NFL asks police to keep an eye out for Patriots fans at Goodell’s house

The NFL is reportedly concerned about Commissioner Roger Goodell’s personal safety as a result of his decision to suspend Tom Brady for the first four games of the season.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Goodell owns a $6.5 million house in Scarborough, Maine, an area where most fans’ allegiance is to the Patriots. As a result, the NFL contacted Scarborough police just before Goodell announced his decision to uphold Brady’s suspension.

They did reach out and let us know about the decision and that it might not be popular,” said Scarborough Police Chief Robbie Moulton.

Moulton added that there have been no problems or threats, but the police department is aware of the possibility of fans expressing their displeasure if Goodell makes an unpopular decision.

“We’re aware of the situation and will be patrolling the area certainly,” Moulton said. “In the past, when there have been unpopular decisions, there have been emails and things. I wouldn’t say it rose to the level of threats, but certainly expressing unhappiness.”

It should go without saying that Goodell and his family should be free of threats and harassment in their own home. If Goodell is concerned about the reactions of Patriots fans around his home, however, it will probably be a long time before he takes in a game at Gillette Stadium.

  1. Wow… what a coward. He’s going to lie to the public and hide behind the police???

  2. You have to be some kind of sick to actually do something like that.

    Perspective, people.

Just like the idiots that get all bent out of shape because of what somebody said on a football message board, like this.

  3. As a Pats fan, that’s never gonna happen with 99.6% of the fanbase. But you never know these days. This is a mudshow, btw.

  4. Situations like this should never result in vandalism or physical altercation. We all love the game and our teams, but it’s still a game.

  5. evidence of threats?

or is this just more of the orchestrated PR campaign?

the NFL is corrupt to the core

  6. Wow Patriots fans really you are just like your Role Model. Cant let things go and accept your punishment always have to go that extra step to embarass yourselves.

  7. sheesh – maybe Goodell should use some of his millions to get a security guard or 2 if he’s that concerned instead of wasting tax payer money and police time to watch over him

  8. He knows he’s wrong but can’t stop himself, so he asks for the gubment’s help in keeping the plebs off his lawn.

    lulz.

  10. I don’t blame him, I am sure there are a lot of patriots fans that are attached to the right wing terrorist party…The GOP cult.

  11. As a Pats fan I have to agree. Even though he is a dispicable human being and terrible commish, he should not have to worry about his own, his family’s, or his property’s well-being. Anyone taking threats or actions of that nature will and should be thrown in jail.

  12. Hahaha… the “potential” of something happening. More spin. Roger, all you had to do is tell the truth… now you have to move out of Gods country. See what lying does?

  13. Pleeeease… get over yourself.

I would have expected Roger is be more afraid of the Baltimore fans – you know the ones who gave a STANDING OVATION to their wife beating runnbing back during training camp last August.

With that said – we are meeting up in Lot E at Gillette in a half hour. Make sure to stop for eggs and beer/ice beforehand since the drive up to Scarborough is long one (2+ hours).

  14. Well if they opened the door they would find Kraft and Roger laughing about this!!! Kraft and Goodell are best buddies. They know they need to make this “look good” It’s all a scam. It’s a ploy to get the media and fans to actually think these 2 are in a war when in reality these 2 will be in the Hamptons together this weekend together talking about new ways Patriots can cheat. Kraft has been lining Rogers pockets for years as well as the refs and CBS…Watching Patriots game is as real as WWE!

  15. ha ha ha ha ha ….poor Roger.

His kingdom doesn’t include the 6 New England states and Patriot fans will not submit and kiss his ring any more than Tom Brady will.

  16. You guys realize Pats fans did nothing to warrant this right? I’m from the next town over and worked at an Inn nearby as a teen – it’s a beautiful, quiet area near a beach where his new house is a huge eyesore. It’s not the kind of place where people will go out of their way to bother him. They may flip him off fishing on the beach but that’s about it. The “stay classy” remarks really don’t make sense since there are no instances where he’s actually been bothered yet.

