Zach Mettenberger calls Texans, J.J. Watt letterman jackets “high schoolish”

Zach Mettenberger incurred the wrath of Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt last season after posting a celebratory selfie prior to making his first career start for the Tennessee Titans.

Watt said the NFL was “not high school” and felt that it showed Mettenberger wasn’t focused enough for the start, a 30-16 loss to Houston.

Mettenberger, in an interview with CampusSports.net, elected to re-open the subject over eight months later and take a shot at the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and the Texans.

“J.J. had to say it’s a bit high schoolish that I take selfies, and I think he still rags me on Instagram every time he posts a selfie,” Mettenberger said, via Tania Ganguli of ESPN.com. “At the same time, if that’s high schoolish, he got a letterman jacket made — a Texans letterman jacket.

“That’s pretty high schoolish to me, don’t you say?”

In December 2012, the Texans ordered lettermen’s jackets for the players to wear as the 11-1 team traveled to New England to face the Patriots.

By the way, Houston lost that game 42-14.

Is it too late for the Texans to schedule the Titans for their “Homecoming Game” this fall?

  1. December 2012? Is he looking to be the first player to be killed while playing football? JJ Watt will destroy him just to prove a point and rip out his heart for all to see. Why you gotta poke the bear? Stupid.

  2. As a high schooler,
Both are right. A lot of people are immature and being stupid in high school.
Its a living hell to say the least

  3. JJ ripping on Mettenberger for taking a selfie was pretty amateur. Especially his little selfie celebration after he sacked him. Seems like he has a obsession of sorts with him. Says he should be focused as a QB, but he was the one creeping on Mettenbergers twitter. Maybe J.J. has a little crush. Let the kid take pictures of himself…The more JJ watt talks the more he reminds me of Gronk.

  4. Haha score one for Mettenberger! A good zing but its gonna cost the Titans Mariotas head.

  5. A backup QB is calling out arguably the best defensive player in the league? For something that was a team thing and not an individual act.

  6. JJ is still in his shallow head, I see. Too bad he will probably be riding the bench when the Texans play the Oiler Juniors.

  7. Right on Zach. Those letterman’s jackets were the weirdest thing the NFL has seen in years. And obviously most of the team thought so because we haven”t seen those goofy high school jackets since.

But tread carefully– it’s hard to fight the current deification of JJ.

  8. Destroyed lmao!!! Watt is the fakest person in the NFL, and that’s truly saying something in a league that has Russell Wilson. “AWW SHUCKS I just googled what do rich people buy, a-hyuck!” What a cringeworthy tryhard. The real shame is the media lapping it all up eagerly. Michael Bennett was right, Watt is a great player but grossly overhyped as he often sacrifices the overall defense’s integrity for his personal flashiness and stat glory.

  9. Don’t blame Zach for talking smack now that he’s the backup in Tennessee. It’s not like he has to face J J on the field anymore. I wonder if they teach you how to make a career out of holding clipboards and sending in signals in high school? ..Yeah, I’m sure that they do.

  10. JJ say

“Zach buddy …I got some turf that I would like to introduce to you”

Better hope Mariotta doesn’t get injured.

  11. A grade school student taking selfies is silly….

A high school student taking selfies is silly….

An adult taking selfies is just stupid….especially since most of these people have a face for radio….I’d think they’d want to hide it…..

    The new world….stupid…..self absorbed…..disgraceful….

  12. im still trying to figure out why JJ is acting like Zach is the only person in the world who takes a selfie…90% of the population is on social media in some way and he felt the need to start something with a guy making his first career start in the pros…of course Zach was excited, it’s a big deal to make it that far and JJ is good enough of a player that he doesnt need to bully a guy who we can all agree wont have the same level of individual success as him…it makes JJ look immature and less likable..and this is coming from a BAMA fan who hates everything Lsu…Zach didn’t start this ridiculousness…

  13. Big words for a guy who is likely to be a backup this season (and most seasons to follow). Never poke the bear, Watt is currently one of the best players in the league, you are a QB who will either be out of the league soon or a career backup.

  14. Agreed. The letter jackets were stupid…but one big distinction. The letter jackets were given to the TEAM, and the whole am wore them. If you want to call it high schoolish talk to Kubiak or Rick Smith.

Zach taking Selfies about being a real, live, NFL QB before the game, is on him.

He’s talking smack now, because he knows he probably won’t have to face Watt anyways.

Texans don’t play TN till Week 8. Mariota will have the starting job by then…and Zach can take selfies of being a real live back-up QB then.

  15. Maybe LSU pulling out a 28-24 come-from-behind victory over Wisconsin to virtually end the Badger season had something to do with this feud

  16. Mettenberger is right about the lettermen jacket. They were made to look like fools when the Patriots pounded the living crap out of them after seeing those things.

  17. You know what’s funny about this is you got a no name done nothing in the NFL player saying this about a proven all pro. Hey Mettenberger you mess with the bull you might get the horns.

  18. Zack Mettenberger better get it all in now because once the season starts he will never be heard from again. His days as a starting QB are over.

  19. One is the best player in the NFL destined for the hall of fame. The other is a bench warmer for the Titans. I mean, come on.
