Russell Wilson on contract: We’ll see what happens

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was on the red carpet at the ESPYs on Wednesday night, but no one was asking him about his thoughts on any of the awards that were going to be handed out during the event.

As it has been for almost all of the offseason, the topic of choice was Wilson’s contract. Wilson is set to play the 2015 season, the last of his rookie deal, for $1.5 million and he’s made it clear that he’s willing to play out the year before signing a new deal. That’s opened up the possibility that Wilson could play somewhere else come 2016, but Wilson said Wednesday that he was confident it would “all work out” but didn’t give much in the way of an update.

“I love Seattle, it’s a great city,” Wilson said, via ESPN.com. “I’m going to play my butt off every day. That’s all I know, and we’ll see what happens.”

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was at a different event in Los Angeles Wednesday and he got the same questions. Carroll, who was at the Sports Humanitarian of the Year Awards, said that the team would continue to work toward an agreement while remaining vague about the chances of actually reaching one.

“Well, he’s crucial, as are all of our guys, and we want him back playing for us forever,” Carroll said, via the Seattle Times. “There’s a lot of work being done. It’s underway right now and maybe it happens, I don’t know. We’re hoping for it.”

If Wilson is willing to play out the 2015 season on his current deal in the absence of the offer he wants from the Seahawks, the chances of a quick resolution are likely to remain as slim as they’ve looked all offseason.

  1. Russell Wilson to the Buffalo Bills for a 1st and 2nd rounder in 2016 and a 1st rounder in 2017. Seahawks get two top players that will be paid on the rookie wage scale. Bills get Wilson to throw to Harvin and Watkins and could do a ton of read option plays with McCoy in the backfield. And with their defense, it could put an end to their streak of missing the playoffs every year since 1999.

  2. Is he gonna go hey God its me Wilson, I know I play off like a team guy but what I really want is to be the highest paid guy who got outplayed by an undrafted CB.

  3. I would really like to see what has been offered and what has been requested. Is it more a case of Seattle being cheap, or Wilson being greedy? I just don’t think he is a $20 mil player, myself. Good player, not elite.

  4. Lots of embarrassment for Seahawk fans watching Russell Wilson being used as a tool on the ESPY’s last night

  5. If Wilson ever did leave Seattle, the fans would be screwed. It’s the only player they recognize on their team. #Newfans

  6. Wilson isn’t doing himself any favors with these phoney comments.
Just let his agent do the negotiations and say to the public I like playing in Seattle and my agent is handling the negotiations.

  7. He’s got a number in mind, and if they don’t match it, he’s shopping elsewhere. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to piece that together when each response by him is as vague and non-committal as the next.

  8. What did God say? He talks to Wilson, and we all know ‘the big guy’ loves his football.

  9. Russell you are a fantastic QB and much more than the “game manager” that some continue to foolishly say you are. In this contract situation you (and your manager) are being flat out dumb. Yes you have been underpaid but you are not stuck in a deal like Luck that is locked in for 2 more years. Luck’s option was picked up and it is not the going rate for “elite” QB’s (whatever elite means nowadays w Eli, Flacco, Stafford, Cam, et al considered elite). 3 years of being underpaid vs. 5 years. Take the decent deal NOW, get paid $20-$22 mil over the next 2-3 years and then redo another deal when the cap has gone up and get another signing bonus that is “cap friendly”. Cash upfront is what you want and playing out this year at $1.5 and then risking the franchise next year is just dumb. Franchise tag is $20-$25 mil next year + $1.5 this year = $26.5 max vs. new deal about $30 signing bonus plus base salaries. The signing bonus alone is more than what you will make over the next 2 seasons.

Look at it as you are 2 years into getting another deal. Plus TVM, injuries, and all kinds of other variables you will not be able to think of. Take the deal.

  10. 2014 non-exclusive franchise tag number for a QB is $18.54 million. The 2015 franchise tag number is about $21 million.

Exclusive tag means you can bump up that franchise number another $2 million.

I’m assuming since the CBA prevents any renegotiation for rookie contracts this last season Wilson must play for $1.5 million and any new agreement he signs will apply to the 2016 season.

If that’s the case his options are accept a deal now that I’d currently not meeting his price or wait for a deal that can come at any point between now and around this time next season. The worse case he plays under a 2016 tag of about $20 million next season.

