Russell Wilson wants to be paid like a free agent now

The news that talks between the Seahawks and quarterback Russell Wilson will end at training camp raises the stakes for the negotiations, since the inability to get a deal done before then means the Seahawks eventually will face a difficult array of choices in February. But Wilson apparently wants the Seahawks to face those choices now.

During a Friday visit to PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media explained that Wilson wants to be paid as if he were a free agent.

This means that he wants market value for a position where healthy franchise quarterbacks never actually get to the market. It also means that Wilson wants to fast forward through the fourth year of his rookie year, shifting the risk of injury and ineffectiveness to the Seahawks even though he still has 16 regular-season games and possibly multiple postseason games to play.

Most importantly, if Wilson truly wants to be paid now as if he were a free agent, it means that a deal won’t be done before the start of training camp. Which means that a deal won’t be done until next year, at the earliest.

Which means that there remains a very good chance that Wilson won’t be playing for the Seahawks in 2016, with one possible outcome being use of the exclusive version of the franchise tag by the Seahawks, followed by a trade for something more or different than the two first-round picks that would be available under the non-exclusive franchise tag.

  1. This is how it goes in the salary cap era. Every team and every player faces these decisions.

  2. They should’ve traded him to TB before the draft for No. 1, No. 34, the first-rounder next year, and Mike Glennon.

Glennon could manage the offense, and the Seahawks could’ve added a bunch more pieces to their already stout roster.

Wilson is a good player, but delusional.

  3. Wait a minute, I thought he wanted to be the highest paid QB ? Which is it ?

The Seahawks should not cave to this in any way.

  4. Why don’t they just add a year to all these “contracts”…. Instead of a 4 year rookie contract,,, just make it 5… The players aren’t gonna honor it anyway. If it’s 5 years then after 4 they can get paid. Lol what a joke.

  5. Give it up Russell. Hawks don’t want you, need you, or care about you. They likely have your replacement square in their radar.

  6. After getting a ‘chip, there is a post career value to _not_ trying to squeeze every cent out of the team you play for, to the point where you may wait/force your way out. Endorsements, restaurants, auto dealerships, you name it, branded with your name, a name almost universally embraced in that town. Throwing that away, at least partially, may be much more expensive than the present money you seek.

  7. Seattle would be better off letting Wilson sign with another team after his current contract is finished.

  8. I love it, go for the money now and see just how much your team loves you as their QB for years to come. seeing that they are not biting could be they dont love you that much to put their future in your hands Russ.

  9. He’s had a Hall of Fame defense and unbelievable running back his entire career and thinks he deserves $20-25M/year?

I would say he’s worth $20M, as that is the going rate, but I’d still take about 8-9 guys ahead of him if I were a GM. He still hasn’t thrown 3500 yards. He’s averaging 200-210 yards/game in an age where 270-300 yards is elite territory.

So why are his yards so low? Because they’re always in the lead! You don’t get elite money for being a game manager!

If I’m the Seattle GM, I’m trading him to Houston or Cleveland for a hefty price and getting a veteran game manager in return. Keep investing in the defense and O-line: that is the reason you’ve had success, not because of QB play.

And guess what? If he has a breakout year passing-wise due to Jimmy Graham, then he’ll want even more money. Franchise him in 2016 and trade him off to another team and draft his replacement.

  10. And God spoke, “thou shalt seek to enrich thyself with excessive earthly riches for that is the surest path to the kingdom of heaven. Woe is he who liveth in the middle and lower classes.”

  11. How much money did Trent Dilfer get after winning a super bowl? Nothing substantial because the team and everyone else who knows even a scant bit about football, knows Dilfer wasn’t the reason the team won all the games and the championship. Wilson is more like Dilfer that he is like Brady. If you believe Wilson is elite and worth elite money, you are either delusional or know little to nothing about football.

“The Seahawks won a super bowl, Wilson was the quarterback so Wilson is the reason they won and is the best player in the game”. That mentality is puzzling to folks who know football.

  12. Wilson goes to the browns, wins 4 games, never gets back to the playoffs and realizes that he wasn’t that good to begin with….. When keeping it real good wrong.

