Greg Hardy suspension reduced to four games

AP

The long wait for arbitrator Harold Henderson’s ruling on Cowboys defensive end Greg Hardy’s appeal is over.

Henderson has upheld the suspension originally handed down by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, but Hardy’s ban has been slashed from 10 games down to four. Hardy was suspended as a result of his arrest last year on charges of domestic violence. He was convicted of the charges in a bench trial, but exercised his right to have a jury trial and the charges were dismissed when Hardy’s ex-girlfriend Nicole Holder failed to appear.

The question now for Hardy, who was also inactive for 15 games last season while on the Commissioner’s exempt list, is whether he will pursue a further reduction in court. Hardy and the NFLPA contend that the NFL retroactively applied new rules governing domestic violence adopted after Hardy’s arrest, with the two-game suspension originally given to former Ravens running back Ray Rice standing as an example of the way discipline was meted out before that suspension touched off heavy criticism that sent the NFL down the road to making changes to the system.

Hardy’s contract with the Cowboys calls for him to be paid $578,125 per game when he is active. That makes Friday’s decision a lucrative one for Hardy even if he doesn’t make a courtroom push to get back on the field even sooner. Under the current suspension, Hardy will be eligible to return to the lineup for Dallas’s Week Five home game against the Patriots.

  1. hardy tried to kill that woman. this guy doesn’t belong in the league to begin with.
incredible that hurting a woman has the same punishment as air in a football

  2. As a Cowboys I’m happy with that. Let’s face it what he did was awful and I’m sure everyone including Cowboys fans would agree. He could try to get it down to 2, but 4 seems reasonable. I thought it would be 6 actually.

  3. Oo boy, I wonder if he’ll fight that. Either way, the Pats, Giants, Seahawks, and Eagles just all let out a collective groan.

  4. probably fair and he should take his medicine having said that if he appeals to court it will move to 2 weeks

  5. It’s about time they made a ruling. He should still fight for just a 2 game suspension as was mandated at the time of the alleged incident!!!!

  6. Well now there’s no doubt that Brady suspension will get reduced but by how much?

Gotta be 1,2 or 3 games. Can’t be zero because the rest of the league would flip and can’t be 4 because there’s no way get Goodell wants to defend matching suspensions for these infractions/”infractions”.

  7. Beat your girlfriend, throw her on a bed full of guns, intimidate her so she doesn’t show up in court. 4 games.

Maybe, possibly, could have, we are not really sure that you tampered with the air in footballs, but we didn’t mark the PSI and the officials didn’t keep track of the balls -4 games

AND we’re going to destroy your reputation in the process.

Because Goddell only cares about the Integrity of the game

  8. Still too many games for someone who wasn’t convicted of anything and already missed 15 games. Gonna have some pass rush this season!

  9. Another slap to the face to domestic violence victims and another example of how the NFL is just a joke of an organization who has little respect for anyone other then there own bottom line.

  10. Actually, now we get to see if he was just blowing smoke when he swore he would fight anything more than 2 games.

And this has nothing to do with Brady’s suspension.

  11. For you morons out there being critical of Goodell, this wasn’t his decision. Henderson reduced the suspension, not Goodell. It’s a bit confusing with the way the article is worded saying the suspension was upheld by Henderson and then reduced.

Probably in a hurry or just worded incorrectly to drive comments

  12. I hate the cowboys now more than ever. My favorite memory of last season was seeing that dez Bryant non catch correctly ruled on replay and hearing the whining noises all the way from Dallas.

  13. I’m waiting for those cowboys fans with some backbone to actually get angry that they reduced his suspension since he tried to kill that woman. I’m sure they’ll just pass on comment because they have zero morals on that team.

  14. Court says he did nothing, so he did nothing. Stop trying to blame the NFL blame the court if they did their job Hardy would be in prison.

He was convicted in the court of a law. He lost in a bench trial by a judge. LEARN SOME FACTS BEFORE YOU TALK LIKE AN IGNORANT FOOL WITH NO EMPATHY! Dumb North Carolina laws and paying off the victim and being rich are the only reason he isn’t in PRISON! Anyone who supports this guy is a horrible human being who is going to hell.. LOSERS!

