Bucs’ C.J. Wilson injured hand in fireworks accident

Jason Pierre-Paul wasn’t the only NFL player to injure his hand with fireworks.

Buccaneers cornerback C.J. Wilson also suffered a “severe” hand injury in a Fourth of July fireworks accident, Wilson’s representatives told Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune. The Buccaneers are aware of the injury but have no comment.

The 25-year-old Wilson played in two games for the Buccaneers last season and two games for the Bears the year before. He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of North Carolina State in 2013.

The injury to Pierre-Paul is believed to be serious enough that it could force him to miss regular-season games for the Giants. There’s no word yet on how severe Wilson’s injury is.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, fireworks injuries send thousands of Americans to emergency rooms each year around the Fourth of July.

  1. If I made the kind of money football players make i hire someone to buy and light all my fireworks for me, if I had to have them.

  2. Johnthan Banks
    Alteran Verner
    Mike Jenkins
    Sterling Moore
    Leonard Johnson
    Brandon Dixon

Those are the CBs I can name on the team. Honestly hadn’t ever heard of this guy and the corner group is one of Tampa’s strengths so his chances of making the team likely went down with any injury

  3. Ban Fireworks!
    Ban Redskins!
    Ban Obscenity!
    Ban Forks!
    Ban ’em all!
Clearly it was the firework that is to name here.
Clearly it is the football team, Redskins, to blame.
Clearly, eating utensils are to blame for obese people.
    Clearly.

  4. I see a new clause in contracts because of this….remember the main difference between “genius” and “stupidity” is that “genius” has it’s limits.

  5. it’s because of people like this why fireworks are illegal in my state. good job

  6. Hey JPP!! Another new member has joined “Club Stupid”. Please welcome C.J. Wilson as he enters the pearly gates of “Club Stupid”!

  7. I’m a pretty obsessive Bucs fan, and even I don’t know who this guy is. There’s been a thoroughly dispensable rotating series of dime corners for a few years who suck for a couple games, get cut, and get replaced.

  8. “fireworks injuries send 1000s of americans to emergency rooms”…and a few incredibly stupid, dumb as a stump stupid, nfl players.

I am scared to ask the wonderlic scores of these 2 mental giants. they probably make vince young look like a Rhodes scholar.

I was thinking the same thing. I would now put clauses in contracts for any injuries sustained for non-football type activities. Things like working out and keeping in shape should be exempt obviously but for this type of crap, absolutely!

  10. 1. Set firework on ground.
    2. Light.
    3. Move to a safe distance.
    4. Enjoy.

It is a simple process. At no point should you be holding explosives with a burning fuse.

  11. I don’t get it…these are professional athletes and I’m a fat guy in Georgia that’s been lighting fireworks since I was a child and I’ve never had an injury. Put me in, coach!

  12. Fireworks sales to the public should be banned. No good comes from them. Why should I have to worry about untrained idiots burning my house down? You want to see an event that’s utterly boring except for the final 10 seconds when it becomes just “ok,” drive down to your town fairgrounds and pop open a lawn chair with the rest of braindead.

  13. Can football teams just create Moron clause? It could cover variety of self caused injuries and idiotic behavior.
Of course that would probably put half of all football players on the street.. oh well.

  14. Makes you wonder what guys like this would be doing if they weren’t big enough or fast enough to play in the NFL.

  15. The Gmen havent paid JPP a visit to a Florida Hospital.

    Safe to assume

Wilson has not been visited by the Bucs in a NY Hospital?

    Boring!

Maybe you just can not fix stupid. You sure can not legislate it.

  17. ^ you sure can legislate it. Close down these fireworks stores, which ironically are mostly in states that are illegal to shoot them off anyway. Like Pennsylvania – where stores have separate wings with the “good” fireworks that are only accessible to out of state residents.

  18. Perhaps it’s time for the NFL to put together their own Fourth of July fireworks celebrations and make it mandatory for all 2,880 players currently on offseason rosters to attend. That way the players can see fireworks and show their patriotism and the NFL is guaranteed not to have any of these idiots Wyle E. Coyote with a burning explosive.

  19. I can completely visualize that what happened in both cases is that that JPP and Wilson had been drinking, wanted to show off how tough they are as Big Pro Football Players, and did it by holding a firecracker and letting it go off in their hand. The most uttered phrase before an accidental death is “Hey, watch this!”

  20. Just another stupid pro football player. It’s a league of misfits who should be working digging ditches or sitting in jails. A very discusting situation for the NFL.

Not stupid. They will just find some other way to hurt themselves and others. Take a car for example. You going to outlaw that?

Oh…he we go….the playbook slippery slope argument. That goes both ways. I guess we should legalize heroin, uzis and hand grenades too right?

People need licenses to drive. People don’t need licenses to shoot off rockets onto my roof.

  23. This happened in NC and local reports say “he blew 2 and a half fingers off” and likely will lose them barring a surgical miracle. Swear this true and no way he plays football anymore. Well, at least not as a Pro. Sorry, to hear it, but (dumb) people make choices and must live with the consequences.