  13. russell wilson is taking a high stakes gamble and hes going to lose if he dont take the seahawks offer. i say this because russell already hit his ceiling qb skills wise. russell in his 4th year is getting worse as a pocket passer. lucky he has the #1 defense and top 3 run game to mask his limitations as a qb. alot of people thinking it will cost the seahawks more money next year are wrong. it will actually cost them less because the seahawks after being to back to back super bowls have nowhere to go but down unless they win the super bowl. if russell doesn’t make it to the super bowl , he will lose money. if russell loses in the wild card game, he will lose millions. this is going to be a big down year for russell wilson.

  15. He will never live up to whatever big money he will eventually get. That pick will haunt him forever and he’s already starting to crack… Talking to god and not having sex with his girlfriend fair or not will have a huge effect on how his teammates trust him and the overall chemistry of the locker room. A teams QB should be someone you look to lead the team and have the full respect of evoryone not the butt of jokes inside and outside of the lockeroom.

  16. Don’t you know better, Russell. You should be grateful to be the best QB the Seahawks have ever had or to be paid minimum wage for a QB under a franchise owned by a man who hasn’t worked since the 80s for an idea him and his partner, Bill Gates, stole from some other people. The horror.

  17. scmems07 says:Wilson goes to the browns, wins 4 games, never gets back to the playoffs and realizes that he wasn’t that good to begin with….. When keeping it real goes wrong.

When keeping it real goes wrong. lol good 1 bro

  18. Why doesn’t the guy just shut up and take some the blame for blowing the Super Bowl? I mean yeah Carroll made the call, but Wilson threw it. Just take a smidgen of the blame and stop whining.

  19. Trade Wilson to Buffalo for EJ Manuel, straight up. A #16, first round pick for a #75 3rd round. Plus, EJ is 5″ taller, younger, and has less mileage. Thirty-one teams were wrong about EJ. Only the Bills knew what his potential is.
Surely Seattle can see that now. I think Seattle can pry EJ loose from the Bills. Tough, up hill negotiations, but, it can be done.

  20. Good God. This blows my mind, Seahawks before Russell…..hot garbage and barely relevant in the league. After Russell…..arguably the best team in the league. Not a coincidence says this Packers fan, but please by all means get rid of your franchise QB so Green Bay only needs to worry about who they will play on the Superbowl the next couple years. Hawks fans need to realize that their defense didn’t lead a comeback against Green Bay last year, Russell did….that same vaunted Defense got shredded by Tom Brady in the Superbowl. If not for dumbass Pete Carroll the Hawks would be back to back champs as we speak. Russell will make you relevant for the next 10 years if you sign him, no matter who else you have on your roster. Just ask Buffalo and the Jets how having a great, talented team without a QB has worked for them. Buffalo is Seattle without a good QB. Pay the man you idiots.

  23. Ic everyone is saying he’s a game manger and they’d win without him then why is it that everyone knocks the Bills for doing the same thing?

  24. safe to say there are zero Hawks fans making the Trent Dilfer comparison. watch the games. the guy makes plays every time the offense needs them. no reason he should take less than Newton got in his deal.

  25. The kid isn’t dumb. He wants to get paid now because he realizes:

He is an average QB on an elite team

His teammates already don’t like him

Once more members of the defense start leaving to cash in their own paydays, his limitations will become more apparent.

So he uses baseball and any other junk he can come up with as “leverage.” Does ANYONE who us more than a casual fan truly think this kid possesses elite skills? A Houston-less David Carr could have performed better with that supporting cast.

He is David Hasselhoff and the rest of the team are the girls with huge boobs. Can’t blame him for trying to max out now. Nut seeing as the Seattle FO clearly know how to build a team, I don’t think they are falling for it.

  26. Glad he is gone from Wisconsin, and we have never had a great QB. He divorces his white wife at contract time, now shows what is really under that thin veneer of personality. Another greedy, me first, “oh look at me, how beautiful I am.” Thanks Seinfeld.

