C.J. Wilson’s father grateful his son is still alive, not thinking football

It’s too soon to know whether the fireworks accident that cost Buccaneers cornerback C.J. Wilson two fingers will cost him his football career.

But his father said his son has something far more valuable than that.

“I’m sure it’s in the back of his mind,” Curtis Wilson, Sr., told WBTV. “For me that really doesn’t matter. My son is alive so God took care of him as far as that. I guess we’ll cross that bridge later on down the road.”

Wilson lost his index and middle fingers on one hand when fireworks exploded in a canister he was holding.

His father wasn’t on the scene when it happened, but said C.J. “was pretty much holding the canister – not trying to hold the fireworks – but the canister that it was supposed to pop out of, . . . well it didn’t pop. It exploded inside the canister.”

One of the dangers of consumer-grade fireworks is that the mortar tubes that are often bought in stores wear out in time and after repeated explosions, which can allow the force of the shells inside to go out to the side rather than up.

But Wilson’s father said his son was in good spirits, despite going through two surgeries already.

“C.J. is doing great. He has a lot of family and friends around him, lots of people coming to send up their prayers. He’s doing good right now,” his father said. “He’s on pain killers. A little bit of pain medicine has him down a little bit but when that wears off – he’s the same old C.J. joking and kidding. . . .

“My son is still living. We just have to take it one day at a time.”

That’s the best news for Wilson and his family, as they process the unknown before them.

  1. I’d like more details on this to know what happened. Did he light some fireworks and they didn’t go off so he then went to take it out of the mortar and it then blew up? If not, why was he holding the mortar after lighting some fireworks?

Funny this guy saying god took care of him. So the god he believes in took care of his son by having fireworks blow off two of his fingers and perhaps ruining his livelihood which in turn maybe ruins his life if he doesn’t have much skill at anything else. Yep, let’s thank god for that. If god could make sure someone doesn’t die then he could make sure fireworks don’t blow off someone’s fingers.

It’s almost like religious people just ignore thinking at times.

  2. OK I think I may see what happened. Instead of the mortar being the issue like Darin mentions, it sounds like he lit a dud (my experience wit home fireworks is you generally stick them in something like a pail of sand and light them) and then went to remove it and it then blew up on him.

If that is the case then I guess it was just a freak accident rather than him doing something stupid.

  3. Never hold the mortar tube! Gosh, some people just never learn. Mortar shells explode inside the tube at an unbelievably high rate. And most mortar tubes are made of 1/8 inch thick (at that!) cardboard.

  4. Cheap explosives are cheap explosives. Some people trust cardboard too much. He’s fortunate his injuries weren’t more severe.

  5. I don’t get how this could be career ending. He lost fingers, not legs, and he’s a corner, not a receiver.

  6. What is the deal with Florida Fireworks and NFL players. Jeez. Two? And they both lost digits? That is beyond conspicuous.

  7. Yeah, it’s best to never hold any fireworks in your hand. Prop it up, light, and run. And for chrissakes, don’t put them on your head.

Best of luck to Wilson and his recovery. JPP needs to take some PR lessons on coming clean instead of hiding injuries, lying to the media and your employers.

God could have protected him in many ways. This accident could change his life, making him realize how lucky he is/was. It could be his first step to becoming a better person. It could have stopped him from having a truly career threatening injury on the football field.
It’s like atheists are so short sighted

  9. Oh yes the old God done good thing again. When will people learn that God is always testing you, he will let things blow up in your hand and see how you cope there after. Russell Wilson said God was just testing him when he threw that pick to Butler. He is always testing. Come on people wake up.

  10. Not trying to be a jerk but he can still work in the NFL.. He will just have to be a guest speaker at the rookie symposium and talk about the dangers of putting your body in harms way since that’s your number priority as a professional athlete.

I’m one of those religous folk who “ignore thinking at times”. A terrible accident destroyed that young athlete’ fingers, not God. Through the mercy of God, the father judges, He preserved his son’s life. The Godless would likely only be left with bitterness as a consequence.

This father has a right to his religious opinion, as you do……… without insults.

  12. God did this??? Has Russell Wilson had trouble with this guy? I know they get a bit chatty…

  13. He should probably ask Russell Wilson what the next chapter is going to be because, you know, Russell has that direct line to the almighty. Since they already chat about mundane things like girlfriend sex and interceptions, then I’m sure he/she can give career advice for eight-fingered people. However, I don’t think professional CB is one of them.

