Chiefs reach a big deal with Justin Houston at deadline

AP

For all the talk, we have our first deal of the day.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Chiefs have beaten the deadline with a deal for linebacker Justin Houston, a reported six-year, $101 million deal with $52.5 million guaranteed, details which PFT has confirmed as well.

This is where we put in our standard proviso that the details will show what is actual money and actually guaranteed, but if as billed, it would be the biggest linebacker deal in NFL history, trailing only Ndamukong Suh’s haul this offseason.

Keeping Houston was a priority for the Chiefs, allowing them a formidable pass rush for years to come.

And an expensive one.

  1. Overpaid. So amazingly overpaid. Don’t worry, I’m a Broncos fan and will say the same exact thing when Von tries for this.

  2. No one player- aside from maybe a QB- is worth that much. If you’re spending 11.5% of the cap on one guy, what’s that leave you to spend on the other 52?

  3. Holy Smokes. I Love me some H Houston and am Overjoyed he will be a Chief for years, but that is a lot of $$$. Happy #55 is on board. Go Chiefs.

  4. The problem with paying a non QB this kind of money is if he gets hurt. What is Hali going to be worth? There is only one QB that plays. If your QB gets hurt, you’re screwed anyway, but a guy that touches the ball on every play is the only player worth this kind of $$.

  5. If true, JPP lit the most expensive firework in world history. I don’t think the two bombs dropped on Japan cost that much.

  6. 12-4 season with a top 3 defense and top 5 offense.
And the next Super Bowl Champions.
John Dorsey and Andy Reid have built a powerful team that should win multiple titles over the next 6-8 years.
Every franchise will try to copy the Chiefs Way.
The road to the Super Bowl must go thru Arrowhead Stadium and deal with the Big Red Chiefs Nation.

  7. The price of doing business. You want a chance at 20+ sacks from one guy… this is what you gotta pay. Especially, if you believe the guy is someone to build around. Houston seems like a good guy and he definitely plays hard so while he may not get over 20 sacks again this year it will not be because of effort. I don’t think so anyway.

  8. The Chiefs nailed it…Well deserved contract… I think we need to do away with this Qb money foolishness… and players should be paid based on impact on game… If they are game planning based on you from week to week them you deserved to be paid as such… A real good look for the Chiefs… clearly they have plenty of Love for “Mr. Justin Huston”… Indeed..

  9. Great player. Great deal for him. I’m not in favor of paying defensive guys this much money. Only qbs but I’m not a coach or gm and they will be held accountable if the chiefs go bad.

  10. The guaranteed money is what sticks out here. The sticking point between Dallas and Dez is the guaranteed $$$. This may actually help Dez position a little bit and YES…definitely overpaid.

  11. Von has character issues so I think Elway plays real hardball with him on how much he will get guaranteed based of the Houston deal.

He will definitely have boatload of causes so Denver can get “claw back” the bonus money when Miller fails another drug test plus the guy has already blown one ACL. The more I think about it no way Miller gets Houston money.

  12. the people saying well deserved….no athlete deserves that kind of money to play a game, sorry.

But that being said money talks and if you want premiere talent you get out the bucks stuffs.

  13. KC just screwed the market for pass rushers. He just got more money then JJ Watt…… Houston is good but I can’t put him even in top 5 of pass rushers. Von Miller has got to be jumping for joy, he will be getting about $110mil next year since KC had to over pay to keep Houston.

    HELL YEAH!

  15. Houston is 1 of 4 players in last 10 seasons to average more than a sack a game over a 3-season span. That’s worth $101M.

  16. Houston is good but I can’t put him even in top 5 of pass rushers.

    ——————————————————————

And which 5 Pass Rushers are better than Houston???

Because last I checked he was the only one who was .5 sacks away from breaking the All Time Sack Record…. Sooooooooooooooooooooo……

  17. This deal got done because both parties stayed out of the media. That’s how MEN operate in business.

  18. The rest of the AFC West thanks you. Great pass rusher. Great RB. Good to really good WR.

Only thing missing is a QB.

22 years, about to become 25+ with the lack of talent KC just burned through by paying Houston.

Zero TD receptions by any Chiefs WR for the entire year, nobody is trying to duplicate that. Let me repeat….ZERO TD’s by a Chiefs WR all year. Alex Smith is a bum.

  20. Way overpaid for his level of talent. But for all those suggesting Von Miller is going to get an even bigger contract, remember, the Vikings way overpaid Peterson at $15 mil for a RB and the rest of the NFL yawned when it came time to sign the other RB’s. The point being, one dumb GM move doesn’t necessarily set the market price.

    well deserved.
amazing that this guy was picked in the third round.

    =
He would have been a first round pick if he didn’t pop positive for pot at the NFL combine.