  27. Oh and BTW, your dorks comparing Russell Wilson to Trent Dilfer should be barred from posting on any website anywhere. The two are so vastly different players its laughable. Just because they are asked to hand off to elite RBs like Lewis and Lynch and have horrendous receiving corps and a great D (even though Baltimore’s Superbowl D was way better then Seattle’s.) doesn’t make the players the same. Get real and quit drinking the kool aid. Your defense makes you a playoff contender, your QB makes you a Superbowl contender. Look at the Superbowl winning QBs over the last 25 years and tell me you’re not better off with a franchise QB then a great D.

  28. QB needy teams (particularly the Browns) would go all in if a proven QB ever hit the open market. How that investment would pay off is another story.

  29. “why is it that everyone knocks the Bills for doing the same thing?”

Because the Bills haven’t been relevant or competently run for more than 15 years. Maybe if they coukd put together a couple of actual winning seasons in acrow someone might take them seriously

  30. It’s so dumb that a 3rd round pick can far exceed his level of pay with play and the team still gets the exclusive non franchise tag that cost a team two first. How do they think of this logic that two first is worth the third. They give the teams way too much leverage in the NFL.

  31. Not a Seahawks fan but I’ll gain tremendous respect for the team if they stand their ground here. Russell sucks and anybody who pays him as if he doesn’t suck is going to regret it.

  32. Either Russell is a bit (or a lot) full of himself or he’s smart as a whip and knows he isn’t a franchise QB and has to capitalize on a big contract now or it may never come. As everyone else has said, he has the team around him now to win and he manages the game really well. I doubt the Browns would be Super Bowl bound with him.

  33. Looks like a situation for John Elway to perform his magic on as the Denver Broncos look toward the future. Let him play this year at Seattle and next year get paid in Denver. With all that Jesus nonsense he’s full of he’d be happy hanging out in Colorado Springs with the Rollers and MegaChurch Focus on the Money people.

Actually, a coincidence is exactly what it is since Wilson’s arrival conveniently coincided with the emergence of the best defense in the NFL and Marshawn Lynch’s resurgence. You’re confusing correlation with causation and doing so badly.

  35. I can not believe all you IDIOTS who say cut him. He is not relevant. Wilson has single handedly won more than a handful of games. HE has kept drives alive he has ran his ass off to keep plays alive with a line made of cheese. Do you even watch football? This guy needs to get paid and stay where he is.

  36. Why is everyone freaking out over this? The media over-exaggerates everything ALL THE TIME, yet there are still dozens of suckers who believe the hype. Thanks to the media, the only people worried about it are the fans. He’ll get a deal done, and will be in Seattle for a long time, plain and simple. Stop whining about it – it’s all part of the process for all big-named players…sheesh…

  37. Last pass was an INT to lose the Super Bowl. Championship game was 4 INT’s.

Russell I would love to have you as a QB but you and your agent clearly don’t understand what a GOOD negotiation position is. You are a top 10 QB in the league and deserves to be paid like one. If you have turned down a good deal then you and your agent are flat out stupid.

Go ahead and hold out then. It’s a good thing that the Seahawks GM is much cooler headed than me because I would have pulled the offer already and said I will franchise you next year and stuck to it. Then I would draft another QB next year in the 1st round. As much as your stupid agent and you have talked it would have ticked me off so much I would have moved on from you.

  38. Just pay him according to his postseason performance, problem solved.

No one who saw him play against Carolina, Green Bay or New England believes he’s worth $20 million +

  39. I bet him being unpopular in the Seahawks locker room is not about his “blackness” and all about him being an egotistical head case.

Wilson is more like Dilfer that he is like Brady. If you believe Wilson is elite and worth elite money, you are either delusional or know little to nothing about football.

Dilfer go nothing substantial alright. Dilfer went down in history as the first quarterback to win the Super Bowl and lose his job before the following season. Wilson lost the SB with a bad throw and interception.

  41. Of course he does, his leverage will never be higher. There’s a pretty good chance the Seahawks will be starting to fall. Russell is a big benificiary of a powerful team that’s not quite as powerful now.

