that to them- someone did that to them. Every pats fan keeps deflecting the issue……Well well well every QB does this! (ummmm #1 u cant prove that, and #2 does that make it ok?) Well well well the NFL’s report of all balls being 2 PSI low is false! (ok great, they were still under the limit, so who cares that an inital report wasnt 100% accurate, the balls were still low, you still cheated).

  58. A couple of facts for Steeler apologists and uninformed fans:

What was legal until 1990 – using steroids prescribed by a doctor for a valid medical condition. This is not cheating.

What was NEVER legal in this country – ABUSING steroids for a purpose other than it was intended or prescribed. Such as for the purpose of getting bigger, stronger and resist injury better on the football field. This is most certainly cheating.

I think you know the difference. 🙂

  59. i LOVE pats fans who say PED’s are so much worse than deflating balls. PED’s affects one player for however many plays he’s involved in (generally 10 lets say), a deflated football affects every single offensive play (around 60). So how can u possibly say one player taking PED’s affects the game more than changing the one central piece of an offense that affects every play? Regardless, Antonio Gates didnt think he could hack it on a level playing field, and Tom Brady didnt think he could hack it on a level playing field either. Both are horrible and extremely strict penalties need to occur to stop this for good.

When was it that Brady deflated balls again?

Was it against the NY Jets on October 16th, 2014, when text messages from Jastremski state that all balls were close to 16 psi when checked after the game, and should have been 13 psi, completely legal?

Was it in the AFC Championship when all balls were within the range of the ideal gas law and were not unnaturally deflated?

Was it in the Super Bowl with the highest scrutiny on ball deflation in the history of the NFL when he beat the defending champions with a historic defense by setting Super Bowl passing records?

I honestly can’t tell if you’re trolling or just really not that intelligent at this point.

When you take into account that Wells ignored Anderson’s best recollection, and that the ball the colts tested on the sideline was exactly at the PSI it should have been given the elements, and that the average of the three tests on that ball matched up with the average of the 11 balls tested in the locker room WITH THE GAUGE ANDERSON SAID HE USED, it’s clear there was no deflation. Oh, the Colts balls were less deflated? Check with my friends at AEI, they’ll explain that in detail for you if you like.

I’d say so too… PEDs have a much bigger effect on the game.

Steroids allow a player to gain elite level speed and gain tons of muscle there is no way they could gain otherwise. Not to mention Steroids are actually illegal and bad for you.

In contrast, the league wasn’t even checking ball pressure regularly and the rule for tampering with a ball had an indicative fine of 25k. That’s how much they cared about it before this issue came up. It’s also really self limiting as if a ball is too soft it can’t be thrown properly. The rule is dumb and unnecessary. Especially given what QBs can do to a ball to get it ready for game play. Eli soaks them, dries them grinds them. You name it. I am sure all the QBs do the same stuff.

It is a rule, and I am not even arguing about whether Patriots broke it or not. I am just saying that it isn’t a big deal and it has very minimal impact on the game in comparison to PEDs.

Imagine a simple game of pick up football… does it matter if the ball isn’t perfectly inflated? Not really. Everyone would notice if it was too soft. It’s still the same sport in any case.

Now, does it matter that the players on the other team are twice as strong and twice as fast? Yes, that matters.

  67. A few fun Broncos facts:

Only team in NFL history to be fined for taping another team’s practices. 🙂

Had one of their players suspended recently for tampering with the PED testing process 🙂

Punished for using an accounting trick to cheat the salary cap. 🙂 Not coincidently this helped them win 2 Super Bowls.

Cheated their way to victory in a playoff game by using an illegal substance on their arms 🙂

Neither of these statements are accurate. There were provisions in NFL rules prior to 1987 that banned the use of prescription medications. Many PED’s in use by the Steelers in the 70’s were prescription drugs and fell under this policy. The NFL didn’t ban them in 1987, they implemented a testing and suspension policy. They aren’t “illegal” now if used under a doctor’s prescription.

