Russell Wilson agrees to new contract with Seahawks

Sometimes all it takes to get a deal done is setting a deadline. The Seahawks and quarterback Russell Wilson have reached a deal at the last minute.

Wilson confirmed on Twitter that he will be with Seattle for four more years.

[tweet https://twitter.com/DangeRussWilson/status/627115058531733508%5D

According to Peter King of TheMMQB.com, Wilson’s total take over the four years of the deal will be more than $87 million.

We’ll have much more about the structure of the contract. For now, Seahawks fans can celebrate that their man won’t be going anywhere.

  1. I know it is the system (when he gets the contract) but is kind of ridiculous he will be getting a higher average salary than Brady and Rodgers who are clearly better than Wilson. The price of doing business in today’s NFL I guess.

  2. Wow, that is a lot of dough, I honestly never thought that Seattle organization would pony up for that much, because it was ruin that defense, I guess I was wrong.

  3. When its all said and done, Wilson’s work with Seattle will be well worth the $90 million they will have paid him over seven years. There is a lot of back pay involved here.

  4. So basically “new money” will likely edge out Rodgers, just barely or maybe match him, and I’m guessing he’ll get a massive windfall in fully guaranteed money to offset the “average” that is “lower” because of the final year of his current contract. This deal while possibly paying as much or slightly more than Rodgers deal will not hurt the Seahawks nearly as badly since the cap has gone up significantly since Rodgers signed his deal. Sounds like maybe every wins?

  5. Nearly, 22 million per year. Nice. As a Russell Wilson fan, I wish he had taken Cam Newton’s approach and completely defused any sense of drama. His quiet though obvious passive-aggressive actions hurt his once pristine reputation in a way that will stick with many fans for years.

  6. Way too much for a guy that can’t throw a slant pass!! Lord, have mercy on those poor ‘Hawk fans!!

  7. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL…… He needed that big guarantee to be able to spread it amongst the defensive players…. that’s hilarious!

  8. so he got 21.75 a year..how much guaranteed ..isn’t that what was on the table in the first place..

  9. This definitely is a great day for Seahawks fans. He got more guaranteed money and the team didn’t go into crazy cap dollars numbers, so we can still wiggle in Wags contract.

  10. Everyone who plays for Seattle wants to get paid. That team will go back to being mediocre and the bandwagon annoying fans will not care about the team anymore.

  11. The best part about it is that we’re finally free of the seemingly hourly updates here consisting of nothing but pure speculation and increasingly ridiculous scenarios. There was simply no way Wilson and the Seahawks weren’t going to wrap something up by the end of the summer.

  12. Well deserved! Wilson deserves to be compensated well after being one of the brightest young stars in the league at a pittance of a rookie salary.

  13. Reports are $60 mil (over 2/3rds) of the deal is guaranteed. Maybe using a baseball guy wasn’t such a bad idea. He got most of the deal guaranteed, and almost gets as much as Rodgers in new money.

  14. LOL! $22 mil a year is a whole lotta dough for a game manager. So the Sea Chickens now have some of the highest paid QB, TE/WR and RB’s in the league. Better start scoring some more points there boys.

  15. Seahawks’ winning was predicated on having a cheap QB. Now the QB is not only not cheap, but incredibly overpriced. They’re done.

  16. Well, that defense is ruined for sure. Oh what? Everyone’s signed except bobby Wagner. Kam is holding out but that’s it. Sorry haters. The seahawks are fine. On to Santa Clara.

  17. “Russell Wilson agrees to new contract with Seahawks”-Now I can sleep at night. A long time ago as a kid I worried about a certain player resigning with my favorite team. I remember my dad who also loves football saying to me “get my priorities straight” regardless of who this person signs with he’ll make millions of dollars! Meanwhile there are people out there who are worried about where their next meal will come from. So the signing is nice for Russell Wilson, but he better thank God for that defense because he’s a “good” quarterback-but he’s got a long way to go to be a great quarterback………………

  18. I’m guessing there is going to be a little more stress for the salary cap team in Seattle. Bobby Wagner next up.

  19. Niners fans chiming in? Try keeping a team together. Nobody has it better was used by the coach your team fired, clown. Lol @ the quitters that retired.
12 colt guy is a pats fan that even has to cheat a profile name. No Brady, no secondary, no repeat.

