Russell Wilson agrees to new contract with Seahawks

Sometimes all it takes to get a deal done is setting a deadline. The Seahawks and quarterback Russell Wilson have reached a deal at the last minute.

Wilson confirmed on Twitter that he will be with Seattle for four more years.

According to Peter King of TheMMQB.com, Wilson’s total take over the four years of the deal will be more than $87 million.

We’ll have much more about the structure of the contract. For now, Seahawks fans can celebrate that their man won’t be going anywhere.

  5. I know it is the system (when he gets the contract) but is kind of ridiculous he will be getting a higher average salary than Brady and Rodgers who are clearly better than Wilson. The price of doing business in today’s NFL I guess.

  8. Wow, that is a lot of dough, I honestly never thought that Seattle organization would pony up for that much, because it was ruin that defense, I guess I was wrong.

  9. When its all said and done, Wilson’s work with Seattle will be well worth the $90 million they will have paid him over seven years. There is a lot of back pay involved here.

So basically “new money” will likely edge out Rodgers, just barely or maybe match him, and I’m guessing he’ll get a massive windfall in fully guaranteed money to offset the “average” that is “lower” because of the final year of his current contract. This deal while possibly paying as much or slightly more than Rodgers deal will not hurt the Seahawks nearly as badly since the cap has gone up significantly since Rodgers signed his deal. Sounds like maybe every wins?

  11. Nearly, 22 million per year. Nice. As a Russell Wilson fan, I wish he had taken Cam Newton’s approach and completely defused any sense of drama. His quiet though obvious passive-aggressive actions hurt his once pristine reputation in a way that will stick with many fans for years.

    The franchise value has rocketed from $997m to $1.333b since Wilson’s arrival. Numbers don’t lie. By any measure he has been very good for Seattle. Plus Schneider’s legacy is tied to Wilson. Before the 2011 draft he was known only as the GM, who made Matt Flynn rich.

    If Schneider messes this up, he won’t be able to get a job as ballboy in New England. His career is ova.

    No the team is predicated on finding talent in lower rounds and developing the players, and unless or until that changes we’ll be alright. Besides everyone that maters except Wagner who we will have enough money to sign is on contract till 2017 so we are not going anywhere for a while.

  65. Good thing it’s only for 4 years. The Hawks will soon find out that when they have a QB who is overpaid and taking up a huge chunk of the salary cap, the team around him won’t be able to carry him to winning seasons. At least they can get out of the deal after a couple years.

  69. Good deal for Wilson… Fair deal for the Hawks. Hopefully it’s in a range that doesn’t upset other players.

    Call him a game manager all you want, but he is much better than that. The only qb’s I’d take over him are Rodgers, Brady, luck and maybe Big Ben.

    No it’s not. Knowing John personally, I can tell you that he would be swooped up in a hurry to be a GM elsewhere, even when Wilson proves to be a failure and never becoming an elite QB. He has an out clause in his contract to be able to leave Seattle if the Packers GM position becomes available which is his dream job.

It’s incredibly difficult to get back there, and they were lucky to make that second appearance, thanks to the Packers choking. Teams around them get better and the league is always changing and figuring out each other.

    And stop with saying Wilson is better than Rodgers. You’re an idiot if you truly believe that. He beats an average Packers defense. Rodgers almost beat a very good Seattle defense. Rodgers would put up 50 on his own D.

    Those who criticise Wilson because he “doesn’t throw the ball around” need to remember that he does more with his legs than any QB in the league.

    Did you know that Russell Wilson’s passing and rushing yards combined of 4,324 yards ranked him 8th overall in the NFL in total yards produced.

    Did you know that Russell Wilson’s career passer rating of 98.6 is second only to Aaron Rogers among ALL TIME LEADERS!

    Say what you will about the lack of passing yards, but his performance in the clutch is UNMATCHED. No QB in the NFL has lead more game winning drives in the last 3 years than Russell Wilson.

    Wilson is the man, and the Seahawks are the TEAM!

    Then factor in the $1.5 million in 2015: $17.83 million a year over 5 years.

    It’s a good solid number, but not insane. Everyone wins. It’s the outcome we’ve been expecting for months.

    Yeah, because he’s only been there for 2 of his 3 seasons in the league and could’ve been 3/3 if the vaunted defense that so many of you attribute ALL of his success to didn’t blow RW’s incredible comeback @ Atlanta in his rookie season.

    He actually gets less than Rogers. Brady has 19 QBs who make more than him. No one said Rogers and Brady weren’t better? Rogers’ deal was signed in 2013 when the cap was 123M. It’s now 143.28M. That’s a massive jump of 16+%. If Rogers were to sign a deal now it would probably be close to or above 4 years 100M with 70 GTD.