  16. He was convicted of the charges in a bench trial….

So a convicted woman beater in US Court, who paid off the woman for a no-show with a jury, gets his suspension reduced six games.

And Rodger Goodell is concerned with integrity?

I hope Goodell upholds Brady’s suspension just so that Brady & US Courts can destroy Goodell & Well$.

  17. Hardly seems fair to guys like Ray Rice and A. Peterson who ended up being crucified in comparison. Just because of a crazy Carolina law that allowed him to pay off the female he assaulted and then she disappears, he was convicted in a court of law by an objective impartial judge who more often gets things right than does a jury who too often drinks the spiked kool-aid that defense lawyers dish out. Hardy was convicted by a judge of a felony and gets 4 games, Rice was never charged and gets life, Peterson a misdemeanor and gets a 1yr suspension. It’s unfortunate that the majority of NFL owners get dumped on by Goodell but owners like Jerry Jones, Pat Bowlen and Kraft get preferred treatment. If Hardy’s suspension was reduced to 4 gms. , I can hardly wait to hear that Goodell will be financially rewarding Brady and the Pats for the inconvenience he has caused them. What a crock!!!

  18. If Tom Brady’s is not reduced or completely eliminated… we know the fix was in. (I believe it still (was) is).

I mean … the evidence against Hardy was glaring… We all saw what he did. The Well’s report is at its best inconclusive…

  19. For everyone that is comparing this case to Deflate gate. The comissioner didn’t punish Brady for the action of deflating the football or telling someone to. He punished brady for not owning up to his mistake like a man and saying he did it. Instead Brady tried to hide everything.

Hardy deserved more games then 4 for what he did no question about that. However, Brady deserves four games for having no integrity.

  20. That will be a very potent pass rush in Dallas. Comical to see Giants, Eagles, and Skin fans on here whining. Get your running shoes RG3, Eli and Sam. The Kraken has been released..

  21. Cowboy’s rec’d two gifts this year. Hardy and Collin’s. Collin’s should have been sent to this past weeks supplemental.

  22. I repeat greg hardy is one lucky sob. He beat the crap out of his finance then threw her on a bed full of guns some of which are assault rifles that were illegal.

If not for a broken judicial system in NC where you basically need to be convicted two times he was able to get off after time passed and he paid the woman off to not show up to court.

Hardy should be black balled same as rice, just read the police report much much worse than rice striking his finance bc hardy was beating on her not just a punch.. Hardy got paid time off last season so he never really was punished..

Here’s to a blown out knee hardy! Cheers NFL way to embarrass yourself again.

  23. Four games is fair punishment. It also affords the Panthers the chance to earn a comp pick from this fiasco. Ten games would have nixed that.

I actually gave you a thumbs up on this cuz that’s a good point but in fairness, I think he got paid many millions of $ for sitting last year.

  25. First of all, let me say that I think Hardy is a terrible person.

Having said that, this ruling I’d wrong.

Right, wrong or indifferent, the penalty at the time the offense was committed was two games.

Hardy would win the appeal in the courts.

    Absolutely nonsensical.

  32. 1.) Goodell should be fired.

2.) All fines & Draft Picks against the Patriots restored

    3.) Brady’s suspensions rescinded.

4.) Brady also gets four ‘GET OUT OF SUSPENSION – FREE’ cards from the NFL to be used anytime or can be passed on to any team player(s) of his choice.

5.) Mortensen and all the crybaby networks, QB’s etc., are made to give EQUAL air time in admitting they are incompetent and falsely accused Brady.

  33. Funny that Hardy got an independent arbiter and Brady did not.

I don’t mind if Goodell says Brady’s stays at 4 games. That means it’s off to court we go!

And then when Kessler asks for discovery on Goodells, Gardi’s, Grigson’s, Kensil’s and Well’s text messages the excuses and spin from Patriot Hater ought to be a hoot!

I can’t wait to read it and laugh! 🙂

  34. beating up a woman

    equals

being generally aware that someone (maybe) wanted to take an immeasurably small amount of air out of some footballs, but apparently didn’t.

  35. Jesus. For all you bozos equating Hardy’s reduction to 4 games the same as Brady’s 4 games, let me clarify. Goodell gave Hardy 10 games, Goodell gave Brady 4.