  42. to the people saying ” pay the man”. the seahawks are trying to ” pay the man”. but russell wilson is being extremely greedy. what wrong with 20 mil per year for a mediocre qb.? i think the seahawks are being very generous . but russell is being very delusional.

  43. I love how the 12ers are turning on Wilson now.

Pretty sure this is what EVERYONE has said would happen from day one. Resigning Wilson would severely impact their ability to compete for a championship because he is NOT worth tier 1 QB money. He’s delusional if he believes that and should seriously look at long term stability on a good team and endorsement value over salary per year. If he goes after salary per year, contract won’t last long.

  44. The Seahawks should trade for Sanchez or Hoyer, sit Wilson, and let him watch how any marginal QB can win on that team. Then offer him $10 mil a year. If he doesn’t like it, trade him to the Raiders for Derek Carr and two #1’s.

  45. I can’t blame an NFL player for trying to negotiate for as much as he/she can, and while Russell Nike Wilson is a good QB, I wouldn’t give him elite QB money or even close to that.
A good DC should be able to negate his play. Lynch and the running game should be their bread and butter, especially with the RB talent and depth. Graham should help in the red zone (ahem).
Russell Adidas Wilson throws a pretty good deep ball and their WR crew has the skill to go long. JMHO, but you know who else who could throw a decent occasional deep ball? Tim Voldemort Tebow, and that guy couldn’t throw a football through a tire swing from 3 yards away.
Tebow in that offense for 1.5 mil and 2 1st round picks vs Wilson at 20+ mil is a no brainer to me…

  46. I wouldn’t mess with his agent if I were the Seahawks. God tends to hold a grudge and frankly Seattle isn’t far off from a Biblical flood as it is

  47. I usually don’t empathize with the players on contract disputes, but the franchise tag is really a bummer for some players. If Wilson gets tagged next season he’ll get paid a ton of money, but if he gets hurt or his talent drops off that year then its over. A long term deal would probably net him close to the franchise tag but it’d be guaranteed for years.

  48. lol it don’t matter much the Seahawks can’t afford Wilson anyway so it’s ok the Hawks fans tell them selfs they don’t need him besides there are many other teams in need of QB’s like the Saints Cause Brees only has a yr or two so i wouldn’t be shocked if Wilson hits the market for the Saints to go hard at him & give him what he wants & release Brees
or the Texans could trade there 1st next yr and another QB it would be a good deal

  49. Its great to see all the draftniks come out of the woodwork making suggested trades for the next starting qb. They dont grow in trees but then nobody ever accused a draftnik of having any common sense!

Wilson DESERVES a decent contract he is playing and has played and produced for peanuts. IF (which will never happen) Seattle let him go for nothing there will be multiple teams lining up to sign him to a substantial contract.

If anyone thinks the Seahawks can just plug a body in and be as successful then you have no clue about the game

  50. I can just see this being one of those
“Seattle Fan Darling Today” turns into “Seattle Fan Villain Later” when he signs an NFL record $125 MILLION / 5 YEAR contract somewhere else. I’m thinking Ariz Cards or the Wash Redskin potatoes. Maybe Denver as this is probably P Mannings last year.

  51. I really think the replacement refs’ poor call against the Packers helped the Seahawks win a Super Bowl.

  52. Meanwhile, from Andrew Luck’s camp.. crickets. He just goes to soccer games and hangs out with his girlfriend on weekends, or works out in prep for the coming season. Neither Andrew nor Wilson will miss any meals, and both will eventually get paid. Only one makes the size of his payday the #1 concern in his life. Wilson is really starting to grate on a lot of people, his ego is getting completely out of control. I predict he will be out of Seattle before long.

  53. You’re an idiot if you think the PeeSquawks are going to trade him. Have you looked at the quality of QB play around the league. Glennon??? Please!! Pete Carroll isn’t that stupid. Neither is Wilson. Where would he go that would be a better situation? As a Niner fan, I wish it would be true. Maybe we can swap. THAT IS THE PROBLEM. The Niner’s gave all that money to Kaep. Wilson is getting treated like garbage. Every team re-signs their top rookies to new deals before the rookie deal is up. Why are they doing this to him? Do they really think he isn’t the largest part of their show?? Marshawn gets all that money for grabbing his crotch??? SheMan gets all that money for getting run over and his arm broke???? LOL, beginning of the end. The Shawshanks are going down………..

