Steelers add former Saints kicker Garrett Hartley

The Steelers have made their decision after working out some veteran kickers this morning.

According to agent Erik Burkhardt, the Steelers have signed former Saints kicker Garrett Hartley.

He was picked after they also worked out Jay Feely and Alex Henery.

Hartley filled in the last two games of last year for the Browns, and other than 2013 (when he hit just 73.3 percent of his field goals), has been a reasonably acceptable professional kicker.

The Steelers needed to replace Shaun Suisham after he tore an ACL.

  1. I could see the Steelers going for 2 nearly every time. That offense plus an unreliable, indoor, kicker at Heinz Field in December kicking 33 yarders for just 1 point — sounds like a pretty good idea.

  2. Saints fans will always thank hartley for that clutch nfc championship kick in 2009 and those three in the superbowl but we hate for the miss in 2010 against atlanta and the failures in the 2013 season. He is streaky. When he hits a couple then there is no way he misses it but once he misses an easy one you have a better chance of going for it on 4th down

  3. First he kicked the Saints past the Vikings into the SuperBowl with a clutch 40 yarder in OT. Then he set a SuperBowl record for three 40+ yrd field goals. Since then, not much……

  4. Currently, half the clubs are carrying two kickers on the roster. Suspect the Steelers will be eyeing the waiver wire until game time against the Pats.

  5. The tebow curse once again- 1 playoff appearance and 0 playoff wins along with only 1 winning season since being tebowed out of the playoffs many years ago.

3 years ago is many years ago? No losing seasons and a division title since. Some curse.

  7. Should have signed former saints kicker morten Anderson. His foot is most likely like favre’s arm. Rest of the body is old but likely still has an anti-aircraft gun for a foot.

    Hahaha

Relax you guys. I’m just making funnies.

  8. There’s talk that guys like Janikowski and Scobee could be cut from their respective teams. Hartley is getting four preseason game checks – – that’s it.

  9. Anything under 35 yds he will shank left or right and barely split the uprights IF he actually even makes it… He’s way better with the longer kicks but still not as good as 2009.

  10. 200 some colleges out there with multiple kickers available and the Steelers decide to risk their best kicker in a worthless scrimmage game. Too cheap to have a young kid come in a kick for the in exhibition games! Couldn’t they find some soccer player to suit up? Morons.

  11. If he hit just 73% in a year while playing at least 9 games indoors, how is he going to kick in a season where he plays all 16 games outdoors and 8 of them at Heinz Field?

Hartley overthinks. He is like an average golfer always trying to shape his shot instead of hitting it straight toward the green like he should. Maybe a little wind and cold will be good for him.

  12. Makes a kick to send a team to the SB then hits 3 40+yarders in that SB but will miss many shorter ones in the regular season. Such is the life of one Garrett Hartley.

  13. Big Ben: “Can you kick 10 FGs per game because my mouth sort of wrote a check my worn out arm can’t cash.”
    LOL.

  14. Must be a slow sports day all the trolls are posting their usual “look at me stuff” and even a Raven tradition of carrying jocks was made…..hey it’s better than deflate gate’s same old blah blah.

Funny how the knee jerkers think this guy will be the Steelers opening day kicker…..just shows you their football knowledge.

Wow — bazinga. Except the Steelers only attempted 32 field goals all last season. They did somehow manage to score over 27 points a game though, which was 7th best in the NFL.

Don’t waste your time. The truth, the facts. And logical reasoning are mutually exclusive to this troll. Don’t confuse him/her with reality his life is fueled in fantasy and the need for attention….just have pity.

He was the Steelers only kicker and they are not going to use their punter for kick offs during a punt competition. It was not the teams fault that Suisham decided to run 40 yards and try to tackle a guy going out of bounds and being tackled anyway.
