Sammy Watkins: It’s a problem if we don’t make playoffs

Getty Images

Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins has spent the offseason recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip, something that allowed him to slow down after a whirlwind first year in the NFL.

Watkins thinks that’s a positive, saying that his body “feels great” heading into training camp and that he was able to spend time focusing on the coaching he was getting from new receivers coach Sanjay Lal over the last few months. Watkins says the wideouts were “kind of limited” by the coaching last season, but that Lal’s coaching has given him a greater understanding about how to succeed in the NFL.

Watkins’s individual success is going to be tied to quarterback play and that may not work out well for him statistically unless someone wildly overperforms the meager expectations for the Bills signal callers. Watkins isn’t letting it limit his expectations for the team, though.

“Winning, playoffs, championship,” Watkins said, via the Buffalo News. “We’ve got a great team and great coaches. I mean, there’s just no way we shouldn’t be in the playoffs or win a championship. I mean, with the team and coaches and staff that we have, and what they’re doing to bring us together, I think that there’s no doubt that we should win our division and be in the playoffs. It’s a problem if we don’t.”

The defense and collection of skill position players definitely look ready to make a run at a playoff spot in Buffalo. It’s tough to win with the offensive line and quarterback play playing at a low level, however, and the Bills have to get more from those spots before they can mount a serious playoff push.

  1. Sure Sammy, but in the long history of the SB era only 3 teams have had garbage qb’s win it all. The odds are not in your favor!

  2. Seems like only players from losing teams/ not use to wining talk about of how great of a team they are and how this they year they can win a Championship.

Players like AR12 know are hard it is to win a championship, you don’t see them talk about how they are so great and talented.

  3. Well, at 15 years (and counting) since sniffing a playoff spot, I’d say it’s a problem too!

And Wrecks is not a “great coach.” A blowhard, yes. A delusional wannabe, yes. But his record doesn’t show any signs of greatness.

Watkins better be a good run blocker.

  4. This “great team” has no QB and an awful offensive line, what a great team.

    SMH.

  5. You think the wideouts were “kind of limited” by the coaching last year, Sammy? Wait til you get a real close look at Rex’s “ground and pound” version of an NFL offense. THEN you’ll know what limited REALLY is.

  6. People may laugh- but if they wanted a young QB with some experience, call the Titans and trade for Mettenberger

  7. Great to be confident but time to shut up and put up. Don’t need to give Pats any motivational material.

  8. Sammy is correct. Even with the lack of a franchise QB, the Bills have ample superior talent at other position for them to win the AFC East. If they don’t the year will be a disappointment.

  9. While EJ Manual’s stats were nothing to write home about, he was 6-8 in the 14 games he played most while injured and with less of a supporting cast. Enough of the QB bashing we get it, he will have to play well in order for us to win. So will every other QB. But Buffalo is stacked everywhere else.

  10. …..if you want to make it to the playoffs, you’re going to need to step it up BIG time son. Oh, by the way, that might be hard to do with NO QB to throw you the football.

  11. All 52 players on all 32 teams should feel that it’s a problem if you don’t make the playoffs. It’s July 27th. Everyone is healthy and all teams are undefeated.

  12. Watkins is a good player. McCoy is a good player. No one else on the Bills offense is better that NE offensive players.

The Patriots front 7 on defense are just as good as the Bills. Worse secondary for the Patriots though.

Shady at his beat can be a very elite player in the league like Gronk. Call that a wash, even though I think Gronk was much better last year.

For me Brady is still the key difference. He has proven he can move he ball against good defenses. The Bills may end up with the worst QB in the league.

The Bills need to win the home game against the Patriots. That’s a must win, Brady or no Brady.

  13. It’s ok Sammy, you haven’t been around long enough to know Buffalo doesn’t win. If your expecting that you must see a trade in your future.

  14. “I think that there’s no doubt that we should win our division and be in the playoffs. It’s a problem if we don’t.”

Well in that case, you have a problem. Put down the Rexy kool-aid long enough to look at that line and the guys you are going to have under center. When you are done doing that take a look at what division you are in, there’s plenty of doubt.

  15. Bills fans are incredibly excited for the coming season after all the changes and moves made during the offseason. Season tix sales are at an all time high and there are hardly any individual game tix available right now including the Dec games which traditionally have been hard to sell.