  14. If God is so good, why didn’t he infuse some common sense into the young man before he decided to use fireworks?

  15. “JPP needs to take some PR lessons on coming clean instead of hiding injuries, lying to the media and your employers.”

JPP has no employer. The media has no right to receive updates on JPP without a nod from him.

  16. . The Godless would likely only be left with bitterness as a consequence.

No, the godless (like myself) are smart enough to realise that in this universe of infinite possibilities, anything can happen and there is no puppet master pulling the strings regardless of the outcome. For every CJ Wilson and JPP that think god was looking out for them there’s a drunken idiot lighting fireworks of his head and dying. In your theory, god is picking and choosing who he helps. In mine, its just the cold random nature of the universe.

  17. How absent-minded do you have to be to hold explosives in your hand while the fuse is burning?

And hopefully “God” gave him a great degree from college, he’s going to need it.

Well, he played his senior year [NC State] as a graduate student so I guess that’s covered.

One of the major functions of religion is to provide solace in trying times. With his son hospitalized missing two fingers and his career, which is the culmination of a lifetime of work towards a dream, in jeopardy this man is able to appreciate that his son is still alive and thanks god for that.

Bad things happen all of the time to both the religious and the secular. The religious finding a silver lining and attributing it to the grace of god helps them make sense of a tragedy.

  20. Lott only lost a tip, JPP has made some nice money already, this kid was an undrafted free agent in 2013 trying to hang on in the league.

I hope he get’s fully healthy and lives a long productive life.

  21. I’ve done fireworks shows for events, and all my mortar tubes are fastened down to a board, then clamped to a table, just to add to a more solid base should something go wrong. Hold the tube in my hand? No, no, no…… If you don’t pick up on how much force is in one of those canisters, then you just aren’t paying attention at all.

  22. Fatsolio,
I am sure everyone on this blog can rest easy now that you have figured out why the fireworks misfired AND how God works. That’s been a concern of mine for quite some time and I have been coming to this blog daily to find those answers.

Stick to what you know and that obviously doesn’t include anything about either of those subjects.

  23. God kept him alive. Great. Why did God let him blow his fingers off? God can be a real DB sometimes.

  24. fatsolio….in game 7 this year he would have broken his neck and been paralyzed for life. He would have bought an uber fast car and killed 5 bystanders. He would have ended up with severe brain damage and been an invalid the rest of his life. He would have married some chippy who didn’t really love him, but his money, and took off with his kids and bank account and left him broken and defeated. GOD works in mysterious ways. All HIS works are for the good. Sometimes it’s you atheists who don’t think at all. How nice of you to make severe judgements about a mans faith when you have none. No one knows what the future holds. Certainly not you. Someone will take his place. That person may need the money more for his ailing family. You don’t, and didn’t think. sometimes it’s better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you a fool than open it and leave no doubt.

  25. slapshot(others)…..it’s called “free will”. You make your own life, and GOD intercedes when you ask, or if it will enhance HIS plan. The universe need not be cold. GOD provides the warmth. All you need to do is ask HIM. P.S. HE is no puppet master. HE allows us the freedom to choose. HE intercedes when asked to. HIS existance is obvious. You have chosen wrongly. You are responsible for all your choices. Choose wisely.

  26. I found it very odd today that of the four programs on sports radio I listen to at work and the dozens of half hourly ‘Updates’ – I only heard Wilson’s name come up one show and that was a rant on the stupidity of excessive personal fireworks.

True, he isn’t the ‘name’ Jason Pierre-Paul is, but, damn, what does a guy gotta do to get a mention on the national airwaves if blowing off two fingers won’t do it?

  27. All you God haters go ahead and continue to do what you do. Things happen for a reason, and when it’s your time to go, you will go. If it’s not, you won’t. There are many things that happen that are unexplained.

Bad things happen all the time. One thing is certain God is always in control.

Those that don’t believe in God I feel sorry for you. Judgement day will come and hell is real and God will determine if you go there or not.

I don’t care what bad things happen to me, I will always have faith in God. he is in control. People who have had a God Experience will understand why I say that.