Seattle will be competitive for years, keep hating

  20. Good for him. Get that money…Seattle Seahawks were 20-30 before Wilson’s arrival, 42-14 record, and Seattle’s first pro spirts championship since the Sonic in the late 70s. You get a winning QB, you pay him duhhh.

  21. I bet God told him to sign this deal through his Beats headphones. As a Badger myself I can’t stand this former Badger (sort of).

  22. Micheal Bennett’s new negotiation strategy….. “You just paid the 13th best player on the team $22 mil a year….. So where’s my $30 mil per year deal?”

  23. Go Hawks!!! All our studs are paid after Bobby Wagner deal is done! Then salary cap goes up next year , then we sign your teams best free agent!! B O O M !

  24. It’s good for the Seahawks. When the historic defense is gone, they’ll know just how good Wilson is before his next deal

  25. Russell tweeted the info from his phone pats fans. His phone. Because it wasn’t destroyed

The only deadline that matters is the one set forth in the CBA. This deal will get done and Wilson will get paid fairly for his worth.

The franchise value has rocketed from $997m to $1.333b since Wilson’s arrival. Numbers don’t lie. By any measure he has been very good for Seattle. Plus Schneider’s legacy is tied to Wilson. Before the 2011 draft he was known only as the GM, who made Matt Flynn rich.

If Schneider messes this up, he won’t be able to get a job as ballboy in New England. His career is ova.

No the team is predicated on finding talent in lower rounds and developing the players, and unless or until that changes we’ll be alright. Besides everyone that maters except Wagner who we will have enough money to sign is on contract till 2017 so we are not going anywhere for a while.

  28. PEDHawks? Most these guys posting are cut and paste from the last two years, LOL. Some people aren’t smart enough to know how stupid they are….

  29. Good thing it’s only for 4 years. The Hawks will soon find out that when they have a QB who is overpaid and taking up a huge chunk of the salary cap, the team around him won’t be able to carry him to winning seasons. At least they can get out of the deal after a couple years.

  30. You guys think Russell Wilson is overpaid? His contract will look like a complete bargain after that trashbin Andrew Luck gets Fort Knox deliverered to his doorstep by his cocaine snorting owner.

  31. For now, Seahawks fans can celebrate that their man won’t be going anywhere.

    =============================

    Including the Super Bowl.

  32. Good deal for Wilson… Fair deal for the Hawks. Hopefully it’s in a range that doesn’t upset other players.

Call him a game manager all you want, but he is much better than that. The only qb’s I’d take over him are Rodgers, Brady, luck and maybe Big Ben.

  33. Frustrating hearing the usual ‘god’ type stuff when players are negotiating these huge contracts.

I’m sure ‘God’ would prefer he gives most of that 87 million which he’ll never spend in his lifetime to the needy or people starving

Its not the huge money hes getting, its just the usual ‘god wants me to….’ crap you hear.

  34. Can you trolls not be jealous and hateful just one day? Do you really not enjoy watching Wilson scramble and make big plays? We used to worship Flutie for doing the same thing and Russell is so much better than Doug ever was. Come on people, your lives can’t possibly be this miserable.

  35. Plus Schneider’s legacy is tied to Wilson.
    ————
No it’s not. Knowing John personally, I can tell you that he would be swooped up in a hurry to be a GM elsewhere, even when Wilson proves to be a failure and never becoming an elite QB. He has an out clause in his contract to be able to leave Seattle if the Packers GM position becomes available which is his dream job.

  36. Seahawks. Super Bowls. Get used to it. Only one core guy left to sign and the cap goes waaaaaayyyy up again next year.

14-2, crush the Colts in the Super Bowl, on to 2016.

  37. elgranderojo79 says:

    ——————————————————–
Wilson’s stats are way better than Luck’s in every category except yards, which is only because Luck has so many more attempts.