It’s his life, his negotiation and like many on here say to players who sign deals and hold out a fee years later…..don’t sign it unless you’re ok with the contract. Nobody should sbe upset with this. This is exactly what most on here advocate. Do not sign a contract if you’re not satisfied with the offer.

  11. Another area where Wilson really struggled during the 2014 regular season on third downs. His passer rating of 77.1 in those situations ranked 27th out of 33 quarterbacks with at least 60 attempts, and the 18 sacks he took on third down were more than all but two QBs last year. The league leader in third-down passer rating was, of course, Rodgers, who averaged 9.2 yards per attempt and posted a ridiculous 121.7 rating with 15 touchdowns on third down last season.

  12. Why all the Wilson hating? If you are a fan of any team other than the Patriots, Packers or Colts you would kill to have Wilson as your QB.

  13. Top 1 Defense, Top 3 team, Top 5 Rushing Attack, Bottom 10 Passing Attack. Be reasonable, Russ. Take your 15 mill a year and set your family up for generations.

  14. Russell Wilson to the Buffalo Bills for a 1st and 2nd rounder in 2016 and a 1st rounder in 2017.

LOL – the Rams got 3 1sts and then some for a washed-up has-been of a bust. You’d have to do much better than that.

  15. You just had to know the minute Bryant & Thomas settled their contracts that Wilson news would pop back up. Even though there is nothing new.

If Wilson settled today, deflategate would pop back up.

Can’t wait for actual games to start…

  16. word is that Ciara is actually just a beard for him so he doesn’t have to come out while still playing.

  17. seahawks should trade russell wilson to the eagles for tim tebow and 2 first round picks. im confident that tebow would do just as good as russell wilson if not better. plus tebow is way better in the 4th q. so you get 2 first round picks and your only paying 1 mil for the same production as wilson plus you save a 24 mil to load up on defense. if im the seahawks GM i’d do that deal quickly.

  18. Some jobs about to open up due to attrition are: Dallas, NYG, AZ, Denver and NE. Cincy, CLE, HOU,JAX,CHI are ready for a change. BUF & PHI are unsettled. STL?

There’s a small group at the top. Russell will have leverage to entertain offers, if SEA proves to be inclined to take it that far.

  19. Why would the Seahawks just volunteer to up their payroll $20 million before they need to? They have Russell Wilson for $1.5 million this season and still have a great team around him. Next year they will be forced to pay him. Either with a new contract or by franchising him. That’s when you’ll see it get done. If something does get done this year it will be in an extension that still pays him the $1.5 with the big bucks coming next year. And that’s what he and his agent don’t seem willing to do so I’m thinking next off season is when you’ll see it all come together.

Sorry to all you dreamers out there who think Wilson is going to somehow come and play for your team. It ain’t happening. He going to be spending his career as the Seahawks QB.

  20. It’s hard to believe this is the same Seattle front office that has built a reputation for smart decision making. With each day that passes, Wilson’s leverage gets stronger and the eventual value of his contract grows. Whenever and wherever Wilson signs a long-term deal, it will be among the richest in the league – and the richest contract next offseason is certain to be greater than anything signed this summer, and next season’s contracts will be even more.

  21. Wonder if the kids at the Nick sports awards will ask him if god told him to make that throw on another “Live Event” back in February

  22. Now that the free agent WRs are all signed, I suppose this is all we’ll hear about for the next 10-day NFL dead period.

  23. God spoke to him and said he wants him to be the highest paid player in the NFL

Not even Jesus demanded to be the highest paid Carpenter

  24. Every hawk fan is sick. In 2013 Seattle won it all based on defense. Now his agent says he wants to be paid based on wins.
    Ok, here is the solution,
    pay Russell 1.5 this year,
franchise him in 2016 for 27 million,
negotiate a contract with him by 2017 because lynch will be retired by then freeing up 12 mill a year.

You want to play hard ball Russ, accept the fact that you won’t have beast running most plays and the entire offensive line will be late round no name picks

  25. Credit to Pete Carroll and John Schneider for not caving to russell’s insane 5/125 demands. More money than Rodgers?? Sorry kid– you’re not the One.