  54. This is being totally blown out of proportion by the media. Dez was going to hold out ten games, etc. the pressure isn’t there yet. Russell will be a Seahawk until either he retires or is ineffective for a couple of seasons. Nothing to see here, move along….

  55. Everyone says the defense and lynch carries Wilson and his pass numbers are mediocre. People seem to forget his best weapons were Baldwin and Kearse. Bills defense and Jets defense are every bit as good as seattles with far more weapons to throw to on offense.

  56. I think he is going to find out the hard way come next season that as good as he is he’s not as good as he thinks he is and that he’s a product of a system, a good coach and a great defense.

  57. Everybody sees that Russell is not an elite talent, if was in Tampa or Cleveland, he’d be winning 4-5 games a year. The hawks would not miss him, and they know it. Hawks need to stand their ground here.

  58. Dude is coming off more and more like a prima donna.

But still, his trade value has never been higher and may not ever get any higher.

Get a team like Cleveland to give you the world for him (3 firsts and a quality player) and go with another game managing QB.

This guy is so full of himself…he won’t back down.

  59. trade some other player and sign wilson. He is more important than any other player on that team and is more irreplaceable. He has also been remarkably healthy in his career. Unlike sherman, kam, earl thomas, bobby wagner, and Jimmy graham. teams win super bowls with quarterbacks. Only a few QBs can win superbowls. Especially consistently. We have to keep him.

  60. realfootballfan says:

Gates and company never stole anything, he was just a good businessman. He promise IBM an OS and then went out to buy it. For the record, Kildall’s OS was CP/M which have gone the way of the dinosaurs.

  61. Big contract or not, this team is going to crash so hard this season. Russell has shown his true colors and won’t be able to live down the mistake that cost him the contract God thinks he should have; should have just run the ball.

  62. Maybe this is going to get uglier than this trickle of passive-aggressive crap after all. In the end, there is only one certainty — this topic will be the most irritating overplayed topic in the NFL till the guy signs or is traded.

  63. Seattle has control over him for the next 4 years (4th year, 5th year option, franchise tag, franchise tag). He’d be 30 in the offseason before the 2019 season.

The issue isn’t pay for Wilson, it’s how much guaranteed money they want to give him. If he proves he is elite and gets strong stats the next four years and the Seahawks keep winning games they’ll give him the highest salary he wants.

Right now they’re still not sure how good he truly can be and for how long. That’s why they don’t have to panic, because they have plenty of time to sort things out.

  64. I think Wilson is worth big money cam got paid kap is going to get paid yeah they have good d and a running game but 90 percent of the time when its time Russ doesn’t make mistakes .. So if they don’t wanna pay him top dollar believe me someone will !

  65. Wow, everyone gives dez bryant a pass after pouting for the last year about his contract while Wilson is the straw that stirs the drink in Seattle. This guy is under a four year deal for 2.9 million total dollars. They should have redid his deal a year ago. Keep bad mouthing Trent Dilfer, but Baltimore went nowhere for years after the let him go. Just keep dissing a guy cause he loves Jesus.
Dude should have two rings out of his first three years.
Just hope he stays in the NFC west, he would make the browns a winner instantly….

  66. I’m sure Pete Carroll and the front office braintrust can find another QB without Scott McCloughan running the draft anymore. Charlie Whitehurst, T. Jack, or Matt Flynn anybody? Also, the people bringing up how good the Seattle defense is like it’s the ’85 Bears sound clueless. Teams that win the Super Bowl tend to have good defenses, or maybe you should ask Tom Brady after he didn’t have one for 10 years and kept losing in the playoffs and a couple of Super Bowls when he didn’t.

  67. Russell Wilson is a great QB, no doubt, but when he listens to his agent, or god, and decides that he is worth more than his team, he loses a little credibility.

