Rex Ryan had concerns about Vick as a bad-weather quarterback

AP

As a four-man quarterback competition continues to percolate in Buffalo, there’s one name that more and more fans are suggesting as a guy who potentially would be better than any of the current candidates.

Mike Vick.

Appearing on Friday’s PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio, Bills coach Rex Ryan said the team considered signing Vick, but decided against it due to concerns regarding Vick’s ability to thrive in inclement weather.

“I had a conversation with Mike,” Ryan said. “Mike’s an outstanding athlete, he’s a tremendous person. I really enjoyed my year with Mike [last season with the Jets], and he’s great for a team. However, our conditions are a little different than most teams in this league. And Mike will tell you, he’s not built really for a bad weather quarterback. He doesn’t have great big hands, and the weather affects him some. And he’d be the first one to tell you.

“You get the wind that we’re gonna have in our stadium and the snow and all that stuff, that’s not in his best interests. And quite honestly, I considered it. We considered it. And I know that’s not the spot for him.”

Without Vick, the competition will continue, perhaps until Week One. And even then, Ryan may keep his cards close to the sweater vest until the Week One game against the Colts begins; he pointed out that there’s no requirement to make any announcements about the identity of the starter before a given game. Which says plenty.

So, for now, all we know for sure is that the starter won’t be Mike Vick.

  1. Maybe he should have consulted with Tom Shady and turn the ball into a nerf ball so he can grip it better in inclement weather.

  2. Vick was awful with the Jets.
If Ryan gave any consideration to signing him, then that’s a cause for concern.

  3. soopreme is right–everyone now knows that the easiest way to go from a nobody to a first-ballot Hall of Famer is to drop the ball down in pressure by a half of PSI.

Future quarterbacks, you’re welcome for this invaluable advice.

  4. Rex is being nice. Vick played for Rex & The Jets in NEW JERSEY. A whopping 125 miles south of the latitude of Buffalo. How much different can the weather be.

I’m not saying he should tell us a more honest reason, but let’s not all buy this line of crap about “I would have signed him, but the weather.”

  5. And now he has concerns about him as a bad weather QB? Granted Winter starts on Columbus Day in Buffalo but the Meadowlands isn’t exactly Miami in November and December

  6. First QB to win playoff game in Lambeau, in January none the less. How many playoff wins those other four “bad weather” QBs have combined

  7. A veteran player at QB who wasn’t prepared to go into a game is “great for a team”? On what planet Rex?

    Good luck Bills fans.

  8. Rex he was your QB in decent weather last year. Obviously you are doomed to repeat the same mistakes you made with the Jets.

  9. How long do you think it will take before MV denies that he would be the first one to tell you that he can’t play in foul weather?

  10. Mike Vick has never been better than any quarterback on any roster that he’s been on. He should have switched to wide receiver ten years ago.

  11. the fastest way to prove membership in the dooshnozzle loser club is to comment about deflated balls,

of course those who do have none anyway.

  12. He did great in bad weather at Virginia Tech also had a good season in Philly. Not buying it Rex. Your team stunk and you got fired.

  13. In November & December the wind comes in off Lake Erie hard ( Edmund Fitzgerald hard). Just ask Dan Marino. When you are going toward the scoreboard end you better be able to throw a tight spiral or your passes will float. Jim Kelly could do it, The only playoff game he lost in the Ralph was against Jacksonville on 60 degree windfree day in January.

  14. This guy is a defensive genius but an offensive moron. Vick, as a stop gap, is still better than any QB on the Bills roster. That Bills defense is so good that they may not need a great bad weather QB. And someone please tell Rex that about 9-11 of his games are going to be played in fair weather.

  15. One win in the snow does not mean he’s “disproved” Rex’s theory. You’d have to review his career in cold weather games, not to mention the practices that Rex watched on a daily basis.

  16. No need to make excuses for Vick. He was a highlight reel QB. He could do some amazing things but couldn’t do the things necessary to be great every game. Struggled to process defenses and was quick to run. His hands have nothing to do with being a smart QB.

  17. In Rex’s 2 best years as HC of the Jets, he played amazing defense, had Thomas Jones pounding the rock, and didn’t put Sanchize in situations to lose the game for him. He’s trying to do that again.

  18. Now I understand how Matt Cassell threw for 400 yds in a snowstorm in New England and looked like an all pro that year but leaves NE and turns into a bum!!

  19. You guys are trolls of the highest manner. Any one consider the fact that Rex realizes that Vick is done, and knowing that Buffalo has terrible weather was his way of dodging the Vick questions without blasting a former player of his?

Jesus…. some people really need to open their brains. just a little.

  20. Vick is done ?
    Please let it be true
So we can start the count down clock on his return to jail
My bet less then 5 years before he is back where he belongs

  21. Tom Brady 180 Wins 56 Losses

Do you realize how hard it is to win in the NFL

    Weakest division in the NFL.

    Lying/cheating QB.

    Lying/cheating OC.

    Not that hard, really.