  23. Zero TD receptions by any Chiefs WR for the entire year, nobody is trying to duplicate that. Let me repeat….ZERO TD’s by a Chiefs WR all year. Alex Smith is a bum.
    ———————————————-

    Alex Smith=Game Manager= No WR TD’s= No Passes over 20 yds= Mediocre

But being a Bills fan, that being said, I’d love to have him on my team.

But, that’s not saying much either. 🙁

  24. “If true, JPP lit the most expensive firework in world history. I don’t think the two bombs dropped on Japan cost that much.”

You don’t know too much about history then, it cost 2 billion in 1940s dollars to develop the atomic bomb.

That translates to 26 billion in 2015 dollars.

  25. It all depends on structure, JJ Watt’s deal doesn’t exceed $15 million until the last 2 years, with zero cap hit in those years for cutting him. If Houston’s deal is similar they will be okay.

  26. Zero TD receptions by any Chiefs WR for the entire year, nobody is trying to duplicate that. Let me repeat….ZERO TD’s by a Chiefs WR all year. Alex Smith is a bum.

    Fixed.

Now go suck some toes with Rex.

  27. Probably the only guy who is going to be worth his mega deal this offseason. He almost had as many sacks as the worst teams in the NFL BY HIMSELF. Then factor in the beastly players alongside him during pass rush situations.

  28. Dez is gonna be pissed. He does touch the ball 6 times a game….aka….1.5 catches per quarter.
Imagine a RB carrying the ball 3 times as much as a WR and making 1/3 the coin.

  29. I think this is a little steep IMO. With that being said all the people saying a qb should only get that kind of money let me remind you that the Chiefs qb is getting 17 mil a year and didn’t throw ONE td to a WR last year.

  30. Funny how every time any player – QB, WR, etc – signs a big deal, everyone’s initial reaction is “OVERPAID!”

Sure would love to hear about a big contract that the majority of comments suggest it was money well spent. The one that comes to my mind right away is J.J. Watt.

Having said all that, I’d say the Chiefs made a wise investment.

No thanks to all the receivers who either:

    A) Stepped out of bounds
    B) Fumbled at the 1 yard line
    C) Dropped the ball in the end zone
    D) Suck

    Soooooooooooooooooo….. “YEAH ALEX SMITH SUCK!”

  33. He’s good, really good..But they overpaid. Playing across from T.Hali, and players like D.PoE,D.Johnson ect on their front7 is crazy. If u double one the other gets to QB kind of thing.

  34. Teams have a right to spend their money, anyway they choose. But, the question is How Manet Super Bowls do you have? Suh, Watt or Houston are not going to win you Super Bowls. That includes WR like Bryant or Thomas…. Waist of money and foolish !!!!!

  37. JJ Watt is the only defensive player I consider to be worth around that amount per year. For that matter he is the only non-QB I consider worth that type of cash at this point in time. I suppose that factors in as in say 2 years a guy like Houston being paid this much won’t seem too much.

Very curious to see the details and how much of that haul is funny money.

  38. I’ll wait until the data posts to Spotrac to see what the real guarantee is. Gonna be at least 24 hours.

You didn’t know that either off the top of your head so don’t even try. If you google “cost of 2 atom bombs that rocked Japan” 2 billion and 26 billion comes up 40 times. So congrats. You know how to search Google just like my 5 yr old. In any event, my comment was hyperbole (go look that word up too while your at it).

  40. Trade that should happen:

    Kansas City Chiefs trade:

    QB Alex Smith
    LB Tamba Hali
    4th Round Pick

    To

    Seattle Seahawks for:

    QB Russell Wilson
    3rd Round Pick

Seahawks could then draft a QB that would be on the rookie wage scale and Chiefs would become a Superbowl-caliber team.

  41. This guy better be bettet than LT, break Strahan’s sack record and win a Super Bowl for that kind of money.

  42. Everyone cites his sacks, but he is also exceptional at batting down passes. He is currently top 3 in that regard, if not #1. (I know this from having IDPs in fantasy football.)

  43. Relax Chef fans…lets first try and throw a touchdown to a wide receiver at least one time in 16 games before proclaiming a Super Bowl win.

When was the last time you won a playoff game? Oh yea over twenty years ago. 😀

LOL!!!! Yep that makes Alex Smith not suck, 1 WR that you overpaid for. You’re smart.

  45. It looks like he got a slightly bigger contract than Watt, with slightly more in guarantees. Miller will probably get slightly more than Houston. That’s the way the market works. It only gets messed up when someone wildly overpays someone and screws the market up. Or, in the case of Megatron, comparing guys coming off the old rookie pay system to the new one(Bryant and DThomas). That didn’t happen here.

  46. This deal won’t look so huge as the cap gets higher next season. The wage scale will be completely changed and my guess is that the Chiefies will still have plenty of money.

  47. LOL!!!! Yep that makes Alex Smith not suck, 1 WR that you overpaid for. You’re smart.

Not sure if you realize this or not, but when a QB’s teammates are terrible and drop balls, fumble, and step outta bounds… that directly effects the QB.