  17. Um, New England is neither Baltimore nor Missouri.

Boston has never acted up when either winning or losing a world championship in any sport….and there has been plenty of opportunity to do so.

  18. Pats fans aren’t animals lol.

But nobody in New England likes this clown. Just sell the house and leave. And do not come to any games.

  19. Hey Vick took his punishment like a man but not Brady and his clan.

Oh, you must be referring to the convicted felon Vick…yeah, he had no choice. Funny how those correctional officers force you take your punishment.

  20. Please note, this is typical of ALL fans. The same fans that cheered OJ on. The same that gave Ray Rice a standing O. Dallas fans with their domestic abuse player. The list goes on & on.

  21. Roger has nuked the reputation of the entire NFL. There was ONE solution for the good of the game and ALL parties involved and that was for Roger to say HOLD ON…this issue of air pressure is uncharted territory…we are going to put new procedures in place and move on with the greatest game in the U.S….NFL Football. By putting the shield first Roger would’ve sent the message that nothing is larger than the shield. Unfortunately, Roger decided his REPUTATION was more important…..now months later, one of the GREATEST QBs of ALL TIME…has taken the same course. Now the battle will continue in Federal Court as we prepare for the 50th Anniversary Season of the Super Bowl……hopefully Tom will be there to accept the Lombardi from Roger….wouldn’t it be great if NO PATRIOT ACCEPTS IT!!

To you and the rest of the bozos who can’t read: Like the articles states, nothing has occurred. It was a precaution by the NFL to reach out to the police BEFORE the Goodell’s appeal decision was announced. If you have trouble on your own, have someone else read the article to you before commenting.

  23. I don’t even like going to the parking lot at Gillette and I have been a Patriots fan since 1960.

I will say that the NFL didn’t seem to mind lighting a fire under the yahoos that hate Brady and the Patriots by spreading outright lies about him. Did they ever think they could be endangering Brady and his family with their ugly pr campaign?

Just because Brady is wealthy doesn’t mean the NFL isn’t threatening Brady with (1) a loss of 4 game day checks, (2) a loss of endorsement opportunities for him and his wife, (3) and the same physical harm the NFL is asking a Maine town to protect Goodell’s family from potentially being subject. Alas, that’s the outcome of the NFL pouring gas on this case instead of dealing with it in house.

  24. Whatever side of the fence you’re on, we can all agree this charade has gone too far. This story is overshadowing training camp and distracting us from the game we’re so passionate about. Great friggin’ job Roger Goodell.

You have supplied to 31 Team Owners what they wanted = Guilty Verdict for Brady

Now you want to continue to spin the PATRIOTS as a threat to you, the NFL & Amercia.

  28. Just another false accusation Roger is throwing out there to gain more support. I’m sure by tonight the nation new will start their broadcasts with “Patriots fan to burn down Goodell’s modest vacation”.

Or better yet, this whole thing was part of Goodell’s plan to collect the insurance money for the burning of his house.

Better than that… his insurance company dumps his coverage based on this and someone burns it down the next day! That would be awesome…

Of course these are all jokes people, don’t get your under garments all bunched up. This is football in New England, not futbol in England.

  29. The levels this megalomaniac will go to to cast aspersions on the Pats and the entire region is pathetic. What a sorry excuse for a man he is. And his minions are even more pathetic.

Always define yourself and your enemies

Goodell : I’m a law abiding citizen and my opponents are insane. They have pitchforks, torches and…… OMG! They just lit the American Flag on fire . …. Now they’re chanting ” Death to America.

Good products don’t require extensive marketing campaigns.

Has anyone put a per minute price on all the pro Goodell spots that have appeared on the NFL Network or its toady sister station ESPN ? It’s probably more than our next president spends to win the presidency.
    .

  47. It’s important for commenters to know that Patriots fans love all the Super Bowls we win and it has never mattered to us how anyone else views them. The Patriots are the most impressively dominant franchise in NFL history and there is nothing that is said by jealous trolls following any article that changes that fact.

  48. Situations like this should never result in vandalism or physical altercation. We all love the game and our teams, but it’s still a game.

    =====

Obviously, vandalizing a house or terrorizing family, etc., is not acceptable.