The Steelers in the 70’s are the ethical equivalent of Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens. Baseball implemented a testing and suspension policy in 2003.

Also I think the whole “everyone else was doing it” excuse only works if you allow for that for other teams’ infractions, not just the ones you like.

Wells told Exponent it was not known which gauge was used (see page 44 of Exponent’s report) and in fact three times on that same page Exponent makes that same claim.

When you take into account the Ideal Gas Law, four balls were above the Ideal Gas Law range, five balls were right within it, and three balls were lower. How do you explain the 9 balls that were within or above the range assuming McNally let air out of them in the bathroom?

It seems you are ignoring the Ideal Gas Law…..maybe it doesn’t work with your agenda, but just because you don’t believe it (or don’t want to believe it) doesn’t make it reality. You can’t make up your own physics to go along with your preferred end result.

  72. Using PEDs is definitely cheating and most of them are illegal and taking them sends a horrible message to young people coming into the sport.

Also, as we have seen in cycling and other sports, if left to run rampant, they can set a bar of performance for the professional level that is unattainable if someone were to be natural.

Not sure how bad the NFL is, but I would suspect there are many people that are using and a very high number of players have at least tried them at some point in their football career.

And because of that, I don’t think you can hold it against Gates. There are plenty of players in the hall of fame that took steroids at a time when they weren’t even illegal and it helped their performance and I don’t think it has changed much since they were banned. I think at this time it is just part of the game unfortunately.

  73. Everybody cheats. Seriously. Wake up and smell the coffee. There’s too much money, fame, and power at stake. Your favorite team cheats. Your favorite player is likely to be cheating. Referees have cheated. It’s human nature. If you don’t think so, go lay your head in mommy’s lap and maybe she’ll make you a nice sandwich.

  74. than deflategate:
Yes both him and Tom cheated. Gates improved himself, he gets the ball around 5-10 times per game give or take so his PEDS affect up to 10 plays per game.

Oh but it would impact MUCH more than 10 plays a game. Don’t forget a guy who is roided up would be that much better a blocker, that much better a runner, etc. And more importantly that much more resistant to injury. Football is a team game and guys who don’t get touches can still be key players that make a play go.

Also Tom did not cheat in any way shape or form but that goes without saying. 🙂

  75. Also I think the whole “everyone else was doing it” excuse only works if you allow for that for other teams’ infractions, not just the ones you like.

    Yup.

And in the 70’s Steelers case, it’s well known that more Steeler players by far have died young from heart and other steroid abuse related illnesses than any other team.

So in that instance I’m afraid the “everyone else was doing it” argument falls well short of the mark.

haha u gotta be kidding right? Were 11 of 12 balls a full 2 PSI low like initial reports? no. Were the balls under the legal limit? YES. I dont care if some were 1.5 PSI low and some were .5 psi low. The weather didnt do that to them- someone did that to them. Every pats fan keeps deflecting the issue……Well well well every QB does this! (ummmm #1 u cant prove that, and #2 does that make it ok?) Well well well the NFL’s report of all balls being 2 PSI low is false! (ok great, they were still under the limit, so who cares that an inital report wasnt 100% accurate, the balls were still low, you still cheated).”

Keep sticking your head in the sand when facts get sent your way though. It’s a great look for you.

Wow you didn’t read anything the.

If a football is 12.5 at the start of the game then measured at the START OF half time yes they will lose pressure due to temp. Change and yes to 1 to 2 psi. Now at the end of half time they started to check the Colts footballs and guess what 3 of the 4 they had time to look at where just as bad now go figure why isn’t that a story. Admit it this is a biased investigation to deter people from the real issues of the NFL (Ray Rice) and the former Jets that work in the NFL front office that hate the Pats Goodell included.

Love the pats fans trash talking broncos and steelers about cheating. Priceless.