  38. I’m all about players getting paid but this is too much! Where does Russell fall among top-tier NFL quarterbacks?

    1. Rodgers (1 ring, 2 MVP’s)
    2. Brady (4 rings, 2 MVP’s)
    3. Luck
    4. P. Manning (1 ring, 5 MVP’s)
    5. Roethlisberger (2 rings)
    6. Brees (1 ring)
    7. Rivers
    8. Stafford
    9. Romo
    10. Wilson??? (1 ring)

Where is Russell Wilson without Beast Mode and the Legion of Boom?

  39. Please, those of you saying this will ruin the defense. Stop posting, since you obviously aren’t up on contracts. Also, it’s not 22 per, including this year at 1.5 it’s 5/89, or under 19 per

  40. He’s good but not great… not worth over 20 mil a year… 10 sounds more like it. Not hating but he’s not worth 20 mil. Seattle’s D helped alot. Very good player though.

  41. Seahawks in the last decade:

    6 NFC West championships
    3 Super Bowls
    1 World Championship

Now whose team has been irrelevant? How has your team done in the last decade losers?

    LOL

  42. I don’t see this team making the super bowl again with this current team. It’s incredibly difficult to get back there, and they were lucky to make that second appearance, thanks to the Packers choking. Teams around them get better and the league is always changing and figuring out each other.

And stop with saying Wilson is better than Rodgers. You’re an idiot if you truly believe that. He beats an average Packers defense. Rodgers almost beat a very good Seattle defense. Rodgers would put up 50 on his own D.

  43. Congrats to Wilson after years of being grossly underpaid, and to the Seatlle fans for now having the piece of mind knowing your starter is covered for the next several years.

Now to see if Pete can keep a competitive team on the field around him. Bill has done it so it can be done. We’ll see.

Where is Russell Wilson without Beast Mode and the Legion of Boom?
    ———————————————————-
Well let’s see, he has 84 TD passes in his first 3 years, more than Tom Brady did. How many of those 84 TD passes did Beast Mode and the Legion of Boom throw?

  45. This is a great deal and pretty much what the Seahawks leaked earlier this week with just some additional guaranteed money.

Those who criticise Wilson because he “doesn’t throw the ball around” need to remember that he does more with his legs than any QB in the league.

Did you know that Russell Wilson’s 7.2 yards per carry in 2014 lead the league among all players with more than 100 rushing attempts?

Did you know that Russell Wilson’s passing and rushing yards combined of 4,324 yards ranked him 8th overall in the NFL in total yards produced.

Did you know that Russell Wilson’s career passer rating of 98.6 is second only to Aaron Rogers among ALL TIME LEADERS!

Say what you will about the lack of passing yards, but his performance in the clutch is UNMATCHED. No QB in the NFL has lead more game winning drives in the last 3 years than Russell Wilson.

Wilson is the man, and the Seahawks are the TEAM!

  46. $21.9 million a year over 4 years: Agent declares victory.

Then factor in the $1.5 million in 2015: $17.83 million a year over 5 years.

It’s a good solid number, but not insane. Everyone wins. It’s the outcome we’ve been expecting for months.

    3. Luck (NO RINGS)
    4. P. Manning (1 RING like Wilson, ok 5 MVPs)
    5. Big Ben (2 RINGS, 1 more than Wilson)
    6. Brees (1 RING like Wilson)
    7,8,9. (LOL NO RINGS)

Where are these QBs without Big Ben throwing 2 ints (Rodgers), Brady without choke Panther, Eagles, Seahawks, Luck hasn’t done nothing, Manning playing forever 1 RING but 5 MVPs, Big Ben without the Steeler D, Brees without bounty lol, 7,8,9 lol please stop they have NOTHING! You clowns hate but did you see the Dolphins QB get BIG MONEY and hasn’t done a damn thing please stop, cause he was getting paid regardless.

  48. It’s absolutely ludicrous to think Wilson doesn’t deserve his money. Pundits are falling all over themselves to find reason why he should not be paid.

The question is why? The other question involves the “expected” locker room resentment. How crazy is that? Funny you never hear about that stuff from other teams/players. Why does the winningest QB over 3 years in history, create resentment among his teammates? Why doesn’t the media create the same thing for the other QBs? If winning is the goal, why is Wilson not worthy?

Don’t tell me about the defense and Marshawn. Every QB gets credit for wins and he should be no different.

