Zimmer says Peterson is looking like a Hall of Famer at training camp

AP

Adrian Peterson is as good as ever after a year away.

That’s the word from Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, who said on today’s PFT Live that his star running back stayed in great shape while he missed 15 games last year for abusing his son. Zimmer says Peterson seems excited for the season and looks like the All-Pro running back he’s been in the past.

“He’s in fantastic shape. His body is rock hard. He’s really into all the football stuff, he’s got a smile on his face, he seems to be extremely happy and excited to be here. Every day you see a couple cuts that look like a Hall of Fame running back, so those are good sights to see,” Zimmer said.

The Vikings have become a trendy pick to be a playoff team, with Peterson returning, Teddy Bridgewater improving in his second season and Zimmer getting another year to build his defense. Zimmer knows that expectations are high, and he’s fine with that.

“I would personally like to be below the radar but that’s obviously not the case,” Zimmer said. “Like I tell our football team, I want us to have high expectations. I want us to have higher expectations than the fans and everyone else.”

The expectations for Peterson are sky high.

  1. Deflategate stories – out. Camp puff pieces are in, and I couldn’t be happier.

  2. The Vikings are looking better and better each week. I like their chances to make the playoffs this year.

  3. Looking like a Hall of Famer..AKA someone out of the league for 5 years. he should be blackballed like Ray Rice

  4. That must make the Lions & Packers feel real secure going into this season. The Vikes, minus AP as well as upwards of 5-6 other key starters from the lineup- somehow managed to lose to the kitties by only 2 points as well as 3 to the Pack, both playing at full strength and playing for positioning in the playoffs where they were playing ballz to the wall to succeed in both games. Adding just AP most likely results in wins for the Vikes in both of those games. The sad part is, that both of those teams lost more talented players than they gained during the offseason, where the Vikes got all their injured back as well as added a supplement of talent over and above any other in division through the draft as well……this is gonna be fun!

  5. according to PA the chicks in yoga pants are looking pretty good this year at training camp too.

can’t wait to drive down 169 tomorrow for training camp and take in the evening practice followed by fireworks and team introduction!

    football is back!

  6. Lazzy in the east who plays with #12 is looking a lot better than AP due to the fact that he’s a better eater at McDonald than AP.

  7. ““He’s in fantastic shape. His body is rock hard. He’s really into all the football stuff, he’s got a smile on his face”

Packer fans have always hated on AP because of these qualities, even before last year. Not to mention he alone causing sever cases of arm-tackling-itish on their entire defense. AP alone has given the Packers the soft monikers they have been called through out the league since he joined the Vikings.

  8. Its training camp…… and Tebow is looking like the second coming of jesus.. who cares till the season starts.. then we will see who is coming to play.

  9. Saying Peterson is looking like an All Pro isn’t exactly the way to remain “under the radar”.

Games aren’t won in training camp. I would say championships, but obviously the Vikings have to make it to the playoffs first.

  10. When its all said and done in reality the Vikes are really competing for the last spot between them and the Bears, all this trendy pick is to go against the grain. Hit me back in Oct on how that trendy pick is working out. Convenient in how the poster above forgot the 42-10 whooping, its all good tho we all know how vikings and jet fans celebrate the of-season.

Nah. He’s never been a factor in wins versus losses. He tries hard, I’ll give him that. He has had two SuperBowl-caliber opportunities against the Packers every year since he joined the league. Of course he’ll try hard. Who doesn’t want to beat the best?

What’s his record against the Packers? Did you see how the Warriors beat LeBron and his Cleveland teammates? They let him do what he does, and the stronger TEAM won.

Same thing here. The Packers own the Vikings.

  12. In this PC world Ole wood Peterson will NEVER be in the HOF. You think its PC now wait 10 years from now. Personally I dont think he should even be playing football.

Yes. The 4-12-1 record since AP was drafted by the Vikings proves your point very well.

