Calvin Johnson’s deal at the heart of NFLPA’s collusion concerns

Getty Images

Yes, the NFLPA is investigating whether the Broncos and Cowboys have colluded in connection with their negotiations regarding long-term offers for receiver Demaryius Thomas and receiver Dez Bryant, respectively. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the suspicions flow from a mutual rejection by both teams of Calvin Johnson’s contract with the Lions.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, both teams have taken the position that proposals made on behalf of the players are too high, explaining that Johnson’s deal doesn’t reflect the receiver market because that contract was influenced by the salary-cap numbers generated by Johnson’s enormous rookie contract from 2007, four years before the launch of the current rookie wage scale.

That coincidence hardly would be enough to prove collusion standing alone. Any team trying to negotiate a fair deal for a receiver would resist paying Calvin Johnson money ($16 million per year) simply because Johnson’s deal was driven by other factors.

In this case, the source tells PFT that the NFLPA has credible information the Broncos and Cowboys have been communicating to set, control, or manipulate the relevant market — elite receivers who entered the league in 2010. Of course, nothing prevents the players and their agents from comparing notes and devising strategies; Thomas and Bryant soon will be represented by the same firm, given reports that Todd France (who represents Thomas) will be joining CAA (which represents Bryant).

But while it’s fair for players and agents to work together to push the market higher, teams can’t work together to keep the market lower.

If collusion between the Broncos and Cowboys occurred, it was unnecessary. Regardless of where the market is or where it’s going, the Broncos and Cowboys currently control the rights to Thomas and Bryant, and their long-term value should be driven not by what Johnson got from the Lions or what an elite receiver would make on the open market but by the reality that the tag will pay them each more than $28 million over the next two years.

There’s also an argument to be made that the receiver market will soon soften, given the new supply of game-ready wideouts who are more prepared than ever before after catching so many more passes in college, high school, and at the 7-on-7 camps that have proliferated to encourage quarterback development.

Either way, the Broncos and Cowboys should be smart enough to independently understand the realities of the market, to place a fair value on the receivers, and to either work out long-term deals or employ them under the tag for 2015. Communicating and coordinating regarding the issue adds nothing, other than the fresh headache that both teams will now have to deal with as the July 15 deadline looms for working out long-term deals with franchise-tagged players.

Regardless of whether the credible evidence of collusion ever becomes a finding of collusion, the emergence of this suspicion could be aimed at breaking whatever impasse currently exists between the Broncos and Thomas and the Cowboys and Bryant. After Wednesday, when the time period for signing franchise-tagged players to multi-year deals expires, it won’t matter.

Over the next five days, the threat of a potential collusion case could help break the logjam.

  1. He the real mvp. These franchises don’t care about their players. Look after yourself. Calvin and Larry put a good example for the next crop of elite WR’s get your money while you can

  2. If the Broncos would have done the smart thing and cut Peyton Manning already, the money for Thomas would not be an issue.

  3. Something smells fishy about the Dez Bryant situation…he’s the best WR in the game! You can’t name any other position where the best in the game doesn’t have a contract. Pay the man!

  4. “The season can’t get here soon enough…”

    I will only disagree with you on account that would mean that summer is over, but otherwise hell to the yeah.

  5. WRs are a dime a dozen. How many super bowls have the Lions been to? I wouldn’t let anything they do influence me. WRs are fun to watch. Take Julio Jones for example. The Falcons traded up high into the first round to get him, and what did they get in return? A fired head coach and a demoted GM. Lol. Do you think smart coaches and GMs want to get fired? Are you crazy. WRs are a dime a dozen. Do you want me to repeat that again? WRs are a dime a dozen. Tom Brady just won his fourth super bowl, and all he’s ever had was a bunch of free agent WRs on those super bowl winners.

  6. Yeah clearly shows how much Calvin was way way overpaid.. these new cats think they can surpass those numbers, don’t let one idiot franchise well AZ may also be guilty of that to cloud your judgement.

  7. “Tom Brady just won his fourth super bowl, and all he’s ever had was a bunch of free agent WRs on those super bowl winners.”
    ==================================
    true, for the most part, but Branch (the MVP for that 3rd ring) was a 2nd round pick.

  8. I’d say the Lions have had the worst luck of any team in terms of the rookie wage scale. They drafted Calvin, Stafford, and Suh right before the wage scale was put in place, forcing them to pay a ridiculous amount to each if they wanted to keep them. Didn’t stop them from going 11-5 though.