The 4 game reduction for Hardy came via an arbitration ruling, not from Goodell.

It is not as if Goodell gave both players 4 game suspensions. Quit comparing the two as if he had.

  36. Bound to happen. As much of a scumbag as Hardy is, he committed the crime before the new domestic violence policy was in place. Considering that, the 4 games is fair.

Congrats Greg, you dodged a bullet. Lets see if you can dodge karma as well.

  38. What’s interesting here is do you think the Giants would now be interested in Hardy after JPP essentially blew his hand off… I have a feeling other teams would be just as interested in hardy now if their situation/circumstances dictated they need to make a move. Talking about morals in sports is ridiculous. I wish all teams had Steph Curry’s ; JJ Watts and high class guys… But C’mon man… Look at the people you live around… Watch the local news… Sports and our work places are really no different… Drama everywhere, people not treating each other right in so many ways… Welcome to life. Brady did just fine against Suh last year. Put up 34 points on his team in fact.

I don’t think he’s shaking in his pads at anyone. 🙂

  40. So, Henderson agrees with Goodell’ determination that Hardy did something warranting a suspension but, he thinks his own judgment is better and reduced the length to four games. I’d think his rationale would be an important part of this story.

Absent a specific rule or criterion, an appeal should focus on whether or not the suspension was justified. If it was justified, as this ruling shows, and there is no set limit identified, the suspension should remain as originally imposed. Does the arbiter have the authority to ADD more games to the suspension? If not, he shouldn’t be able to reduce the number either. Just focus on whether a suspension is warranted and whether or not the suspension imposed is within the parameters outlined in the CBA. These appeal decisions that reduce the number of games seem like a pacifier to get the players to just shut up.

    Suh?

    Who is talking about him?

You are comparing one of the best defensive ends in the game to a defensive tackle who has never had more than 9.5 sacks?

    You are clueless

  42. Learn the facts of the case before you all spew stupidity bc of your jealousy of the best organization in pro sports (you’re on here talking about them…constantly. So don’t try to defend yourselves).

HE called the cops on her.
Officer that arrived stated no way he tried to hurt her or he easily would have.
Her friend testified she told her earlier that night ‘he hasn’t seen crazy yet’.
Her friend also invoked her 5th amendment right when asked if she did cocaine w the ‘victim’ that night.
Prosecution had her sworn statements and admitted they couldn’t move forward (bc they knew they couldn’t win)

But I guess she couldn’t just be trying to get rich quick. Women don’t do that these days.

And if she didn’t care enough to follow through with it I’m baffled that all you losers out there actually pretend to care.

Get over it. The Boys are back and will be for quite some time so get used to it.

  43. This is not about the crime, it’s about the random punishments handed down be the NFL.

So let’s say tonight you get pulled over after having 1 drink and you blow a 0.04, he officer lets you go because you are under the current limit allowed by law. Then 2 months later your state legislator enacts a law that now anything above 0.02 is against the law and carrys a manatory sentance of 90 days in jail, and yes if you have broken this law in the past 12 months you are guilty and goind to jail.

I guess by some of your logic this is fair.

  44. What’s with the references to Hardy and Brady, right now Brady can’t even play in that game, it’s his team’s 4th.

  45. @ bigbenh8tr
“Objective and Impartial Judge” – my Arse. Did you ever read her back ground? She’s was a womens right advocate all the way back in college- she practically begged to have this case in front of her.

The DA could have still prosecuted Greg hardy, but he did not … WHY, you ask? Because he had “SERIOUS” contentions to Miss Holder’s credibility. If you actually read ALL the facts in the case, there wouldn’t have been a court in the country that could have prosecuted him.

I dare you, I double dog dare you to read the actual FACTS that were in the case.

Neanderthal people always believing you are guilty until proven innocent, without themselves, taking the time to read the case.

I hope you NEVER EVER serve on a jury

  46. I hope some of you know why this guy was found not guilty.

He should feel lucky not to be in prison and giving up his football career instead of serving a 4-game suspension.

It makes me want to puke.