Was the Packers 2nd ranked defense in 2010 soft?

I find it humorous that you bring up last year while ignoring the fact that the Vikings were tied in the defensive rankings with one team being one spot ahead in yards allowed and the other being one spot ahead in points allowed.

The Vikings defense is soft. Especially when desperately trying to tackle Eddie Lacy as he trucks them into next week.

  15. Leave it to children of packer fans to crap up this story. I look forward to a determined AP having a HOF like season this year and laughing at packer fans whine about everything.

Last I checked, football is a team sport. Wins and Losses don’t quite equate when you look at AP’s dominant stats against the soft defense of Green Bay. And GB trolls love to bring up that “the Packers own the Vikings”… Why don’t you trolls look up the all-time record they have againts each other… It’s pretty even the last time I checked.

  18. I can’t wait until we play the Packers this year and have a close game (like the game we had last year when Bridgewater played) and then listen to the Packers fans say how they “kicked our butt”. When they only win by a touchdown or field goal…or even better yet they lose…then the excuses will start to fly.

  19. There are going to be bottom jaw marks dragged all over the Wisconsin pavement, after the Vikings beat the Packers this year!
Reality over Arrogance, this years Vikings Motto!
    SKOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. The delusions continue to run rampant. The Vikings are 1-10-1 against the Packers since drafting Peterson. That’s ONE win, TEN losses, and ONE tie. Let that sink in for a minute.

The Packers OWN Peterson just like they OWN the rest of the Vikings.

  21. The Vikings hold the longest win streak in the Vikings/Packers rivalry with 7 wins in a row from 1975-1978.

So again Packers trolls, maybe you could change your wording and say “the Packers have owned the Vikings in recent memory, that would make your comment hold a little more merit.

Ha Ha! That’s what you Vikings fans use as the feather in your cap?

You see…aside from humiliating Vikings fans for sport because they make it so easy…the only thing Packers fans really care about is Championships. It’s called Titletown for a reason!

    13 Championships >0

But congrats on your 1975-1978 We Beat the Packers Trophy!

  28. Wrong again, quiltmaster. Saying the Packers OWN the Vikings holds plenty of merit all on its own. Luckily for us, it takes on even more merit when you try to mealy-mouth around with semantics about what happened 40 years ago.

So please, mealy-mouth some more. It only serves to further drive home the point that the Packers OWN the Vikings.

  29. Oh Yeah… sure the Vikings are going to steam roll the Packers this year, just because the delusional fan base says so!!!!

@ Lambeau 42-0 at the start of the 4th qtr
@TCF 24-11 at the start of the 4th qtr

Recent history tells us a different story though.

Thanks for playing though, without you guys we might need to really play someone in those two inter-conference bye weeks.

  30. In fairness, every Viking looks like a Hall of Famer and every season is destined for 14-2 and a Super Bowl win for the Vikings and their fans in August. Then the sad reality of playing the actual games starts. Maybe the 53rd time is the charm, but otherwise it’s just one more reason for people to shake their heads in pity at the worst fanbase in the most miserable place on the planet.

  32. “AP alone has given the Packers the soft monikers they have been called through out the league since he joined the Vikings.”

None of his highlight runs compared to the two trucking runs Lacey put on your vaulted secondary last year. Seriously… he trucked those guys and kept on running… I have never seen your guy do that to a Packer. His runs are usually when the defense is in pass mode with 5 DB’s and of course since your QB sucks… you run him. He can have 200 yards every game. He is 4-12-1…. and the one tie was embarrassing. We were totally out of the game mentally and you still could not beat a guy we plucked off the street to QB us.

  33. Packer fans and the great Lacy, is that why you kick field goals from 6″ line ???

Funny, all I remember is Clay Matthews ripping the ball out of Peterson’s hands and running the other way for a touchdown.

In all honesty, though, I think the Vikings are improving and wouldn’t be surprised if they grab a wild card spot.