Call Tom Brady a cheater, say he benefits from the hoodie, but never call him selfish. Brady puts keeping a winning team first, and never shouts about needing to be the highest paid QB. Look at his pay ranking, he is barely in the top ten, yet has six superbowl appearances and four wins. GOAT.

Paying Wilson more than Brady? Well, who’s going to buy that jersey?

  68. These delusional Hawks Fans and John Schneider forgot that their team didn’t go anywhere with the same D and Lynch until Wilson came on board to lead them. PAY the MAN!!!

  69. I liked him coming out of college and wanted the Dolphins to get him in the 2nd or 3rd if they didn’t get Tannehill. Now, he is rapidly becoming unbearable. Regardless of what some may say, it is quite obvious to me that his attitude has changed and not for the better. He is a sufficient QB but can’t really carry a team. Paying these QBs just because it’s ‘their turn’ seems crazy to me.

  70. The guy has been grossly underpaid by the Seahawks, borderline “Abuse”. I can understand why he wants his money after he has proven himself. PAY the MAN!!!

Pay the dam man Seattle its hard to get a good QB these days
    =================================
    Is Wilson playing for nothing????
Insert “Overpay” instead of “pay” and you may have something miles closer to the truth!!!
I think most on here understand how delusional he is and how they can save money looking elsewhere for a QB to go with their tough D and running game.

  74. The Browns have been modeling their rebuild after the Seahawks. Building a strong defense and a strong running game. They have one of the best offensive lines in the game. If they get even an average QB they will compete for a playoff spot. People will laugh but its the truth. They are blinded by the popular Cleveland hating. For better or worse I can see the Browns going after him if he gets franchised. Start with 2 first rounders, a 3rd rounder, & Johnny Manziel.

  75. With each new story about Russell Wilson I like him a little less.

Seems like his Golden Boy Good Guy image was kind of a shame, like many suspected all along.

  76. Russell will get paid a reasonable amount and remain a Hawk for a long time. The Hawks will fight their way back to home field advantage in the playoffs. I can’t wait for Sept 13th where I will personally attend the week 1 game in St. Louis and witness Russell’s first TD pass to Graham. Go HAWKS

  77. If the Seahawks aren’t willing to pay Wilson a huge chunk of cash then some OTHER TEAMS will.

  78. The Trent Dilfer comparisons are idiotic. He was far more integral to his team’s success than Dilfer.

But his premature bid for a new contract is idiotic, too.
He’s frittering away his leverage with each new statement.

  79. To the person who said they should have traded him for a pick and mike glennon. Call me crazy but I like glennon. Apparently him and Wilson are close too, not sure if they went to the same college. Glennon is getting a raw deal behind lovie smith, when he was playing under schiano he actually looked like a decent qb.

  80. Some people;
“blah blah blah…… PAY the MAN!!!”

Sooooo tired of hearing this! I honestly believe these folks are working for his agent.
Think about the team that Seahawks have built and are trying to maintain. Shall we through all that away on one selfish young QB??

  81. @narfmoo12:

    Mike Vick #’s. Congrats.

He’s not the reason Seattle is a dominant team.

Take away that secondary and Lynch and see what happens.

  82. No need for the Seahawks to do anything. They have a contract with the man they want, and will have options in their favor next year.

  83. Dang Russell…… You work your butt off and righteously beat Matt Flynn for the starting position as a rookie. You conduct yourself accordingly as a professional. Bring the Hawks to the limelight granted you didn’t do it by yourself. If your not the heart of the team your the Soul and Will of the team. TWO SuperBowls later your being constantly disrespected. Thank you for bringing so much money to my city. Just go somewhere where they will pay you what your worth and appreciate you Bro…. Because the real fans remember before you; winning was a Dream and a wish. Show them what that feels like again when you leave. Everyone does not possess natural leadership. #RESPECT

  84. Can’t wait til this kid proves everyone wrong. He’s been doing it his whole life. Then to see the comments when it happens…scratch that you will be apologizing for doubting Russell. The deal is gonna get done. GO HAWKS!