I mean…. if you’ve ever seen a single game of football you’d understand that.

ie: Does LeBron James suck when he finds his teammates open for 3’s and all they can do is shoot bricks??

C’mon… think. It’s not hard to understand.

    Best Fans? The prosecution rests.

  49. I’m not sure if Chiefs fans realize this or not, but while Reid seems to have what it takes to win games in the regular season, he’s a choke artist in the big post season games with everything on the line. So you can have all the players you want, Reid is the weak link and the limiting factor because he plays scared when everything counts.

(Don’t shoot the messenger cuz you don’t like the message. Look back at his time with the Eagles…gaudy regular season numbers; pathetic post season numbers.)

  50. All I hear is haters peeing their pants because their team no longer has a chance of signing him next year.

  51. Now, if only they could do something about that Dilfer clone they have at QB…

NAH! Who needs a great QB anyway, right? Defense wins championships right? Or at least, a world-class defense MIGHT win ONE championship for you if you get lucky – a la CHI, TB and BAL. You want more than that? Then you need someone like Brady, Rodgers or Ben.

But even with this deal done, KC has NEITHER a world-class defense NOR a world-class QB. Can’t win championships like that. So while Houston deserves big pass-rusher money, this deal will likely hurt the Chiefs more than it helps. They have basically thrown away their ability to pay an experienced top-tier QB to take them to the next level, and they won’t be picking high enough to get a blue-chip in the draft. Tough job ahead for them.

  52. So Justin Houston just got $100 million. See kids, don’t let the devil weed ruin your life like it’s ruined Justin Houston’s life.

  53. @ spankmarley

Yeah, I’m sure everyone who likes your (likely) awful team knows every player and their number.

Way to judge an entire fanbase on 1 person.

  54. The never ending Alex Smith bashing and blaming by those who have obviously never seen him play as a Chief is really getting old. Try looking past what sports media says just to fill news cycles and actually find the truth out for yourselves. Or maybe just wait until the Chiefs roll your team this season and then maybe you’ll figure it out…

  55. I’m certainly not upset to see the Chiefs tie up a huge portion of their salary cap on one player. It prevents them from filling in any other gaps that need to be addressed.

No doubt Houston is a stud, but the fact is that the Chiefs STILL missed the 2014 playoffs despite his 22 sacks. I have no idea if they’ll get into the postseason this year but IF they do make the playoffs (as AFCW division winners; no wildcards from the AFCW) it won’t be because of this signing. It’ll be primarily because of the mediocrity of Denver (heavily weakened due to Elway’s ego-driven firing of Fox) and San Diego. And it would be with a 9-7 or 8-8 record. (unfortunately I don’t see the Raiders being a factor in the race).

  56. Not sure if you realize this or not, but when a QB’s teammates are terrible and drop balls, fumble, and step outta bounds… that directly effects the QB.

I mean…. if you’ve ever seen a single game of football you’d understand that.

C’mon… think. It’s not hard to understand.
    ——————————————————————-
So none of last year is on Alex Smith? All receivers drop passes, but eventually even a decent QB throws a TD to one of them.

Mark Sanchez has never played a season to where he hasn’t thrown a TD pass to WR. Think about that….. in fact I can’t name a single QB who hasn’t in the last 30 years. Alex Smith hasn’t thrown one since Dec 8th of 2013!

How can you defend that! Apparently you aren’t watching the games or you’d know that.

  57. ie: Does LeBron James suck when he finds his teammates open for 3’s and all they can do is shoot bricks??
    ———————————————————————-
Eventually one went in though right? Yes

Did one go in the endzone to a WR for Alex? Nope

And comparing basketball to football?…..That’s quite the stretch but whatever fits your agenda I guess. Didn’t really work though.

Wrong, wrong again… I wasn’t basing my statement on one fan, it was directed towards the whole Chief fan base! Didn’t get the first initial right and the number is totally way off. I would of left it alone, if it were an undrafted guy, but the dude lead the league in sacks and has been the pro bowl for the past three seasons. Typical however because the Chief fan base loves mediocrity.

  59. Apparently it did since you found it necessary to address it in detail.

  60. Houston is a great player and to all you guys screaming Haynrsworth or not worth it or Cap Hell… Get over yourselves! This is what the market pays now. If you are lucky enough to have a star young QB or acquire a big FA pickup then get use to it. If your team is not paying big contracts, trust me it will. As a Dolphins fan we had 100’s of you clowns tell us the way it was with Mike Wallace. He performed well, certainly not great and we dumped him and his Contract. See? It means nothing. Heck, we even turned around and signed Suh. Your comments are getting boring… The same stuff over and over again without any factual basis! This is the new NFL. What did you expect the Chiefs to let him walk and then no team was going to pay him the same if not more?

  61. Apparently what? I dont think your statement makes any sense in regards to any statement I had made. Anyways, good luck. I hope #55 H. Houston lives up to every penny paid. We all know the best linebacker in the west is #52 Khalil Mack.