  35. The chants for Free Peterson!!! have finally been heard. Roger’s quest to prevent him from being the GOAT was thwarted, when it finally went to an impartial judge.

The league was anchored by teams like the Packers and the Bears and engineered by guys like Halas and Lambeau so that teams like the Vikings could ride their coattails into the league. Your analysis is flawed, the game at TCF was a classic trap game sandwiched between the Eagles (contenders at the time) and the Patriots. Especially considering the stomp they had already put down at Lambeau earlier in the year. The Vikings may have acquired more “talent” than the Packers this off-season but the talent deficiency on the Vikings was far greater than on the Packers. In golf terms, it is like the Packers roster was a 2 handicap and the Vikings were a 20 handicap. It is much easier for the Vikings to improve by 5 strokes than the Packers. The talent level on the Packers roster is strong this year and you can ask any football expert from around the country and they will put them in the top 2 or 3 teams and a favorite for the Superbowl. Yes, this year should be fun.

  44. In the photo above Zimmer is actually speaking to Peterson, Asiata, and McKinnon….but his ears are so huge they are blocking our ability to see them in the picture.

You see? See how easy it is? Insults, name-calling, and put-downs are easy as pie! That’s the ammunition of choice for most Viking fans, because that’s all they have to fight with. That’s it! Football? Nothing.

The Packers own the Vikings. You know it. They know it. We know it.

  45. Did the Packers win the super bowl last year? Their fans sure make it sound like it. Wake me up when Ted Thompson learns to GM and gets a defense. Until then, the only question is how far will Rodgers take the Packers? To a playoff loss, as usual, as they’re perennial posers thanks to poor management and coaching.

  46. AP whooped a child? Packers have had the better record over the last decade? Vikings fans get a bit giddy for training camp?

Thank God I read this post or I’d never know these things…

  47. Hey, if the Packers are satisfied being good but not good enough, they should keep doing what they’re doing. They’ll never sniff the super bowl again though until they put some talent on defense, learn to draft, and not blow the coaching phase at every opportunity.

  48. I really get upset at the fact that our Vikings have zero Championships. As much as anyone would like to argue, we don’t have any Championships and its not looking like we will ever get one. I mean after 54 years of failure you tend to get a little bitter and upset easily. I definitely think that we are out of our league with the other teams in the division, I mean just look it this competition the Vikings are up against:

Packers have 13 World Class NFL Championships!

Bears have 9 World Class NFL Championships!

Lions have 4 World Class NFL Championships!

Vikings have ZERO World Class NFL Championships!

I can’t even image winning one any time soon with our under achieving, performing team. Catching the Lions is our best shot, but 4 is going to be real tough…

  49. It’s easy for fans to say that Championships didn’t count before their team was in the NFL or there was only 10 teams in the league. Those kinds of people are fans of teams that have no championships, like the Vikings, so what do you expect them to say?

The Lions are crappy and can’t get it together, but the Vikings are clearly the most pathetic team in the NFCN and possibly the entire NFL.

  50. Look on the bright side. If the Vikings win it all this year, follow the same pattern, and the Packers never win another one, the Vikings will tie the Packers in February of 2664.

  51. A local Minneapolis television station came up with this sometime back. It explains a lot, especially why the widest seats in the NFL are being placed in the new stadium.

A study published in Psychological Science found that after a sports team loses, fans of that team eat 16 percent more saturated fats than they usually do. Fans of winning teams apparently are getting thinner, too. The study found the winning fans ate 9 percent less saturated fat.

Fans have such a deep attachment to their NFL teams that losing can trigger a food binge, the study said. The study says fans after a loss not only eat more, they turn to fatty often fried comfort foods and sweets. Terry Christon who is a big Vikings fan said, “I am guilty,” Christon said. “You love them so much you hate to see them lose, so it makes you depressed a little bit. So, you get an extra bowl of ice cream and an extra cold beer. I think it’s true.”