Having said that until the QB situation is resolved it will be hard to really count on making the playoffs, even with all the talent the Bills have on both sides of the ball right now. But the Bills are definately in “win now” mode and if they don’t make the playoffs there will be tremendous disappointment in WNY.

  16. Did he just say that there is no doubt that they will win their division? Let’s start this season I’m tired of these scrub teams talking trash. Time to crush some spirits. Go pats.

  17. People will make jokes about this, but this is a good football team. If they can get a QB to be Alex Smith like, then they have a shot to be 10-6 and make the playoffs. They have tons of playmakers on offense and the defense is no doubt top 5. A wildcard spot is completely realistic in my book and it’s good that the players are expecting success.

  18. Interesting. A second year player talking about playoffs and championships while the (child beating) veteran AP is only talking about personal stats.

  19. Doug Whaley is the worst GM in the league.
Lots of horsepower under the hood, but this bum left this team without a driver behind the wheel.

Watkins will be a huge, huge talent, and by the time he has a QB to throw him the ball, it’ll be contract time….

  20. bullcharger………The Patriots front 7 is as good as the Bills? Dude, you need to be drug tested. And the Bills 2nd best WR on their team Woods, is better than any WR on the Patriots.

  21. Well, I guess you’re going to have a problem then Sammy.

You aren’t getting anywhere near the playoffs with EJ Manuel or Matt Castle as your QB.

With Rex Ryan there, you’ll be lucky to catch 4 passes a game. Work on that run blocking technique!

  22. bullcharger says:

The Patriots front 7 on defense are just as good as the Bills.??

Not. Even. Close. Get off the koolaid.

  23. The offense may be a run first philosophy but people keep forgetting the past success Roman had with much less talent. Rex may be driving the personality of the team but Greg Roman is in full control of the play calling and may be the most qualified coordinator Rex has had since becoming a head coach.
Sammy is being optimistic but every player and every team should have that goal.. Make the playoffs and win the division.

  24. Ah, the innocent part of the year where we get to hear how THIS is definitely the year when the Bills/Dolphins/Jets are finally going to win the AFC East. Enjoy it now… but in the back of your mind, start coming up with some handy excuses to roll out by the end of September.

  25. Typical Rex Ryan team: Jumping ahead to the playoffs instead of focusing on Week 1….which is why without a change in attitude they will never be a Championship caliber team.

  26. bullcharger………The Patriots front 7 is as good as the Bills? Dude, you need to be drug tested. And the Bills 2nd best WR on their team Woods, is better than any WR on the Patriots.

I’ll take Edelman all day long and you can have woods. It sounds like your GM has been listening to this Bills fan and they think they have the best team. Optimism is nice but try to be realistic.

I have to agree with Billswillnevermove here. Is there any way PFT can put a block on Canadian traffic? Canadians, stick to hockey and bad driving.

  28. Sorry, Sammy, but the Bills aren’t going anywhere without a serviceable QB. None of the QBs on the roster are even close to being serviceable. Maybe the Bills can make a run at Russell Wilson in the next offseason.

  29. Keyboard anyalysts say blah blah blah

Here’s what we know: traning camp hasn’t started yet, and any guy who’s not a moron will say he likes the way his team is looking.

Season just start now so all these “experts” commenting on here can stop with their “predictions” about all 32 teams- which are 5% rooted in fact and 95% rooted in some combination of trying to be funny or regurgitating what they saw or heard someone else say.

I don’t know why I bother with the morons who patronize this site.

  30. The coaching he’s been getting, is Lal teaching Sammy how to throw the ball to himself.

As fast as he is, he’s still having trouble throwing the 40 yard deep out. Hopefully, by end of camp, he’ll have it down.

Hard to believe a franchise can be so numb (and dumb) in the handling of the QB position. This team would be at or near the top, with a QB who could run an offense.

  31. Pats fans are funny.
If/when Brady gets taken out, it’s a 2-14 team with ZERO hope.

  32. Why are the positive comments about the Bills being downvoted? Oh that’s right, Pats fan downvote brigade has raided this article as well. Doesn’t anyone in Boston have a life outside of internet sports comment sections?

  33. Oline is much improved.

I don’t think people realize how terrible Marrone and Hackett were. They won 9 games in spite for them. Bills could have easily won 11 games last year

I would take the Bills D line and the Patriots linebackers.

  37. Maybe we should make this into another save Brady thread so all the Pats fans have a reason to continue to troll here. Front 7 the same as the Bills ?? What color is the sky in your world ?

