Stephen Gostkowski signs four-year deal with Patriots

Kicker Stephen Gostkowski is sometimes called on to beat the clock with a game-winning field goal for the Patriots.

On Wednesday, he beat the deadline to sign a multi-year deal with the team. According to multiple reports, Gostkowski has agreed to a four-year deal with the team and Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the total value is $17.2 million. The annual average of $4.3 million per year is the most for any kicker in the league.

Gostkowski had already signed his $4.59 million franchise tender so there wasn’t going to be any holdout had the two sides failed to agree to a deal. Getting one done helps the Patriots under the cap and gives Gostkowski the security to know that he’ll continue playing for the only team he’s ever played for in the NFL.

Gostkowski joined the Pats in 2006 and has made 243-of-280 field goals over the last nine seasons. All of those field goals have helped him lead the league in scoring for the last three seasons and his accuracy makes sticking with Gostkowski an easy choice for New England.

  1. Bill pays players who deserve it, but I am surprised he got back to the average to subpar cornerback approach after a solid secondary won them the superbowl

  2. Best Kicker in the NFL. Foxborough has an open end, is often cold and windy, and rests at sea level. Reliable and clutch and dangerous on kickoffs in both kicking them thru the endzone and recovering onsides kick attempts.

  3. .
Gostkowski is highly underrated. The majority of his kicks are made in environments that are hostile to place kickers, like New England, New York, or Buffalo.

  4. Thank you Stephen!!! People can come and go in a lot of different positions, and I usually think it is for the best. Football has so much turnover. But there are a couple positions that you like steady. Place kicker just happens to be one of them. When Stephen comes on the field, I know we have a pretty good shot at hitting it. Glad you are going to be here a while.

  5. This guy has been money since he shanked that would be game winner against the Cardinals a couple seasons ago. I remember holding my breath every time he kicked, now he is one of the more reliable players on NE. I hate big money kickers, but I can’t hate this signing. Glad the Pats have him locked up for the future.

  6. Great news. Especially with the rule change , having the Gost, Mr Automatic for the next four years under contract.

Next up, Brady to start Week # 1

  7. I remember well my funk when Vinatieri spurned the Pats for the cash the Colts were offering. Gostkowski has brought me a long way back from that point. Where I thought it would be extremely hard to replace as clutch a kicker as Vinatieri, Gost has gone and done exactly that. It is good to be a Patriots fan.

  8. He has been a good one for you guys, no doubt about it. I love Carpenter for the Bills, since coming over from the Dolphins a few years ago, the guy has been money in the bank almost every time, especially from 53 yards and longer.

  9. Have to wonder now that the NFL will have babysitters for the footballs if he’ll be able to continue this nice run of is if the balls are not set to his liking. This goes far beyond just Brady folks.

  10. He’s been here since 2006? Man, time flies. That was the Reche Caldwell drops the ball year, as I recall.

Gotskowski has been great, and glad to have him, but nothing is ever beating that Snow Bowl kick to tie it up.

I would say he will have no issue since kicking balls are only handled by the refs and not by any team members like game balls. Also nice to see people making posts about NFL rules so they can remove all doubt about their intelligence.

  12. This was well deserved he’s one of the top 3 kickers in the league. Bad news for the Ravens though because Tucker is going to ask for around the same price that Gostkowski got, but that’s none of my concern.

  13. 10 years ago, Adam Vinateri was tagged in what would be his last season in New England. Now, Gostowski signs a 4 year deal to keep him through 2018.

    Amazing what 10 years does

I wonder how you posted this after a lobotomy

kickers want more air in balls not less

  15. The guy scared the heck out of me his first couple of years in the league; especially coming after Vinitieri. (Remember when the Pats went for it on a 4th and 13 rather than try a 51 yd field goal in the ’07 Super Bowl?) But I must admit, he’s made a believer out of me.

  16. Best job in the league. Get to chill in training camp and practice, don’t get hit too hard on the field and a chance at glory.

  17. grabgrabgrab,

Steven did miss the kick in Greenbay, but when it comes to chokes, your teams latest playoff gaff is second to none. PERSPECTIVE

He choked big time in Green Bay. I was there, and totally loved it. The final outcome was spectacular as well. Pack rolled.

So was that before Green Bays MASSIVE choke job in Seattle? And before the Patriots won yet another Super Bowl???

    cool story…

  19. TO ALL NFL FANS: Part of the fun of sites like these is the trollers. I know it gets my blood boiling at times when people rag on my team, but it’s also very funny when it happens to teams I don’t like. It’s part of the game. Don’t let it get you all angry and flustered. REALX. Take it in stride and remember when you thought it funny when it happened to others. If you didn’t, check for a pulse. ENJOY! Brothers fight. They rib on each other. Why so serious? IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE!!!!!!

That is not true and it’s proven. Therefore that is a lie and by extension you are a liar.

Huh, I wonder if your admitted cheating, over inflating qb had an advantage in that game? Of course when it counted most he along with the entire organization coughed up one huge hairball. Gag-Gag That was an epic collapse!!

Every team loses a road game or 2 except for a few teams in history. For example, Green Bay went on to blow their season by losing to the Bills. THE BILLS!!!! The horror!

I don’t think Scott Norwood or Mike Vanderjerk would agree.

  24. Took my 9 year old son to his first game in 2012 vs the Arizona cardnels it’s was early week 3 or 4 Pats D came up with a huge fumble recovery and set Steve Gas up with a 40 yard layup in perfect weather…. He shanked it Pats lost and my son was crushed. Other than my sons crappy first game awesome kicker.

Oh yeah that was tough. I had totally forgotten about that. Winning a Super Bowl will do that.

  26. brady has been banging the teams in the nfl writ large…….and now he is going to do the league ….man brady is the goat……I don’t know who your qb was for the past 15 years….but mine is tom banging brady baby!!!!!!!

    —-

I bought the importance of the secondary in the regular season, but in the playoffs? Nope. If the Patriots lost against the Ravens, it would be on the secondary, and specifically Revis as got burned badly by Steve Smith Sr. As for the Super Bowl, how many more points do your think the Seahawks would have gained if the Patriots had no Revis or Browner but a top tier front seven? Wilson was burning the secondary with the time he had to throw, and Brady and company had to go out there and break records against the best D in the league to win. Even then that wasn’t enough, as the secondary got burned all the way to the goal line, only for a UDFA cornerback to get the interception.

Belichick seen what some of us seen during the playoffs: secondaries are overrated. I’d rather use that money on a position that can both stop the run AND rush the QB before he makes a throw into the secondary.

  28. but I am surprised he got back to the average to subpar cornerback approach

Wait and see who gets a trophy first, Bill or Revis.

  29. Wet blanket time…. Gostkowski is good but he did miss a 27 yd bunny at home vs NYG in 2011 at the half of a 0-0 game which played a part in NYG ending the Pats’ million game home winning streak vs. the NFC and in the 1st SB vs. NYG the great Bill Belichick showed a collossal lack of faith in him eschewing a 47 yd fg to go for it on 4th and long (incomplete pass in endzone).

  30. Ho hum yet another great move by the World Champions! 🙂 A win win deal for sure. He’s really pulled it together the last few years and become one of the better kickers in the game.

It really must be boring to the World Champions to do everything great all the time. Well actually no it’s not. 🙂

Too bad Patriot Hater will never know what that’s like. Awwww. 🙂