  47. Stop comparing Hardy to Brady. One is a legal issue the other is an NFL issue. In a court of law Hardy should be in jail and Tom no legal action. In the NFL Tom absolutely deserves a harsher punishment b/c he completely screwed the integrity of the game and put a season and possibly a career in doubt. NFL should punish Tom much harder than Hardy. Not to mention when hardy commited this crime there was a set punishment laid out by the NFL so they should honor that. There is no set punishment for cheating the game the way Brady did.

  48. All you talking out the side of your neck, when if your teams knew what he was going to get as far as suspension would’ve signed him,but now cause Jerry was smart enough to sign him all you mad but would’ve cheered if your team would’ve so STHU , also know damn well Brady will get one game for cheating. I don’t agree with what Hardy did but they is only two people who truly know what when on in that room, we had a coked up money grubbing female, who had on two other occasions claim men abused her and walked away with a pot of money ( ask Money Mayweather) and who the hell calls 911 on himself when he supposedly just beat the hell out of his woman, but I promise she will surface again once that money runs out. Henderson reduced his suspension when Hardy had his day in Court, cause most men know once a man stands in court in front a Female Judge for abuse or child support you’re are DONE.

  49. The CBA s between the NFLPA and the owners, not Goodell. The ridiculously short suspension is a result of a union never admitting that one of their members deserve to be punished. Goodell gave him 10 games. Goodell did not reduce the suspension.

As to Deflategate? I believe Tom Brady is 100% guilty of asking his “deflator” to do his bidding. Did it affect outcomes of games? Probably not too much. Almost surely it was a psychological advantage to Brady. He then (and continues) to lie about it. Four games is just right.

  50. The second comment says it was attempted murder. See how rumors get spread? Now everyone that clicks the article will assume that as fact. If it was attempted murder, he would be banned. Christ.

Either way, the scumbag shouldn’t have anything reduced.

  51. It should only be 2 games!! Im not saying i agree but the league rules that were in place at the time of the event clearly called for a 2 game suspension?

Tampering with footballs clearly violates NFL rules. I can only think of one reason why Brady should not be punished for telling someone to deflate footballs in violation of the rules, and that would be because if he didn’t do it. So, if Brady is only being punished for not owning up to his “mistake” as minson15 suggests, it can only mean one thing. His punishment is for refusing to admit to something he didn’t do.

Welcome to justice … NFL style.

  55. For all you people up in arm about this, do something about it. Stop posting on a football blog and instead give up football for a year. Send a clear message to the NFL that you won’t stand for this by doing the only thing that will get to the NFL, through their wallets. But, of course, you won’t. You’d rather stand on your moral high ground through a website comment instead of actually giving up something you love.

Cowboys, tied for 5th in the lowest number of player arrests since 2000. But they are morally bankrupt? How does your team rank? And for the record Viking fan with high morals, your team has had 48 arrests since 2000, 31 more than the Cowboys, and the highest in the league. But the Cowboys have issues?

  56. As an eagles fan, from a football perspective.. Also anyone supporting someone like this or AP or Ray Rice, your pretty disgusting… Sorry but you are..

  57. Should have been zero. He didn’t do anything except have a coke head former girlfriend. There are plenty of stories from the Charlotte Observer available online no need to believe me. The worst thing he did was think that a few bucks would make this story go away. He would have been found innocent (different than ‘not guilty) if this thing went to court. She lied many times, including twice to police. The prosecutors would have continued on but wouldn’t dare ‘vouch’ for the truthfulness of her statements. Guess they didn’t want to be disbarred.

    How were his stats inflated?
He was 1 of 2 pro bowlers on that defense. Eagles fan are hilarious, they think AP will be great but not Hardy who has apparently has been the best place at OTAs/Minicamp.

Eagles will win 7 games max (4 of those being vs the Giants and Redskins)

  59. Did you know that at the first preliminary hearing, Miss Holder testified that her bruises were from Hardy throwing her into the bath tub with no mention of a futon piled with Guns?

At the bench trial her bruises came from the futon of guns and no mention of the bath tub?

She instigated the matter, Hardy didnt want to talk to her- she repeatedly called Sammy Curtis (Hardy’s manager who was present that night) earlier in the day.

She went there with the intention to cause trouble or in her very own words as stated in the testimony of her best friend, Laura Iwanicki, ‘He hasn’t seen crazy yet.’

