Scot McCloughan: We’re “very comfortable” with Junior Galette

AP

Linebacker Junior Galette didn’t have to wait long to land a new job after being released by the Saints, which came as something of a surprise since his off-field behavior was a big part of his departure from New Orleans and could lead to league discipline that makes Galette unavailable for a portion of the 2015 season.

Redskins General Manager Scot McCloughan said the team was “willing to take that chance” after a two-hour conversation with Galette and said that the team interviewed more than 20 people about Galette before deciding to add him to the roster.

“[He’s] not a bad guy. All players have issues,” McCloughan said, via CSNWashington.com. “We all have some kind of issues. We’ve all made mistakes. I don’t repeat offenders. I don’t want the guy that I know is not going to be a good guy to bring into our locker room. What you always read in the media and hear in the media is not always accurate. We did our investigation. We were thorough, thorough, thorough. [We talked] to the league office, other players and coaches in the league. This guy we feel very comfortable with going forward. Very comfortable.”

McCloughan said he asked Galette about the video that appears to show him hitting a woman and that he’s fine after getting “the real story” from Galette. That conversation helped convince McCloughan that Galette isn’t the kind of bad guy that he promised not to bring into the organization, although Galette’s 22 sacks over the last two seasons probably didn’t hurt too much either.

  1. “All players have issues”.
This from the team that made Haynesworth rich.

  2. Without any definite suspension, I’m a little surprised that he wasn’t picked up sooner. As long as this guy doesn’t have a long suspension waiting for him, and if he can stay out of trouble, then it looks like the REDSKINS got a steal! Those sacks will make most forget about alleged violence against a woman/women.

  3. McCloughan said when he was hired earlier this year that he would “avoid question marks”. This guy is a major question marks, no matter what you believe.

  4. The Redskins probably are paying close to the minimum since Galette came away from New Orleans with boat load of unearned money, but his reputation as a locker room cancer should be enough to make him an untouchable.

  5. This article pretty much sums up why the Redskins will continue to be one of the worst franchises in all of sports.

A video show Galette hitting a woman, yet the GM says he got the “real” story from the perp.

He’s right. All players (and people) have issues. Not all players (and people) are domestic abusers.

The more things change in Washington, the more they stay the same.

  6. This must be an article from The Onion. It doesn’t make sense to read it any way other than parody. Because yeah, the Saints cut a guy with 23 sacks over two years, at a position of need, and who is still owed millions of guaranteed money, and who now has a huge dead cap hit, because everything would be just fine and I’m sure he’s done nothing wrong.

  7. That’s because you’re mean, you aren’t afraid of him hitting you.

I’m all for second chances but this is not a team locker room that could afford these kinds of red flags in there.

  8. Just wait till he airs y’all dirty laundry after he’s let go which will happen eventually

  9. I dont support this signing AT ALL…. but i think this shows that everyone can see that Ray Rice isnt being touched by NFL teams due to his declined play… The assault charge was a major blow to his career… but his 2.9 ypc is the main reason no one has kicked his tires…

  10. Time for the ladies at Ultraviolet to dust off their ‘Goodell Must Go’ flying-banner. I can see this is going to cost me another donation.

  11. Remember those words Scott when turds like Culliver and this guy come back to bite you. Anyway it’s the Redskins, they are not going anywhere this season.

  12. Scot McCloughan: We’re “very comfortable” with Junior Galette.

Translation: We saw just how bad our defense was going to be so we had to take the gamble that this guy wouldn’t end up in hand cuffs again before the end of the season.

  13. Low risk for Redskins…they paid the vet min so…big deal. Cut the guy with no penalty if he acts up if not…the guy had 22 sacks in 2 years. You hate on that your just sound stupid. You can cut on Scots battle with alcoholism but face it…he has built 2 contenders…the reason you hate is you are scared that he will build a third in Washington. A smart hater realizes and respect the good moves the team they are trying to hate on and focus on the idiot moves..believe me the Redskins have done enough of them but Scot is not one. In time the Redskins will be back on top of the division.

