Report: Cowboys move offer to Dez Bryant over $13 million a year

As the clock continues to tick, the back-and-forth games continue.

According to NFL Media, the Cowboys have offered franchise-tagged wide receiver a long-term deal worth more than $13 million a year, noting that Bryant is “more optimistic than ever.”

Of course, one can assume that that offer was met with a counter-offer, as we near four hours until the deadline for a long-term deal.

If they can’t reach one, Bryant is scheduled to make $12.8 million this year, minus however many weeks he decides to stay away in protest, which he reportedly has and hasn’t done already.

Throughout this process, the Cowboys have held a strong position, with the widespread belief that he won’t miss time or paychecks. If they’re moving north of $13 million a year now, it might be approaching the point they can get something done this afternoon.

Of course, between their stern guarantee forfeiture language, and the fact two years of tags would average more than $14 million a year, it might not.

  1. I’d do back to back tags for Dez, then let him walk. Romo is just about cooked; why have an expensive WR to break in a new QB?

  2. which means it was under 13 million a year before this offer. not a cowboys fan but for a player of his caliber and with the salary cap continuing to increase annually, that’s a joke.

  3. The road to the Super Bowl is not paved with huge wide receiver contracts. Not a Jerah fan, but give him credit for at least trying to build a team the right way. Gotta have dez, but cannot over pay!

  4. I can just see Jerrah now, biting his nails like he does on the sidelines, when his team is about to blow it again.

  5. Needs to be over 14 closer to 15 and for at least 5 years with 40 million guaranteed which brings the real issue for Dez… the Guarantee… not a limited guarentee but an absolute guarentee.

Even if Cowboys offer 20 mill for this year alone Dez has repeatedly said he wants long term security , which I take as wanting 5 years and all guaranteed if possible. He has seen what they did to Murray last year used up and basically thrown away. and I believe that scared the heck out of him.

  6. Don’t matter if its 50 million a year. The key is how many “bats” are guaranteed!

  7. I think Dez is the kind of player that will play harder after getting a big contract, just to prove that he’s worth it.. and though a long term deal will most likely outlive Romo’s tenure, having a great receiver can help a young QB develop faster..

  8. Lots of haters today who hope and pray tat Dez doesn’t sign. Then and only then will your team have any chance at all of beating the Cowboys. GO COWBOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. This guy is worth it. Just get it over with and sign him long term so next year when you start looking at replacement qb’s you know a young guy would have one of the best receivers in the league to play with

  10. Giving in at all means the Boys need Dez more than Dez needs the Boys. No reason to show up now until he gets the number he had in mind ($20m per?).

  11. Actually it is more important to have great coaching. You can get by with good to very good receivers.

    Tom Brady
    Drew Brees

Neither has had a HOF class receivers, but they do have excellent coaches

The Cowboys are going to choke so bad this season, I can’t wait. Most annoying franchise in sports…..

    #########################

Dallas is second. The Packers and their fans get the blue ribbons for this honor.

  13. I just read an argument for tagging him back-to-back and then letting him walk. I also read the argument for straight up paying the man and letting him be here for when a new QB is in town. I thumbed up both.

I think the Cowboys (and Dez) have multiple options here and I think far more has been made about this then there needs to be. Jerry gets deals done. Take a look.

  14. My understanding is Dez was mostly concerned with getting more security in a long term deal and not so much the dollar amount which was pretty good at the franchise tender.

It just makes sense for Jerry to get this long term deal done and move on.

  15. Don’t understand all the watchers from the sidelines bidding these salaries up. Guys, its not sustainable. Its not the owners who pay those salaries, its us. Every additional ad we have to click through, every additional dollar in ticket costs we pay etc.
There has to be some type of moratorium. Owners don’t get any more money. Players don’t get any more money. Sleazeball journalists like Shefter don’t get any more money. Give a typical family a chance to go to a game without having to remortgage their home.

  16. It’s all about the guaranteed amount…when Dez says long term he means money that will last long term…as in guaranteed dollars…13 million per year of a 5 yr contract means very little, he can be cut year 2 and that 13 not be guaranteed…its all about upfront guaranteed cash…and he wants alot of it…

  17. Will the NFLPA still want to sue for collusion, as the Cowboys have offered over $13 million a season?

Not their fault if Dez Bryant is greedy, and unrealistic.

  18. The blocking issue here has not been about paying Dez Bryant. It’s more of can Dez handle the responsibilities of not only being a professional athlete, but a good person. Bill Parcells used to say nothing good happens after midnight.

Giving Dez guaranteed money means the Cowboys will eat it IF Dez gets into legal trouble. However, as a firm believer in redemption, I think Dez is ready for a chance. Hoping he has learned from things and is ready to act like an adult.

The Cowboys need him. He needs the Cowboys. Get the deal done today!

    Total misconception.

T.O. put the Eagles over the hump.
Plax gun incident blew a hole right in the Giants’ realistic chance at repeating. (they were 11-1 and rolling)
Moss made the Pats a juggernaut in 07′.

If the Pats hadn’t skimped on WRs all these years, Brady might just have 6 or 7 rings right now.

  20. He’s not worth what he’s getting now, so why should they pay him more? Will they, of course they will. It’s one of the reason this franchise is still a laughing stock. And you can bet they won’t deduct anything for the time that’s he’s missed.

  21. Few WRs in league history deserve a 10% budget of a single season’s cap.

Dez is not one of them.

  22. “The Cowboys are going to choke so bad this season, I can’t wait. Most annoying franchise in sports…..”

    Not even close.

  23. I was sooo close in this estimate…

“Needs to be over 14 closer to 15 and for at least 5 years with 40 million guaranteed which brings the real issue for Dez… the Guarantee… not a limited guarentee but an absolute guarentee.”

He got 5 year 70 mill and 45 guaranteed!

  24. the guy is a TURD cowboys know it agent knows it DEZ knows it too no way an employer can pay that kind of money without some type of protection if dez knows he will never screw up AGAIN sign it .

  25. If Romo is so good, then why do they need to draft every OL and pay a diva WR so much money? I guess they think Hardy and Gregory are the answer. Island of misfit toys. I’ll be there in January… January Joe Flacco

  26. NFL needs to investigate how the possible top draft OL pick in the league can just go sign with the Cowboys after not being drafted. I smell a rat.