  38. They could bring in a great QB and it wouldn’t matter if they have no OL. A guy needs time to throw.

Hahahahaha! Ok, now Bills fans are sensitive? Look back at any of the 2,000 articles regarding the Patriots since December. Patriots trolls? Boo hoo hoo, give me a break.

  40. Just bewildered at all the hatred toward an awesome fan based team that has been underdogs for 15 years…regardless of the qb situation Sammy is one of the most exciting young players in the league right now…and why would he not say these things ? should he say well we don’t have Brady, Rodgers, brees, manning, e.t.c. so were going to lose a lot and miss the playoffs until we get one of them guys…no…and its not impossible to win w/ one of the three qbs they have right now…we wont know til season starts, but if you are a pats fan why be so nervous?? makes no sense.

  41. billswillnevermove says:

bullcharger………The Patriots front 7 is as good as the Bills? Dude, you need to be drug tested. And the Bills 2nd best WR on their team Woods, is better than any WR on the Patriots.

    ——–

Edelman is way better than Woods. Lafell is also better. Both based on stats and results.

Woods has potential but he’s far from better at the moment.

Mayo, Hightower and Collins are better than all the Bills LBs. Brown looks like a beast for us. Jones is great. Lots of first and second round talent. Definitely as good as the Bills.

  42. In all honesty who on offense do they even have outside of Brady and Gronk…they also lost about 4-5 starters on D…and that offensive line in NE is not nearly as stable as it has been in recent years…also vereen is gone and he caught about a thousand passes the couple seasons…I can’t predict futures like you pats fans, but your team is not as talented as it has been and think it is, but we shall see…I know without Brady that team would maybe win 5 games at best.

  43. The Jets and Dolphins both improved their rosters as well and the Pats will continue to be big contenders. Buffalo has the worst QB situation in the division and yes I”m including Geno Smith. Bills also have arguably the worst O-line in the division, maybe MIA? Point is, the Bills are building something and aren’t the joke they have been for so long, but to think they are a playoff team with that Oline and QB is laughable. The only reason they finished above .500 last season was because they played the Patriots scout team to end the year. Improved team, no doubt but a playoff/championship contender? Not yet.

  44. and you can’t sit there and compare WR’s from the pats to the wrs on the bills…lafell has been no one until he started catching balls fro Brady….and Edelman would not be half agood if he wasn’t the only option to throw to the past 2 years…if brady had Watkins, Woods, Harvin, Clay, Mccoy…he would shatter all passing records …you would also see guys like Goodwin and Hogan turn into the pats version of Edelman…Woods is def better than Lafell and Edelman if Brady is throwing him passes.

  45. OMG!! Lafell is better than Woods? He was a bust in Carolina. Woods is way better. And Nige Bradham and Preston Brown are pretty darn good LB’s. And Jerry Hughes is better than all three you listed on your team. Collins on your team is up and coming. Bills LB’s are just as good.

  46. It’s going to be funny to read the comments section regarding the Bills as the season moves along. There’s going to be a lot of backtracking, deflecting and crying “fluke” come January.

To Colts fans, you’re starting the season 0-1.

    Go Bills!

    ———

Just saying that Lafell caught 7 TDs for nearly 1000 yards and played well in the playoffs catching a few big TDs. That’s better than Woods has done so far. Maybe he’s more talented and will be better, but not so far.

Good arguments from your side. As a Patriots fan living in Toronto if the Patriots can’t win I always hope the Bills can get over the hump. Here’s to a Bills – Patriots AFC championship. Looking forward to seeing how it plays out on the field.

  49. Just take a few minutes to ponder this:

Does Rex Ryan strike you as the kind of guy who is flexible, open-minded, and is always willing to modify his strategy? Or does Rex Ryan strike you as the kind of guy who believes he knows all he needs to know already about the game of football?

Rex Ryan is an old school defensive-minded head coach who believes that defense win championships and offenses are basically just there to manage/not lose games. That’s been his M.O. ever since he became a head coach, and that is not going to change.

He is radical when it comes to his defensive schemes (which sometimes results in him getting burned at the worst possible times) and ultra conservative when it comes to the offensive schemes. That’s just the way he is. Sometimes that works out in his favor, especially when playing inferior teams. But like with Schottenheimer, Cameron, Fox, and Andy Reid, once the post season arrives all bets are off because this has become a QB drive league. And without a QB who can cover a lot of ground and put a lot of points on the board in a hurry, Rex’s teams are always limited. And it’s by design. It’s just the way it is.