That said, I would not be upset if a flaming bag of poo showed up on his doorstep.

  49. But all other fans are welcome to come by for a cup of coffee and a slice of pie?

  50. Shocking. Who would have thought that fans that have been so smart, level-headed, and reasonable through this process would resort to this? Oh wait…

  51. Hey you id I ts. hope you read the Wells Report as well as you did this column. The author specifically said there have been no threats, which actually disappoints me as a Patriots fan. So keep the “stay classy” barbs to yourself.

  52. Wait – Goodell makes $40 million a year

ESPN reports that he’s paid his “independent” investigator $45 million in the last 2 years

He recently paid Ted Wells $5 million for a 200 plus page report that took 100 days to write – and has since rejected it’s findings and Wells’ insistence that Brady need not give up his cell phone

And WE the taxpayers now have to pick up his security tab?

Roger – you made this mess of a bed yourself. Now lie in it and pay for your own security.

  53. The NFL is brilliant at smear campaigns.
From the ridiculous leaked numbers they let fester in the public opinion pool to this.

Look at how many people posting here somehow missed the fact that there had been no incidents, no threats and just jumped in to post how terrible people in Maine are.
The league office knows how to press their buttons and you can read the result here.

They are terrible at running a league but they are masters of using a sleazy smear campaign to distract from their incompetence

  54. You know what would end this nonsense? Larry Flynt offering a million dollars to anyone that can provide dirt on Goodell or the NFL owners. The NFL would cut a deal immediately.

No need to come, we’ll handle that on our own– when our QB can be there to celebrate with us.

  57. Great Idea, When you have pro bowlers with a body count who knows what the fan base is capable of?

    #patriotway

  58. Goodell probably hired police officers to watch over his house in camouflage, it’s his policy to catch culprits with an elaborate sting than to enforce the laws preemptively.

  59. Another pre-emptive strike by Goodell.

I seriously doubt that 99.9% of Patriot fans even knew Roger had a vacation home in Maine.

The .1% that did are most likely not the type that would even consider harming Goodell, his family or his property.

But Roger got another shot in against the Patriots and their fans…

  60. If Brady would of just admitted what they where doing from the start this wouldnt of even been a huge deal.

probably wouldnt even be suspended at all, just pay a fine and move on.

  61. Only Pats fans would march out like Brady was Jesus or something…. Ridiculous

  62. Roger, you might want to stop the manipulation of the press here. I mean you obviously put this story out there. But you really are missing the bigger picture.

I won’t be watching other games this year. I won’t be consuming products that advertise with you. I won’t be buying any “Official X product of the NFL”. You are destroying the integrity of the league. It seems you have decided to destroy Tom Brady and the Patriots. The cost will be your core product. I’m not sure that was a good trade to make.

  63. This is getting ridiculous. What a phony Goodell is. Like we would actually target him like that! So, say, where exactly was the address of that home in Maine again? Just…um…updating my Christmas Card list…

  64. Umm, they didn’t say anything about Pats fans actually threatening him or his property.

This is Goodell the coward taking “preemptive” action in just one more way to make the Pats look bad.

Let’s review. No Pats fan threatened him. No Pats fan approached him. Yet some of you are acting like someone has already been at his house. You people are the ones with no class.

    ———-

Brady’s team is starting to clarify the bold headlines put out there by the NFL. People are starting to get the truth(the cell phone was broken, brady gave records of who he texted and offered to help piece it together)

Goodell being the victim makes him look more sympathetic. Wants Pats fans to look like a crazy, angry mob with no credibility.

  66. If anything, Pats fans won’t assault Goodell but it would be entirely appropriate if someone dumped a truckload of manure on his front porch.

  67. Reports of a rally / posse forming at Gillette Stadium are starting to filter in.

A man around 5’10” dressed in a gray hooded sweatshirt and short pants was seen handing out air pressure gauges and inflation needles to anyone who asked.

  68. Not to mention Eli Manning perpetrated a violation of integrity and parity even greater than the one Brady denies: Eli arranged to go to a team with a championship pedigree rather than the team that actually drafted him.