  22. Bad weather, good weather, it doesn’t matter at all.

They all stink, all 4 of them.

  23. “Weakest division in the NFL.

    Not that hard, really.”

Tom Brady is 9-3 vs. the Ravens he owns them deal with it. Oh and the other AFC East teams don’t have a shot until Brady and Belichick retire don’t bother denying it.

We’re the reigning Super Bowl champions and a dynasty I expect jealousy.

  24. Maybe Rex need to put the parachute down and go look at the stats of when Vick played in philly.

Mike Vick in cold weather philly had them with the top 2 OFFENSES in all of football , Go look at the time Vick was with the Eagles on how their OFFENSE was something to behold , And he did it playing in that weather no different than buffalo.

  25. Bills and Browns have to be the most defunct franchises at finding a legit QB. how many decades have it been since Jim Kelly and Bernie Kosar?

  26. Mike Vick, RG3, Johnny Manziel, or any other running QB is not a bad-weather, good-weather, or any-weather QB. If you had a guarantee from God that none of those guys would ever get hurt, they be great QBs in any weather. But in reality, you better have a great backup QB on your roster if you’re going to begin your season with a running QB as your starter. When Vick was in jail for a couple years, his legs were fresh as daisies. He had a great season. But then it catches up to you. When RG3 started out his rookie season, he had a great year, but then it catches up to you. If you put Manziel on a talented team, he’d lead them into the playoffs, then it would catch up to him.

  27. Lets face it Rex can go bring in Vick and see how things shake out, since no one can tell me what the Bills have currently at QB is anywhere close to the talent of Vick.

Which should tell this has nothing to do with vick can’t play in cold weather, and all to do with the drama that took place last season with the jets ,

It was rex in a power struggle with the GM on who should start, The GM force him to start his pet project Geno Smith, and the fans roasted him in not starting Mike , and we all know how things turn out.

Mike ended up having that memorable game beating the favored steeles, Thats why you put Mike with a good defense and he can WIN you games. He keeps the chains moving with his legs and arm.
    .

  28. Mike Vick has problems with turnovers in perfect weather. It makes complete sense that he’d be a risk putting in there in Buffalo’s December weather conditions.

  29. Ohhh I got a question, who cares ?

Both of them are more hype than substance and in 3 years they’ll both be out of the NFL. But at least Rex has a career in TV to look forward to.

  30. What is pft’s obsession with the idea that mike Vick is anything close to being a startling quarterback? 12 years in the league and maybe 3 of them he was good.

  31. He’s being nice. Doesn’t want to down talk Vick. I hope teams are as oblivious as some fans.. Roman> Hackett and Maroon. Won’t be great but the O is gonna better then people think. No one is going to look forward to playing the Bills this year!

  32. “But at least Rex has a career in TV to look forward to”

Only if he can learn to control that potty mouth of his…..or the NFL develops better bleepers.

  33. The public have concerns that Wrecks Ryan is no NFL coach! Sorry for Bills fans, but now you have really hit the bottom of the barrel with him!

  34. Maybe Rex has learned from his mistakes.
I don’t think any Bills fan will have fun watching Tyrod Taylor play this year though. Baltimore didn’t want him as a backup. Anyone who is looking forward to seeing him play must be incredibly optimistic or delusional.

  35. Rex is being nice. Vick played for Rex & The Jets in NEW JERSEY. A whopping 125 miles south of the latitude of Buffalo. How much different can the weather be.
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Since you asked, they are indeed quite different. In fact, the Buffalo airport is roughly 10 miles from the stadium in Orchard Park. While OP got 7+ feet of snow, the airport got a dusting. That’s the way lake effect works. Furthermore, NYC has a coastal climate moderated by the nearby unfrozen ocean.

  36. @anactualinflowner: I’m sure there is a lot more Rex isn’t saying, but don’t think the weather is similar in Buffalo as it is in Jersey. The lake effect snow and the Canadian blast makes Buffalo crazy cold as early as October. Not the same.

  37. As a four-man quarterback competition continues to percolate in Buffalo, there’s one name that more and more fans are suggesting as a guy who potentially would be better than any of the current candidates.

    Mike Vick.

    In 2001.

  38. I have to laugh at the people who are all up on Vick’s junk. The guy has had one good season in his entire career and you’d think the way people go on about him that he is some amazing player. Factor in him getting older and the fact he is injury prone and it is clear as day he isn’t a viable option.

I bet if he were white that everyone who acts like teams should go sign Vick wouldn’t be saying anything of the sort.

  39. Lots of comments on how Rex is making the same mistakes as he did when he was on the Jets. What they fail to realize is not bringing in Vick is the exact opposite of that, he’s not making the same mistake. Oh yes and please keep reminding us Bills fans that we don’t have a QB as great as Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady. You know two great QBs we beat last year while Kyle Orton was running our offense.

  40. “You get the wind that we’re gonna have in our stadium and the snow and all that stuff, that’s not in his best interests.”

The wind and snow jobs might not be so damaging if they keep Rex from talking.