  26. I’m tired of the cr@ap about Wilson, even from Seattle fans.

I want to see him go to the Cowboys. With their OL and receivers, Wilson will lead the league in every passing category. There’s no doubt he can do it, look at his year at Wisconsin. Broke the NCAA record for passing efficiency, 33 passing TDs to 4 interceptions, 72% completion rate, 191.8 passer rating.

And Romo will be 37 in two years. Wilson plays out his rookie contract this year, next year the Seahawks franchise him for $24 mill, then he get $25 mil a year to go to the Cowboys.

One thing for sure, Wilson is only going to go to a team where he has a real chance to shine. He’s not going to a perennial loser to make a few mill more a year

  27. just do something different next time so we don’t have to see tom brady jump up and down like a girl. that was annoying. tom brady sucks.

  28. There’s lots of good reasons why it’s almost impossible to repeat SB champs. This type of off-season contract drama being one.

Hawks fans need to be happy they got one while their window was open, because it’s shutting very quickly.

  29. Russell Wilson: If you don’t pay me I’m going to play MAJOR league baseball!

Baseball scouts: LOLZ. Enjoy long bus rides in AA MINOR league ball, Russell.

  30. Hey Russ….Maybe try not turning the ball over in the playoffs. You were more than lucky that the Packers choked harder than you did. And that pick in the Super Bowl?…yeah…. God threw that, right?

  31. As to Wilson not being “elite,” once again:

Most wins in 1st 3 seasons in NFL history.
#2 all-time in regular season passer rating.
#5 all-time in post season passer rating.
Tied with Payton Manning and Dan Marino as the only players in NFL history with 50 or more TD passes in 1st 2 seasons.

    Peyton Manning and Dan Marino.

84 TD passes in his 1st 3 seasons. More than Tom Brady.
    Tom Brady.

Most playoff wins in last 3 seasons.
Most wins in last 3 seasons.
2 Super Bowl appearances, 1 Super Bowl victory.
11-1 against other Super Bowl QBs.

Oh, and the other NFL players voted him the #5 QB in the game.

    Yeah, Wilson’s not elite…

  32. The question is if a good, but not great, QB is worth that kind of money, or would teams be better off spending it elsewhere on the roster.

Seattle is in a great position right now – this is essentially a freebie for them. They get to tryout Wilson to see if he is worth the money, while using the cap space most teams have to spend on the QB, to make them a leading a contender for the SuperBowl again.

  33. Why all the Wilson hating? It’s not hating, it’s just the truth. He’s a mediocre QB demanding to be paid like an elite QB.

Wilson knows that his numbers have been artificially inflated by the outstanding play of the defense and the running game, and he wants to cash in before the team regresses to the mean and his true skill-set shows through, like it started to during his horrific performances in the playoffs.

(Those who don’t understand how the defense and running game affect QB statistics are simply not savvy enough to understand the game as a whole.)

Gee-whiz that really hurt. Nice one.

I’m not a “bandwagon fan”, I’ve grown up with the hawks. But my mother is a relatively new fan and…so what? I’m still stumped as to why it is a bad thing to have a growing fan base tuning in every Sunday? I guess maybe people were realizing how outdated the Sea-adderall jokes were.

When was the last..back in the 70’s with the Seattle SuperSonics? That nba franchise left that dump of a city Seattle to go to Oklahoma lol

Actually it’s you who is not say enough to understand the game as a whole.

What exactly were the Seahawks winning before this medicare QB came along as you call Wilson?

How were the past Seahawks QBS performing with Marshawn as the back?

    This is silly.

    2012 – 64% completion 3118 passing yards, 26 passing tds, 10 int, 100qb rating, 459 rushing yards, 4 rushing td

    2013 – 63%, 3357 pass yds, 26 td, 9int, 539 rushing yards, 1 td

    2014 – 63%, 3475 pass yds, 20 td, 7 int, 95 rating, 849 rushing yards, 6td

That’s one of the best starts EVER for a QB. Especially one playing without elite receiving talent.

The cop out that everything he does is owed to his defense is laughable.

How were the other QBS such as Tarvaris Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst performing with this great running game and defense?

How many games were the Seahawks winning?

    Without Wilson but with Lynch
    2010 – 7-9
    2011 – 7-9

    With wilson
    2012 – 11 – 5
    2013 – 13-3
    2014 – 12-4

You have 0 clue on what you’re talking about.