  85. I’m hoping and praying that he gets traded to the AFC. I’m just stunned at how little credit Hawks fans wanna give him and how much credit they want to give to the defense. I’m truly shocked by this. Go ahead and trade him and then get used to 8-8 mediocrity for 10 years while you watch him turn a different mediocre franchise into a contender. It’s almost like Seattle is so full of itself after a few great years that they forgot how horribly average they were as a franchise since they’ve been in the league. That’s the front office and fans both.

  86. Wilson knows that with the salary cap, you can’t overpay one player and have enough left over to have a competitive team.

I think the players union has more say in this situation than Wilson does.

  87. I see people are finally getting on board with what I’ve been saying since this guys rookie season. He’s an average QB that was carried by his defense just like all these other Super Bowl teams: 2000 Ravens Brad Johnson, 2002 Bucs Rob Johnson, 2003 Panthers Jake Delhomme, 2006 Bears Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton, 2012 49ers Colin Kaepernick.

    Welcome to the club Wilson.

Lots of white players divorce their white wives for various reasons, what’s your point? That black players are not allowed to divorce their white wines. Who is showing their true color regarding race or inter racial relationships. His contractual wishes have nothing to do with relationships though he should play it smart and simply not marry and snip himself.

  89. The NFC west wants Seattle to pay him like the best QB in football. That would mean more wins for the NFC West; as Seattle can’t keep that roster by giving Wilson big money under the salary cap.

  90. Let’s put it this way, since Wilson wants significantly more money than Aaron Rodgers…

Seattle plays in Green Bay week 2. Packers will probably be slight favorites– like -1.5 or so. Now just imagine that same game, but Rodgers and Wilson swap teams– the line is Seattle -8 easily. Just imagine that team– Aaron Rodgers on the Seahawks. It’s like if the 85 Bears had Marino.

No way he is worth that money and John Schneider knows it. He’s great, just not THAT great.

  91. No chance the Seahawks will ever let him go. Zero. To presume such is preposterous. They would trade and/or cut their entire starting defense to make cap room for Wilson if they had to. He’s not going anywhere.

However, a straight up in-division trade for Carson Palmer might be interesting, seeing as Palmer once played for Pete Carroll. Of course, it would be a ridiculous thing for the Seahawks to do, seeing as Carson Palmer sucks and all.

  92. rodgersequalsmvp- seahawks fans love RW what are you talking about. Of course their are a few butt hurt fans but most of these detractors are people who want Seattle to fail thus making stupid comparisons. I mean trent dilfer was close to throwing 14 tds and 11 ints and people are comparing that to someone who combined for nearly 30 tds and lead the most 4th qtr comebacks. Just plainly stupid and no way as a hawks fan do I believe their anywhere near the same level.

Most people on her spewing garbage are haters.. Also Seattle since joining the NFC back in the early 2000’s is among the top 4-5 teams in the entire NFL. They have won their division more times than the niners cards rams COMBINED!! They are among league leaders in playoffs appearences wins overall games Sb appearances in that time. Please keep up the good fight but don’t throw us fans under the bus with nonsense. Outside of 3-4 seasons in which the cards and niners were sb contenders the Seattle Seahawks have been one of the best teams in the NFC and one of the top 5 organizations. We just didn’t win the big one so no one noticed or took them serious.

  93. Russell Wilson: Pay me or I’m going to play major league baseball!

Every single baseball scout: LOL. Enjoy your time in AA ball. Hope the bus rides are comfy.

This was an interview with Ian Rapoprt. It was NOT an interview with Wilson or his agent

We’ve all been duped….This is just an interview with Rapoport

  95. The posts from the low info fans are hilarious. The Seattle franchise can be divided into two distinct eras 1) BEFORE WILSON and 2) AFTER WILSON.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know the difference, but at least someone actually watches the game. Put it this way, the NFC Championship game in 2012 vs the Falcons, capsulizes the Russell Wilson era. He brought them back from a 3 TD deficit, to take the lead, only to have the vaunted defense lose the game with 32 seconds on the clock.

If they don’t sign Wilson, Schneider will NEVER work in the NFL again and he will be judged harsher than Carroll for the interception call, last year.