  9. Just another couple of NFL teams cheating. What’s new? The Broncos are probably the biggest cheaters over the last 25 years so this is nothing surprising. Horse face Elway knows no other way

  10. As a Lions fan, I hate to say this: no way Calvin Johnson does not end up a cap casualty before that comtract is finished. Then he will leave to go play with .

    Hey, Pats fans, how would you like to see CJ and TB12 on the field together?

    I just hope he does not end up on a divisional rival…

  11. Calvin Johnson’s contract is terrible, and is one reason the Lions had to let Suh go. It’s stupid to give a receiver that kind of money.

  12. CJ’s contract is out of whack. It was re-done, as was Larry Fitzgerald’s contract, because they were drafted high under the old rookie salary structure. Plus, it really hurts that CJ has not played great since the new contract.

    I repeat this: if the Cowboys can franchise Dez and pay him less than what the new contract would cost them, why wouldn’t they do it? From what I understand, Dez sees the franchise numbers as minimum salaries over the next 2 years for what he wants in a new contract. If that is accurate, what benefit is it for the Cowboys to give him a 5 year contraxt?

    As a business, it is better for the Cowboys to even franchise him for the next 2 years, have a very highly motivated Dez play hard, and then see where the cap and numbers are then.

  13. These guys get paid to sale tickets. Now back when players played for RINGS it wasn’t so much about the $$$. Just think about all the guys in the NFL in the last 5 years that have signed a hundred million dollar contract. How many of them have won a SB? So just enjoy the sport, cause its the best game in the world. And if you’re going to make a comment make it about the game. And how the player performs on the field. Cause some of you sound like some soap opera queens. These guys are gladiators. They want to get paid for their minds, body and some of their sole they give up every Sunday for us blood thirsty fans. And I did say US. So get as much as you can wile you can. At least this way you’ll have $$ to take care of yourself when you’re 70 and can’t remember your kids names. ” Think about it”

  14. “I’d say the Lions have had the worst luck of any team in terms of the rookie wage scale. Didn’t stop them from going 0-16 neither! They went 11-5 once in 50 years dude. The Lions are terrible and Calvin is wasted talent on that team, Stafford is overpaid is the same caliber as Cutler and now they’re real screwed cuz they lost Suh.

  15. I don’t see the Patriots mentioned yet in these stories, so this must be the kind of cheating that doesn’t matter.

  16. Randy Moss hardly a scrap heap pickup nor was Wes Welker. Having Gronk takes pressure off his WRs
    ————————————————————-
    Neither Welker or Moss won Super Bowls. Gronk has won one.
    Receivers with more than one: David Givens, Troy Brown, David Patten. Not exactly a murderers row.

    =================

    I think that is the point. when Brady had big time receivers in Moss and Welker he won zero rings. As long as you have a good defense, you can win with “average” wide receivers. There is no reason in todays NFL to spend big money on RBs or WRs. Just the way it is

    It would be nice, but we got Mr. Lafell for $9m.

    A star WR is extremely exciting to watch but TB12 won all 4 of his SB without a start WR.

  19. Salaries need to be slotted in, just like rookies are now. Look
    at the problems solved. Screw agents. Look at the stats. Make it simple. Make millions and go home happy. CJ was never the receiver Randy was and got more money than he ever deserved!

  20. Unless all the Patriots Haters are hypocrites they’ll be screaming bloody murder about this type of cheating that truly impacts the integrity of the game

    And those are the only 2 SB’s that Brady lost in. Randy and Wes have the same number of rings as Calvin, Dez, and Thomas.

  22. This smacks of simply a negotiating tactic on the part of the reps for the players. Leak word that there has been “collusion”, get some stupid members of the public on your side, and hope that it gives you the final leverage in the battle to get the contract you want for your players.

  23. They are going to get paid, wr’s like Megatron, Weapon X, DeMaryius , Juluo and Aj aren’t normal Wr’s they are the cream of the crop

  24. I don’t believe collusion for one second. There is no way the Broncos would ever pay Thomas CJ money. They would let Thomas play on the franchise tag this season and let him walk next year before they paid him that money and nobody including the fans would have a problem with that because this is more than likely Peyton Mannings last year and the Broncos would be starting over with whoever the next qb is going to be anyway. This is nothing but frustration coming from the players and their agents because there has been no momentum in getting a long term deal signed.

  25. The NFLPA cries collusion every time a team plays hardball in negotiations. And teams have been found to have colluded, oh, about zero times.