  69. “Wow… what a coward. He’s going to lie to the public and hide behind the police???”

Did Osi, Tuck or any Giant defenders produce any fumbles or int’s? Did the Giant defense give Eli any short fields in that game? Did Osi, Tuck or any other defender force a TO that gave the game winning scores to the Giants? As you well know & HATE to admit NO.

After Tyree’s miraculous catch, the winning TD wasn’t scored for 5 plays. What happened there to the NFL’s number one defense?

Second time as BB is telling his defense to make him go to Manningham & Paascoe, Eli throws a ball that is one of the greatest passes in SB history. The Pats had a chance to right the wrong from 4 years before & guess what? They CAN’T & Eli does it again!

    Great idea !!!

    I second the motion.

Maybe they can set up shop in one of those abandoned Olympic soccer stadiums down in Brazil.

  76. People need to quit being so violent and emotional and concentrate how we, I mean Brady, can get the suspension stayed to he can play the opening game against the Steelers. I mean. Lord! the man won the Superbowl and he’s the MVP and he deserves to play the opener of the next year. Everyone is going to be watching it. Get the suspension stayed so Brady can receive his due. If he has to be punished after that, that’s up to God and Jesus.

    Love,

Not a Patriots’ fan but someone who thinks Brady deserves to play and should play definitely against the Steelers in the week ONE.

  77. Not a Pats can but I can see a lot of people have trouble comprehending what was written. I don’t blame the NFL for taking precautions. Fan is short for Fanatic There is that super small % in every fan base that goes overboard with their emotions.

  78. Pats fans were spotted filming his house for surveillance. When questioned about the tapes they were destroyed in the same manner the tapes of Rams practices prior to the 2002 Superbowl were. Another bad mark on Coach Blemishek. He created this culture of ‘cheating as much as you can’. Brady bought into it and it’s obviously paid dividends. Sad

  79. I’m not a fan of Brady or the Patriots, in fact not much of a fan of Goodell. (Even though he was not the person who originated the Suspension)
From a neutral observer of this whole Brady situation, and listening to Brady on press coverage over the last 6 months, including the Super Bowl. He looks and sounds like he’s above everyone else, and that includes the NFL.
Patriot fans may disagree, but I think the NFL maybe using this, to set an example for the rest of the league, because I DO disagree with the 4 game suspension. Should’ve been just a fine.

  80. “Brady defenders = Lois Lerner defenders = Hillary defenders.”
    ————-

Let’s not go that far. I think Brady is probably guilty, but it’s not like he was an elected representative who turned his back on and violated the civil rights of the American people.

  81. What? The police doesn’t patrol around your house if you suspect that maybe possibly there might be a problem. If I called the police on those grounds I would be arrested for wasting their time. Being wealthy and white in this country allows Roger the privilege that few of us have.

  82. So just to recap… no Patriots fans have actually threatened him… Goodell and the NFL just continue in their PR spin mode to make GOODELL look like the victim in this mess

And even though he earns $40 million a year – and the NFL, according to ESPN, has paid $45 million to the “independent” investigator Ted Wells over the last 2 years – including a $5 million report that Goodell just rejected yesterday when he made his OWN conclusions without ANY evidence…

WE the taxpayers are having to foot the security bill at his $6 million home?

Roger – you made this mess of a bed – now you lie in it and pay for your own security

  83. I blame the MEDIA, including PFT and ESPN.

When this story started, the media wanted someone’s head on a platter.
Now that they have that head, they have gone apoplectic about protecting that head from harm.

So on one hand the media demands that someone be disciplined.
On the other hand, they demand that the person who orchestrated the alleged deflation, be protected from the very discipline that they themselves demanded.

The media cannot have it both ways. I am sick of them talking out of both sides of their multiple faces.

  84. Wow! Just Wow! Talk about some out-of-control spin to ramp things up to the point of absurdity.

The top Gangster of the NFL playing like he’s scared with a heavily armed hired security team and cameras pointed in every direction plus the worlds-media totally focused on him.

    Tony Montana would be proud.