  50. EJ Manuel will surprise people this year. While his stat line isnt exactly great, he managed it while getting pressured more than almost any other QB. On top of that he had a college level HC and a college level OC, both of which are now position coaches in Jacksonville…yeah, that bad.

Even if Rex is just a blowhard, hes 2-3x the coach Doug Marrone was. And Greg Roman is one of the better OCs in the NFL right now and brings with him an offense that fits Manuels play style perfectly.

He isnt going to be Aaron Rodgers, but EJ Manuel could be the second best QB in the division before this season is over.

  51. Bills fans please dont disappear off these boards in October when your starting to piece your 2016 mock drafts together for that top 10 pick you guys annually have.

When Brady retires it’s all going to end because Bill B will retire at the same time.

  55. Aha the of-season where every team is doing great things until reality hits hard somewhere in October. Its like a rinse and repeat every time.

  56. “We won’t. But we won’t look for you either, you won’t have a first round pick……taken away by cheating, remember?”

    Fixed that for you.

Sad that the owners of the Colts, Ravens, et al. have decided that they cannot beat the Pats fair and square, so they have to bully Goodell into imposing punishments when there’s no evidence of wrongdoing.

The NFL FO is about as ridiculous as you can get. Any time you have Troy frickin’ Vincent in charge* of handing out penalties for anything, you have to think long and hard about how you reached this place.

Wells report says the Patriots were generally cooperative, except for in how one witness was not made available for a fifth interview. Vincent declares that this is unacceptable and hands down the biggest team penalty in NFL history.

Revenge for Super Bowl XXXIX. Nothing more than that.

*Can’t remember – are we pretending that Vincent was in charge and Goodell was neutral or that Goodell was in charge since the CBA says that he was the only one authorized to hand down punishments. Which is it today?

You know nothing about being a Boston sports fan. We remember the Pats of the early ’90s. We remember how even Boston sportswriters (cough – as if Dan S. deserves the label) were making money by dumping on the Red Sox. Don’t worry about us. For years we were told that the Pats couldn’t win a title “without cheating” even though the Spygate memo wasn’t even written until 2006. And then the Pats win another title, but the haters claim it’s tainted because the NFL front office doesn’t know air pressure from farts and thinks it has “conclusive evidence” of cheating when cold weather lowers air pressure. And then nobody involved can admit that they simply made a mistake, so we have to endure 6 months of nonsense – the absurd Wells report, the fact that the NFL got the answer they didn’t want from the Columbia University Dept. of Physics and went to Exponent instead, the kangaroo court of Goodell, and the “key owners” who won’t let Goodell admit that they made a mistake. Because the owners believe their own propaganda.

I really hope this gets to court. Regardless, by the time December rolls around, all the accusations will have been debunked completely by people doing more measurements. Can we get the last 6 months back? Can the Pats be treated like deserving champions instead of being the victims of a smear campaign? It’s going to be too little, too late.

  59. To the guy that said EJ could be second best QB in the division….no.

This is Brady’s division, then Tannehill, then you can flip a coin week to week on EJ and Geno

  60. According to 90% of the expert commentators, the Seahawks also have a mediocre qb and a blow hard for a head coach. It’s their defense and RB that wins games for them. They’ve been in the SB 2 years in a row now and minus one bad play call, would be the winners of the last 2 SB’s.

Knowing that and looking at the Bills roster, Watkins is right on here and they absolutely should be representing the AFC in the SB this year.

Unless of course, the expert commenters here on PFT are completely wrong about Wilson and Carroll.

  61. Well they should muster 4 easy wins against the Jets and the Dolphins…. They need to find 6-7 more wins somewhere.

  62. the starting qb for the bills is not yet on their roster…i think sanchez or vick are going to get signed sometime in training camp

we need ej to be the guy, otherwise the 2016 draft will be lets go shopping for a qb again and this team is ready to win now…..i don’t think the 9ers are ready to give up on kapernick in a trade, and there aren’t many options for the bills in veteran free agency and i heard the next 2 drafts are weak on qbs

  63. If you really want to win the AFC East – ya gotta come up with some good smear campaign or a botched sting operation against the Patriots to get their best player suspended so you’ll have a much better chance….oh wait

  64. The attitude you need. Samsonite Watkins is going for 1400 and 12 TDs. Most importantly becoming a leader on a ever changing offense that needs stability and leadership!