  26. That’s a far cry from collusion. Sounds like a fishing expedition by the NFLPA. If they had concrete proof, they would be in front of a judge and not a reporter.

  27. I will believe there is collusion if your source will come out from under his rock.

  28. Another example is Joe Montana. He won the super bowl two out of his first three seasons as the 49ers starting QB. The only year he didn’t win, 1983, is when the refs screwed the 49ers at RFK stadium. One of the most blatant screw jobs in sports history. So it was almost as if Montana couldn’t lose. And he had Dwight Clark, a 10th round pick, Freddie Solomon a free agent pick up, Mike Wilson who was picked up off waivers after Dallas cut him, and Mike Shuman, a slow white guy. After gong 18-1 in 1985, the 49ers then drafted Jerry Rice. Guess what? They didn’t win a single playoff game in each of Rice’s first three seasons. And Montana was virtually unbeatable before Rice. They got away from playing 49ers football and started force feeding their new superstar WR. Rice put up big numbers, but the playoff and super bowl wins stopped. Montana and the 49ers would eventually go on to win two more super bowls with Rice, but nowhere near the success rate that they enjoyed prior to drafting Rice. I love great WRs as much as the next guy, but like I said before, they’re a dime a dozen. I didn’t count the 1982 strike shortened season because some of the games were played with truck drivers and carpenters in uniform.

  29. Alright Goodell – let’s see you demand the cellphones of those owners

    If they’ve got nothing to hide they’ll turn them over, won’t they?

    All those jealous anti-Patriots players will be demanding action from you – otherwise it will prove they’re all hypocrites, turning a blind eye to this and getting enraged about deflated footballs that weren’t actually deflated

    And if Goodell doesn’t demand their cellphones then we know HE too is a hypocrite (like we needed proof)

  30. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the suspicions flow from a mutual rejection by both teams of Calvin Johnson’s contract with the Lions.

    Really, though. Is it collusion? Maybe, we’re all spoiled with the information available to us (thanks again!) and the “DUH!” factor of signing Calvin Johnson to a contract of those proportions..

    This is a GREAT case study for the very near future.

    KUDOS “Vacation” Mike.

  31. Problem here is, Dez an Thomas are very very good. They are not Calvin Johnson. Nobody is.

    Aim a little bit lower.

  32. The people on this thread are crazy….Brady had his best statistical season with Randy Moss, and it took a miracle from the Giants to wrestle that Super Bowl away. The 49rs’ Dynasty in the 80’s had Jerry Rice and The Cowboys Dynasty in the 90’s had Michael Irvin. Also The Steelers had Lynn Swann in the 70’s.

    I’m not saying Dez and Demaryius should get Calvin Johnson money. Heck, Calvin didn’t even deserve that much money, but to say elite WRs aren’t part of Super Bowl winning teams is ridiculous. And don’t forget, Tom Brady won his last Super Bowl with arguably the best TE in history, so it’s not as if his passing corps was average at all.

  33. It’s almost impossible to prove. The owners collude over martinis. What are they going to do, call the bartender as a witness?

  34. So the Broncos and the Cowboys do not want to overpay for a WR and that’s collusion … lol.
    I think the NFL needs to change the rules back to the old days where the WRs have to fight just to get down the field.
    How many rookie WRs put up great numbers?
    Brady has no problems winning with average WRs.

  35. It’s time for Elway and Jerry Jones to hand over their cell phones. That’s the way Roger likes to handle things.

  36. Elway wasn’t just on the teams the Bronco’s got caught cheating the salary caps, he was one of the players they were paying under the table.

    He knows how to cheat, that’s for sure.

  37. The real problem is this…the rookie wage scales, etc that were made to pay avg players more instead only overpaid superstars even more.
    Secondly Dez and Thomas are not as good as Calvin and never will be.

  38. Dez and Thomas are among the next best thing like the Jets ends are to Watt but they’re really on different levels.

  39. “Randy Moss hardly a scrap heap pickup”

    That’s exactly what he was after he had a terrible couple of years with the Raiders. Do you think Belichick would have signed him otherwise? Belichick got Moss cheap.

  40. These teams must be colluding this wouldn’t be a ploy by the players’ agents (who probably are colluding themselves) to try to get their player signed. Couldn’t be! But Patriot fans are desperate to have news that show other teams cheating and other fans that hate the Cowboys and Broncos that they will accept allegations of impropriety no matter if there is no proof whatsoever that the allegations have any merit! Pathetic people, Pathetic!