  80. Gates has been a relative class act throughout his career. Shape, as good as he was on the field, is a relentless moron who got himself (to the celebration of fans everywhere) booted off CBS. The man is the beneficiary of TWO salary cap cheats and a team that used Vaseline on their jerseys in a time when no one cared, to win two Super Bowls. It is what it is, and the Broncos own those two rings whether I like it or not. But Sharpe should for once in his life realize he’s hurling bricks in a glass house and just shut up already.

Goodell does nothing but bail out Kraft, Bill and the rest of the pats. Kraft decides Goodell’s salary- so it makes sense he would hate him for giving him 44 mil/yr!!!

#2 oh yea your pals at AEI that say weather is the cause. Hmmm in NE the ‘weather’ deflated a ball 2 psi in one half. So lets say in GB that would prob be 3psi b/c its colder, then double that for the second half. Seems logical that balls in green bay deflate 6 psi over the course of a game and NO ONE says a word, Rodgers just doesnt notice at all. No one has ever complained about the deflation of footballs in the history of cold weather games. All the sudden the balls just drop 2 psi in NE for the first time ever………….rrrriiiiggghhhhtttttt. Oh to console him about the tough times he is facing when Tom never once reached out to him before that. All this makes so much sense!

  83. So let me get this straight. The athletes can’t consume 4 billion illicit substances. This is the first instance we have seen of this from Antonio Gates, who is a freak athlete that didn’t even play TE in college.

I am more inclined to give Gates the benefit of the doubt. He doesn’t strike me as the type of person who would cheat.

  84. He is not lying! PEDs are a clear cut attempt to cheat (not singling out Gates) and yes I also agree that this type of infraction should be considered a bigger deal than deflate gate. However, deflate gate would not have been such a big deal if Tom Brady had just admitted his involvement in the very beginning. Also I would like to point out that substance abuse and PEDs should not been seen as equals. Booze and weed are not an attempt to cheat and they are in no way a performance enhancer.

  85. OK OK OK. If I am able to give him the benefit of the doubt because he uses the “I didn’t KNOWINGLY ingested anything” excuse, then tell us what you took! There are some over the counter substances like diuretics that are banned substances. Using PED as the coverall statement leads us to believe steroids or HGH. I would like to know more.

Of course not, in your mind, it gives you an excuse for losing to the Patriot’s GET OVER IT!

Rice Cheated by using stickem, the Bronco’s , Steelers and 49er’s were all caught cheating on the Cap, the Buccaneers QB paid the ball boys off to get his footballs into the Super Bowl,
Bill Cowher admitted to trying to steal signals, Bill Walsh was accused of messing with sideline headphones because he scripted his first 25 plays, Mike Shanahan admitted in Sports illustrated that he hired lip readers to steal signals. When you see a game this season, you will find coordinators holding something over their mouths when they are calling in signals. Why would they do this if they weren’t playing the Patriots’, the only team people here seem to think that bends the rules? I could go on and on but get a whiff of reality and realize all teams do things to get an edge. If you think your team is as pure as a newborn baby, you need to get a clue! 102. This is not bigger than deflate gate because Gates manned up and took responsibility for it. PED infractions are not uncommon in any sport. But what Brady did was and is unforgivable. And he continues to deny all knowledge when there is evidence to prove otherwise.

  103. People who mention the Broncos “cheating” the salary cap to field a better team really should research what actually happened. The didn’t sign one extra player as a result. It paid salaries with interest down the road to help fund the new stadium, not to field a better team. They were still within the cap. Do your homework before speaking.

  104. Shannon may have had several concussions that he didn’t report to the coaches, but in a way HE’S RIGHT ! It’s too bad it had to happen, but he should know that ANY SUPPLEMENTS need to be checked out and given the OK by the trainer. This is the norm for any pro athlete. This has been drilled into their heads. Get it checked before injest. Dumb on his part for sure.

You have to make several assumptions to arrive at ANY conclusion because the NFL did not follow the proper procedures during the game and was not aware of the ideal gas law when this all began. That’s a ridiculous comment.