  85. I’ve been in about half of the NFL cities for games and I live on the Massachusetts state line. Patriots fans, in my experience, are the worst to be around.

Goodell- ” Protecting the league is why I’m doing it, but I am serious Krafty, Tell Bill and Tom to stop that garbage.”
Kraft- “I will and they won’t cheat anymore.”

All criminals go back on their words, they’ll say anything to get out of trouble.

  91. “Stay classy Patriot fans.”

Um…. no one did anything. Goodell and the NFL just asked the police to “keep an eye out”.

  92. I’m a Patriots fan and I don’t think there is anything wrong with the NFL notifying the police. There are whack-job fans in every fan base. It’s not a joking matter.

What is hilarious though is the number of people here cramming every NE fan into one pigeon hole.

Your comments say more about you than they say about us.

  93. There may be a few moronic Pats fans who might do something stupid, but the majority of us are civilized. This whole thng s a joke.

  94. This is stupid and yet another PR move.

    Did anything happen? NO
Did Goodell’s home get vandalized? NO
Were there people outside his home protesting? NO
Are Pats fans going to get painted as vagrants now? YES

Hey Vick took his punishment like a man but not Brady and his clan.

    ——————-
Vick actually did something wrong. Has the NFL even proven that a single football was deflated beyond what should be expected due to weather? Did the NFL write down the original (pre-game) pressures for each ball?

Brady’s lawyers are going to have a field day on court. Brady will own Goodell’s home in Scarborough before this is done.

  97. I know I’m wasting my time, but would all the idiots criticizing the Patriots fans please read the article (assuming that you can read). There have no been no threats, no activities, nothing at all by anyone anywhere regarding Goodell and this whole Deflategate thing. The NFL called the police as a precaution; anybody can call the police and say they have a concern. But NOTHING has happened. So now all the idiots can go back to saying the Patriots cheated, blah, blah, blah….why did I just waste my time doing this?

  98. ALL YOU IDIOTS don’t realize goodell is trying to make you forget that WE ALL hate him and your falling for it.. he knows you hate the patriots and he is tricking all of you… idiots

  99. Oh come on. No one is hurting anyone over a game. That’s crazy. I would litter his yard with pressure gauges though!

  100. “Let’s review. No Pats fan threatened him. No Pats fan approached him. Yet some of you are acting like someone has already been at his house. You people are the ones with no class.”

You want to know why people think this? Because they didn’t ACTUALLY READ THE ARTICLE. They just read the headline and formed an opinion based on it.

These are the same type of people that Goodell has been relying on during his misinformation campaign this whole time. They’re the people who still believe the 2PSI deflation; the type of people who harp on the “deflator” text and don’t bother to read that it was just ONE text sent DURING THE OFFSEASON; the type of people who think that circumstantial evidence itself proves that a crime occurred; the type of people who think that a guy in a bathroom can do to 12 balls in a minute and half, what a team of officials couldn’t do to 24 during halftime; the type of people who believe that “destroying a phone to dispose of evidence” is the same thing as “replacing a broken phone, providing detailed information on the communications that occurred on the device, and offering to assist in obtaining the original texts from (his) provider”…. the same type of people who still believe that the Spygate tapes were “destroyed to hide evidence” and that the Patriots recorded the Rams ’01 SB walkthrough… even though that report was retracted.

In short, these people are essentially the low information voters of the NFL. They read the headline, skip the actual article, and spew their asinine ignorance for all to see.

  101. Now if the owners would have fired him like the whole NFL fan base wanted none of this would have happened!!! Kraft was one of his biggest supporters so you patsie fans can blame your owner!!! But the cheater patsies FINALLY got what they deserved!!!

  102. The NFL offered to reduce Brady’s suspension if he admitted:

    1. Some Patriots employees did something wrong; and

    2. He failed to fully cooperate during the investigation.

Note that this offer would *not* have required any admission of guilt by Brady himself, yet Brady rejected this settlement offer outright. That Brady refused to accept a settlement offer that would have cleared his own name, but assigned some guilt to others, says volumes about how he feels about this case.

