Jermaine Gresham to visit Cardinals this week

There aren’t too many players available on the open market that could provide upgrades for teams before they start training camp, but tight end Jermaine Gresham could do that for someone.

Gresham was thought to be a possible Raiders signing early in the offseason, but physical exams during his free agent visit showed that Gresham needed to have back surgery. That’s left Gresham without a team for the 2015 season after the operation, something he’ll try to remedy with a visit this week.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Gresham will visit the Cardinals, who saw their depth at the position take a hit when John Carlson retired in May. Arizona has Troy Niklas, Darren Fells, Ted Bolser and seventh-round pick Gerald Christian on the depth chart right now.

Gresham visited with the Saints last month and coach Sean Payton said he thought there was a fit for Gresham in New Orleans, but no deal has materialized. Schefter reports that Gresham has other visits planned in the next two weeks and that he’s expected to sign somewhere before training camps get underway for all 32 teams.

  1. I thought that he may end up with the Cards after Carlson retired after the draft. If he is healthy, he would be a huge upgrade. If he is not healthy, he will be of lil use like the rest of the Cards tight ends of late…

  2. Good for him. I hope he catches on somewhere. He wasn’t a good fit in Cincinnati.

  3. So, the Raiders passed on him because he needs back surgery, but he expects someone else to sign him, anyway? And someone actually might sign him?

    Something’s not adding up here…

  4. Every Bengals fan holds their breath when this guy got the ball…always tried to stretch out the ball resulting in a fumble…can’t believe how many times he did it smh…not to mention he was a holding machine and had stone hands…wore out his welcome in Cincy

  5. Cardinals could be good this year. Solid defense, plus improved O-line, Fitzgerald, Brown, Floyd and Gresham. Not sure if they can win the division, but they could reasonably be a wild card team.

  6. I’ve always thought it was imperative for a team to sign an underachiever coming off of back surgery if they want to have success…

  7. Hands of stone, malcontent, never lived up to his draft status. His Pro Bowels were gifts as all the players ahead of him were hurt. He and Carson Palmer deserve each other!!

  8. Gresham would be good for Az. He will have a game or two where he does really well. He is a good blocker. His questionable decisions in open space is a concern

He is out for the season but Cards think they can use him??

He had the surgery in March for a herniated disk. That doesn’t put him out for the season, goober.

  10. He is guaranteed to make 1-2 bonehead plays every game i.e. fumble, holding, false start, dropped pass, wrong route etc.
He is a good blocker and could be a great receiver but he just doesn’t seem to care enough. I’ve seen him laugh after making stupid plays.
Also, took himself out of a game when he was cleared…. A PLAYOFF game when we were already down a few WRs and TE.

To be fair, it did turn out that he needed back surgery. I just don’t think he’s a good fit for the Bengals. 99% of his problems are in his head. If he can get some help with that, and If he gets with coaches who he will listen to, he can have a decent career. But it was not a good first round pick.

  12. Lots of upside. Incredibly stupid. Completely immature. Whiner. Lazy. Hot head. Holding Machine. Drops everything. Fumbles everything. Doesn’t care if the sun comes up. Other than that he’s terrific!

  13. Must be desperate to go back to palmer he never threw him the ball never even seemed like hed even look in his direction

    NOT ACCURATE.

In Gresham’s rookie season (only season w/ Palmer)… Gresham totaled 52 rec. – 471 yards (83 targets!!!) while playing w/ selfish, annoying chad ochojohnson, selfish, annoying terrell owens, and veteran mediocre high character TE Reggie Kelly (…and an amazing rookie WR named Jordan Shipley whose bright future was derailed by a career ending knee injury in the 2nd week of 2011… ACL and MCL ).

Given the crowded circumstances… Palmer/Gresham achieved a lot and appeared to have a bright future (even if you notice the massive amount of targets and .

ALL THAT SAID… he won’t be missed.

  15. The story in New Orleans was that a tentative deal was offered…but the Saints were leery due to his back issues so not all the money would have been guaranteed. We’ll see if the Cards are willing to risk more…for ???

  16. Good riddance! He and Palmer are made for each other. One quits on his routes routinely and the other is just a quitter in general. A match made in heaven! Good luck Cards fans..your gonna need it if your hoping for this chump to help you out! He’s got a bad back and a bad attitude in general, pretty much a punk of the first order!

  18. Hmmm, catch passes from Carson Palmer (or whatever no name guy is under center) or Drew Brees? Now, that’s a tough one!

  19. I would love to see him in Chicago. Even if Martellus Bennett is straightened out for the season, he is a huge upgrade over Dante Rosario, and if healthy, would be a solid second TE. Putting Jeffery, White, Bennett, and Gresham out there would be scary for defenses to manage. If Bennett continues to be a head case (seems likely to me), Gresham would be a great consolation. Besides, TE in the Bears offense is going to be a lesser role, with Royal, Jeffery, Forte, and White all needing significant targets.

Herniated discs can be debilitating for normal people, let alone a guy who needs to use every part of his body in ways that most people never dream of. If he is healthy and cleared for contact, it is a no-brainer to sign him to a 1-year “prove it” deal, and see what he has left. New Orleans should be pounding on his agent’s door to sign him to replace Graham.