If we throw out the science, what are we left with? McNally calls himself the deflator in May 2014, Jastremski claims balls are supposed to be 13 psi in October 2014 thus nullifying any lengthy scheme that is believed to have existed prior to that game, McNally texts Jastremski in November to “deflate and give somebody that jacket” clearly in reference to WEIGHT, further nullifying any deflation scheme claims and invalidating the deflator nickname, NFL has consistently and continually lied regarding the events surrounding the AFC championship game (Blandino’s knowledge, Morts tweet which STILL hasn’t been retracted, Wells assertion that the NFL didn’t ask him to investigate them).

But McNally didn’t recall what he peed into that night so they must be guilty. This is your logic?

Explain how saying u are the deflator is “clearly” referring to weight. Because in the thousands of times ive used the work “deflate” it has NEVER implied weight loss. And he called HIMSELF the deflator, the fat guy. If he was skinny i would have at least considered it. And now explain Tom reaching out to the ball boy 6 times after the game. Tom never once called him before that, but all the sudden Tommy boy is so worried about this guy he never cared about before? Why call? What is there to discuss? If the ball boy did something screwed up why would Tom care unless he was involved? If the ball boy got a DUI do you think Tom would call him 6 times afterwards to console him and tell him it’ll be ok???? Unless Tom was involved and there was a story to go over, then no reason for tom to call. And if weather can deflated balls .5- 2psi in one half in NE then balls in Green Bay would deflate about 1-2.5 PSI in a half (so up to 5 PSI over the course of the game). And never once has any QB every complained about balls being underinflated and asked to have them filled back up. Wierd how this ‘weather’ thing only has ever happened in NE.

I definitely agree with Point #1.

As for Point #3, the Patriots have sold-out every home game since 1994 – well before Tom Brady’s arrival. Gillette stadium did not open until 2002. By my math, that is eight years of sellouts in the admittedly godawful Foxboro stadium, and seven years before Tom Brady’s first start.

In other words, your third point is pointless.

  123. To be fair most athletes who take PEDs use the to recover off the field and not to gain an advantage on the field. The NFL really needs to clean up the league, cheating is becoming a norm I refuse to accept as a fan. Goodell needs to go because most of the bad press has happened on his watch, its not a coincidence this happened under a person who lied about Ray Rice. Goodell is a sewer rat!

  124. I was not aware that Patriot fans existed before 2001. I never saw one in my life until then.

  125. Lol you same clowns are quick to talk about and rip Seattle for PED’s but now are trying to justify Gates using whatever or whatever he didnt but talking smack about Sharpe! Talk about being two face its all through this post!!!

  126. PED’s for one player are significantly worse than seven plays of illegal taping and science debunked deflations put together. That being said I see no need to asterisk anything from the 70’s to now. The reality is this no one team in the NFL can claim they are 100% on the up and up. And the idea of principle and integrity being a concern to anyone in and around the NFL is folly. It doesn’t exist, never has.

  127. Shannon Sharpe got huge all of a sudden during the ’95 season.. Remember the EAS commercials.. Shannon doesn’t need to talk at all but a horse is a horse!

  128. Wasn’t Sharpe a member of the Broncos team that cheated the salary cap resulting in their only 2** SB “victories”?

LOL it’s funny that keeps being brought up. Sore losers.
Denver was the best team in the league for 2 seasons and it wasn’t even close.
Denver would have beaten the crap out of all those teams regardless of the salary cap juggling.

And yet the Patriots have sold out every single home game since 1994. 🙂

60200 is an awful lot of “non Patriot fans” to be attending games every week in Foxboro. 🙂

Heres a fact for you, the Patriots are the ONLY team ever to have a first round pick taken from them TWICE. Soooooo the patriots technically are the biggest cheaters of all time. Thats a fact, period. No team has ever had that level of punishment from cheating hahahahaha. And this ALL happened during your ‘super bowl era’, basically that is the DEFINITION of having tainted rings. “yea we won, we have gotten the two biggest punishments for cheating in the history of the sport while we won……..but yea, we won!”

    —–
4 legit rings. 🙂 And they are all so sparkly and shiny! WOW!