  52. He will be a Hall of Fame’r no doubt, but he will never win a Championship and I don’t think he will really care ,he is all about AP.

You try to talk a good game but you do not know the history very well. It took Halas to keep the packers in GB. The NFL wanted to move the packers out of that tiny village. So much for your anchor theory as far as the fudges are concerned.

  57. The NFL did NOT want to move the Packers out of Green Bay, but would’ve been forced to do so if the referendum for Lambeau Field did not pass……which it did, without a problem. It wasn’t close.

Halas was loaned $1,500.00 by the Packers back in the early 30’s, which literally saved the Bears. He paid back that favor by speaking on the radio to the citizens of Green Bay asking for their support in passing the referendum. He was a factor, certainly, but wasn’t as you describe. He was a friend of the Packers, and vice-versa. To this day there is a shared mutual respect between the clubs and their fans.

The Viking fans would not understand. They’re simply too arrogant.

  58. Let’s just be honest with ourselves…

The past doesn’t matter, but what happens this season will give us all the ammo to smack talk each other this year… not when the Pack won last. Congrats on the 2010 Super Bowl, which was 5 years ago… no one cares.

I could care less about AP’s off the field troubles because looking up to NFL players as role models is a joke. All that matters is what they do on the field. Find real role models… men who get paid millions of dollars to play a game, yes a game, should not be role models. If you don’t agree, you shouldn’t be allowed to have children.

Don’t even start to compare Tubby Eddie Lacy to AP, because they are not now, nor will they ever be, in the same class of running back. AP has set records and is the ONLY back in the NFL that people can legitimately say has the chance to break Dickerson’s record. And AP has had way more memorable runs against elite defenses than Eddie Lacy will ever have.

The Packer’s can be happy winning the division since the last time they won the division and the Super Bowl in the same year was 1996… So go ahead, win the division this year again, no one cares.

A-Rodg is a solid QB, possibly one of the greats, but no one else on your team has the chance of being considered the greatest of all time like AP (again, keep off the field issues out of it). A-Rodg, 1 stat (currently) the best of all time (Passer Rating in 2011). AP has at least 3 that I could find.

I’m looking forward to a 10-6 season from the Vikes, and next year a better season with Teddy and a more seasoned offense.

I’ll get down-voted a ton for this, but oh well, it’s the truth.

I knew their record of futility had to extend well beyond the 1961 season that their “fans” will admit to!

A simple google search will prove this false. Halas went to bat to keep the packers in their tiny village.

You forgot to mention that the whooping was due to a complete, disaster of a performance by one Christian Ponder.

Bridgewater, without Peterson, held the packers in check in the game he played, AS A ROOKIE.

Bridgewater and Peterson, including our top 10 defense, is our team.

    Ponder……please!!!!!!!

I already explained the role Halas played. You’re beating a dead horse. A dead horse that no one but you seems to be interested in.

  70. Could he say that with leaves crammed into his mouth?

Never happened. The leaves in the mouth story was made up.

  71. Zimmer knows a lot what HOF RB’s look like after seeing Giovani Bernard up close with the Bengals!

Yeah because as a defensive coach and coordinator since 1994. In twenty years he has coached and coached against a lot of Hall of Famers.

  72. The delusions continue to run rampant. The Vikings are 1-10-1 against the Packers since drafting Peterson. That’s ONE win, TEN losses, and ONE tie. Let that sink in for a minute.

The Packers OWN Peterson just like they OWN the rest of the Vikings.

One win eh? So the sweep in 2009 just doesn’t count, right?

  73. The comments on PFT are always ridiculous. It’s training camp. Reporters stick a mic in your face and ask you about a guy. You say he’s awesome, he looks great, everything is good. Someone posts it to this website and everyone overreacts. He’s delusional!!! or We’re winning 5 straight Super Bowls. Good lord, people.
