Rules limit resources for in-game analytics experts

The Broncos will put their analytics expert in real-time communication with coach Gary Kubiak. But Mitch Tanney will be limited in what he can rely upon when incorporated high-level statistics into the advice he provides to the coach.

The league office has confirmed that, under the current rules, the Broncos won’t be able to use computers or any digital devices other than a Microsoft Surface tablet. And the tablet can be used for still frames of formations only.

So the new-school next-level stats approach will have to be old school, with Tanney relying on spreadsheets and graphs and flip cards and anything and everything but a machine that gathers info at the press of one or more buttons.

In other words, maybe there’s hope for Dunder Mifflin, after all.