    Cherry picked stats,

Conveniently left out that Rodgers 1st 3 years as a starter easily eclipse every stat Wilson has. (look it up on your favorite stat site)

Yet you want to give him Rodgers Money?

  41. When you rate Russell Wilson against any QB that has ever played the game for their 1st 3 seasons in the NFL, he is as good as any and better than most. That includes Montana, Marino, Elway, Brady, Manning, etc. Any of them. We’ll he be as good as them when his career is over? Its too early to tell but he’s better than them so far.

If you go back to his senior season at Wisconsin, that was about as good or better season than just about any of them has had as well.

There is nothing about Russell Wilson that says average. Everything he has done so far shouts greatness in the making. It is grossly unfair to compare his game after three seasons to much more veteran QBs and say he is not elite. Let’s see how it all looks after another 3 or 4 years have passed.

  42. Hes a better version of Tim Tebow.
Seahawks are going to let him walk.
The Packers let him play in the Superbowl cause he was terrible in that NFC Champ game.

Lets see what happens if R Sherman goes down. He is the leader of that team.

Jimmy is a great tight end but he can’t or won’t block so good luck with that.

I see Wilson taking a lot of sacks this year and lets face facts he is not getting younger for being a running quarterback.

Pay him 30 mill a year and watch Seattle slide back to medicority.

  46. God: I’ll give you all the money you ever dreamed of and a woman who never heard a beat she couldn’t sing a song about sex over.

    Russ: The catch?

God: You’ll take up all the money your team could spend on the players that make you look so good, probably never make the super bowl again…and you have to tell everyone you’re waiting for marriage even though they’ll know you’re lying.

    Russ: Deal.

  47. They were below .500 with Beast Mode plus Matt Hasselbeck or Tarvaris Jackson at QB.

  48. I see a Seahawks management taking serious advantage over the nice guy attitude of Russell Wilson. This just further prove it doesn’t matter how the athlete conducts himself management will not always do right by you.

That’s why i wish he wake up and smell the coffee that this is a business and he should treat it as such, and that means not SHOWING up to camp PERIOD.With the amount of money he is due to make he is not going to be missing anything he can’t make up for on the back end of a NEW DEAL.

You guys really think the seahawks want to show up with all the weapons they have MINUS the most important ONE.

Russell Wilson needs to realize that this is a CUTTHROAT business and he should start listening to his AGENT.When TEAMS are ready to CUT YOU they don’t give you any BREAKS or CONSIDERATION.

  49. Comparing RWilson passer rating his 1rst 3 yrs to guys like Manning and Brady is ridiculous. When Manning and Brady came into the league, the average rating was in the high 70’s. When Wilson came in it was in the high 80’s, due to rule changes and various other factors.

Using win stats is also meaningless. Wilson is a poor 3rd as a reason for Seahawk wins, way behind the D and Lynch.

Wilson is a good QB, Not great. Certainly not elite. He does have a knack for being clutch. In QB rating he’s averaged about 8th in the league. He passes for about 200 yrds/gm. Teams worry more about him hurting them with his feet than his arm.

I think he’s going to want elite money and Seattle won’t be willing to pay. After this yr he gets franchised, and either gets traded or walks after that.

    …………………….
All good points but if I’m going to play devil’s advocate I would counter with

    1) His team around his is not just good, it’s excellent. His defense time and again put him in position to win, his coaching staff is outstanding in its scheme, and his offensive line is incredible.

    2) Passer rating #s are great, but you’re talking about a 3 year career. It cannot be quantified as “of all time” appropriately yet because it is measured against people who have played longer careers, with more hardships that go along with long careers. It’s premature.

    3) Tom Brady wasn’t a starter at the beginning of his career, so it only makes sense Russ would outnumber him in all facets.

Russell is great. And outside of Manning, Brees, Brady & Rodgers (in no order) yeah, he’s probably the next best guy. But if Russell Wilson was drafted by Jacksonville, Cleveland, Oakland- all of which were dumpster fires at the time he was drafted and still are dumpser fires- Wilson is not the elite QB he is today.

Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl. That’s what people remember him for. You know what people remember Wilson for? Throwing a pick on the 1 yard line. Fair or not, that’s what he will be remembered for. Also, nice cherry picking of the stats. It’s a lot easier to win games when the D is ranked #1

  54. It looks like Wilson’s agent got a hold of him and told him he was not doing himself any favors by talking too much.
I still think the kid’s life has changed so drastically from two years ago that the Seahawks would be wise to let him play out his contract and if necessary franchise him.

For all Seahawks fans know, Wilson may want to go live and play in a media marketing city or tomove to wherever his current girlfriend lives.

  55. Pretty amazing, but not surprising that people credit the running game and defense for all the Seattle success.

As I’ve said before, it’s quite easy to just look at SEA 1) before Wilson arrived and 2) since his arrival.

They had the same RB and defense and went 7-9, right? People saying he wants to make more than Rodgers, simply have no idea how contracts work. You wanna see Seattle without Wilson, you don’t have to look far.

Checkout Arizona and St. Louis. Give Wilson Peyton or Luck’s weapons and see what he can do with pro bowl WRs, since having to play with WRs that he made. It’s one thing to be ignorant, but another to be willfully ignorant. This guy has had the best first 3 years in NFL history.

The first 3 years of stats show Rodgers was superior in his first 48 games as a starter. Only Wilson apologists try and find a reason not to compare the two.

  57. If you’re Seattle, why sign him to that deal now.? He’s willing to play for $1.5, let him. If he plays well, offer him the deal next year after you have him cheap for a year. I doubt the price will go up. You can pay him $22 m this year and every year after, or you can pay him $1.5 m this year and $22m every year after. Seems like an easy choice.

  58. I see the jealous haters are in full force today. “All Seahawks fans are brand new bandwagoners”, “Russell is a game manager”, etc. Yawn, let me know when you come up with something new.

  59. Wilson isn’t worth a long term guaranteed deal he wants.

He should be happy to get the same as everyone other QB of $15-20 million for 4-5 seasons.

Anything more than that will ruin the team’s cap over all.

As much as I dislike Pats, they do the cap system the right way: keep your core player and replace everyone else annually.

  60. Really looking forward to seeing what Russell Wilson does with his new toy, Jimmy Graham. I’m going to enjoy watching defenses try to make the choice to cover Graham, Lynch, or Wilson. It will be interesting to see what impact that has on the games of Baldwin, Kearse, and Matthews. And then the impacts of the rookie Lockett and PRich when he gets back from the PUP. I think this is going to be a fun season.

  61. They are going to pay him-plain and simple. I still say the he changed the play in the SB and PC and Bev fell on the sword for him

  62. im confident that tebow would do just as good as russell wilson if not better.

    —————————————–

So you think Tebow could also beat the 49ers like they stole something?

    Makes sense.

About anyone in the league will use them this year.

  63. I’m a huge Seahawks fan. And this franchise has been waiting for a QB like Russell Wilson for quite some time. BUT, to pay this man $25 million a year (18.8% of the cap) when a QB like Brady makes $15 million a year, is absolutely ridiculous. That defense and run game is the ground work upon which this team is built, and having Wilson as QB has been what has put us over the top. But I’d rather continue to have the top notch defense (extend Bobby Wagner) and run game, then pay a QB $25 million dollars. I’d “Non exclusive” franchise tag him in 2016, let someone else pay him the $25 million he wants and get two 1st round picks out of it.

Hopefully he proves us all wrong and takes a more reasonable salary so they can continue to build a winner, because in the last 20 years, only 4 teams have won the Super Bowl with the a QB making more then 10% of the salary cap

  64. Honestly if Russell was smart he’d agree to whatever price tag Seattle offers. If he goes elsewhere for a bigger paycheck, he’s gonna end up on a crappy team. He is a good quarterback, but not good enough to make a crappy team better. I know he wants to be paid, but is going to the highest bidder really more worth it then playing for a top caliber team who makes you look good and who could help you get into the HoF and get more SB rings? If you’re only playing the game for the money and don’t care for your legacy then you should quit while you’re still young and healthy.

  65. it’s at least worth mentioning that the espn story that you got this from, has the headline – –

“Russell Wilson reiterates his belief that contract situation ‘will work out'”

Don’t be too hard on the Seahawks fans. The vast majority of them are relatively new to football and are still learning the game. Most think that looking at straight numbers without an understanding of a TEAM game proves their “points”. They’re the product of media-fed sabremetrics.