  14. Like it was previously stated in so many words, low risk, high reward.
We are going to pay him 700K for the vet minimum (as far as PFT as said) and he knows he’s on a short leash. If he screws up, cut him. You are paying nothing for the talent. Being a Redskins fan, I know our MANY blunders. This one I was on the fence about. He does take playing time from Murphy and Smith (two second round picks the last two years at the same positon) but it also affords them the opportunity to grow into the position and is a cheap means of building depth at the position.
Knowing he’s on a one year “prove it” contract, I would expect he would be on his best behavior.
The NFL is not built with 53 chorus boys on every team, I know that and if you read this far, you do too.
Also, we aren’t the Pats, people aren’t going to come here anymore to win championships or even to get paid, see Albert H. We kind of have to take what we can get through the draft and FA until the time comes where we are competitive and the environment changes.
    HTTR.

  15. This makes perfect sense. Anyone delusional enough to justify the name Redskins in their warped little minds will justify a punk hitting a woman, as long as that punk is on their racist named team.

  16. They interviewed 20 people? Sean Payton said that no one from the Redskins contacted him about Galette.

The one person whose assessment would tell it all and they over looked him.

  17. Why would anyone not a Ravens fan ever try pulling the “in _____ we trust” bs?

I hate the Ravens but in Ozzie we trust is the saying. You can’t just take it and run with it cheering for another team bc its the only way to express faith in your coach, gm, etc.

Much less with a new GM who hasn’t had any of his players hit the field yet.

    But it is Washington

  18. I don’t condone domestic violence, but that video is not domestic violence. It’s a mob of people on a beach coming after one guy. Some of the people in the mob are women, so yes she got hit. What was he supposed to do, just hit the men and let the women beat on him? If it was you and it was 10 v 1 you would be swinging at everyone too.

  19. This cannot be an honest long-term assessment. Either McCloughan has a 1 year or out clause in his contract, or he’s realized his best bet to get of Little Danny’s clutches is to put together a good show his first year and then bail at the best opportunity that presents itself without worrying about what happens next to the Skins.

If that’s what you saw in that video, I can’t help you. You vastly overstate the threat to Gallette. No one was chasing, so you assume he could have simply walked away. An no one else is on him when he is beating that woman.

And yes, if a woman half your size and weight is “beating on you”, you should be able to find a way to stop her that doesn’t involve beating her with a belt.

  21. Just wait….can’t wait too see: Junior running amok in the Nation’s capital.

So glad he’s long gone from any NOLA
association. It’s your circus now, Washington, and your monkey (to coin a phrase).

  22. The hate for the Redskins is OTT, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a multiple time SB champ get more disrespected then them.

  23. As for Junior Galette signing it is no big deal because Scot only signed him to a 1 year deal and he isn’t getting paid alot of money , if Vinny was still here he would have signed him to along term contract.

Well considering Orakpo plays for the Titans now, yeah he’s done in Washington. I used to think you actually followed the NFL.

Apparently Orakpo looked awesome in pads for the Titans

  25. Watched the video several times. He was jumped. Several men were involved beating him with the women. If a man is attacked by other men and women, he fights them off and this woman walks straight up to him and starts again? She gets what she gets… You act like a man? You get handled like one. 3 men and several women at once?? Sorry… I’m coming out…

He wasn’t jumped. If you know how to use google you can find plenty of pics of him on the beach with 5 friends. There are screen shots of him hitting the woman when she is by herself, as well as the guy in the blue shorts. If you look hard enough you will see the pictures with edits pointing out the clothing and shoes in the still photos and the video. It was a drunken beach brawl, plain and simple.

  27. Saints D is hooped without his sack production. Cud see them being bottom in all defensive categories.

  28. All of the whining is trivial because if ANY other NFL team could have signed this guy for league MINIMUM they would have, period, end of discussion. Unlike the Cowboys who signed Greg Hardy to a 1 year $13million deal! Junior is only making 750k, period, and that’s peanuts in the NFL. Hell, I’d sign Tebow to a 1 year 750k deal and he could sit all year!

  29. I forgot to add they signed Hardy for $13 million and he’s out 10 GAMES! Now that is laughable.