This is why this will ultimately be settled in a court of law, and “more probably than not” with an outcome the court of public opinion and Roger Goodell will be unhappy about.

  109. Them Yankees hankerin for fight at the “Goodell Ranch”. Never shouda stole ole man Kraft’s thunder. Goodells in for a heap of trouble when Judge Roy Bean rides into town. However, there IS something wrong with leaking that information to the press in order to portray the Patriots’ fan base as vagrants and hooligans, in an disingenuous attempt to invalidate the arguments they pose against the punishment Goodell issued, by invoking images of raving lunatics that can’t distinguish between sports fanaticism and real life issues.

  111. This is absurd.

At what point do the low information fans realize that they have been had?

I live 20 minutes from Scarborough and until I saw this headline, had no idea that Ubermeister Goodell had a home in Maine, that’s how much he is on the radar here.

If this doesn’t seal Goodell’s reputation as the ultimate tool, nothing will.

  113. Just another pathetic PR stunt by Goodell to cast the Patriots and their fans in a bad light. He’ll stop at nothing in his biased, prejudiced, anti-Patriots agenda to make them look bad. Goodell has disgraced this league with his clear anti-Patriot agenda, giving Brady jail time for what should have been no more than a parking ticket, and he has shown himself to be an incompetent, mean-spirited phony and a con man. Kraft needs to force him out of the league forever for trying to destroy Brady and the Patriots’ reputation and I hope Brady gives em hell in court and does the same thing to Goodell that he’s trying to do to Brady.

    ———————————————————
When Vick took the air out of his dogs they died. When the cold weather took some pressure out of the ball Brady smoked the pathetic Colts. It’s as easy as this. Brady says he nor anyone in the organization did anything wrong. He won’t accept punishment for something he feels strongly he didn’t do. Something I would hope any person with some semblance of self respect would do. I have a question. If the NFL was set to go all out in this investigation why on earth didn’t they take the game balls with them after the game? What kind of fools run an investigation and not secure the absolute vital evidence? It boggles the mind. As dumb or as bad a look as it was for Brady to “destroy” his cellphone doesn’t it give the appearance of a predetermined guilt by the league by not having the common sense to secure the balls? This isn’t finished. As incredible as it sounds it might get even “better” as in worse.

Why ANY Commissioner. in ANY sport, would wage such an obvious smear campaign against one of its greatest franchises and an all-time great player, is a mystery to any rationally minded fan; but it’s clearly happening here.

  172. Hey, Roger Goodell is doing a good enough job of hurting himself; why should we Pats fans help him. We’re just going to sit back and enjoy the show.

Unless, of course, he comes to the SB banner raising ceremony at Gillette stadium – game 1….then we will boo our heads off and turn our backs to him. The fans at home will turn off the tv. No Brady, no banner.

  173. Roger is so dumb he couldn’t figure out that all the Scarborough Police are Pats fans. And now they know where his house is.

Were it the Old Sullivan/Schaefer Stadium, he’d never make it through the dirt parking lots….It’s a kinder and gentler crowd at Gillette these days….Lolzzzz…….

How is that study from Emory University on worst fans looking now? NE was ranked near the top of course.
    ===============================
Emory has probably gone downhill since I graduated from there decades ago. 🙂

In any case, at Emory you get a front row seat to the worst fans in the world right in Atlanta. They think sports consist of pro wrestling, NASCAR, and saying “How bout them Dawgs”.

  176. Well at this point, I’m “generally aware” that someone “more than probably” might try and do something stupid. But if they don’t, does that still make me guilty of something in the eyes of the NFL and Roger Goodell???

  177. Town of Scarborough’s 2015 Municipal budget: $29 million
    Roger Goodell’s 2015 salary: $40 million
Who do you think should pay for security?

  178. I’m happy for anything that stresses goodell out.

So even if this is a PR stunt, at least it gives the liar and cheat something to be concerned about

  179. Hey pat’s fans, your cheating ways are Done !!! Spy gate, deflate gate, the tuck rule. What next. We know you HAVE to back brady what else you gonna do, move ……… hahahahaha