  42. I think it is two things in combination. 1. Supply and demand. There have been a lot of talented WR rookies coming out and starting for a couple million per year for 4 years. And, 2. The desire for guaranteed money. That money has to be put in escrow by the team. We’re talking 40 to 60 million that they no longer have access to. Salary is paid in installments so has less impact on team finances. Interestingly, Broncos could have drafted Dez but took Thomas due to personal concerns with Dez. Dez went, I think, two picks later.

  43. The issue isn’t that these two players are overpaid or not worth what they are asking for. The issue is if the teams communicated in order to set or manipulate the market which would obviously be cheating.

    —————————————————————-

    LOL sorry but the Pats are the poster child for cheating in pro sports period, never mind just the NFL.

  45. Get back to original issue here. Collusion. They’re saying that Jerry Jones and John Elway conspired to hold WR salaries down, and their proof is that the Detroit Lions paid a lot of money for Calvin Johnson. But they’re leaving out the part about Jerry Jones winning 3 super bowls with a first ballot HOF QB, and John Elway being a first ballot HOF QB and winner of multiple super bowls. Doesn’t it make more sense that the Detroit Lions, who have never been to a super bowl, should be following the lead of those who have, rather than the other way around? Obviously, Dallas and Denver are trying to win super bowls. The Ford family, not so much. If any team out there is trying model their way of doing business after the Detroit Lions, that would be the biggest story of the century, and the most laughable.

    ~~~~~~~~~
    Actually, I would be much more satisfied if this turns out to be yet another example of false accusations, just like deflategate.
  47. What would Belichick do?
    He would never tie up 10% of salary cap on one player who might touch the ball 6 times on a very good day.
    He would never use a premium first round draft pick for a player that might touch the ball 6 times on a very good day.
    The NFL’s one true unstoppable force on offense is Belichick’s TE…the Gronk…who catches 6 balls and one TD per game and run blocks with devestation…..at a 50% cost of what these WR divas desire.
    As usual….Belichick shows the league how to win….yet the ringless ignore his lessons. Jerry has his own formula for mediocrity and he refuses to change
  48. It wouldn’t be a problem if the players in question could indeed test the free market to see what their true worth is but franchising them takes the players negotiating leverage away.
  49. I remember Dez saying he’s as good as Megatron (though he denies saying those exact words), but unfortunately for him, that was the week Mega put up 329yds on the ‘Boys.
  50. Haters gonna hate, hate, hate. 81 continue to dominate this league and bring us that SB to the D!!! Go Lions!!!
  51. “Haters gonna hate, hate, hate. 81 continue to dominate this league and bring us that SB to the D!!! Go Lions!!!”
    It’s common knowledge that Calvin is a waste of roster spot on the pitiful Lions! The Lions will never with Stafford. Should have kept Suh, your defense will struggle without him.
  52. @the guy without an original thought.
    It’s common knowledge that you have never watched more than lions highlights and have minimum to no insight about this team. With that being said, Megatron will continue to dominate and the Lions will win a SB in the next 3 years! All you haters will see…
  53. No he’s 100%, Calvin Johnson is wasted talent and will never win anything on the Lions. You must be in a fantasy land if you think the Lions have some kind of dominating, winning history. They have choke playoff losses and an 0-16 season since Calvin has been there.
    Just take a deep breath and let that settle in and block out your delusion.
    So what if Calvin dominates stats in the league if the team sucks? Doesn’t get you anywhere….LoL!
  54. “@the guy without an original thought.”
    Yea because no has ever said “Haters gonna hate, hate, hate.”
    I don’t know if you noticed, but you just missed you window in the playoffs last year. You lost Suh and Fairley, that was the anchor of your team(unfortunately a WR is not going to carry a team) and Stafford is way to inconsistent.
    I have sunday ticket and watch all the games when ever I want, nice failed assumption there genius, kinda like your SB in the next 3 years assumption, absolutely hilarious to hear your pipe dreams from a fan of terrible team.
  55. Do I really need to say to you again that Fairley had almost nothing to do with our top ranked D last year? If you actually watched the games like you say you do, you would have realized he didn’t dress for 75% of the games due to injury. Good talk!
  56. Suh and Fairley were clearly the most important part of Detroit’s defense. Without those to guys, their run game will suffer significantly. Detroit will be lucky to finish 3rd in the division.
  57. Calvin made sure no one questioned whether he was worth the money on and off the field. On the other hand, Dez Bryant couldn’t learn a play book and is an idiot off the field.