Yeah, because he’s only been there for 2 of his 3 seasons in the league and could’ve been 3/3 if the vaunted defense that so many of you attribute ALL of his success to didn’t blow RW’s incredible comeback @ Atlanta in his rookie season.

You’re from Denver. Still salty; I get it. Fortunately you guys got the 2 rings to offset having even more SB losses than the Vikes & Bills.

This will likely be Peyton’s final year with no legit heir apparent in sight. You probably had dreams of RW being that guy and now those dreams have been Orange Crushed.

    Sorry?

Oh you mean like the two he’s already been to? I’m assuming by your name, “denverdude7”, you’re coming from a place of ultimate confidence in YOUR QB, then. As in the guy whose face was used as a swiffer by Wilsons team two SBs ago? And the guy who single handed my threw the playoffs away last year.

  54. They should have docked him some pay for that pass that cost them the superbowl. He single handedly cost them another ring.

He actually gets less than Rogers. Brady has 19 QBs who make more than him. No one said Rogers and Brady weren’t better? Rogers’ deal was signed in 2013 when the cap was 123M. It’s now 143.28M. That’s a massive jump of 16+%. If Rogers were to sign a deal now it would probably be close to or above 4 years 100M with 70 GTD.

  56. Now just imagine: if the NFL’s best artisan QB (pure passer), Drew Brees, had a supporting cast like Seattle — well, surely, he would have won at least three (3) Super Bowls by now. Money well spent, Mr. Paul Allen.

You just worry about Andrew Luck’s inability to play a well vs the Patriots.

  58. Paying him that much after that terrible NFC Championship game??? Wow I hope the defense starts falling apart wanting more $$$$..

  59. Love it! Great deal for both sides. Good time to be a Seahawk fan – franchise QB and the most talented team in NFL with a GM and coach that keep bringing in new talent.

  60. Congrats to Russell Wilson and the Seahawks fans and organization. People can talk about how he isn’t a good QB but what they have right now is why they have back to back super bowl appearances with one trophy.

Based on what? Rodgers 1st 3 years as a starter are WAY better than Wilson’s. It isn’t even close. I’m sure Mannings are as well.

  63. I’m not going to say he didn’t deserve it. He may not throw it like the other top qbs but they don’t run like him either. A lot of elite qbs throws picks in super bowl.

  64. Congrats Seahawks fans….this is a great signing for your team. Don’t let the haters get to you, in fact you should appreciate their envy.

  65. Told ya!!
I said repeatedly in other posts all the hand wringing was for naught. There was no way Wilson was gonna play another year for a million-five.
He and his agent can do math.

  66. Not even a Seahawk fan but glad that’s over with.
The media and the NFL are dramatizing these contract negotiations worse than day time soap opera’s any more!!
Not to mention all the damn “deflategate” crap!!

Let’s get the 2015 season started already!!!!!!!!!!

  67. Russell Wilson is 0-7 when the opposing team scores 28 or more points:

    2012:
    @ Detroit (28-24 L)
    @ Atlanta (30-28 L) *Divisional Round

    2013:
    @ Indy (34-28 L)

    2014:
    @ SD (30-21 L)
    vs Dallas (30-23 L)
    @ STL (28-26 L)
    Patriots (28-24 L) *Super Bowl

  68. So, where are all the naysayers? Those that were predicting, as usual, no deal would get done? No where to be found. Cowards, the lot of you!

  69. Russell Wilson is the best QB IN NFL HISTORY over their first three years.

Better than Tammy or Erin or Patty or Diane.

Better than Anny or ANYONE ELSE.

    Hurts, huh?

  70. After agent fees and taxes, about how much does Russell go home with annually? Anyone know?

And were he playing in California, could he expect his take home to be about 10-20% less than what is in Washington since they don’t have state tax?

  71. Based on what? Rodgers 1st 3 years as a starter are WAY better than Wilson’s. It isn’t even close. I’m sure Mannings are as well.
    ========
I see, because you want to compare Rodgers years 4-6 to Wilson’s 1-3 because QBs never improve with experience.

As for Manning I understand you’re sure but you’d be wrong.