Come on guys- they are not always guilty

  60. For those saying that Hardy’s & Brady’s suspensions “are the same”, I think it would be perfectly acceptable for the NFL to reduce Brady’s 4 game suspension to zero if (and only if)they then added him to the Commissioner’s Exempt list for the first 15 games of next season. That would be fine…wouldn’t it Patriot fans?!

  61. Seriously? After what Hardy did, he only gets four games?

I expect Brady to start opening night, which would be great news for the NFL and NBC. This reduction sets that up beautifully.

Roger Goodell needs to be fired over this one.

  62. Hardy’s & Brady’s scenarios are 2 completely different things & 1 cannot be compared to the other. Hardy sat out 15 games last year & he will sit out another 4 this year, for a non-football related incident. Brady cheated in numerous games across multiple years, affecting the integrity of the game. There are victims in both cases & he is 100% equally deserving of a harsh punishment.

  63. 4 games doesnt even mesh the CBA at time. 2 games max should be penalty

Listen that ho was a gold digger looking to get paid. Now she is traveling the country she is sooooo traumatized by the incident.

Gimme a break. Take the NFL to court to get it resuced or eliminated completely

  64. For everyone that is comparing this case to Deflate gate.

There is more evidence of absolute guilt of Tom Brady than of Greg Hardy.

The Patriots ball boys had only one reason to tamper with the footballs, the direction of Tom Brady.
There is no other possible reason.

Nicole Holder had exactly one million reasons to fabricate a story of domestic violence
    by Greg Hardy.

  65. You judgmental people make me sick. None of us could possibly understand the implications of what transpired between Ms. Holder and Mr. Hardy. NONE OF US. Unless you were part of the prosecution in this case or of the defense you don’t know jack about what transpired.

    We do know the following:
There was a physical altercation between Ms. Holder and Mr. Hardy.
The altercation climaxed with Mr. Hardy tossing/throwing/pushing Ms. Holder onto a futon that had an assortment of weapons on it.
    Mr. Hardy called 911.
Mr. Hardy was arrested for assaulting Ms. Holder.

    Now the following questions:
Did he kill Ms. Holder? No
Did Ms. Holder sustain life threatening injuries? No
Did Ms. Holder get physical with Mr. Hardy? Yes
Did Mr. Hardy get physical with Ms. Holder? Yes
Did Ms. Holder take money from Mr. Hardy in exchange for silencing her testimony? Yes

In conclusion, this turned into a civil matter when Ms. Holder accepted money from Mr. Hardy. Now if she was so traumatized by the events that transpired during the altercation and she strongly felt that justice needed to be served than she wouldn’t have accepted such an offer from Mr. Hardy. Thee End. Ms. Holder made her decision to X the criminal court out of this altercation. There is no more debate and no more speculation that needs to be made. Now if you want to Gossip about it. Proceed.

If you were really any where near as self-righteous as all your post suggest you wouldn’t even be a football fans right now.

This guy Hardy is a disgrace but he isn’t the first and won’t be the last and all the self-righteous hypocrites will continue watching NFL!

  70. The other day when Packers TE Andrew Quarless was in trouble for firing a gun into the air, I tried to point out that much worse behavior is tolerated by teams like the Cowboys, 49ers, Vikings, etc. and nobody wanted to hear it.

    What say you now?

  71. So beating a woman and threatening to kill her with guns on a bed is the same as never being proven of deflating a football? Fire Fuhrer Goodell !

  72. Technically it’s a 20 game suspension (16 games paid) since he didn’t play at all last year.

  73. Although Brady should not have been suspended at all, this will have no effect on his appeal. Goodell is the arbitrator, and any reduction would be a slap in the face to Ted Wells, and Goodell will never do that. I have thought all along that Brady will have to go to court to have any shot of having the suspension overturned. Goodell backed himself into a corner, and now he can’t get out of it without looking like a fool.

  74. Yeah, his domestic violence was so bad the woman took money to not show up and attempt to convict him.
Or you know, that’s the phone record where HE’S calling the cops saying the well known coked up gold digger won’t leave his residence.
That’s worth 19 games apparently. Thanks internet PC crew. You’ve cried wolf yet again.