  96. To those saying a Wilson – Dilfer comparison is not fair, think about this. Can Wilson carry a Cleveland or Oakland type team to the playoffs? No way. He can’t even carry Seattle. Take away 3 or 4 guys from the roster and Seattle is a 4 – 5 win team. Wilson isn’t great, he is barely good enough to start in the NFL. Quit calling him elite. You are embarrassing yourself if you think he is elite.

C’mon….You can put Brady, Rodgers, or Luck on Cleveland or Oakland and none of them will take those teams to the playoffs either.

  98. This guy would be making a big career mistake playing at $1.5m. That’s alot of risk to take on for not much gain. I can’t imagine his stock going up even further.

  99. Of the three drafted – Wilson, Luck and RGIII – Wilson is the only one with a SB Ring. Luck may have his next year, and RGIII, well, he’ll always have the Heisman…

I’m not saying he’s the reason the Seahawks won that year, but Wilson led that team better than any quarterback did before him. I can’t even remember a QB before Russel, they were that unnoticeable. Jake Locker maybe? Some guy named Stan?

Anyway, I figure he’s their best shot back unless he’s burned any goodwill in the locker room with salary talks, abstinence, and God talk.

Otherwise, Seattle can sit back and watch others play in the playoffs for another 10 or so years while they count their money.

  100. The smart move would be to hold out now because Russell makes no money and force Seahawks hand. If he were to had a bad injury this year he’s screwed.

If you’re going to include history, include ALL of history. What were the Seahawks doing in the AFC West, certainly not challenging the Niners in the superbowls. While the niners cementing their DYNASTY when winning the superbowl FIVE TIMES, the Seahawks weren’t doing NOTHING. If the Seahawks stayed in the NFC West like they were from the beginning, they would have been torn to pieces by the niners for 2 decades.

  102. Has Russell Wilson ever read up about that God he always talks about? Is he aware that the very same God is against divorce and rich men?

Seattle has control over him for the next 4 years (4th year, 5th year option, franchise tag, franchise tag). He’d be 30 in the offseason before the 2019 season.

The issue isn’t pay for Wilson, it’s how much guaranteed money they want to give him. If he proves he is elite and gets strong stats the next four years and the Seahawks keep winning games they’ll give him the highest salary he wants.

Right now they’re still not sure how good he truly can be and for how long. That’s why they don’t have to panic, because they have plenty of time to sort things out.

No, they only have three years. Wilson does not have a 5th year option as he was not a first round draft pick.

They basically have 10 days to retain Wilson or he will hit the open market in essence. His agent wil be demanding so much the Hawks might very well have to trade Wilson to another team as a tier 1 contract would cripple the team and certainly cause Wagner and Irvin to depart after the season.

  104. Come on, Seahawks! Pay the man! Don’t you want to know what it feels like trying to field a Superbowl caliber team when you’re actually paying your franchise QB what he’s worth?

  105. It really is fun to see the Seahawks fraying at the seams here.

You hear so much about Wilson being a great charecter guy, and this and that.

But you don’t get to get paid thew way you want to get paid when you HAND a championship to another team.

Believe me, the ‘Hawks are keeping that INT, and his performance against GB in the NFC Championship in mind before paying him.

Marshawn is just about done, they are now having to lock up all their guys on defense. No way they pay a small, above average QB Elite Money.

  106. Seattle should let Wilson’s agent determine his value as worthy of being the highest paid QB in the NFL.

Let the agent arrange an even up trade with either the Packers, Colts, or Patriots…their starting QB for Wilson. Of course, the team would have to make Wilson the highest paid QB in the deal.

Wilson should go like a hotcake.

  107. Well, all this distraction does not bode well for the Seahawks. Add to that a SB hangover being the losing team, and well, its just not good.

  108. As soon as he threw that pick to end the SB, the Seahawks window slammed shut. He knows he needs to get the money now, cause it won’t be there later when he’s starting in Cleveland after being traded for a 7th round pick.

There is no 5th year option, he wasn’t a 1st round pick.