You know…like the 4 rings the Bills almost had.

    Emphasis on “almost”. 🙂

But McNally didn’t recall what he peed into that night so they must be guilty. This is your logic?

    ****
If that’s the conclusion you draw from my comment, I question your ability to read.

Anyone with half a brain and any semblance of objectivity realizes that McNally was LYING. And why would he lie, lest he be covering something up? The weight loss claim for the name “Deflator” is absolutely laughable.

While it may not rise to the top of the moral relativity scale, it’s still cheating, they got caught, and like the GOAT said, time to pay up and move on.

  132. Pats fans calling any other team a cheater is like Chris Christie calling someone else fat. Please stop, you are making fools of yourselves and its getting old.

  133. I actually believe Antonio Gates’s explanation.

But with that said – these guys are NFL players and they should know fully well the ramifications of a failed PED test…. so you would think they should know exactly what they are ingesting. Apparently not well enough…

Yes your Steelers are filthy stinking cheaters and get no respect whatsoever from me. My respect is EARNED not given. 0 legit titles. 5 by cheating and 1 from the refs.

Don’t worry. A tell all book is being written right now documenting the rampant and systemic cheating that has built the Steeler organization from the NFL laughingstock that it was before the cheating started in the 70’s – with just 7 seasons over .500 in their entire 40 year existence – into a team with 6* rings.

It will be a fascinating read. I can’t wait to pick a copy up.

    🙂

  135. I don’t think anyone cares about gaining the resident Patriot troll’s respect. I know I don’t.

  136. I’d bet the feeling is mutual Mr Shatner’s toupee. And a giant huzah!! from this Pats fan on your PFT handle. It’s awesome. I’m a little jealous of it to be honest……

  137. “Oh, BTW, Deflatedfootballs and all other whiny Pats fans, stop it already, just stop.”

    ————————————

No, we WON’T just stop. It’s called payback.

You feel like you have some kind of birth right to bash the Patriots and their fans over any and every trivial little thing you can get your hands on.

We get it. They win a lot of games and you don’t like that. They’ve dashed the championship dreams of something like 22 teams and counting since the turn of the century. I can see how you’d be mad.

But every modern day accusation against them is either a trivial offense or a complete fabrication. Nothing but excuses by spineless pseudo fans.

You’ve opened Pandora’s Box and the only way you can close it is by dropping the childish cheater propaganda.

Until then, Patriots fans will ruthlessly ride every one of the other 31 teams like rented mules on any ounce of dirt that rears its head.

  138. How can you possibly read “deflate and give someone that jacket” and think its a reference to anything besides weight?

So to say the term deflator being related to weight is laughable is simply wrong. They have an example of using it regarding weight.

Again, you can say he lied about what he peed in, it really doesn’t matter. There is no other evidence that anything happened.

  139. Seriously, read about the cap issues with Denver! All you haters calling sharp a hypocrite should look to see if there was a advantage gained by the cap issues! They were paying for a stadium!! This didn’t help the players avoid fumbles better, these guys were not stronger on the field… Some dumb bean counter was trying to dig up funds to pay for the stadium. If you geniuses cannot read about the issue then don’t use it. In those years Denver beat your team! With no extra players from a shady salary cap! Get over it!!

  140. I miss the Patriots of the 70’s and 80’s when they were horrible. Their fans were so much nicer then, now they’re just a bunch of drunken, loud mouth, arrogant, blowhards …. see post below for proof.

  141. It questions everything he ever did … really … because I believe this was probably not his FIRST test and there has never been an issue in the past correct? Shannon … shut up ! Gates is HOF material and has defied the odds in so many ways and can’t blame him for wanting to stick around for a couple more years …. especially if he thinks the Chargers are close !

  142. The Patriots had a ton of very good teams in the late 70’s and mid 80’s, just to clarify.

Second observation: the Patriots are consistently in everyone’s heads–every thread ends up having a discussion about them. Best loved and hated team of the 21st century so far. That’s fine with me.
